On the Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism in d=4

Abstract:Here we provide a short review on the so-called Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism for the construction of higher spin cubic interactions. Initially it was formulated for the massless fields only, but later on it was extended to the arbitrary collections of massive and massless fields.

Abstract:In this work we discuss the cubic interactions for massless spin 3/2 gravitino with massive higher spin supermultiplets using three superblocks (2, 3/2), (5/2, 2) and (3, 5/2) as the first non-trivial examples. We use gauge invariant formalism for the massive higher spin fields and, as is common in such cases, we face an ambiguity related with the possible field redefinitions due to the presence of Stueckelberg fields. From one hand, we show how this ambiguity can be used as one more way to classify possible cubic vertices. We also note that all these field redefinitions do not change the part of the Lagrangian which appears in the unitary gauge (where all Stueckelberg fields are set to zero) so we still have some important independent results. From the other hand, we show how using the so-called unfolded formalism one can fix these ambiguities and obtain consistent deformations for all massive field gauge invariant curvatures which is the most important step in the Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism. Unfortunately, this works for the massive fields only so the way to construct deformations for the massless field curvatures is still has to be found.

Abstract:Till now most of the results on interaction vertices for massless higher spin fields were obtained in a metric-like formalism using completely symmetric (spin-)tensors. In this, the Lagrangians turn out to be very complicated and the main reason is that the higher the spin one want to consider the more derivatives one has to introduce. In this paper we show that such investigations can be greatly simplified if one works in a frame-like formalism. As an illustration we consider massless spin 3 particle and reconstruct a number of vertices describing its interactions with lower spin 2, 1 and 0 ones. In all cases considered we give explicit expressions for the Lagrangians and gauge transformations and check that the algebra of gauge transformations is indeed closed.

Abstract:In this paper, using a frame-like gauge invariant formulation of the massive higher spin bosons and fermions, we develop a direct construction of the completely off-shell cubic vertices describing an interaction of the massless gravitino with the massive higher spin supermultiplets. To achieve the invariance under the local supersymmetry we introduce all necessary supertransformations (both for the physical as well as for the auxiliary fields) and thus all the supercurrents constructed are conserved on-shell. As an illustration of the technique used we present some lower superspin examples and then we consider the arbitrary superspin. We also check that the whole construction is completely consistent with all bosonic and fermionic gauge symmetries of the fields entering the supermultiplets.

Abstract:We develop the BRST approach to construct the general off-shell local Lorentz covariant cubic interaction vertices for irreducible massless and massive higher spin fields on $d$-dimensional Minkowski space. We consider two different cases for interacting higher spin fields: with one massive and two massless; with two massive both with coinciding and with different masses and one massless fields of spins $s_1, s_2, s_3$. Unlike the previous results on cubic vertices we extend our earlier result in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2105.12030" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.12030">arXiv:2105.12030</a>[hep-th]] for massless fields and employ the complete BRST operator, including the trace constraints that is used to formulate an irreducible representation with definite integer spin. We generalize the cubic vertices proposed for reducible higher spin fields in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1205.3131" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1205.3131">arXiv:1205.3131</a> [hep-th]] in the form of multiplicative and non-multiplicative BRST-closed constituents and calculate the new contributions to the vertex, which contain additional terms with a smaller number space-time derivatives of the fields. We prove that without traceless conditions for the cubic vertices in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1205.3131" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1205.3131">arXiv:1205.3131</a> [hep-th]] it is impossible to provide the noncontradictory Lagrangian dynamics and find explicit traceless solution for these vertices. As the examples, we explicitly construct the interacting Lagrangian for the massive of spin $s$ field and massless scalars both with and without auxiliary fields. The interacting models with different combinations of triples higher spin fields: massive of spin $s$ with massless scalar and vector fields and with two vector fields; massless of helicity $\lambda$ with massless scalar and massive vector fields; two massive fields of spins $s, 0$ and massless scalar are also considered.

Abstract:A new nonperturbative approach is used to investigate the Gross-Neveu model of four fermion interaction in the space-time dimensions 2, 3 and 4, the number $N$ of inner degrees of freedom being a fixed integer. The spontaneous symmetry breaking is shown to exist in $D=2,3$ and the running coupling constant is calculated. The four dimensional theory seems to be trivial.

Abstract:Using light-cone gauge formulation, massive arbitrary spin irreducible fields and massless (scalar and one-half spin) fields in three-dimensional flat space are considered. Both the integer spin and half-integer spin fields are studied. For such fields, we provide classification for cubic interactions and obtain explicit expressions for all cubic interaction vertices. We study two forms of the cubic interaction vertices which we refer to as first-derivative form and higher-derivative form. All cubic interaction vertices are built by using the first-derivative form.

Interactions of massless fermionic fields in three dimensions

Abstract:All independent interaction vertices involving massless (Fang--Fronsdal) fermions in three dimensions are classified, completing the classification of interactions of massless fields of any spin. Similarly to the bosonic case, we get no independent vertices at quartic or higher order in the fields involving fields with spin $s\geq 3/2$, and cubic vertices only for spins satisfying triangle inequalities, apart from the cases involving (matter) fields with spin $s\leq 1$. Differently from the bosonic cases, we get only one vertex for each triple of spins with two Majorana fermions and one boson, which is parity even (odd) when the sum of the spins of all fields involved is odd (even). When the two Majorana fermions are identical, their coupling to an odd-spin boson is trivialized. We comment on the non-trivial holographic dictionary relating these vertices to $CFT$ correlators in two dimensions.

Abstract:We develop the BRST-BV approach to construct the general off-shell Lorentz covariant cubic, quartic, $e$-tic interaction vertices for irreducible higher spin fields on $d$-dimensional Minkowski space. We consider two different cases for interacting integer higher spin fields both with massless and with massive fields. The deformation procedure to find minimal (determined with help of generalized Hilbert space) BRST-BV action for interacting higher spin fields is based on the preservation of master equation validity in each power of coupling constant $g$ starting from the Lagrangian formulation for free gauge theory. As examples we consider the construction of local cubic vertices for $k$ irreducible massless fields of integer helicities, and $k-1$ massless with one massive fields of spins $s_1, ,..., s_{k-1}, s_k$. For triple of two massless scalars and tensor field of integer spin the BRST-BV action with cubic interaction is explicitly found. Unlike the previous results on cubic vertices we follow our result for BRST approach [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2105.12030" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.12030">arXiv:2105.12030</a>[hep-th]] for massless fields, but for the unique BRST-BV action instead of classical action with reducible gauge transformations. The procedure is based on the complete BRST operator, including the trace constraints that is used to formulate an irreducible representation with definite integer spin.

Abstract:In a recent paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1107.1872" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1107.1872">arXiv:1107.1872</a> cubic gravitational interactions for a massless mixed symmetry field in AdS space have been constructed. In the current paper we extend these results to the case of massive field. We work in a Fradkin-Vasiliev approach and use frame-like gauge invariant description for massive field which works in (A)dS spaces with arbitrary values of cosmological constant including flat Minkowski space. In this, massless limit in AdS space coincides with the results of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1107.1872" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1107.1872">arXiv:1107.1872</a> while we show that it is impossible to switch on gravitational interaction for massless field in dS space.

Abstract:Massless field equations are fundamental in particle physics. In Clifford analysis, the Euclidean version of these equations has been dealt with, but it is not clear, even in dimension 4, what should be the right analogue of massless field equations for fields with values in a general irreducible Spin(4)‐module. The main aim of the paper is to explain that a good possibility is to take the so‐called generalized Cauchy–Riemann equations proposed a long time ago by Stein and Weiss. For this choice of the equations, we show that their polynomial solutions form different irreducible Spin(4)‐modules. This is an important step in developing the corresponding function theory.
Covariant Lagrangian Cubic Interaction Vertices For Irreducible Higher Spin Fields in Minkowski Backgrounds

Abstract:We review the application of BRST and BRST-BV approaches to construct the generic off-shell local Lorentz covariant cubic interaction vertices for irreducible massless and massive higher integer spin fields (as the candidates for massive particles in the Dark Matter problem) on $d$-dimensional Minkowski spaces. It is shown that equivalence among two Lagrangian dynamics for the same cubically interacting fields with given masses and spins obtained by means of the approach with complete BRST, $Q$, operator and of one with incomplete BRST, $Q_c$, operator in presence of consistent off-shell holonomic (traceless) constraints can be uplifted from the equivalence of the Lagrangians for free higher spin fields. We found that to get non-contradictory Lagrangians for irreducible interacting higher-spin fields within approach with $Q_c$ operator, together with off-shell algebraic constraints in addition to necessary condition of superconmmuting of $Q_c$ with appropriate holonomic constraints on the field and gauge parameter vectors, these constraints should form Abelian superalgebra both with BRST operator above and with operators of cubic vertices.

Abstract:We present a new version of the radial reduction formalism to obtain a cubic interaction of higher spin gauge fields in $AdS_{d+1}$ space from the corresponding cubic interaction in a flat $d+2$ dimensional background. We modify the radial reduction procedure proposed previously by T. Biswas and W. Siegel in 2002 and applied to the free higher spin Lagrangian by K. Hallowell and A. Waldron in 2005. This modified radial reduction scheme is applied to interacting massless higher spin fields in Fronsdal's formulation, and all results are expressed in a direct $AdS_{d+1}$ invariant way with $AdS$ covariant derivatives. We present a consistent algorithm and define new procedure to obtain all corrections proportional to powers of the cosmological constant, and apply these to the main term of the cubic self-interaction.

Abstract:Here we suggest a new local action describing arbitrary integer spin-$s$ massless particles in terms of only two symmetric fields $\varphi $ and $\alpha$ of rank-$s$ and $(s-3)$ respectively. It is an unconstrained version of the Fronsdal theory where the double traceless constraint on the physical field is evaded via a rank-$(s-4)$ Weyl like symmetry. The constrained higher spin diffeomorphism is enlarged to full diffeomorphism via the Stueckelberg field $\alpha$ through an appropriate field redefinition. After a partial gauge fixing where the Weyl symmetry is broken while preserving diffeomorphisms, the field equations reproduce, for arbitrary integer spin-$s$, diffeomorphism invariant equations of motion previously obtained via a truncation of the spectrum of the open bosonic string field theory in the tensionless limit. In the $s=4$ case we show that the functional integration over $\alpha$ leads to a unique non local Weyl and diffeomorphism invariant action given only in terms of the physical field $\varphi$ whose spectrum is confirmed via an analysis of the analytic structure of the spin-4 propagator for which we introduce a complete basis of projection and transition non local differential operators. We also show that the elimination of $\alpha$ after the Weyl gauge fixing leads to a non local diffeomorphism invariant action previously obtained in the literature.

Abstract:This thesis includes several original results. All of them are already published or submitted for publication. I present here the short summary of main results: The ultraviolet singular structure of the bulk-to-bulk propagators for higher spin gauge fields in AdS4 space is analyzed in details. One loop mass renormalization is studied on a simple example. The conformal invariant Lagrangian with the k-th power of Laplacian for the hierarchy of conformally coupled scalars with increasing scaling dimensions connected with the k-th Euler density is rederived using the Fefferman-Graham ambient space approach. The corresponding gauged ambient metric, Fefferman- Graham expansion and extended Penrose-Brown-Henneaux transformations are proposed and analyzed. Linearized gauge invariant interactions of scalar and general higher even spin fields in the AdSD space are obtained. A generalized Weyl transformation is proposed and the corresponding Weyl invariant action for cubic coupling of a scalar to a spin \ell field is constructed. Using Noether's procedure several cubic interactions between different HS gauge fields are derived, including cubic selfinteraction of even spin gauge fields in a flat background. Then the main result - the complete off-shell gauge invariant Lagrangian for the trilinear interactions of Higher Spin Fields with arbitrary spins s1, s2, s3 in a flat background is presented. All possibilities with different numbers of derivatives are discussed. Restrictions on the number of derivatives are obtained. For any possible number of derivatives this interaction is uniquely fixed by gauge invariance up to partial integration and field redefinition. Finally an off-shell generating function for all cubic interactions of Higher Spin gauge fields is presented. It is written in a compact way, and turns out to have a remarkable structure.
Cubic interactions for arbitrary spin N-extended massless supermultiplets in 4d flat space

Abstract:N-extended massless arbitrary integer and half-integer spin supermultiplets in four dimensional flat space are studied in the framework of light-cone gauge formalism. For such multiplets, by using light-cone momentum superspace, we build unconstrained light-cone gauge superfield formulation. The superfield formulation is used to develop a superspace representation for all cubic interactions vertices of the N-extended massless supermultiplets. Our suitable treatment of the light-cone gauge superfields allows us to obtain attractively simple superspace representation for the cubic interaction vertices. Superspace realization of relativistic symmetries of the N-extended Poincare superalgebra on space of interacting fields is also obtained.

Abstract:We present a slightly modified prescription of the radial pullback formalism proposed previously by R. Manvelyan, R. Mkrtchyan and W. Rühl in 2012, where authors investigated possibility to connect the main term of higher spin interaction in flat $d+2$ dimensional space to the main term of interaction in $AdS_{d+1}$ space ignoring all trace and divergent terms but expressed directly through the $AdS$ covariant derivatives and including some curvature corrections. In this paper we succeeded to solve all necessary \emph{recurrence relations} to finalize full radial pullback of the main term of cubic self-interaction for higher spin gauge fields in Fronsdal's formulation from flat to one dimension less $AdS_{d+1}$ space. Nontrivial solutions of recurrence relations lead to the possibility to obtain the full set of $AdS_{d+1}$ dimensional interacting terms with all curvature corrections including trace and divergence terms from any interaction term in $d+2$ dimensional flat space.

Abstract:In this work we presented a number of explicit examples for the cubic vertices describing an interaction of massless spin-5/2 field with massive boson and fermion including all hypertransformations necessary for the vertices to be gauge invariant. Here we restrict ourselves with the massive bosons with spins s=2,1,0 and massive fermions with spins s=3/2,1/2. Our general analysis predicted that the vertex must exist for any boson and fermion with the spin difference 3/2 or 1/2. And indeed it appeared that the vertex exists for all six possible pairs (2,1,0) X (3/2,1/2). As in the case of massive supermultiplets, our construction is based on the gauge invariant description for the massive fields with spins s >= 1. Moreover, we have explicitly checked that all the vertices are invariant also under the gauge symmetries of these massive fields.
