Abstract:Clock generation is an essential part of wireless or wireline communication modules. To facilitate recent advancements in wireline-like communication and in-sensor computing modules at relatively lower data rates, ultra-low power, and accurate clock generation are of the utmost importance. This paper presents a unique implementation of integrating sub-sampling phase locked loop, which alleviates the usage of additional gain elements in the PLL and reduces the noise injection in the system. In this design, the ring oscillator-based PLL can operate a wide frequency range of 100-250MHz while consuming 0.03mm2 of area and 131.8$\mu W$ of power at 250MHz. The area-normalized figure of merit (FOM) of the integrating SSPLL is found to be -236, while showing a reference spur of -43.2dB.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to achieve ultra - low - power and accurate clock generation in low - power communication and computing modules. Specifically, the paper focuses on providing high - precision, low - power clock signals for wireless or wired communication modules and in - sensor computing modules at relatively low data rates.
### Problem Background
1. **Importance of Clock Generation**:
- In wireless or wired communication modules, clock generation is an essential part.
- Recent development trends have made the demand for ultra - low - power and high - precision clock generation especially important at lower data rates.
2. **Limitations of Existing Technologies**:
- High - frequency PLLs (approximately 0.4 - 100 GHz) have made improvements in phase noise (PN), reference spurs, and power consumption, but lack innovation in ultra - low - power and area optimization in the low - to - intermediate - frequency range (50 - 1000 MHz).
- Traditional sub - sampling PLLs (SSPLLs) can reduce jitter, but will cause higher reference spurs due to reference - clock feed - through and charge injection of sampling switches.
### The Solution in the Paper
The paper proposes a unique integrating sub - sampling PLL (ISSPLL), whose main features include:
1. **Elimination of Additional Gain Elements**:
- There is no need for additional charge pumps, transconductance amplifiers, or voltage - current converters, thereby reducing noise injection in the system and decreasing overall power consumption and area consumption.
2. **Optimized Phase - Detection Gain**:
- It provides a higher phase - detection gain (KPD) and further reduces in - band phase noise by appropriately selecting the pulse width (Tpul).
3. **Efficient Oscillator Design**:
- A 32 - stage cross - coupled RC - degenerated ring oscillator is used to minimize area and power consumption. At 250 MHz, the overall power consumption is only 131.8 µW and the FOM is - 236 dB.
### Key Contributions
1. **No Need for Additional Circuit Components**:
- It eliminates the need for charge pumps, transconductance amplifiers, or voltage - current converters, reducing noise injection.
2. **Optimized Phase - Detection Gain Response**:
- It provides a higher phase - detection gain (KPD) and can further optimize performance by adjusting the pulse width (Tpul).
3. **Efficient Oscillator Design**:
- A 32 - stage cross - coupled RC - degenerated ring oscillator is used to achieve low power consumption and a small area.
Through these improvements, this design can achieve ultra - low - power and high - precision clock generation in the low - to - intermediate - frequency range, and is suitable for applications such as ultra - low - power cameras, in - vivo nodes, and communication modules.
