Abstract:We study spherical evolution in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with additional Ricci coupling and use the gauge-invariant approach of Ref.~\cite{Reall:2021voz} to track well-posedness. Our results show that loss of hyperbolicity when it occurs, is due to the behaviour of physical degrees of freedom. They provide further support to the idea that this behaviour can be tamed by additional interactions of scalar. We also point out a limitation of this gauge-invariant approach: the fact that field redefinitions can change the character of the evolution equations.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is the loss of hyperbolicity in Scalar - Gauss - Bonnet Gravity (SGBG). Specifically, the authors focus on how to maintain the hyperbolicity of the system by introducing an additional Ricci coupling in spherical - symmetric evolution, thereby ensuring the well - definedness of the initial - value problem. The following is a detailed analysis of the core issues studied in the paper: ### Research Background and Motivation 1. **Tests of General Relativity** - With the successful detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations and the subsequent discovery of a large number of gravitational wave events, the tests of General Relativity (GR) have reached an unprecedented level. - Third - generation detectors (such as the Einstein Telescope) and space - based detectors (such as LISA) will further explore possible anomalies in extreme dynamic gravity. 2. **Effective Field Theory Perspective** - From the perspective of Effective Field Theory (EFT), a series of operators can be organized to describe our ignorance of the ultraviolet theory, and the coefficients of these operators can be determined experimentally. - The scalar field, as an additional light degree of freedom, can explain the hierarchy problem, the accelerated expansion of the universe, or the nature of dark matter. 3. **Hyperbolicity Problem** - In the gravitational theory of non - minimally coupled scalar fields, especially when the scalar field is coupled to the Gauss - Bonnet invariant, setting a well - defined initial - value problem is a difficult task. - Hyperbolicity is a crucial condition for ensuring the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a system of partial differential equations, that is, the principal symbol of the system must be diagonalizable and have real eigenvalues. ### Research Objectives 1. **Diagnostic Tools for Hyperbolicity** - The authors use the gauge - invariant method proposed in reference [1] to diagnose hyperbolicity, especially in spherical - symmetric evolution. - The hyperbolicity of the system is evaluated by tracking the characteristics of the "effective metric". 2. **Influence of Additional Coupling** - Investigate whether the introduction of an additional Ricci coupling can improve the hyperbolicity of the system, especially in high - curvature regions or near rapidly rotating black holes. - Explore the influence of different coupling constants and initial data on hyperbolicity. ### Main Results 1. **Causes of Hyperbolicity Loss** - The research results show that when hyperbolicity loss occurs, it is caused by the behavior of physical degrees of freedom, rather than improper gauge selection. - This result supports the view that this behavior can be controlled by introducing additional interactions (such as Ricci coupling). 2. **Limitations of the Gauge - Invariant Method** - It is pointed out that one limitation of the gauge - invariant method is that field re - definition can change the characteristics of the evolution equations. - This means that the diagnosis of hyperbolicity needs to consider the influence under different gauges. ### Numerical Simulation and Verification 1. **Numerical Simulation** - Numerical simulations are carried out using different coordinate systems (such as Schwarzschild - like coordinates and Painlevé - Gullstrand coordinates) to verify the characteristic changes of the effective metric. - The results show that when hyperbolicity is lost, the determinant of the effective metric does change sign, which is consistent in different coordinate systems. 2. **Parameter Space Exploration** - Explore the parameter space under different coupling constants (α and β) and initial data to evaluate the loss of hyperbolicity. - The results indicate that the introduction of Ricci coupling can significantly improve the hyperbolicity of the system. ### Conclusion This paper systematically studies the hyperbolicity problem in spherical - symmetric evolution in Scalar - Gauss - Bonnet Gravity through the gauge - invariant method. The research results show that the loss of hyperbolicity is caused by the behavior of physical degrees of freedom, and the introduction of an additional Ricci coupling can effectively control this problem. In addition, the authors also point out the limitations of the gauge - invariant method and emphasize the importance of verification under different gauges.
