Abstract:First-passage processes are pervasive across numerous scientific fields, yet a general framework for understanding their response to external perturbations remains elusive. While the fluctuation-dissipation theorem offers a complete linear response theory for systems in steady-state, it is not applicable to transient first-passage processes. We address this challenge by focusing on rare, rather than weak, perturbations. Surprisingly, we discover that the linear response of the mean first-passage time (MFPT) to such perturbations is universal. It depends solely on the first two moments of the unperturbed first-passage time and the mean completion time following perturbation activation, without requiring any assumptions about the underlying system's dynamics. To demonstrate the utility of our findings, we analyze the MFPT response of drift-diffusion processes in two scenarios: (i) stochastic resetting with information feedback, and (ii) an abrupt transition from a linear to a logarithmic potential. Remarkably, our approach bypasses the need for explicit problem-solving, allowing us to unravel and explain the highly non-trivial response phase space of these systems. Our results simplify the analysis of complex systems, offering a powerful tool for predicting the impact of perturbations on first-passage processes across various scenarios and research fields.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the response of the first - passage time (FPT) to external perturbations of the system. Specifically, the paper aims to establish a general framework to understand the linear response characteristics of the first - passage process when subjected to external perturbations, especially during the transient process. ### Problem Background First - passage processes refer to the time when the system first reaches a specific state. These processes are widely used in fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, and finance. However, the existing linear response theory is mainly applicable to steady - state systems and is not applicable to transient first - passage processes. Therefore, how to understand and predict the response of the first - passage process to external perturbations remains a challenge. ### Core Problem of the Paper The core problem of the paper is: **How to describe and predict the linear response of the first - passage process when subjected to rare but arbitrary perturbations?** ### Main Findings The main findings of the paper include: 1. **Universal Linear Response Formula**: The author found that the linear response of the mean first - passage time (MFPT) to rare perturbations is universal and depends only on the first two moments of the unperturbed first - passage time (i.e., the mean and variance), as well as the average completion time after perturbation activation. This result can be expressed as: \[ \chi = \frac{\langle T \rangle^2}{2} \left( \frac{2\tau}{\langle T \rangle} - CV_T^2 - 1 \right) \] where $\langle T \rangle$ is the mean of the unperturbed first - passage time, $CV_T=\sigma(T)/\langle T \rangle$ is the coefficient of variation of the unperturbed first - passage time, and $\tau$ is the average time from perturbation activation to the occurrence of the first - passage event. 2. **Application Examples**: To verify the above theory, the author analyzed two specific first - passage processes: - **Stochastic Resetting with Information Feedback**: By adjusting the particle position to avoid unnecessary resets, thereby accelerating the first - passage. - **Transition from Linear Potential to Logarithmic Potential**: Study the change in the first - passage time of particles under different potentials. 3. **Beyond Linear Response**: The paper also explored the response of the system at a high perturbation rate ($\lambda \to \infty$) and verified the theoretical prediction through numerical simulation. This reveals that within certain parameter ranges, there is an optimal perturbation frequency that minimizes the first - passage time. ### Summary This paper solves the linear response problem of the first - passage process when subjected to external perturbations, proposes a generally applicable linear response formula, and verifies its effectiveness through specific examples. This result simplifies the analysis of complex systems and provides a powerful tool to predict the impact of perturbations on the first - passage process.
