Abstract:The universal maximal flow problem over time has been widely used in many fields like traffic and transportation problems etc..Previous approaches about such problem are mainly based on ordinary networks or networks with general holding time and capacity at nodes.However,in practical application,there exist some networks with directional weights at nodes,in which the time needed to cross nodes and the capacity limiting the value of flows are related to the going direction of flows.The universal maximal flow problem in such network is studied.The mathematical model is provided,and an improved algorithm is presented,which is done by making some improvement on the classical algorithm.A numerical example is given at last.

Abstract:Improvements are made on the methods drawn from the preflow push maximal flow algorithm and a structural algorithm for maximal flow through a network is introduced which uses the principle of depth- first search in a graph, breaking away from the parallel control of preflow push maximal flow algorithm and aims at the augment of each path to establish the “structural graph ” gradually and obtain the Maximal Flow through the network finally. This method enhances the understandability and control of algorithm and its realization.

Abstract:The maximum flow problem is a classical combinatorial optimization problem. In this paper, a kind of small capacity networks is described, which arises in many applications, and a special algorithm for the maximum flow problem on this kind of networks is proposed. The algorithm is faster than algorithms for general maximum flow problems and it has broken the O(mn)-time barrier of the maximum flow problem, so it is of much importance in theory and constitutes a more efficient algorithm for solving many real application problems. It is a trivial work to test whether a network is a small capacity network, so the algorithm of this paper is also useful for general maximum flow problems.

Abstract:Minimum cost flow problem has been widely used in the area of traffic and transportation. But urban road network is special for intersection movement capacity and delay have different value in different direction, and intersection capacity and delay can not be ignored when finding minimum cost flow in such network. Most minimum cost flow algorithms can not be directly adopted to find minimum cost flow in such network. Urban road network is modeled through a directed network with capacity and delay at intersections represented by directional weight at nodes. An improved successive shortest path algorithm is presented to find minimum cost flow in such network. Its time complexity is O (nmf 0). A numerical example is given.

Abstract:Network coding is an essential way to achieve the maximum flow of multicast networks. Recent results have shown that random graph theory has a heuristic role in guiding the construction of network coding. In this paper, we study the distribution of maximum flow in different random graph models. We show that in a n nodes network with sampling probability p the mean of any s-t maximum flow is about (n-1)p-√((n-1)pq/π). In a n nodes random geometric graph, a model for wireless network, we can get similar results as long as the parameter has corresponding value to the one in random graph model. We also show that the changing of connectivity radius would affect the maximum flow significantly.

Abstract:In this paper, we reveal the relationship between entropy rate and the congestion in complex network and solve it analytically for special cases. Finding maximizing entropy rate will lead to an improvement of traffic efficiency, we propose a method to mitigate congestion by allocating limited traffic capacity to the nodes in network rationally. Different from former strategies, our method only requires local and observable information of network, and is low-cost and widely applicable in practice. In the simulation of the phase transition for various network models, our method performs well in mitigating congestion both locally and globally. By comparison, we also uncover the deficiency of former degree-biased approaches. Owing to the rapid development of transportation networks, our method may be helpful for modern society.

Abstract:Uniform network partition is a type of network partitioning problem that consists of dividing a network into components, such that the components are of about the same size and there are few connections between the components. This paper presents a network partition method using dichotomy based on a criterion called sub network exchange gain. We put forward the network fragmentation degree to evaluate the efficiency of a network. Using dichotomy with the criterion of sub network exchange gain, we proved that a network can be split into two communities totally by cutting the least connecting lines.

Abstract:The support of a flow $x$ in a network is the subdigraph induced by the arcs $uv$ for which $x(uv)>0$. We discuss a number of results on flows in networks where we put certain restrictions on structure of the support of the flow. Many of these problems are NP-hard because they generalize linkage problems for digraphs. For example deciding whether a network ${\cal N}=(D,s,t,c)$ has a maximum flow $x$ such that the maximum out-degree of the support $D_x$ of $x$ is at most 2 is NP-complete as it contains the 2-linkage problem as a very special case. Another problem which is NP-complete for the same reason is that of computing the maximum flow we can send from $s$ to $t$ along $p$ paths (called a maximum {\bf $p$-path-flow}) in ${\cal N}$. Baier et al. (2005) gave a polynomial time algorithm which finds a $p$-path-flow $x$ whose value is at least $\frac{2}{3}$ of the value of a optimum $p$-path-flow when $p\in \{2,3\}$, and at least $\frac{1}{2}$ when $p\geq 4$. When $p=2$, they show that this is best possible unless P=NP. We show for each $p\geq 2$ that the value of a maximum $p$-path-flow cannot be approximated by any ratio larger than $\frac{9}{11}$, unless P=NP. We also consider a variant of the problem where the $p$ paths must be disjoint. For this problem, we give an algorithm which gets within a factor $\frac{1}{H(p)}$ of the optimum solution, where $H(p)$ is the $p$'th harmonic number ($H(p) \sim \ln(p)$). We show that in the case where the network is acyclic, we can find such a maximum $p$-path-flow in polynomial time for every $p$. We determine the complexity of a number of related problems concerning the structure of flows. For the special case of acyclic digraphs, some of the results we obtain are in some sense best possible.

Abstract:The maximum flow algorithm has long been known for calculating the minimum edge cut of any two vertices of a connected graph. The original algorithm, however, does not tell us which edges should be taken exactly and therefore there could be more than one way to construct a minimum-edge-cut set. In this paper, we propose a new method to get a minimum-edge-cut set by selecting edges of a graph in the order of betweenness. By comparing with the augmenting path method, it tends to make the two divided parts of a graph more balanced.
A Decomposition Theorem for Dynamic Flows

Abstract:The famous edge flow decomposition theorem of Gallai (1958) states that any static edge $s$,$d$-flow in a directed graph can be decomposed into a linear combination of incidence vectors of paths and cycles. In this paper, we study the decomposition problem for the setting of dynamic edge $s$,$d$-flows assuming a quite general dynamic flow propagation model. We prove the following decomposition theorem: For any dynamic edge $s$,$d$-flow with finite support, there exists a decomposition into a linear combination of $s$,$d$-walk inflows and circulations, i.e. edge flows that circulate along cycles with zero transit time. We show that a variant of the classical algorithmic approach of iteratively subtracting walk inflows from the current dynamic edge flow converges to a dynamic circulation. The algorithm terminates in finite time, if there is a lower bound on the minimum edge travel times. We further characterize those dynamic edge flows which can be decomposed purely into linear combinations of $s$,$d$-walk inflows. The proofs rely on the new concept of parameterized network loadings which describe how particles of a different walk flow would hypothetically propagate throughout the network under the fixed travel times induced by the given edge flow. We show several technical properties of this type of network loading and as a byproduct we also derive some general results on dynamic flows which could be of interest outside the context of this paper as well.

A robust optimization approach to flow decomposition

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a variant of the so-called minimum flow decomposition (MFD) problem in which uncertainty regarding edge capacities is taken into account from a robustness perspective. In the classical flow decomposition problem, a network flow is decomposed into a set of weighted paths from a fixed source node to a fixed sink node that precisely represents the flow distribution across all edges. While MFDs are often used in bioinformatics applications, they are also applicable in other fields, such as flows of goods or passengers in distribution networks, where the decomposition represents the vehicles and corresponding capacities needed to cover these flows. We generalize this problem to the weighted inexact case with lower and upper bounds on the flow values, provide a detailed analysis, and explore different variants that are solvable in polynomial time. Moreover, we introduce the concept of robust flow decomposition by incorporating uncertain flows and applying different robustness concepts to handle the uncertainty. Finally, we present two different adjustable problem formulations and perform computational experiments illustrating the benefit of adjustability in the uncertain case in a subsequent computational study.

Abstract:In the present paper, we apply the network simplex algorithm for solving the minimum cost flow problem, to the maximum flow problem. Then we prove that the cycling phenomenon which causes the infinite loop in the algorithm, does not occur in the network simplex algorithm associated with the maximum flow problem.

Abstract:We consider a general stable flow problem in a directed and capacitated network, where each vertex has a strict preference list over the incoming and outgoing edges. A flow is stable if no group of vertices forming a path can mutually benefit by rerouting the flow. Motivated by applications in supply chain networks, we generalize the traditional Kirchhoff's law, requiring the outflow is equal to the inflow at every nonterminal node, to a monotone piecewise linear relationship between the inflows and the outflows. We show the existence of a stable flow using Scarf's Lemma, and provide a polynomial time algorithm to find such a stable flow. We further show that finding a minimum cost generalized stable network is NP-hard, while the problem is polynomial time solvable for the traditional stable flow satisfying Kirchhoff's law.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of designing a minimum cost flow network interconnecting n sources and a single sink, each with known locations and flows. The network may contain other unprescribed nodes, known as Steiner points. For concave increasing cost functions, a minimum cost network of this sort has a tree topology, and hence can be called a Minimum Gilbert Arborescence (MGA). We characterise the local topological structure of Steiner points in MGAs for linear cost functions. This problem has applications to the design of drains, gas pipelines and underground mine access.

Maximum flow algorithm based on adjustment of net flow on nodes and its application

Abstract:For calculating the maximum capacity transported from source node to sink node in a network, a maximum flow algorithm was proposed. Based on the concept of net flow on nodes (NFN) and layered increment network (LIN), the plus flow process (PFP) and minus flow process (MFP) on LIN were defined. By performing PFP and MFP on NLP over and over, the maximum flow problem was solved when the sink node can't get a mark again. Compare to the existing max flow algorithm, the proposed method needs no complex data structure in processing, which makes the algorithm implemented easily. Based on the algorithm, a thermal economic dispatch software package which includes fixed electricity plant was developed and had been put into practice and had a good performance. Furthermore, the algorithm runs in O(n2m) (n, m is the number of nodes and arcs of the network) was proved.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of problems called network information flow which is inspired by computer network applications. Consider a point-to-point communication network on which a number of information sources are to be multicast to certain sets of destinations. We assume that the information sources are mutually independent. The problem is to characterize the admissible coding rate region. This model subsumes all previously studied models along the same line. We study the problem with one information source, and we have obtained a simple characterization of the admissible coding rate region. Our result can be regarded as the max-flow min-cut theorem for network information flow. Contrary to one's intuition, our work reveals that it is in general not optimal to regard the information to be multicast as a "fluid" which can simply be routed or replicated. Rather, by employing coding at the nodes, which we refer to as network coding, bandwidth can in general be saved. This finding may have significant impact on future design of switching systems.

Recently they found theoretical applications in the theory of sparsity, topological graph theory, structural graph theory and geometric group theory. We demonstrate applicability of graph decompositions on large networks by implementing an efficient algorithm and testing it on road networks.

Abstract:Network coding has been proven to be an effective way to achieve the maximum flow capacity in a multicast network, which is bounded by the famous maximum-flow minimum-cut theorem. This technique is specially fit for some new types of network, e.g., ad-hoc, sensor network etc. In order to reduce the cost and complexity of network coding, rather than carrying out encoding at all the nodes along the routes of traffic flow, it is better to find out the nodes that need encoding, and perform the coding algorithm at these nodes only, so that the number of encoding nodes are as few as possible. Fragouli et al. (2004) presented a method to get the encoding nodes by subtree decomposition. In this paper, we take a random graph as the model of wireless ad-hoc multicast network, and apply a modified Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to obtain the maximum flow and encoding nodes in an undirected graph. Its correctness can be proven in theory. Furthermore, simulations are done in different conditions to get some meaningful results of this scheme. We also investigate the statistical properties of encoding nodes and maximum flow in ad-hoc multicast networks by random graph theory. We showed that the number of encoding nodes is approximately binomial-distributed, and as the size of the network tends to infinite, it is approximately a Poisson distribution
