Abstract:We show that any complete local (normal) domain admits a module-finite quasi-Gorenstein normal (complete local) domain extension. Notably our result resolves the previously open case of residual characteristic two.

Abstract:We prove that any abelian cover over a smooth variety is defined by some cyclic equations. From the defining equations, we compute explicitly the normalization, branch locus, ramification indices, global invariants, and the resolution of singularities. As an application, we construct a new algebraic surface which is the quotient of ball.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a complete local (Noetherian) ring of characteristic zero. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for $T$ to be the completion of a quasi-excellent local domain. In the case that $T$ contains the rationals, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for $T$ to be the completion of a countable quasi-excellent local domain. We also prove results regarding the possible lengths of maximal saturated chains of prime ideals of these quasi-excellent local domains, and we show that these results lead to interesting examples of noncatenary quasi-excellent local domains.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian local ring, and let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module. Inspired by works of Vasconcelos and Briggs on characterization of complete intersection local rings through the homological properties of the conormal module, in this paper, we define the characteristic module $\mathrm{T}_M$ and the cocharacteristic module $\mathrm{E}_M$ of $M$, and investigate their properties. Our main results include characterizations of Cohen--Macaulay and Gorenstein local rings.

Abstract:We study the étale fundamental group of a singular reduced connected curve defined over an algebraically closed field of an arbitrary prime characteristic. It is shown that when the curve is projective, the étale fundamental group is a free product of the étale fundamental group of its normalization with a free finitely generated profinite group whose rank is well determined. A similar result is established for the tame fundamental groups of seminormal affine curves. In the affine case, we provide an Abhyankar-type complete group theoretic classification on which finite groups occur as the Galois groups for Galois étale connected covers over (singular) affine curves. An analogue of the Inertia Conjecture is also posed for certain singular curves.

Abstract:In a co-evolutionary context, the survive probability of individual elements of a system depends on their relation with their neighbors. The natural selection process depends on the whole population, which is determined by local events between individuals. Particular characteristics assigned to each individual, as larger memory, usually improve the individual fitness, but an agent possess also endogenous characteristics that induce to re-evaluate her fitness landscape and choose the best-suited kind of interaction, inducing a non absolute value of the outcomes of the interaction. In this work, a novel model with agents combining memory and rational choice is introduced, where individual choices in a complex fitness landscape induce changes in the distribution of the number of agents as a function of the time. In particular, the tail of this distribution is fat compared with distributions for agents interacting only with memory.

Abstract:Following our previous work about quasi-projective dimension, in this paper, we introduce quasi-injective dimension as a generalization of injective dimension. We recover several well-known results about injective and Gorenstein-injective dimensions in the context of quasi-injective dimension such as the following. (a) If the quasi-injective dimension of a finitely generated module $M$ over a local ring $R$ is finite, then it is equal to the depth of $R$. (b) If there exists a finitely generated module of finite quasi-injective dimension and maximal Krull dimension, then $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay. (c) If there exists a nonzero finitely generated module with finite projective dimension and finite quasi-injective dimension, then $R$ is Gorenstein. (d) Over a Gorenstein local ring, the quasi-injective dimension of a finitely generated module is finite if and only if its quasi-projective dimension is finite.

Abstract:This paper investigates Galois branched covers of the open $p$-adic disc and their reductions to characteristic $p$. Using the field of norms functor of Fontaine and Wintenberger, we show that the special fiber of a Galois cover is determined by arithmetic and geometric properties of the generic fiber and its characteristic zero specializations. As applications, we derive a criterion for good reduction in the abelian case, and give an arithmetic reformulation of the local Oort Conjecture concerning the liftability of cyclic covers of germs of curves.

Bounds on Gorenstein Dimensions and Exceptional Complete Intersection Maps

Abstract:We prove that if $f:R \rightarrow S$ is a local homomorphism of noetherian local rings of finite flat dimension and $M$ is a non-zero finitely generated $S$-module whose Gorenstein flat dimension over $R$ is bounded by the difference of the embedding dimensions of $R$ and $S$, then $M$ is a totally reflexive $S$-module and $f$ is an exceptional complete intersection map. This is an extension of a result of Brochard, Iyengar, and Khare to Gorenstein flat dimension. We also prove two analogues involving Gorenstein injective dimension.

On generic representations of quasi-split reductive groups over local fields of positive characteristic

Abstract:Let $F$ be a locally compact non-Archimedean field, and $\bf G$ a connected quasi-split reductive group over $F$. We are interested in complex irreducible smooth generic representations $\pi$ of ${\bf G}(F)$. When $F$ has positive characteristic, we prove important properties which previously were only available for $F$ of characteristic 0. The first one is the tempered $L$-function conjecture of Shahidi, stating that when $\pi$ as above is tempered, then the $L$-functions attached to $\pi$ by the Langlands-Shahidi method have no pole for ${\rm Re}(s)>0$. We also establish the standard module conjecture of Casselman and Shahidi, saying that if $\pi$ is written as the Langlands quotient of a standard module, then it is in fact the full standard module. Finally, for a split classical group $\bf G$ we prove a useful result on the unramified unitary spectrum of ${\bf G}(F)$.

Torsion-free Modules over Commutative Domains of Krull Dimension One

Abstract:Let $R$ be a domain of Krull dimension one, we study when the class $\mathcal{F}$ of modules over $R$ that are arbitrary direct sums of finitely generated torsion-free modules is closed under direct summands. If $R$ is local, we show that $\mathcal{F}$ is closed under direct summands if and only if any indecomposable, finitely generated, torsion-free module has local endomorphism ring. If, in addition, $R$ is noetherian this is equivalent to say that the normalization of $R$ is a local ring. If $R$ is an $h$-local domain of Krull dimension $1$ and $\mathcal{F}_R$ is closed under direct summands, then the property is inherited by the localizations of $R$ at maximal ideals. Moreover, any localizations of $R$ at a maximal ideal, except maybe one, satisfies that any finitely generated ideal is $2$-generated. The converse is true when the domain $R$ is, in addition, integrally closed, or noetherian semilocal or noetherian with module-finite normalization. Finally, over a commutative domain of finite character and with no restriction on the Krull dimension, we show that the isomorphism classes of countable generated modules in $\mathcal{F}$ are determined by their genus.

Abstract:The existence of the Gorenstein projective precovers over arbitrary rings is an open question. It is known that if the ring has finite Gorenstein global dimension, then every module has a Gorenstein projective precover. We prove here a "reduction" property - we show that, over any ring, it suffices to consider finitely presented modules: if there exists a nonnegative integer $n$ such that every finitely presented module has Gorenstein projective dimension $\le n$, then the class of Gorenstein projective modules is special precovering.

Abstract:We show that there exists a complete local Noetherian normal domain of prime characteristic whose perfection is a non-coherent GCD domain, answering a question of Patankar in the negative concerning characterizations of $F$-coherent rings. This recovers and extends a result of Glaz using tight closure methods.

Projective smooth representations in natural characteristic

Abstract:We investigate under which circumstances there exists nonzero {\it{projective}} smooth $\field[G]$-modules, where $\field$ is a field of characteristic $p$ and $G$ is a locally pro-$p$ group. We prove the non-existence of (non-trivial) projective objects for so-called {\it{fair}} groups -- a family including $\bf{G}(\frak{F})$ for a connected reductive group $\bf{G}$ defined over a non-archimedean local field $\frak{F}$. This was proved in \cite{SS24} for finite extensions $\frak{F}/\Bbb{Q}_p$. The argument we present in this note has the benefit of being completely elementary and, perhaps more importantly, adaptable to $\frak{F}=\Bbb{F}_q(\!(t)\!)$. Finally, we elucidate the fairness condition via a criterion in the Chabauty space of $G$.

Abstract:We give divisibility results for the (global) characteristic varieties of hypersurface complements expressed in terms of the local characteristic varieties at points along one of the irreducible components of the hypersurface. As an application, we recast old and obtain new finiteness and divisibility results for the classical (infinite cyclic) Alexander modules of complex hypersurface complements. Moreover, for the special case of hyperplane arrangements, we translate our divisibility results for characteristic varieties in terms of the corresponding resonance varieties.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}:=\mathcal{C}(G,\omega,H,\psi)$ be a finite group scheme-theoretical category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\ge 0$ as defined by the first author. For any indecomposable exact module category over $\mathcal{C}$, we classify its simple objects and provide an expression for their projective covers, in terms of double cosets and projective representations of certain closed subgroup schemes of $G$. This upgrades a result of Ostrik for group-theoretical fusion categories in characteristic $0$, and generalizes our previous work for the case $\omega=1$. As a byproduct, we describe the simples and indecomposable projectives of $\mathcal{C}$. Finally, we apply our results to describe the blocks of the center of ${\rm Coh}(G,\omega)$.

Abstract:A cover of normal varieties is exceptional over a finite field if the map on points over infinitely many extensions of the field is one-one. A cover over a number field is exceptional if it is exceptional over infinitely many residue class fields. The first result: The category of exceptional covers of a normal variety, Z, over a finite field, F_q, has fiber products, and therefore a natural Galois group (with permutation representation) limit. This has many applications to considering Poincare series attached to diophantine questions. The paper follows three lines: * The historical role of the Galois Theoretic property of exceptionality, first considered by Davenport and Lewis. * How the tower structure on the category of exceptional covers of a pair (Z,F_q) allows forming subtowers that separate known results from unknown territory. * The use of Serre's OIT, especially the GL_2 case, to consider cryptology periods and functional composition aspects of exceptionality. A Geometric description of almost Gorensteinness for two-dimensional normal singularities

Abstract:Let $A$ be an excellent two-dimensional normal local ring containing an algebraically closed field. Then $A$ is called an elliptic singularity if $p_f(A)=1$, where $p_f$ denotes the fundamental genus. On the other hand, the concept of almost Gorenstein rings was introduced by Barucci and Fröberg for one-dimensional local rings and generalized by Goto, Takahashi and Taniguchi to higher dimension. In this paper, we describe almost Gorenstein rings in geometric language using resolution of singularities and give criterions to be almost Gorenstein. In particular, we show that elliptic singularities are almost Gorenstein. Also, for every integer $g\ge 2$, we provide examples of singularities that is almost Gorenstein (resp. not almost Gorenstein) with $p_f(A)=g$. We also provide several examples of determinantal singularities associated with $2\times 3$ matrices, which include both almost Gorenstein singularities and non-almost Gorenstein singularities.

Essential normality of quotient submodules over strongly pseudoconvex finite manifolds

Abstract:We investigate the $p$-essential normality of Hilbert quotient submodules on a relatively compact smooth strongly pseudoconvex domain in a complex manifold satisfying Property (S). For analytic subvarieties that have compact singularities and transversely intersect the strongly pseudoconvex boundary, we prove that the corresponding Bergman-Sobolev quotient submodules are $p$-essentially normal whenever $p$ exceeds the dimension of the noncompact part of the analytic subvarieties. As a consequence, we partially confirm the geometric Arveson-Douglas Conjecture and resolve an open problem regarding the trace-class antisymmetric sum of truncated Toeplitz operators within a broader context. Moreover, we provide applications in $K$-homology and geometric invariant theory.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.
