Abstract:We construct the first examples of genuine ergodic discrete measured groupoids that are not isomorphic to any equivalence relation or transformation groupoid. We use a construction due to B.H. Neumann of an uncountable family of pairwise non-isomorphic 2-generated groups for our result.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of measurable bounded cohomology for measured groupoids, extending continuous bounded cohomology of locally compact groups. We show that the measurable bounded cohomology of the semidirect groupoid associated to a measure class preserving action of a locally compact group $G$ on a regular space is isomorphic to the continuous bounded cohomology of $G$ with twisted coefficients. We also prove the invariance of measurable bounded cohomology under similarity. As an application, we compare the bounded cohomology of (weakly) orbit equivalent actions and of measure equivalent groups. In this way we recover an isomorphism in bounded cohomology similar to one proved by Monod and Shalom. For amenable groupoids, we show that the measurable bounded cohomology vanishes. This generalizes previous results by Monod, Anantharaman-Delaroche and Renault, and Blank.

Boundaries and equivariant maps for ergodic groupoids

Abstract:We give a notion of boundary pair $(\mathcal{B}_-,\mathcal{B}_+)$ for measured groupoids which generalizes the one introduced by Bader and Furman for locally compact groups. In the case of a semidirect groupoid $\mathcal{G}=\Gamma \ltimes X$ obtained by a probability measure preserving action $\Gamma \curvearrowright X$ of a locally compact group, we show that a boundary pair is exactly $(B_- \times X, B_+ \times X)$, where $(B_-,B_+)$ is a boundary pair for $\Gamma$. For any measured groupoid $(\mathcal{G},\nu)$, we prove that the Poisson boundaries associated to the Markov operators generated by a probability measure equivalent to $\nu$ provide other examples of our definition. Following Bader and Furman, we define algebraic representability for an ergodic groupoid $(\mathcal{G},\nu)$. In this way, given any measurable representation $\rho:\mathcal{G} \rightarrow H$ into the $\kappa$-points of an algebraic $\kappa$-group $\mathbf{H}$, we obtain $\rho$-equivariant maps $\mathcal{B}_\pm \rightarrow H/L_\pm$, where $L_\pm=\mathbf{L}_\pm(\kappa)$ for some $\kappa$-subgroups $\mathbf{L}_\pm<\mathbf{H}$. In the particular case when $\kappa=\mathbb{R}$ and $\rho$ is Zariski dense, we show that $L_\pm$ must be minimal parabolic subgroups.

Abstract:A countable discrete group is called Choquet-Deny if for any non-degenerate probability measure on the group, the corresponding space of bounded harmonic functions is trivial. Building on the previous work of Jaworski, a complete characterization of Choquet-Deny groups was recently achieved by Frisch, Hartman, Tamuz, and Ferdowski. In this article, we extend the study of the Choquet-Deny property to the framework of discrete measured groupoids. Our primary result offers a complete characterization of this property in terms of the isotropy groups and the equivalence relation associated with the given groupoid. Additionally, we use the implications derived from our main theorem to classify the Choquet-Deny property of transformation groupoids.

Abstract:In this note we study countable subgroups of the full group of a measure preserving equivalence relation. We provide various constraints on the group structure, the nature of the action, and on the measure of fixed point sets, that imply that the subgroup topology is not discrete. We mention various conjectures about discrete subgroups of full groups.

Abstract:The theory of measured quantum groupoids, as defined by Lesieur and myself, was made to generalize the theory of quantum groups made by Kustarmans and Vaes, but was only defined in a von Neumann algebra setting; Th. Timmermann constructed locally compact quantum groupoids, which is a C*-version of quantum groupoids. Here, we associate to such a locally compact quantum groupoid a measured quantum groupoid in which it is weakly dense; we then associate to a measured quantum groupoid a locally compact quantum groupoid which is weakly dense in the measured quantum groupoid, but such a locally compact quantum groupoid may be not unique; we construct a duality of locally compact quantum groupoids. We give then examples of locally compact quantum groupoids.

Abstract:We completely elucidate the relationship between two invariants associated with an ergodic probability measure-preserving (pmp) equivalence relation, namely its cost and the minimal number of topological generators of its full group. It follows that for any free pmp ergodic action of the free group on $n$ generators, the minimal number of topological generators for the full group of the action is $n+1$, answering a question of Kechris.

Non-singular and probability measure-preserving actions of infinite permutation groups

Abstract:We prove two theorems in the ergodic theory of infinite permutation groups. First, generalizing a theorem of Nessonov for the infinite symmetric group, we show that every non-singular action of a non-archimedean, Roelcke precompact, Polish group on a measure space $(\Omega, \mu)$ admits an invariant $\sigma$-finite measure equivalent to $\mu$. Second, we prove the following de Finetti type theorem: if $G \curvearrowright M$ is a primitive permutation group with no algebraicity verifying an additional uniformity assumption, which is automatically satisfied if $G$ is Roelcke precompact, then any $G$-invariant, ergodic probability measure on $Z^M$, where $Z$ is a Polish space, is a product measure.

Measurable splittings and the measured group theoretic structure of wreath products

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a countable group that admits an essential measurable splitting (for instance, any group measure equivalent to a free product of nontrivial groups). We show: (1) for any two nontrivial countable groups $A$ and $B$ that are measure equivalent, the wreath product groups $A\wr\Gamma$ and $B\wr\Gamma$ are measure equivalent (in fact, orbit equivalent) -- this is interesting even in the case when the groups $A$ and $B$ are finite; and (2) the groups $A\wr \Gamma$ and $(A\times\mathbf{Z})\wr\Gamma$ are measure equivalent (in fact, orbit equivalent) for every nontrivial countable group $A$. On the other hand, we show that certain wreath product actions are not even stably orbit equivalent if $\Gamma$ is instead assumed to be a sofic icc group that is Bernoulli superrigid, and $A$ and $B$ have different cardinalities.

Abstract:We formulate and prove a very general relative version of the Dobrushin–Lanford–Ruelle theorem which gives conditions on constraints of configuration spaces over a finite alphabet such that for every absolutely summable relative interaction, every translation-invariant relative Gibbs measure is a relative equilibrium measure and vice versa. Neither implication is true without some assumption on the space of configurations. We note that the usual finite type condition can be relaxed to a much more general class of constraints. By ‘relative’ we mean that both the interaction and the set of allowed configurations are determined by a random environment. The result includes many special cases that are well known. We give several applications including (1) Gibbsian properties of measures that maximize pressure among all those that project to a given measure via a topological factor map from one symbolic system to another; (2) Gibbsian properties of equilibrium measures for group shifts defined on arbitrary countable amenable groups; (3) A Gibbsian characterization of equilibrium measures in terms of equilibrium condition on lattice slices rather than on finite sets; (4) A relative extension of a theorem of Meyerovitch, who proved a version of the Lanford–Ruelle theorem which shows that every equilibrium measure on an arbitrary subshift satisfies a Gibbsian property on interchangeable patterns.

Graph products and measure equivalence: classification, rigidity, and quantitative aspects

Abstract:We study graph products of groups from the viewpoint of measured group theory. We first establish a full measure equivalence classification of graph products of countably infinite groups over finite simple graphs with no transvection and no partial conjugation. This finds applications to their classification up to commensurability, and up to isomorphism, and to the study of their automorphism groups. We also derive structural properties of von Neumann algebras associated to probability measure-preserving actions of graph products. Variations of the measure equivalence classification statement are given with fewer assumptions on the defining graphs. We also provide a quantified version of our measure equivalence classification theorem, that keeps track of the integrability of associated cocycles. As an application, we solve an inverse problem in quantitative orbit equivalence for a large family of right-angled Artin groups. We then establish several rigidity theorems. First, in the spirit of work of Monod-Shalom, we achieve rigidity in orbit equivalence for probability measure-preserving actions of graph products, upon imposing extra ergodicity assumptions. Second, we establish a sufficient condition on the defining graph and on the vertex groups ensuring that a graph product G is rigid in measure equivalence among torsion-free groups (in the sense that every torsion-free countable group H which is measure equivalent to G, is in fact isomorphic to G). Using variations over the Higman groups as the vertex groups, we construct the first example of a group which is rigid in measure equivalence, but not in quasi-isometry, among torsion-free groups.

Abstract:For an arbitrary countable discrete infinite group G, non-singular rank-one actions are introduced. It is shown that the class of non-singular rank-one actions coincides with the class of non-singular -actions. Given a decreasing sequence of cofinite subgroups in G with , the projective limit of the homogeneous G-spaces as is a G-space. Endowing this G-space with an ergodic non-singular non-atomic measure, we obtain a dynamical system which is called a non-singular odometer. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for a rank-one non-singular G-action to have a finite factor and a non-singular odometer factor in terms of the underlying -parameters. Similar conditions are also found for a rank-one non-singular G-action to be isomorphic to an odometer. Minimal Radon uniquely ergodic locally compact Cantor models are constructed for the non-singular rank-one extensions of odometers. Several concrete examples are constructed and several facts are proved that illustrate a sharp difference of the non-singular non-commutative case from the classical finite measure preserving one: odometer actions which are not of rank-one and factors of rank-one systems which are not of rank one; however, each probability preserving odometer is a factor of an infinite measure preserving rank-one system, etc.

Abstract:It is known that there are specific examples of ergodic transformations on measure spaces for which the calculation of the outer measure of transformation invariant sets leads to a condition closely resembling Carathéodory's condition for sets to be measurable. It is then natural to ask what functions are capable of `generating', that is leading to, the Carathéodory definition in the same way. The present work answers this question by showing that the property of generating Carathéodory's definition holds for the general class of outer measure preserving ergodic transformations on measure spaces. We further show that the previously found specific examples of functions generating Carathéodory's definition fall into this family of transformations.

Abstract:In this article, we consider actions of \mathcal{Z}_+^d, \mathcal{R}_+^d and finitely generated free groups on a von Neumann algebras $M$ and prove a version of maximal ergodic inequality. Additionally, we establish non-commutative analogues of pointwise ergodic theorems for associated actions in the predual when M is finite.

On dense orbits in the space of subequivalence relations

Abstract:We first explain how to endow the space of subequivalence relations of any non-singular countable equivalence relation with a Polish topology, extending the framework of Kechris' recent monograph on subequivalence relations of probability measure-preserving (p.m.p.) countable equivalence relations. We then restrict to p.m.p. equivalence relations and discuss dense orbits therein for the natural action of the full group and of the automorphism group of the relation. Our main result is a characterization of the subequivalence relations having a dense orbit in the space of subequivalence relations of the ergodic hyperfinite p.m.p. equivalence relation. We also show that in this setup, all full groups orbits are meager. We finally provide a few Borel complexity calculations of natural subsets in spaces of subequivalence relations using a natural metric we call the uniform metric. This answers some questions from an earlier version of Kechris' monograph.

Borel graphable equivalence relations

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of analytic equivalence relations which are Borel graphable, i.e. which can be realized as the connectedness relation of a Borel graph. Our main focus is the question of which analytic equivalence relations are Borel graphable. First, we study an equivalence relation arising from the theory of countable admissible ordinals and show that it is Borel graphable if and only if there is a non-constructible real. As a corollary of the proof, we construct an analytic equivalence relation which is (provably in ZFC) not Borel graphable and an effectively analytic equivalence relation which is Borel graphable but not effectively Borel graphable. Next, we study analytic equivalence relations given by the isomorphism relation for some class of countable structures. We show that all such equivalence relations are Borel graphable, which implies that for every Borel action of $S_\infty$, the associated orbit equivalence relation is Borel graphable. This leads us to study the class of Polish groups whose Borel actions always give rise to Borel graphable orbit equivalence relations; we refer to such groups as graphic groups. We show that besides $S_\infty$, the class of graphic groups includes all connected Polish groups and is closed under countable products. We finish by studying structural properties of the class of Borel graphable analytic equivalence relations and by considering two variations on Borel graphability: a generalization with hypegraphs instead of graphs and an analogue of Borel graphability in the setting of computably enumerable equivalence relations.

Abstract:Let G be a countable residually finite group (for instance, ) and let be a totally disconnected metric compactification of G equipped with the action of G by left multiplication. For every , we construct a Toeplitz G-subshift , which is an almost one-to-one extension of , having r ergodic measures such that for every , the measure-theoretic dynamical system is isomorphic to endowed with the Haar measure. The construction we propose is general (for amenable and non-amenable residually finite groups); however, we point out the differences and obstructions that could appear when the acting group is not amenable.

Abstract:We consider some of the main notions of Gibbs measures on subshifts introduced by different communities, such as dynamical systems, probability, operator algebras, and mathematical physics. For potentials with $d$-summable variation, we prove that several of the definitions considered by these communities are equivalent. In particular, when the subshift is of finite type (SFT), we show that all definitions coincide. In addition, we introduced a groupoid approach to describe some Gibbs measures, allowing us to show the equivalence between Gibbs measures and KMS states (the quantum analogous to the Gibbs measures).

Generic extensions of ergodic actions

Abstract:The article considers generic extensions of measure-preserving actions. We prove that the P-entropy of the generic extensions with finite P-entropy is infinite. This is exploited to obtain the result by Austin, Glasner, Thouvenot, and Weiss that the generic extension of an deterministic action is not isomorphic to it. We show also that generic cocycles are recurrent; as well as typical extensions preserve the singularity of the spectrum, partial rigidity, mildly mixing, and mixing. At the same time, the lifting of some algebraic properties under the generic extension may depend on the statistical properties of the base. The typical measurable families of automorphisms are considered as well. The dynamic behavior of such families is a bit unusual. It is characterized by a combination of the dynamic conformism with the dynamic individualism of the representatives of the generic family.
