Abstract:Every numerical semigroup can be expressed as an intersection of irreducible numerical semigroups. We show that the unions of sets of lengths of factorizations of numerical semigroups into irreducible numerical semigroups are all equal to $\mathbb{N}_{\ge 2}$.

Abstract:Let $S$ be the numerical semigroup generated by three consecutive numbers $a,a+1,a+2$, where $a\in\mathbb{N}$, $a\geq 3$. We describe the elements of $S$ whose factorizations have all the same length, as well as the set of factorizations of each of these elements. We give natural partitions of this subset of $S$ in terms of the length and the denumerant. By using Apéry sets and Betti elements we are able to extend some results, first obtained by elementary means.

Abstract:A numerical semigroup $S$ is an additively-closed set of non-negative integers, and a factorization of an element $n$ of $S$ is an expression of $n$ as a sum of generators of $S$. It is known that for a given numerical semigroup $S$, the number of factorizations of $n$ coincides with a quasipolynomial (that is, a polynomial whose coefficients are periodic functions of $n$). One of the standard methods for computing certain semigroup-theoretic invariants involves assembling a graph or simplicial complex derived from the factorizations of $n$. In this paper, we prove that for two such graphs (which we call the factorization support graph and the trade graph), the number of edges coincides with a quasipolynomial function of $n$, and identify the degree, period, and leading coefficient of each. In the process, we uncover a surprising geometric connection: a combinatorially-assembled cubical complex that is homeomorphic to real projective space.

Abstract:We present two families of numerical semigroups and show that for each family, the number of required components in an irreducible decomposition cannot be bounded by any given integer. This gives a negative answer to a question raised by Delgado, García-Sánchez and Rosales.

Abstract:For a numerical semigroup $S := \langle n_1, \dots, n_k \rangle$ with minimal generators $n_1 < \cdots < n_k$, Barron, O'Neill, and Pelayo showed that $L(s+n_1) = L(s) + 1$ and $\ell(s+n_k) = \ell(s) + 1$ for all sufficiently large $s \in S$, where $L(s)$ and $\ell(s)$ are the longest and shortest factorization lengths of $s \in S$, respectively. For some numerical semigroups, $L(s+n_1) = L(s) + 1$ for all $s \in S$ or $\ell(s+n_k) = \ell(s) + 1$ for all $s \in S$. In a general commutative, cancellative semigroup $S$, it is also possible to have $L(s+m) = L(s) + 1$ for some atom $m$ and all $s \in S$ or to have $\ell(s+m) = \ell(s) + 1$ for some atom $m$ and all $s \in S$. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for these two phenomena. We then generalize the notions of Kunz posets and Kunz polytopes. Each integer point on a Kunz polytope corresponds to a commutative, cancellative semigroup. We determine which integer points on a given Kunz polytope correspond to semigroup in which $L(s+m) = L(s) + 1$ for all $s$ and similarly which integer points yield semigroups for which $\ell(s+m) = \ell(s) + 1$ for all $s$.

Abstract:We study the non-uniqueness of factorizations of non zero-divisors into atoms (irreducibles) in noncommutative rings. To do so, we extend concepts from the commutative theory of non-unique factorizations to a noncommutative setting. Several notions of factorizations as well as distances between them are introduced. In addition, arithmetical invariants characterizing the non-uniqueness of factorizations such as the catenary degree, the $\omega$-invariant, and the tame degree, are extended from commutative to noncommutative settings. We introduce the concept of a cancellative semigroup being permutably factorial, and characterize this property by means of corresponding catenary and tame degrees. Also, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be a weak transfer homomorphism from a cancellative semigroup to its reduced abelianization. Applying the abstract machinery we develop, we determine various catenary degrees for classical maximal orders in central simple algebras over global fields by using a natural transfer homomorphism to a monoid of zero-sum sequences over a ray class group. We also determine catenary degrees and the permutable tame degree for the semigroup of non zero-divisors of the ring of $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices over a commutative domain using a weak transfer homomorphism to a commutative semigroup.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{N} \mathcal{A}$ be the monoid generated by $\mathcal{A} = {\mathbf{a}_1, ..., \mathbf{a}_n} \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d.$ We introduce the homogeneous catenary degree of $\mathbb{N} \mathcal{A}$ as the smallest $N \in \mathbb N$ with the following property: for each $\mathbf{a} \in \mathbb{N} \mathcal{A}$ and any two factorizations $\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{v}$ of $\mathbf{a}$, there exists factorizations $\mathbf{u} = \mathbf{w}_1, ..., \mathbf{w}_t = \mathbf{v} $ of $\mathbf{a}$ such that, for every $k, \mathrm{d}(\mathbf{w}_k, \mathbf{w}_{k+1}) \leq N,$ where $\mathrm{d}$ is the usual distance between factorizations, and the length of $\mathbf{w}_k, |\mathbf{w}_k|,$ is less than or equal to $\max{|\mathbf{u}|, |\mathbf{v}|}.$ We prove that the homogeneous catenary degree of $\mathbb{N} \mathcal{A}$ improves the monotone catenary degree as upper bound for the ordinary catenary degree, and we show that it can be effectively computed. We also prove that for half-factorial monoids, the tame degree and the $\omega$-primality coincide, and that all possible catenary degrees of the elements of an affine semigroup of this kind occur as the catenary degree of one of its Betti elements.

Abstract:Abstract. In this paper we present a procedure to build the set of irreducible numerical semigroups with a fixed Frobenius number. The construction gives us a rooted tree structure for this set. Furthermore, by using the notion of Kunz-coordinates vector we translate the problem of finding such a tree into the problem of manipulating vectors with as many component as the Frobenius number.

Abstract:A semidomain is a subsemiring of an integral domain. Within this class, a unique factorization semidomain (UFS) is characterized by the property that every nonzero, nonunit element can be factored into a product of finitely many prime elements. In this paper, we investigate the localization of semidomains, focusing specifically on UFSs. We demonstrate that the localization of a UFS remains a UFS, leading to the conclusion that a UFS is either a unique factorization domain or is additively reduced. In addition, we provide an example of a subsemiring $\mathfrak{S}$ of $\mathbb{R}$ such that $(\mathfrak{S}, \cdot)$ and $(\mathfrak{S}, +)$ are both half-factorial, shedding light on a conjecture posed by Baeth, Chapman, and Gotti.

A Combinatorial Model of Numerical Semigroup

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $F(A)$ is the largest integer not belonging to the numerical semigroup $\langle A\rangle$ generated by $A$. The genus $g(A)$ is the number of positive integer elements that are not in $\langle A\rangle$. The Frobenius problem is to find $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ for a given sequence $A$. In this paper, we study the Frobenius problem of $A=\left(a,h_1a+b_1d,h_2a+b_2d,...,h_ka+b_kd\right)$ with some restrictions. An innovation is that $d$ can be a negative integer. In particular, when $A=\left(a,ba+d,b^2a+\frac{b^2-1}{b-1}d,...,b^ka+\frac{b^k-1}{b-1}d\right)$, we obtain formulas for $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ when $a\geq k-1-\frac{d-1}{b-1}$. Our formulas simplifies further for some special cases, such as Mersenne, Thabit and repunit numerical semigroups. We obtain explicit closed formulas for generalized Mersenne, Thabit and repunit numerical semigroups and some more general numerical semigroups. Finally, we partially solve an open problem for the Porth numerical semigroup.

Generalized Numerical semigroups up to isomorphism

Abstract:A generalized numerical semigroup is a submonoid $S$ of $\mathbb{N}^d$ with finite complement in it. We characterize isomorphisms between these monoids in terms of permutation of coordinates. Considering the equivalence relation that identifies the monoids obtained by the action of a permutation and establishing a criterion to select a representative from each equivalence class, we define some procedures for generating the set of all generalized numerical semigroups of given genus up to isomorphism. Finally, we present computational data and explore properties related to the number of generalized numerical semigroups of a given genus up to isomorphism.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the notion of m-irreducibility that extends the standard concept of irreducibility of a numerical semigroup when the multiplicity is fixed. We analyze the structure of the set of m-irreducible numerical semigroups, we give some properties of these numerical semigroups and we present algorithms to compute the decomposition of a numerical semigroups with multiplicity m into m-irreducible numerical semigroups.

Abstract:Finite dynamical systems (FDSs) are commonly used to model systems with a finite number of states that evolve deterministically and at discrete time steps. Considered up to isomorphism, those correspond to functional graphs. As such, FDSs have a sum and product operation, which correspond to the direct sum and direct product of their respective graphs; the collection of FDSs endowed with these operations then forms a semiring. The algebraic structure of the product of FDSs is particularly interesting. For instance, an FDS can be factorised if and only if it is composed of two sub-systems running in parallel. In this work, we further the understanding of the factorisation, division, and root finding problems for FDSs. Firstly, an FDS A is cancellative if one can divide by it unambiguously, i.e. AX=AY implies X=Y . We prove that an FDS A is cancellative if and only if it has a fixed point. Secondly, we prove that if an FDS A has a k -th root (i.e. B such that Bk=A ), then it is unique. Thirdly, unlike integers, the monoid of FDS product does not have unique factorisation into irreducibles. We instead exhibit a large class of monoids of FDSs with unique factorisation. To obtain our main results, we introduce the unrolling of an FDS, which can be viewed as a space-time expansion of the system. This allows us to work with (possibly infinite) trees, where the product is easier to handle than its counterpart for FDSs.

Abstract:In this work we will introduce the concept of ratio-covariety, as a nonempty family $\mathscr{R}$ of numerical semigroups verifying certain properties. This concept will allow us to: \begin{enumerate} \item Describe an algorithmic process to compute $\mathscr{R}.$ \item Prove the existence of the smallest element of $\sR$ that contains a set of positive integers. \item Talk about the smallest ratio-covariety that contains a finite set of numerical semigroups. \end{enumerate} In addition, in this paper we will apply the previous results to the study of the ratio-covariety $\mathscr{R}(F,m)=\{S\mid S \mbox{ is a numerical semigroup with Fro-} \mbox {benius number }F \mbox{ and multiplicity }m\}.$

Abstract:We continue our study of exponent semigroups of rational matrices. Our main result is that the matricial dimension of a numerical semigroup is at most its multiplicity (the least generator), greatly improving upon the previous upper bound (the conductor). For many numerical semigroups, including all symmetric numerical semigroups, our upper bound is tight.

Abstract:We present several new algorithms for computing factorization invariant values over affine semigroups. In particular, we give (i) the first known algorithm to compute the delta set of any affine semigroup, (ii) an improved method of computing the tame degree of an affine semigroup, and (iii) a dynamic algorithm to compute catenary degrees of affine semigroup elements. Our algorithms rely on theoretical results from combinatorial commutative algebra involving Gr\"obner bases, Hilbert bases, and other standard techniques. Implementation in the computer algebra system GAP is discussed.

Abstract:A factorization of an element $x$ in a monoid $(M, \cdot)$ is an expression of the form $x = u_1^{z_1} \cdots u_k^{z_k}$ for irreducible elements $u_1, \ldots, u_k \in M$, and the length of such a factorization is $z_1 + \cdots + z_k$. We introduce the notion of $p$-length, a generalized notion of factorization length obtained from the $\ell_p$-norm of the sequence $(z_1, \ldots, z_k)$, and present asymptotic results on extremal $p$-lengths of factorizations for large elements of numerical semigroups (additive submonoids of $\mathbb Z_{\ge 0}$) and arithmetical congruence monoids (certain multiplicative submonoids of $\mathbb Z_{\ge 1}$). Our results, inspired by analogous results for classical factorization length, demonstrate the types of combinatorial statements one may hope to obtain for sufficiently nice monoids, as well as the subtlety such asymptotic questions can have for general monoids.

Abstract:Let $\langle A\rangle$ be the numerical semigroup generated by relatively prime positive integers $\{a_1,a_2,...,a_n\}$. The quotient of $\langle A\rangle$ with respect to a positive integer $p$ is defined by $\frac{\langle A\rangle}{p}=\{x\in \mathbb{N} \mid px\in \langle A\rangle\}$. The quotient $\frac{\langle A\rangle}{p}$ is known to be a semigroup but is hard to study. When $p$ is a positive divisor of $a_1$, we reduce the computation of the Apéry set of $\frac{a_1}{p}$ in $\frac{\langle A\rangle}{p}$ to a simple minimization problem. This allow us to obtain closed formulas of the Frobenius number of the quotient for some special numerical semigroups. These includes the cases when $\langle A\rangle$ is the almost arithmetic progressions, the almost arithmetic progressions with initial gaps, etc. In particular, we partially solve an open problem proposed by A. Adeniran et al.

Semi-covariety of numerical semigroups

Abstract:The main aim of this work is to introduce and justify the study of semi-covarities. A {\it semi-covariety} is a non-empty family $\mathcal{F}$ of numerical semigroups such that it is closed under finite intersections, has a minimum, $\min(\mathcal{F}),$ and if $S\in \mathcal{F}$ being $S\neq \min(\mathcal{F})$, then there is $x\in S$ such that $S\backslash \{x\}\in \mathcal{F}$. As examples, we will study the semi-covariety formed by all the numerical semigroups containing a fixed numerical semigroup, and the semi-covariety composed by all the numerical semigroups of coated odd elements and fixed Frobenius number.
