Abstract:Rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two prospective technologies for improving the spectral and energy efficiency in future wireless communication systems. In this work, we investigate a rate splitting (RS) technique for an RIS-aided system in the presence of only statistical channel knowledge. We propose an algorithm with a quasi closed-form solution based only on the second-order channel statistics, which reduces the design complexity of the system as it does not require estimation of the channel state information (CSI) and optimisation of the precoding filters and phase shifts of the RIS in every channel coherence interval.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to design a low - complexity transmission scheme in the wireless communication system assisted by rate - splitting multiple access (RSMA) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based only on channel statistical knowledge, so as to improve the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of the system. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to design a transmission algorithm by using the second - order statistical characteristics of the channel in the absence of accurate channel state information (CSI). Traditional algorithms usually assume that accurate CSI can be obtained and need to optimize the beamforming vector and the phase shift of RIS within each channel coherence period, which leads to high computational complexity. However, the algorithm proposed in this paper only depends on the statistical characteristics of the channel, that is, the covariance matrix of the channel. These statistical characteristics can remain stable for a long time, thereby reducing the need for channel estimation and the design complexity of the system. The main contribution of the paper lies in proposing a quasi - closed - form solution algorithm based on channel statistical characteristics, which can maximize the total achievable rate of users without relying on the actual CSI. In addition, the paper also provides an alternative method considering imperfect CSI as a benchmark for comparing the performance with the algorithm based only on statistical CSI. In this way, the paper not only solves the problem that it is difficult to obtain accurate CSI in practical applications, but also provides a more practical solution with lower computational cost.
