Abstract:This paper describes a parsing/generation system for finite verbal forms in Akkadian, with the possible addition of suffixes, implemented in Prolog. The work described provides the framework and engine to interpret the D, N, and G stems along with accusative, dative and ventive endings.

Abstract:We describe a parser of English effectuated by biologically plausible neurons and synapses, and implemented through the Assembly Calculus, a recently proposed computational framework for cognitive function. We demonstrate that this device is capable of correctly parsing reasonably nontrivial sentences. While our experiments entail rather simple sentences in English, our results suggest that the parser can be extended beyond what we have implemented, to several directions encompassing much of language. For example, we present a simple Russian version of the parser, and discuss how to handle recursion, embedding, and polysemy.

Abstract:This work describes a system that performs morphological analysis and generation of Pali words. The system works with regular inflectional paradigms and a lexical database. The generator is used to build a collection of inflected and derived words, which in turn is used by the analyzer. Generating and storing morphological forms along with the corresponding morphological information allows for efficient and simple look up by the analyzer. Indeed, by looking up a word and extracting the attached morphological information, the analyzer does not have to compute this information. As we must, however, assume the lexical database to be incomplete, the system can also work without the dictionary component, using a rule-based approach.

Abstract:I introduce a simple but efficient method to solve one of the critical aspects of English grammar which is the relationship between active sentence and passive sentence. In fact, an active sentence and its corresponding passive sentence express the same meaning, but their structure is different. I utilized Prolog [4] along with Definite Clause Grammars (DCG) [5] for doing the conversion between active sentence and passive sentence. Some advanced techniques were also used such as Extra Arguments, Extra Goals, Lexicon, etc. I tried to solve a variety of cases of active and passive sentences such as 12 English tenses, modal verbs, negative form, etc. More details and my contributions will be presented in the following sections. Abstract:This paper proposes a new way to improve the performance of dependency parser: subdividing verbs according to their grammatical functions and integrating the information of verb subclasses into lexicalized parsing model. Firstly, the scheme of verb subdivision is described. Secondly, a maximum entropy model is presented to distinguish verb subclasses. Finally, a statistical parser is developed to evaluate the verb subdivision. Experimental results indicate that the use of verb subclasses has a good influence on parsing performance.

Abstract:Distributional semantics, the quantitative study of meaning variation and change through corpus collocations, is currently one of the most productive research areas in computational linguistics. The wider availability of big data and of reproducible algorithms for analysis has boosted its application to living languages in recent years. But can we use distributional semantics to study a language with such a limited corpus as ancient Greek? And can this approach tell us something about such vexed questions in classical studies as the language and composition of the Homeric poems? Our paper will compare the semantic flexibility of formulae involving transitive verbs in archaic Greek epic to similar verb phrases in a non-formulaic corpus, in order to detect unique patterns of variation in formulae. To address this, we present AGVaLex, a computational valency lexicon for ancient Greek automatically extracted from the Ancient Greek Dependency Treebank. The lexicon contains quantitative corpus-driven morphological, syntactic and lexical information about verbs and their arguments, such as objects, subjects, and prepositional phrases, and has a wide range of applications for the study of the language of ancient Greek authors.
Filling the Gaps in Ancient Akkadian Texts: A Masked Language Modelling Approach

Abstract:We present models which complete missing text given transliterations of ancient Mesopotamian documents, originally written on cuneiform clay tablets (2500 BCE - 100 CE). Due to the tablets' deterioration, scholars often rely on contextual cues to manually fill in missing parts in the text in a subjective and time-consuming process. We identify that this challenge can be formulated as a masked language modelling task, used mostly as a pretraining objective for contextualized language models. Following, we develop several architectures focusing on the Akkadian language, the lingua franca of the time. We find that despite data scarcity (1M tokens) we can achieve state of the art performance on missing tokens prediction (89% hit@5) using a greedy decoding scheme and pretraining on data from other languages and different time periods. Finally, we conduct human evaluations showing the applicability of our models in assisting experts to transcribe texts in extinct languages.

A Truly Joint Neural Architecture for Segmentation and Parsing

Abstract:Contemporary multilingual dependency parsers can parse a diverse set of languages, but for Morphologically Rich Languages (MRLs), performance is attested to be lower than other languages. The key challenge is that, due to high morphological complexity and ambiguity of the space-delimited input tokens, the linguistic units that act as nodes in the tree are not known in advance. Pre-neural dependency parsers for MRLs subscribed to the joint morpho-syntactic hypothesis, stating that morphological segmentation and syntactic parsing should be solved jointly, rather than as a pipeline where segmentation precedes parsing. However, neural state-of-the-art parsers to date use a strict pipeline. In this paper we introduce a joint neural architecture where a lattice-based representation preserving all morphological ambiguity of the input is provided to an arc-factored model, which then solves the morphological segmentation and syntactic parsing tasks at once. Our experiments on Hebrew, a rich and highly ambiguous MRL, demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on parsing, tagging and segmentation of the Hebrew section of UD, using a single model. This proposed architecture is LLM-based and language agnostic, providing a solid foundation for MRLs to obtain further performance improvements and bridge the gap with other languages.

Abstract:Computational lexical resources such as WordNet, PropBank, VerbNet, and FrameNet are in regular use in various NLP applications, assisting in the never-ending quest for richer, more precise semantic representations. Coherent class-based organization of lexical units in VerbNet and FrameNet can improve the efficiency of processing by clustering similar items together and sharing descriptions. However, class members are sometimes quite different, and the clustering in both can gloss over useful fine-grained semantic distinctions. FrameNet officially eschews syntactic considerations and focuses primarily on semantic coherence, associating nouns, verbs and adjectives with the same semantic frame, while VerbNet considers both syntactic and semantic factors in defining a class of verbs, relying heavily on meaning-preserving diathesis alternations. Many VerbNet classes significantly overlap in membership with similar FrameNet Frames, e.g., VerbNet Cooking-45.3 and FrameNet Apply_heat, but some VerbNet classes are so heterogeneous as to be difficult to characterize semantically, e.g., Other_cos-45.4. We discuss a recent addition to the VerbNet class semantics, verb-specific semantic features, that provides significant enrichment to the information associated with verbs in each VerbNet class. They also implicitly group together verbs sharing semantic features within a class, forming more semantically coherent subclasses. These efforts began with introspection and dictionary lookup, and progressed to automatic techniques, such as using NLTK sentiment analysis on verb members of VerbNet classes with an Experiencer argument role, to assign positive, negative or neutral labels to them. More recently we found the Brandeis Semantic Ontology (BSO) to be an invaluable source of rich semantic information and were able to use a VerbNet-BSO mapping to find fine-grained distinctions in the semantic features of verb members of 25 VerbNet classes. This not only confirmed the assignments previously made to classes such as Admire-31.2, but also gave a more fine-grained semantic decomposition for the members. Also, for the Judgment-31.1 class, the new method revealed new, more fine-grained existing semantic features for the verbs. Overall, the BSO mapping produced promising results, and as a manually curated resource, we have confidence the results are reliable and need little (if any) further hand-correction. We discuss our various techniques, illustrating the results with specific classes.

Abstract:GLR* is a recently developed robust version of the Generalized LR Parser, that can parse almost ANY input sentence by ignoring unrecognizable parts of the sentence. On a given input sentence, the parser returns a collection of parses that correspond to maximal, or close to maximal, parsable subsets of the original input. This paper describes recent work on developing an integrated heuristic scheme for selecting the parse that is deemed ``best'' from such a collection. We describe the heuristic measures used and their combination scheme. Preliminary results from experiments conducted on parsing speech recognized spontaneous speech are also reported.

Abstract:Arabic morphological analysis is one of the essential stages in Arabic Natural Language Processing. In this paper we present an approach for Arabic morphological analysis. This approach is based on Arabic morphological automaton (AMAUT). The proposed technique uses a morphological database realized using XMODEL language. Arabic morphology represents a special type of morphological systems because it is based on the concept of scheme to represent Arabic words. We use this concept to develop the Arabic morphological automata. The proposed approach has development standardization aspect. It can be exploited by NLP applications such as syntactic and semantic analysis, information retrieval, machine translation and orthographical correction. The proposed approach is compared with Xerox Arabic Analyzer and Smrz Arabic Analyzer.

Abstract:The standard HPSG analysis of Germanic verb clusters can not explain the observed narrow-scope readings of adjuncts in such verb clusters. We present an extension of the HPSG analysis that accounts for the systematic ambiguity of the scope of adjuncts in verb cluster constructions, by treating adjuncts as members of the subcat list. The extension uses powerful recursive lexical rules, implemented as complex constraints. We show how `delayed evaluation' techniques from constraint-logic programming can be used to process such lexical rules.

Abstract:We describe a recently developed corpus annotation scheme for evaluating parsers that avoids shortcomings of current methods. The scheme encodes grammatical relations between heads and dependents, and has been used to mark up a new public-domain corpus of naturally occurring English text. We show how the corpus can be used to evaluate the accuracy of a robust parser, and relate the corpus to extant resources.
A State-of-the-Art Morphosyntactic Parser and Lemmatizer for Ancient Greek

Abstract:This paper presents an experiment consisting in the comparison of six models to identify a state-of-the-art morphosyntactic parser and lemmatizer for Ancient Greek capable of annotating according to the Ancient Greek Dependency Treebank annotation scheme. A normalized version of the major collections of annotated texts was used to (i) train the baseline model Dithrax with randomly initialized character embeddings and (ii) fine-tune Trankit and four recent models pretrained on Ancient Greek texts, i.e., GreBERTa and PhilBERTa for morphosyntactic annotation and GreTA and PhilTa for lemmatization. A Bayesian analysis shows that Dithrax and Trankit annotate morphology practically equivalently, while syntax is best annotated by Trankit and lemmata by GreTa. The results of the experiment suggest that token embeddings are not sufficient to achieve high UAS and LAS scores unless they are coupled with a modeling strategy specifically designed to capture syntactic relationships. The dataset and best-performing models are made available online for reuse.

Abstract:We present an open source morphological analyzer for Japanese nouns, verbs and adjectives. The system builds upon the morphological analyzing capabilities of MeCab to incorporate finer details of classification such as politeness, tense, mood and voice attributes. We implemented our analyzer in the form of a finite state transducer using the open source finite state compiler FOMA toolkit. Abstract:A generate and test algorithm is described which parses a surface form into one or more lexical entries using linearly ordered phonological rules. This algorithm avoids the exponential expansion of search space which a naive parsing algorithm would face by encoding into the form being parsed the ambiguities which arise during parsing. The algorithm has been implemented and tested on real language data, and its speed compares favorably with that of a KIMMO-type parser.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a surge in interest in NLP driven by ChatGPT. ChatGPT, a transformer-based generative language model of substantial scale, exhibits versatility in performing various tasks based on natural language. Nevertheless, large language models often exhibit poor performance in solving mathematics questions that require reasoning. Prior research has demonstrated the effectiveness of chain-of-thought prompting in enhancing reasoning capabilities. Now, we aim to investigate whether fine-tuning a model for the generation of Prolog codes, a logic language, and subsequently passing these codes to a compiler can further improve accuracy. Consequently, we employ chain-of-thought to fine-tune LLaMA7B as a baseline model and develop other fine-tuned LLaMA7B models for the generation of Prolog code, Prolog code + chain-of-thought, and chain-of-thought + Prolog code, respectively. The results reveal that the Prolog generation model surpasses the baseline in performance, while the combination generation models do not yield significant improvements. The Prolog corpus based on GSM8K and the correspondingly finetuned Prolog generation model based on LLaMA7B are released to the research community.
Log Parsing with Self-Generated In-Context Learning and Self-Correction

Abstract:Log parsing transforms log messages into structured formats, serving as a crucial step for log analysis. Despite a variety of log parsing methods that have been proposed, their performance on evolving log data remains unsatisfactory due to reliance on human-crafted rules or learning-based models with limited training data. The recent emergence of large language models (LLMs) has demonstrated strong abilities in understanding natural language and code, making it promising to apply LLMs for log parsing. Consequently, several studies have proposed LLM-based log parsers. However, LLMs may produce inaccurate templates, and existing LLM-based log parsers directly use the template generated by the LLM as the parsing result, hindering the accuracy of log parsing. Furthermore, these log parsers depend heavily on historical log data as demonstrations, which poses challenges in maintaining accuracy when dealing with scarce historical log data or evolving log data. To address these challenges, we propose AdaParser, an effective and adaptive log parsing framework using LLMs with self-generated in-context learning (SG-ICL) and self-correction. To facilitate accurate log parsing, AdaParser incorporates a novel component, a template corrector, which utilizes the LLM to correct potential parsing errors in the templates it generates. In addition, AdaParser maintains a dynamic candidate set composed of previously generated templates as demonstrations to adapt evolving log data. Extensive experiments on public large-scale datasets show that AdaParser outperforms state-of-the-art methods across all metrics, even in zero-shot scenarios. Moreover, when integrated with different LLMs, AdaParser consistently enhances the performance of the utilized LLMs by a large margin.

Abstract:This technical report presents a general framework for parsing a variety of grammar formalisms. We develop a grammar formalism, called an Abstract Grammar, which is general enough to represent grammars at many levels of the hierarchy, including Context Free Grammars, Minimalist Grammars, and Generalized Context-free Grammars. We then develop a single parsing framework which is capable of parsing grammars which are at least up to GCFGs on the hierarchy. Our parsing framework exposes a grammar interface, so that it can parse any particular grammar formalism that can be reduced to an Abstract Grammar.
