Abstract:Over the past years, nanostructured metalenses with thin form factors have been extensively studied for their potential in consumer and industrial applications. Despite significant advancements, current metalenses struggle to achieve high numerical aperture (NA), manufacturable structures, broad working bandwidth, and extended depth of focus (DOF) simultaneously. This paper introduces a comprehensive inverse design framework that facilitates the rapid development of polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, effective in both frequency and spatial domains. The framework employs shape-constrained topology optimization to define horizontal ring profiles, along with discrete particle swarm optimization to manage discretized ring heights. Two immersed silicon carbide metalenses are demonstrated to showcase this framework's capability, providing near-unity NAs for enhanced photon collection. The first design is an extended DOF metalens, exhibiting a DOF over four times the light wavelength and achieving a maximum diffraction efficiency of 23%, close to the theoretical limit. The second design achieves broadband achromaticity, suppressing chromatic aberrations across a wide 300 nm bandwidth (850-1150 nm) while maintaining an average diffraction efficiency of 10%. This methodology serves as a valuable tool for deploying functional metalenses with implications for nanophotonics, quantum optics, and quantum nanotechnology. An effective inverse design framework for polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, optimized for frequency and spatial domains is introduced. Using shape-constrained topology optimization and discrete particle swarm optimization, silicon carbide metalenses with extended-depth-of-focus and broadband achromaticity is developed across a 300 nm bandwidth, achieving maximum diffraction efficiencies of 23% and 13.6%, respectively. Abstract:Sub-wavelength diffractive optics, commonly known as metasurfaces, have recently garnered significant attention for their ability to create ultra-thin flat lenses with extremely short focal lengths. Several materials with different refractive indices have been used to create metasurface lenses (metalenses). In this paper, we analyze the role of material refractive indices on the performance of these metalenses. We employ both forward and inverse design methodologies to perform our analysis. We found that, while high refractive index materials allow for extreme reduction of the focal length, for moderate focal lengths and numerical aperture (<0.6), there is no appreciable difference in focal spot-size and focusing efficiency for metalenses made of different materials with refractive indices ranging between n= 1.25 to n=3.5.

Abstract:Optical elements play a crucial role in many modern systems, from cellphones to missiles. The miniaturization trend poses a challenge to optics, since classical lenses and mirrors tend to be bulky. One way of dealing with this challenge is using flat optics. For many years flat optics has been implemented using diffractive optics technology, but in the last two decades a new technology called metasurfaces has emerged. This technology does not replace diffractive optics, but rather expands on it, leveraging the new ability to manufacture subwavelength features on optical substrates. For imaging and focusing applications, diffractive lenses and metalenses are used, as a subset of diffractive optics and metasurfaces, respectively. Recently there has been debate over whether metalenses offer any real advantages over diffractive lenses. In this commentary we will try to gain some insight into this debate and present our opinion on the subject.

Abstract:Traditional optical lenses and optical systems implement electromagnetic wave control based on the light propagation effect. So they usually suffer from the bulky size. Recently, metasurfaces comprised of artificial subwavelength structures have been widely studied, since they take great advantages of their sub-wavelength thickness and provide arbitrary control of electromagnetic waves. Here, the electromagnetic wave control mechanism is introduced. Then, we analyze the monochromatic aberrations and chromatic aberrations of the metalens and the corresponding image quality evaluation methods. Also, we discuss the research progress and applications of metalens for imaging. The exist problems and future goals are pointed out at the end of the review. Based on the advantages of portability and a high degree of design freedom, metalens are expected to replace the traditional imaging devices in many applications. High efficiency, large field of view, broadband, reconfigurable and tunable imaging devices based on metasurfaces will help in important future development directions.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have recently emerged as a promising technology to realize flat optical components with customized functionalities. In particular, their application to lenses in various imaging systems is of significant interest. However, a systematic and complete study of the focusing and imaging behavior of metalenses has not yet been conducted. In this work we analyze not only the on-axis focusing performance, but also the field-dependent wavefront aberrations via a phase-retrieval optimization method. We find that, particularly for high-NA metalenses, the field-dependent geometrical aberrations like coma are dominant at the design wavelength, while for longer and shorter operation wavelengths, the effective numerical aperture is decreased and mainly spherical aberrations are dominant. Additionally, we investigate the spectral and angular bandwidth of a polarization-insensitive metalens by analyzing the metalens efficiencies as a function of numerical aperture, field angle, and wavelength. We then compare the metalens performance to its refractive and diffractive counterparts and show how the respective metalens properties affect the imaging performance. For this purpose, we perform an imaging simulation for these three cases based on their field- and wavelength-dependent absolute deflection efficiencies and analyze the imaging properties of an extended test object. Our calculations show that metalenses can outperform diffractive lenses in terms of their angle-dependent efficiency for large deflection angles.

Abstract:Lightweight, miniaturized optical imaging systems are vastly anticipated in these fields of aerospace exploration, industrial vision, consumer electronics, and medical imaging. However, conventional optical techniques are intricate to downscale as refractive lenses mostly rely on phase accumulation. Metalens, composed of subwavelength nanostructures that locally control light waves, offers a disruptive path for small-scale imaging systems. Recent advances in the design and nanofabrication of dielectric metalenses have led to some high-performance practical optical systems. This review outlines the exciting developments in the aforementioned area whilst highlighting the challenges of using dielectric metalenses to replace conventional optics in miniature optical systems. After a brief introduction to the fundamental physics of dielectric metalenses, the progress and challenges in terms of the typical performances are introduced. The supplementary discussion on the common challenges hindering further development is also presented, including the limitations of the conventional design methods, difficulties in scaling up, and device integration. Furthermore, the potential approaches to address the existing challenges are also deliberated.

Abstract:We use inverse design to discover metalens structures that exhibit broadband, achromatic focusing across low, moderate, and high numerical apertures. We show that standard unit-cell approaches cannot achieve high-efficiency high-NA focusing, even at a single frequency, due to the incompleteness of the unit-cell basis, and we provide computational upper bounds on their maximum efficiencies. At low NA, our devices exhibit the highest theoretical efficiencies to date. At high NA-of 0.9 with translation-invariant films and of 0.99 with "freeform" structures-our designs are the first to exhibit achromatic high-NA focusing.

Abstract:A vectorial diffraction model is established to comprehensively analyze the theoretical limit and the rapid efficiency decline of high‐NA metalens, as well as the efficiency gap for conventional metalens. Based on field similarity, topology optimization method with geometric constraints control is adopted to inversely design a high‐efficiency high‐NA freeform metalens, showing a great improvement of focusing efficiency for different NAs. Optical metasurface is a 2D array of subwavelength meta‐atoms that arbitrarily manipulates amplitude, polarization, and wavefront of incident light, offering great advantages in miniaturization and integration. However, the presuppositions hidden in conventional unit‐cell‐based design approach, including discrete phase sampling, local periodicity approximation, and normal response, imply that the responses and interactions of meta‐atoms are almost impossible to be accurately modeled, thus impeding the effective design of high‐efficiency ultrahigh numerical aperture (NA) metalens. Here, based on vector diffraction theory and plane wave expansion method, theoretical limitation of metalens efficiency is comprehensively investigated. It is identified that for high‐NA metalens, theoretical focusing efficiency is limited by diffraction capability of vector field, while evanescent wave attenuation dominates theoretical efficiency decline for ultrahigh‐NA metalens. It is also shown that the efficiency of conventional metalens has a huge gap from theoretical limitation, owing to imperfect diffractive focusing and impedance mismatch reflections. To fill such efficiency gap, the high‐efficiency high‐NA freeform metalens based on topology optimization is further demonstrated. Particularly, topology geometric constraints are utilized to reduce minimum feature size while keeping high efficiency. The results could shed new light on the understanding and design of ultrahigh‐NA metalens and find promising applications in optical imaging, microscopy, and lithography.

Abstract:Metalenses have shown great promise in their ability to function as ultracompact optical systems for focusing and imaging. Remarkably, several designs have been recently demonstrated that operate over a large range of frequencies with minimized chromatic aberrations, potentially paving the way for ultrathin achromatic optics. Here, we derive fundamental bandwidth limits that apply to broadband optical metalenses regardless of their implementation. Specifically, we discuss how the product between achievable time delay and bandwidth is limited in any time-invariant system, and we apply well-established bounds on this product to a general focusing system. We then show that all metalenses designed thus far obey the appropriate bandwidth limit. The derived physical bounds provide a useful metric to compare and assess the performance of different devices, and they offer fundamental insight into how to design better broadband metalenses.

Abstract:Metalenses are flat lenses, where sub-wavelength, so-called meta-atoms manipulate the electric field to perform a given lens function. Compared to traditional lenses, the two main drawbacks of metalenses are their achromatic limitations and low efficiencies. While an abundance of simulations show that efficiencies above 90% are attainable for low numerical apertures (NA), experimental reports showing such high efficiencies are limited. Here, we use electron-beam lithography (EBL) to realize a set of lenses with varying NA from 0.08 to 0.93. The low NAs were expected to fit the model, and the higher NAs determine the validity range of the model. We find that measured efficiencies above 92% for NA = 0.24 are achievable, and that a slight modification of the simulation model extends its validility to NA = 0.6. Based on our results, we discuss that the lower efficiencies reported in the literature are caused by low-fidelity manufacturing, closing the efficiency gap between measurements and simulation in metalens fabrication.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, also known as 2D artificial metamaterials, are attracting great attention due to their unprecedented performances and functionalities that are hard to achieve by conventional diffractive or refractive elements. With their sub-wavelength optical scatterers, metasurfaces have been utilized to freely modify different characteristics of incident light such as amplitude, polarization, phase, and frequency. Compared to traditional bulky lenses, metasurface lenses possess the advantages of flatness, light weight, and compatibility with semiconductor manufacture technology. They have been widely applied to a range of scenarios including imaging, solar energy harvesting, optoelectronic detection, etc. In this review, we will first introduce the fundamental design principles for metalens, and then report recent theoretical and experimental progress with emphasis on methods to correct chromatic and monochromatic aberrations. Finally, typical applications of metalenses and corresponding design rules will be presented, followed by a brief outlook on the prospects and challenges of this field.

Abstract:<p>This paper provides a mathematical approach to the study of chromatic aberration in metalenses. It is shown that radiation of a given wavelength is refracted according to a generalized Snell's law, which together with the notion of envelope, yields the existence of phase discontinuities. This is then used to establish a quantitative measure of dispersion in metalenses, concluding that in the visible spectrum it has the same order of magnitude as for standard lenses.</p>

Abstract:Multilevel diffractive lenses (MDLs) have emerged as an alternative to both conventional diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and metalenses for applications ranging from imaging to holographic and immersive displays. Recent work has shown that by harnessing structural parametric optimization of DOEs, one can design MDLs to enable multiple functionalities like achromaticity, depth of focus, wide-angle imaging, etc. with great ease in fabrication. Therefore, it becomes critical to understand how fabrication errors still do affect the performance of MDLs and numerically evaluate the trade-off between efficiency and initial parameter selection, right at the onset of designing an MDL, i.e., even before putting it into fabrication. Here, we perform a statistical simulation-based study on MDLs (primarily operating in the THz regime) to analyse the impact of various fabrication imperfections (single and multiple) on the final structure as a function of the number of ring height levels. Furthermore, we also evaluate the performance of these same MDLs with the change in the refractive index of the constitutive material. We use focusing efficiency as the evaluation criterion in our numerical analysis; since it is the most fundamental property that can be used to compare and assess the performance of lenses (and MDLs) in general designed for any application with any specific functionality.
High-space-bandwidth product characterization of metalenses with Fourier ptychographic microscopy

Abstract:Large numerical aperture (NA) and large aperture metalenses have shown significant performance and abundant applications in biomedical and astronomical imaging fields. However, the high space-bandwidth product (SBP) requirements for measuring the phase of these metalenses, characterized by small phase periods and large apertures, have resulted in no effective techniques for sufficient characterization. In this paper, we propose a high SBP phase characterization technique using Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM), enabling a high spatial resolution and wide field of view simultaneously. To demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of this technique, we achieve a high SBP (4.91 megapixels) measurement and characterization for focusing and focusing vortex metalenses, quantitatively displaying the effect of fabrication error on their typical optical performance. Furthermore, we characterize the aberration type and amount of wavefront deviations caused by fabrication. We also analyze compensation methods for different aberrations based on the wavefront characterization results, providing a targeted alignment strategy for optimizing overall optical system performance. We believe that our high SBP characterization technique cannot only help to improve metalens design but also optimize its fabrication processing, which will pave the way for the diversified applications of metalenses.

Abstract:Metalenses are emerging as an alternative to digital micromirror devices (DMDs), with the advantages of compactness and flexibility. The exploration of metalenses has ignited enthusiasm among optical engineers, positioning them as the forthcoming frontier in technology. In this paper, we advocate for the implementation of the phase-change material, Sb2Se3, capable of providing swift, reversible, non-volatile focusing and defocusing within the 1550 nm telecom spectrum. The lens, equipped with a robust ITO microheater, offers unparalleled functionality and constitutes a significant step toward dynamic metalenses that can be integrated with beamforming applications. After a meticulously conducted microfabrication process, we showcase a device capable of rapid tuning (0.1 MHz level) for metalens focusing and defocusing at C band communication, achieved by alternating the PCM state between the amorphous and crystalline states. The findings from the experiment show that the device has a high contrast ratio for switching of 28.7 dB.

Polarization-based Metalenses with High Numerical Aperture and Focusing Efficiency Utilizing Silicon-rich Nitride

Abstract:We explore the cutting-edge application of silicon-rich nitride (SRN) in the realm of high numerical aperture (NA) metalens design, focusing on the crucial role of pitch size optimization in amplifying lens efficiency through advanced simulations. Our investigation unveils how the exceptional tunable high refractive index of SRN can be harnessed to achieve significant advancements in metalens performance. By meticulously designing and simulating two innovative SRN-based metalenses - Mk1, with an NA of 0.9, reaching an impressive 75% focusing efficiency with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.53{\lambda}, and Mk2, with an NA of 0.99, achieving a 42% efficiency while maintaining an FWHM of 0.48{\lambda}. We demonstrate the critical influence of reduced pitch size on enhancing efficiency. This study not only highlights the unparalleled potential of SRN in optimizing metalens efficiency but also represents a significant leap forward in the field of nanophotonics, offering new pathways for the development of highly efficient flat photonic devices.

Abstract:<p>Recently, there are growing interests in developing super‐resolution metalenses for applications of focusing and imaging. On one hand, various sub‐diffraction metalenses have been demonstrated; however, most of them only work at a single wavelength or multiple discrete wavelengths. On the other hand, the previously reported broadband achromatic metalenses are diffraction‐limited, or their focal spots are larger than the corresponding Abbe diffraction limit, 0.5λ/NA, where λ and NA are the lens working wavelength and numerical aperture. In the present work, an approach of realizing broadband achromatic sub‐diffraction focusing is proposed utilizing both dispersion engineering and wave front manipulating through amplitude modulation. To verify this concept, based on high‐index dielectric meta‐atoms, a broadband achromatic sub‐diffraction focusing metalens is designed with a radius of 5.11 mm, a focal length of 40.39 mm, and NA of 0.125 in the terahertz frequency range of 2.29–2.70 THz by simultaneously controlling the distributions group of the delay, frequency‐dependent phase, and amplitude transmittance. Both theoretical and experimental results demonstrate the performance of achromatic sub‐diffraction focusing within the bandwidth. The proposed approach provides a simple way to achieve broadband achromatic super‐resolution metalenses, which may have promising potentials in various applications of super‐resolution focusing and super‐resolution imaging.</p>
