Abstract:The magnonic excitations of a dimerized, one-dimensional, antiferromagnetic chain can be trivial or topological depending on the signs and magnitudes of the alternating exchange couplings and the anisotropy. The topological phase that occurs when the signs of the two different exchange couplings alternate is qualitatively different from that of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. A material that may exhibit these properties is the quasi-one-dimensional material MoI$_3$ that consists of dimerized chains weakly coupled to adjacent chains. The magnetic ground state and its excitations are analyzed both analytically and numerically using exchange and anisotropy parameters extracted from density functional theory calculations.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is: In antiferromagnetic chains, by changing the sign and magnitude of exchange couplings and the anisotropy constant, topological magnonic states can be realized. Specifically, the authors investigate whether magnon excitations in a 1D antiferromagnetic chain can enter a non-trivial topological phase under alternating antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) exchange couplings, and how this topological phase differs from the topological phase in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. The main contributions of the paper include: 1. **Exploration of topological properties**: By analyzing exchange couplings and anisotropy parameters, the topological magnonic states in antiferromagnetic chains are explored. 2. **Material example**: It is proposed that the quasi-1D material MoI₃ may exhibit these topological magnonic properties, as this material consists of weakly coupled dimerized chains. 3. **Combination of theory and experiment**: Using exchange coupling constants and anisotropy energies obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations, combined with linear spin wave theory and classical effective field theory, a detailed analysis of the magnon excitation spectrum is conducted. 4. **Topological phase transition**: It is revealed that when the exchange coupling J₂ becomes negative, the magnon spectrum can enter a non-trivial topological state, which is different from the topological phase in the SSH model. In summary, this paper aims to deeply understand the topological magnonic properties in 1D antiferromagnetic chains through a combination of theoretical and experimental methods, and to explore their potential application prospects.
