Abstract:In this paper, we describe the flow of 2-surfaces in R(3) for some negative power of the Gauss curvature. We show that strictly convex surfaces expanding with normal velocity K(-alpha), when 1/2 < alpha <= 1, converge to infinity in finite time. After appropriate rescaling, they converge to spheres. In the 2-dimensional case, our results close an apparent gap in the powers considered by previous authors, that is, for alpha is an element of (0, 1/2] by Urbas and Huisken and for alpha = 1 by Schnurer.

Abstract:We show that dynamical systems with phi-mixing measures have local escape rates which are exponential with rate 1 at non-periodic points and equal to the extremal index at periodic points. We apply this result to equilibrium states on subshifts of finite type, Gibbs-Markov systems, expanding interval maps, Gibbs states on conformal repellers, and more generally to Young towers, and by extension to all systems that can be modeled by a Young tower.

Abstract:We prove that the geodesic flow on a geometrically finite locally symmetric space of negative curvature is exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. The approach is based on constructing a suitable anisotropic Banach space on which the infinitesimal generator of the flow admits an essential spectral gap. A key step in the proof involves estimating certain oscillatory integrals against the Patterson-Sullivan measure. For this purpose, we prove a general result of independent interest asserting that measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$ that do not concentrate near proper affine subspaces enjoy polynomial Fourier decay outside of a sparse set of frequencies. As an intermediate step, we show that the $L^q$-dimension ($1<q\leq \infty$) of iterated self-convolutions of such measures tend towards that of the ambient space. Our analysis also yields that the Laplace transform of the correlation function of smooth observables extends meromorphically to the entire complex plane in the convex cocompact case and to a strip of explicit size beyond the imaginary axis in the case the manifold admits cusps.

Negative regularity mixing for random volume preserving diffeomorphisms

Abstract:We consider the negative regularity mixing properties of random volume preserving diffeomorphisms on a compact manifold without boundary. We give general criteria so that the associated random transfer operator mixes $H^{-\delta}$ observables exponentially fast in $H^{-\delta}$ (with a deterministic rate), a property that is false in the deterministic setting. The criteria apply to a wide variety of random diffeomorphisms, such as discrete-time iid random diffeomorphisms, the solution maps of suitable classes of stochastic differential equations, and to the case of advection-diffusion by solutions of the stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb T^2$. In the latter case, we show that the zero diffusivity passive scalar with a stochastic source possesses a unique stationary measure describing "ideal" scalar turbulence. The proof is based on techniques inspired by the use of pseudodifferential operators and anisotropic Sobolev spaces in the deterministic setting.

Abstract:For a surface semiflow that is a suspension of a $ C^{1+\alpha} $ expanding Markov interval map, we prove that, under the assumptions that the roof function is Lipschitz continuous and not cohomologous to a locally constant function, the semiflow exhibits stretched-exponential mixing with respect to the SRB measure. This result extends to hyperbolic skew-product semiflows and hyperbolic attractors. Specifically, codimension-one topologically mixing Anosov flows with Lipschitz continuous stable foliations demonstrate stretched-exponential mixing with respect to their SRB measures.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish exponential mixing of frame flows for convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds of arbitrary dimension with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. Some immediate applications include an asymptotic formula for matrix coefficients with an exponential error term as well as the exponential equidistribution of holonomy of closed geodesics. The main technical result is a spectral bound on transfer operators twisted by holonomy, which we obtain by building on Dolgopyat's method.

Abstract:In this paper we show that a geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one is time-preserving semi-conjugate to a continuous expansive flow which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application we show that the geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one has a unique measure of maximal entropy. This gives an alternative proof of Climenhaga–Knieper–War Theorem.

Abstract:For an expanding (unstable) foliation of a diffeomorphism, we use a natural dynamical averaging to construct transverse measures, which we call maximal , describing the statistics of how the iterates of a given leaf intersect the cross-sections to the foliation. For a suitable class of diffeomorphisms, we prove that this averaging converges, even exponentially fast, and the limit measures have finite ergodic decompositions. These results are obtained through relating the maximal transverse measures to the maximal u -entropy measures of the diffeomorphism (see [UVYY]).

Uniform exponential mixing for congruence covers of convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a Zariski dense convex cocompact subgroup contained in an arithmetic lattice of $\operatorname{SO}(n, 1)^{\circ}$. We prove uniform exponential mixing of the geodesic flow for congruence covers of the hyperbolic manifold $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{H}^n$ avoiding finitely many prime ideals. This extends the work of Oh-Winter who proved the result for the $n = 2$ case. Following their approach, we use Dolgopyat's method for the proof of exponential mixing of the geodesic flow. We do this uniformly over congruence covers by establishing uniform spectral bounds for the congruence transfer operators associated to the geodesic flow. This requires another key ingredient which is the expander machinery due to Bourgain-Gamburd-Sarnak extended by Golsefidy-Varjú.

Counting geodesics on expander surfaces

Abstract:We study properties of typical closed geodesics on expander surfaces of high genus, i.e. closed hyperbolic surfaces with a uniform spectral gap of the Laplacian. Under an additional systole lower bound assumption, we show almost every geodesic of length much greater than $\sqrt{g}\log g$ is non-simple. And we prove almost every closed geodesic of length much greater than $g (\log g)^2$ is filling, i.e. each component of the complement of the geodesic is a topological disc. Our results apply to Weil-Petersson random surfaces, random covers of a fixed surface, and Brooks-Makover random surfaces, since these models are known to have uniform spectral gap asymptotically almost surely. Our proof technique involves adapting Margulis' counting strategy to work at low length scales.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a Zariski dense $\Theta$-Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group for some nonempty subset of simple roots $\Theta$. In the Anosov setting, there is a natural compact metric space $\mathcal{X}$ equipped with a family of translation flows $\{a^{\mathsf{v}}_t\}_{t \in \mathbb R}$, parameterized by vectors $\mathsf{v}$ in the interior of the $\Theta$-limit cone $\mathcal{L}_\Theta$ of $\Gamma$, and they are Hölder conjugate to Hölder reparametrizations of the Gromov geodesic flow. We prove that for all $\mathsf{v}$ outside an exceptional cone $\mathscr{E} \subset \operatorname{int}\mathcal{L}_\Theta$, which is a smooth image of the walls of the Weyl chamber, the translation flow is exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure associated to $\mathsf{v}$. Moreover, the exponential rate is uniform for a compact set of such $\mathsf{v}$. We also obtain an essential spectral gap formulated in terms of the Selberg zeta function and a prime orbit theorem with a power saving error term. Our proof relies on Lie theoretic techniques to prove the crucial local non-integrability condition (LNIC) for the translation flows and thereby implement Dolgopyat's method in a uniform fashion. The exceptional cone $\mathscr{E}$ arises from the failure of LNIC for those vectors.

Abstract:Let $ T\colon[0,1]^d\to [0,1]^d $ be a piecewise expanding map with an absolutely continuous invariant measure $ \mu $. Let $ \{H_n\} $ be a sequence of hyperrectangles or hyperboloids centered at the origin. Denote by $ \mathcal R(\{H_n\}) $ the set of points $ \mathbf x $ such that $ T^n\mathbf x\in \mathbf x+H_n $ for infinitely many $ n\in\mathbb N $, where $ \mathbf x+H_n $ is the translation of $ H_n $. We prove that if $ \mu $ is exponential mixing and the density of $ \mu $ is sufficiently regular, then the $\mu$-measure of $ \mathcal R(\{H_n\}) $ is zero or full according to the sum of the volumes of $ H_n $ converges or not. In the case that $ T $ is a matrix transformation, our results extend a previous work of Kirsebom, Kunde, and Persson [to appear in Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa Cl. Sci., 2023] in two aspects: by allowing the matrix to be non-integer and by allowing the `target' sets $ H_n $ to be hyperrectangles or hyperboloids. We also obtain a dimension result when $ T $ is a diagonal matrix transformation.

Abstract:We investigate mixing properties of piecewise affine non-Markovian maps acting on or and preserving the Lebesgue measure, which are natural generalizations of the heterochaos baker maps introduced in Saiki et al. (Nonlinearity 34:5744–5761, 2021). These maps are skew products over uniformly expanding or hyperbolic bases, and the fiber direction is a center in which both contracting and expanding behaviors coexist. We prove that these maps are mixing of all orders. For maps with a mostly expanding or contracting center, we establish exponential mixing for Hölder functions. Using this result, for the Dyck system originating in the theory of formal languages, we establish exponential mixing for Hölder functions with respect to its two coexisting ergodic measures of maximal entropy.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a compact manifold without conjugate points and with visibility universal covering. We show that its geodesic flow has a time-preserving expansive factor which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application, assuming further the so-called entropy-gap we prove the uniqueness of the measure of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow. For the other results we restrict our setting assuming furthermore the continuity of Green bundles and the existence of a hyperbolic closed geodesic. In this new context, we deduce that Green bundles are uniquely integrable and are tangent to the smooth leaves of the horospherical foliations. Moreover, we prove the above expansive factor acts on a compact topological manifold and its geodesic flow has a unique measure of maximal entropy which has full support.

Abstract:We consider Abelian covers of compact hyperbolic surfaces. We establish an asymptotic expansion of the correlations for the horocycle flow on $\mathbb{Z}^d$-covers, thus proving a strong form of Krickeberg mixing. We also prove that the spectral measures around $0$ of the Casimir operators on any increasing sequence of finite Abelian covers converge weakly to an absolutely continuous measure.

Abstract:The space of surfaces $\mathbf{X}: [0,1]^2 \to \mathbb{R}^d$ is equipped with natural horizontal and vertical concatenation operations, and we study representations of surfaces which preserve this algebraic structure. The framework of higher category theory allows us to formalize this notion in terms of a functor between double groupoids. We construct such functors by generalizing the classical concept of the path-ordered exponential as a nonabelian path integral. This generalization yields a notion of nonabelian surface integration, and is known in higher gauge theory as surface holonomy (or higher parallel transport). We extend these constructions from smooth surfaces to bounded controlled $p$-variation surfaces in the Young regime, with $p < 2$. By focusing on surface holonomy valued in higher generalizations of the classical matrix groups, called matrix double groups, we obtain explicit computations for piecewise linear approximations. Furthermore, we generalize the nonabelian Stokes' and Fubini theorems to the Young regime. Finally, we use these matrix surface holonomy functors to construct characteristic functions for random surfaces such as fractional Brownian sheets with Hurst parameter $h> \frac{1}{2}$.

Abstract:We consider improvements of Dirichlet's Theorem on space of matrices $M_{m,n}(R)$. It is shown that for a certain class of fractals $K\subset [0,1]^{mn}\subset M_{m,n}(R)$ of local maximal dimension Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be improved almost everywhere. This is shown using entropy and dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups.
