Abstract:In this work, we compare the structural and dynamic behavior of active filaments in two dimensions using tangential and push-pull models, including a variant with passive end monomers. These models serve as valuable frameworks for understanding self-organization in biological polymers and synthetic materials. At low activity, all models exhibit similar behaviors. Differences emerge in the intermediate range as activity increases, though at higher activity levels, their behaviors converge. Importantly, adjusting for differences in mean active force reveals nearly identical behavior across models. Our results highlight the importance of force definitions in active polymer simulations and provide insights into phase transitions across varying filament configurations.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the structure and dynamic behavior of active filaments in two - dimensional space by comparing the tangential model and the push - pull model, as well as a push - pull model variant with a passive - end monomer. These models serve as important frameworks for understanding the self - organization phenomena of biopolymers and synthetic materials. Through the comparative analysis of these models, researchers hope to reveal the influence of different definitions of active forces on the simulation of active polymers and provide insights into phase transitions under different filament configurations. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Similarities and differences between models**: At low activity levels, all models exhibit similar behavior; as the activity level increases, especially in the intermediate range, differences begin to emerge between the models; but at high activity levels, their behavior tends to be the same again. 2. **Importance of the definition of active force**: After adjusting the differences in the average active force between different models, it was found that the behavior of the models is almost the same. This emphasizes the importance of the definition of active force in the simulation of active polymers. 3. **Phase - transition phenomena**: In particular, at medium densities, phase - transition phenomena including the reentrant phase were explored. The reentrant phase refers to the state in which the system transforms from a helical state back to an open - chain state again. The research shows that although all models exhibit similar phases, the reentrant phase occurs at a higher activity level in the tangential model due to its smaller active force. 4. **Influence of activity level and bending stiffness**: The paper also explores the influence of different activity levels and bending stiffness on the behavior of the models. Especially at low bending stiffness, differences in the definition of activity level lead to a slight shift in the helical transition. Through these studies, the paper aims to provide a new perspective for understanding the physical properties of active matter systems, especially for applications in biological and artificial systems.
