Abstract:Assuming the existence of a Landau-Siegel zero, we establish an explicit Deuring-Heilbronn zero repulsion phenomenon for Dirichlet $L$-functions modulo $q$. Our estimate is uniform in the entire critical strip, and improves over the previous best known explicit estimate due to Thorner and Zaman.

Abstract:We prove an upper bound on the density of zeros very close to the critical line of the family of Dirichlet L‐functions of modulus q at height T. To do this, we derive an asymptotic for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet L‐functions uniformly in q and t. As a second application of the asymptotic formula, we prove that, for every integer q, at least 38.2% of zeros of the primitive Dirichlet L‐functions of modulus q lie on the critical line.

Abstract:Let $L(s,\pi)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\lambda_{\pi}(n)n^{-s}$ be an $L$-function that satisfies a weak form of the generalized Ramanujan conjecture. We prove that large partial sums of $\lambda_{\pi}(n)$ strongly repel the low-lying zeros of $L(s,\pi)$ away from the critical line. Our results extend and quantitatively improve preceding work of Granville and Soundararajan.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, it is known that at least half of the central values $L(\frac{1}{2},\chi)$ are non-vanishing as $\chi$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$. Unconditionally, this is known on average over both $\chi$ modulo $q$ and $Q/2 \leq q \leq 2Q$. We prove that for any $\delta>0$, there exist $\eta_1,\eta_2>0$ depending on $\delta$ such that the non-vanishing proportion for $L(\frac{1}{2},\chi)$ as $\chi$ ranges modulo $q$ with $q$ varying in short intervals of size $Q^{1-\eta_1}$ around $Q$ and in arithmetic progressions with moduli up to $Q^{\eta_2}$ is larger than $\frac{1}{2}-\delta$.

Abstract:For certain families of $L$-functions, we prove that if each $L$-function in the family has only real zeros in a fixed yet arbitrarily small neighborhood of $s=1$, then one may considerably improve upon the known results on Landau-Siegel zeros. Sarnak and the third author proved a similar result under much more restrictive hypotheses.

Abstract:In this paper, we give Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients that have Riemann's functional equation and real zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions. The details are as follows. Let $L(s,\chi)$ be the Dirichlet $L$-function and $G(\chi)$ be the Gauss sum associate with a primitive Dirichlet character $\chi$ (${\rm{mod}} \,\, q$). Put $f (s,\chi) := q^s L(s,\chi) + i^{-\kappa (\chi)} G(\chi) L(s,\overline{\chi})$, where $\overline{\chi}$ is the complex conjugate of $\chi$ and $\kappa (\chi) :=(1-\chi (-1))/2$. Then we prove that $f (s,\chi)$ satisfies Riemann's functional equation appearing in Hamburger's theorem if $\chi$ is even. In addition, we show that $f (\sigma,\chi) \ne 0$ all $\sigma \ge 1$. Moreover, we prove that $f(\sigma,\chi) \ne 0$ for all $1/2 \le \sigma < 1$ if and only if $L(\sigma,\chi) \ne 0$ for all $1/2 \le \sigma < 1$. When $\chi$ is real, all zeros of $f(s,\chi)$ with $\Re (s) >0$ are on the line $\sigma =1/2$ if and only if GRH for $L(s,\chi)$ is true. However, $f (s,\chi)$ has infinitely many zeros off the critical line $\sigma =1/2$ if $\chi$ is non-real.

Abstract:For any $\theta>\frac13$, we show that there are constants $c_1,c_2>0$ that depend only on $\theta$ for which the following property holds. If $\chi_1,\chi_2$ are two distinct primitive Dirichlet characters modulo $q$, and $T\ge c_1q^\theta$, then $L(s,\chi_1)$ and $L(s,\chi_2)$ do not have the same zeros in the region $$\big\{s=\sigma+it\in{\mathbb C}:0<\sigma<1,~T<t<T+c_2q^\theta\log T\big\}.$$ For cubefree moduli $q$, the same result holds for any $\theta>\frac14$.

Abstract:Text We compute the one-level density of zeros of order ℓ Dirichlet L-functions over function fields F q [ t ] for ℓ = 3 , 4 in the Kummer setting ( q ≡ 1 ( mod ℓ ) ) and for ℓ = 3 , 4 , 6 in the non-Kummer setting ( q ≢ 1 ( mod ℓ ) ). In each case, we obtain a main term predicted by Random Matrix Theory (RMT) and lower order terms not predicted by RMT. Abstract:Let $\mathcal{L}(s) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} a_n n^{-s}$ be an $L$-function in the Selberg class, and $q_{\mathcal{L}}$ its conductor. Let $\ell_0(\mathcal{L})$ be the constant term of the Laurent expansion of $\mathcal{L}'/\mathcal{L}$ at $s=1$. We show that for certain families $\mathcal{F}$ of $L$-functions in the Selberg class with polynomial Euler product: $\bullet$ If $\mathcal{L}\in\mathcal{F}$ has no zeros $\beta + i\gamma$ with $\beta > 1 - \delta(\log q_{\mathcal{L}})^{-1}$, $|\gamma| < (\log q_{\mathcal{L}})^{-1/2}$ for some absolute $\delta >0$, then $\Re(\ell_0(\mathcal{L})) \ll_{\mathcal{F}} \log q_{\mathcal{L}}$; $\bullet$ If $\Re(\ell_0(\mathcal{L})) \ll \log q_{\mathcal{L}}$ for all $\mathcal{L}\in \mathcal{F}$, then there is some absolute $\delta > 0$ such that $\mathcal{L}$ has no zeros $\beta + i\gamma$ with $\beta > 1 - \delta(\log q_{\mathcal{L}})^{-1}$, $|\gamma| < (1-\beta)^{1/2}(\log q_{\mathcal{L}})^{-1/2}$. Abstract:We express the contribution of certain maximal parabolic Eisenstein series to the spectral side of the Arthur--Selberg trace formula for GL$(n)$ in terms of zeroes of Rankin--Selberg $L$-functions, generalizing previous results for GL(2) and Hecke $L$-functions. As applications, we prove a lower bound for the sum of these zeroes, and a base change relation between the zeroes in the case $n=2$ for cyclic extensions of prime degree.

Abstract:We study the non-vanishing problem for the family of Hecke $L$-functions associated to primitive cubic characters defined over the Eisenstein quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\omega)$. We prove unconditionally that a positive proportion of Hecke $L$-functions associated to the cubic residue symbols $\chi_q$ with $q \in \mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ squarefree and $q \equiv 1 \pmod{9}$ do not vanish at the central point. Our proof goes through the method of first and second mollified moments. The principal new contribution of this paper is the asymptotic evaluation of the mollified second moment with power saving error term. No asymptotic formula for the mollified second moment of a cubic family was previously known (even over function fields). Our new approach makes crucial use of Patterson's evaluation of the Fourier coefficients of the cubic metaplectic theta function, Heath-Brown's cubic large sieve, and a Lindelöf-on-average upper bound for the second moment of cubic Dirichlet series that we establish. The significance of our result is that the (unitary) family considered does not satisfy a perfectly orthogonal large sieve bound. This is quite unlike other families of Dirichlet $L$-functions in the literature for which unconditional results are known: the symplectic family of quadratic characters and the unitary family of all Dirichlet characters $\chi \pmod{q}$. Consequently, our proof has fundamentally different features from the corresponding works of Soundararajan and of Iwaniec and Sarnak.

Abstract:Let p and q be two distinct odd primes. Let K be an imaginary quadratic field over which p and q are both split. Let Ψ be a Hecke character over K of infinity type ( k , j ) with 0 ≤ − j < k . Under certain technical hypotheses, we show that for a Zariski dense set of finite-order characters κ over K which factor through the -extension of K , the p -adic valuation of the algebraic part of the L -value is a constant independent of κ . In addition, when j = 0 and certain technical hypothesis holds, this constant is zero.

Abstract:We study non-vanishing of Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point under the unlikely assumption that there exists an exceptional Dirichlet character. In particular we prove that if $\psi$ is a real primitive character modulo $D \in \mathbb{N}$ with $L(1, \psi) \ll (\log D)^{-25-\varepsilon}$, then, for any prime $q \in [D^{300}, D^{O(1)}]$, one has $L(1/2, \chi) \neq 0$ for almost all Dirichlet characters $\chi \pmod{q}$.

Abstract:We combine the relative trace formula with analytic methods to obtain zero density estimate for $L$-functions in various families of automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL}(m)$. Applications include strong bounds for the average analytic rank of these $L$-functions at the central point and average equidistribution results for the imaginary parts of the zeros.

Abstract:Meher et al. [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 147 (2019)] have recently established that $L-$functions attached to certain cusp forms of half-integral weight have infinitely many zeros on the critical line. Kim [J. Numb. Th. 253 (2023)] obtained analogous results for $L-$functions attached to cusp forms twisted by an additive character $e\left(\frac{p}{q}n\right)$, $\frac{p}{q}\in\mathbb{Q}$. We extend the results of these authors by giving a lower bound for the number of such zeros. We start by developing a variant of a method of de la Val\'ee Poussin which seems to have interest as it avoids the evaluation of exponential sums. We finish the paper with an improvement of our first estimate by using Lekkerkerker's variant of the Hardy-Littlewood method.

The sixth moment of Dirichlet L-functions at the central point

Abstract:In 1970, Huxley obtained a sharp upper bound for the sixth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point, averaged over primitive characters $\chi$ modulo $q$ and all moduli $q \leq Q$. In 2007, as an application of their ``asymptotic large sieve'', Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan showed that when an additional short $t$-averaging is introduced into the problem, an asymptotic can be obtained. In this paper we show that this extraneous averaging can be removed, and we thus obtain an asymptotic for the original moment problem considered by Huxley. The main new difficulty in our work is the appearance of certain challenging ``unbalanced'' sums that arise as soon as the $t$-aspect averaging is removed.

Abstract:We prove an $\Omega$-result for the quadratic Dirichlet $L$-function $|L(1/2, \chi_P)|$ over irreducible polynomials $P$ associated with the hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ in the large genus limit. In particular, we showed that for any $\epsilon\in (0, 1/2)$, \[ \max_{\substack{P\in \mathcal{P}_{2g+1}}}|L(1/2, \chi_P)|\gg \exp\left(\left(\sqrt{\left(1/2-\epsilon\right)\ln q}+o(1)\right)\sqrt{\frac{g \ln_2 g}{\ln g}}\right), \] where $\mathcal{P}_{2g+1}$ is the set of all monic irreducible polynomial of degree $2g+1$. Abstract:We study a new orthogonal family of $L$-functions associated with holomorphic Hecke newforms of level $q$, averaged over $q \asymp Q$. To illustrate our methods, we prove a one level density result for this family with the support of the Fourier transform of the test function being extended to be inside $(-4, 4)$. The main techniques developed in this paper will be useful in developing further results for this family, including estimates for high moments, information on the vertical distribution of zeros, as well as critical line theorems.
