Abstract:We prove that every topological action of a countable group on a metrizable space can be realized as a bi-Lipschitz action with respect to some compatible metric. This extends a result due to U. Hamenstädt regarding finitely generated groups, and our proof is based upon her idea. This also gives a simple proof of a theorem due to Deroin, Kleptsyn and Navas regarding one-manifolds. We also establish an analogous result for closed subgroups of locally compact groups.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the smoothing of the action of countable groups on metrizable spaces. Specifically, the author proves that every topological action can be realized as a bi - Lipschitz action under some compatible metric. This extends Hamenstädt's result on finitely generated groups and provides a simple proof of a theorem about one - dimensional manifolds. ### Main Conclusion **Theorem 1.1**: If \(X\) is a metrizable space and \(\Gamma\) is a countable subgroup of \(\text{Homeo}(X)\), then there exists a metric \(\delta\) compatible with \(X\) such that \(\Gamma\leqslant\text{Lip}(X,\delta)\). ### Explanation - **Metrizable space**: A space that can be endowed with a metric so that its topological structure is compatible with the metric structure. - **Bi - Lipschitz action**: It means that the action preserves the Lipschitz property of the metric, that is, there exists a constant \(K\) such that for any \(x,y\in X\), \(\frac{1}{K}d(x,y)\leq d(\phi(x),\phi(y))\leq Kd(x,y)\). - **Countable group**: A group with a countable number of elements. ### Method The author uses Hamenstädt's averaging technique to achieve this result by constructing a new metric \(\delta\). The specific steps are as follows: 1. **Select an initial metric**: Select a bounded metric \(\hat{\delta}\) compatible with \(X\). 2. **Construct a new metric**: Define the new metric \(\delta\) as the weighted average of \(\hat{\delta}\) under \(\rho\)-translation: \[ \delta:=\sum_{g\in F_8}\exp(-s\|g\|)\cdot\hat{\delta}\circ\rho(g)^{-1} \] where \(s > \log 3\). 3. **Verify the properties of the new metric**: - **Convergence**: Prove that the above infinite series is convergent. - **Boundedness**: Prove that \(\delta\) is a bounded metric. - **Topological compatibility**: Prove that \(\delta\) is topologically compatible with \(X\). - **Bi - Lipschitz property**: Prove that the action of \(\rho(F_8)\) on \((X,\delta)\) is bi - Lipschitz. ### Application - **One - dimensional manifolds**: As a corollary, the paper recovers the theorem of Deroin, Kleptsyn and Navas, that is, every topological action of a countable subgroup on a connected one - dimensional manifold can be topologically conjugated to a bi - Lipschitz action. - **High - dimensional manifolds**: Further generalize to high - dimensional manifolds, and prove that every topological action of a countable subgroup on a compact connected \(n\)-manifold can be topologically conjugated to the homeomorphism group that preserves the equivalence class of the Oxtoby - Ulam measure. ### Conclusion By constructing a new metric, the paper successfully smoothes the topological action into a bi - Lipschitz action, thus solving the problem of the action of countable groups on metrizable spaces. This result not only extends the existing theory but also provides a new tool for studying dynamical systems under low regularity.
