Abstract:The single-scatter approximation is fundamental in many tomographic imaging problems including x-ray scatter imaging and optical scatter imaging for certain media. In all cases, noisy measurements are affected by both local scatter events and nonlocal attenuation. Prior works focus on reconstructing one of two images: scatter density or total attenuation. However, both images are media specific and useful for object identification. Nonlocal effects of the attenuation image on the data are summarized by the broken ray transform (BRT). While analytic inversion formulas exist, poor conditioning of the inverse problem is only exacerbated by noisy measurements and sampling errors. This has motivated interest in the related star transforms incorporating BRT measurements from multiple source-detector pairs. However, all analytic methods operate on the log of the data. For media comprising regions with no scatter a new approach is required. We are the first to present a joint estimation algorithm based on Poisson data models for a single-scatter measurement geometry. Monotonic reduction of the log-likelihood function is guaranteed for our iterative algorithm while alternating image updates. We also present a fast algorithm for computing the discrete BRT forward operator. Our generalized approach can incorporate both transmission and scatter measurements from multiple source-detector pairs. Transmission measurements resolve low-frequency ambiguity in the joint image estimation problem, while multiple scatter measurements resolve the attenuation image. The benefits of joint estimation, over single-image estimation, vary with problem scaling. Our results quantify these benefits and should inform design of future acquisition systems.

Abstract:We prove a uniqueness result for the broken ray transform acting on the sums of functions and 1-forms on surfaces in the presence of an external force and a reflecting obstacle. We assume that the considered twisted geodesic flows have nonpositive curvature. The broken rays are generated from the twisted geodesic flows by the law of reflection on the boundary of a suitably convex obstacle. Our work generalizes recent results for the broken geodesic ray transform on surfaces to more general families of curves including the magnetic flows and Gaussian thermostats.

Abstract:We consider the inverse problem of the broken ray transform (sometimes also referred to as the V-line transform). Explicit image reconstruction formulas are derived and tested numerically. The obtained formulas are generalizations of the filtered backprojection formula of the conventional Radon transform. The advantages of the broken ray transform include the possibility to reconstruct the absorption and the scattering coefficients of the medium simultaneously and the possibility to utilize scattered radiation which, in the case of the conventional X-ray tomography, is typically discarded.

Improved Quantum Supersampling for Quantum Ray Tracing.

Abstract:Ray tracing algorithm is a category of rendering algorithms that calculate pixel colors by simulating light rays in parallel. The quantum supersampling has achieved a quadratic speedup over classical Monte Carlo method, but its output image contains many detached abnormal noisy dots. In this paper, we improve quantum supersampling by replacing the QFT-based phase estimation in quantum supersampling with a robust quantum counting scheme. We do simulation experiments to show that the quantum ray tracing with improved quantum supersampling does perform better than classical path tracing algorithm as well as the original form of quantum supersampling.

Abstract:Reflection imaging results generally reveal large-scale continuous geological information, and it is difficult to identify small-scale geological bodies such as breakpoints, pinch points, small fault blocks, caves, and fractures, etc. Diffraction imaging is an important method to identify small-scale geological bodies and it has higher resolution than reflection imaging. In the common-offset domain, reflections are mostly expressed as smooth linear events, whereas diffractions are characterized by hyperbolic events. This paper proposes a diffraction extraction method based on double sparse transforms. The linear events can be sparsely expressed by the high-resolution linear Radon transform, and the curved events can be sparsely expressed by the Curvelet transform. A sparse inversion model is built and the alternating direction method is used to solve the inversion model. Simulation data and field data experimental results proved that the diffractions extraction method based on double sparse transforms can effectively improve the imaging quality of faults and other small-scale geological bodies.

Abstract:We derive new singular value decompositions and range characterizations for the X-ray transform on the Poincaré disk, a surjectivity result for the backprojection operator, as well as new functional settings and intertwining relations with appropriately defined differential operators. The approach mainly exploits analogous results recently obtained for the Euclidean disk, together with the projective equivalence between the two models.

Abstract:This article studies the inverse problem of recovering a vector field supported in $\mathbb{D}_R$, the disk of radius $R$ centered at the origin, through a set of generalized broken ray/V-line transforms, namely longitudinal and transverse V-line transforms. Geometrically, we work with broken lines that start from the boundary of a disk and break at a fixed angle after traveling a distance along the diameter. We derive two inversion algorithms to recover a vector field in $\mathbb{R}^2$ from the knowledge of its longitudinal and transverse V-line transforms over two different subsets of aforementioned broken lines in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Abstract:We define the star transform as a generalization of the broken ray transform introduced by us in previous work. The advantages of using the star transform include the possibility to reconstruct the absorption and the scattering coefficients of the medium separately and simultaneously (from the same data) and the possibility to utilize scattered radiation which, in the case of the conventional X-ray tomography, is discarded. In this paper, we derive the star transform from physical principles, discuss its mathematical properties and analyze numerical stability of inversion. In particular, it is shown that stable inversion of the star transform can be obtained only for configurations involving odd number of rays. Several computationally-efficient inversion algorithms are derived and tested numerically.

Fantastic Breaks: A Dataset of Paired 3D Scans of Real-World Broken Objects and Their Complete Counterparts

Abstract:Automated shape repair approaches currently lack access to datasets that describe real-world damaged geometry. We present Fantastic Breaks (and Where to Find Them: <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://terascale-all-sensing-research-studio.github.io/FantasticBreaks" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>), a dataset containing scanned, waterproofed, and cleaned 3D meshes for 150 broken objects, paired and geometrically aligned with complete counterparts. Fantastic Breaks contains class and material labels, proxy repair parts that join to broken meshes to generate complete meshes, and manually annotated fracture boundaries. Through a detailed analysis of fracture geometry, we reveal differences between Fantastic Breaks and synthetic fracture datasets generated using geometric and physics-based methods. We show experimental shape repair evaluation with Fantastic Breaks using multiple learning-based approaches pre-trained with synthetic datasets and re-trained with subset of Fantastic Breaks.

The twisted geodesic flow generalizes the usual geodesic flow, allowing to model richer dynamics.

Abstract:Abstract The area of surface reconstruction has seen substantial progress in the past two decades. The traditional problem addressed by surface reconstruction is to recover the digital representation of a physical shape that has been scanned, where the scanned data contain a wide variety of defects. While much of the earlier work has been focused on reconstructing a piece‐wise smooth representation of the original shape, recent work has taken on more specialized priors to address significantly challenging data imperfections, where the reconstruction can take on different representations—not necessarily the explicit geometry. We survey the field of surface reconstruction, and provide a categorization with respect to priors, data imperfections and reconstruction output. By considering a holistic view of surface reconstruction, we show a detailed characterization of the field, highlight similarities between diverse reconstruction techniques and provide directions for future work in surface reconstruction.

Abstract:We explain the main concepts centered around Sharafutdinov's ray transform, its kernel, and the extent to which it can be inverted. It is shown how the ray transform emerges naturally in any attempt to reconstruct optical and stress tensors within a photoelastic medium from measurements on the state of polarization of light beams passing through the strained medium. The problem of reconstruction of stress tensors is crucially related to the fact that the ray transform has a nontrivial kernel; the latter is described by a theorem for which we provide a new proof which is simpler and shorter as in Sharafutdinov's original work, as we limit our scope to tensors which are relevant to Photoelasticity. We explain how the kernel of the ray transform is related to the decomposition of tensor fields into longitudinal and transverse components. The merits of the ray transform as a tool for tensor reconstruction are studied by walking through an explicit example of reconstructing the $\sigma_{33}$-component of the stress tensor in a cylindrical photoelastic specimen. In order to make the paper self-contained we provide a derivation of the basic equations of Integrated Photoelasticity which describe how the presence of stress within a photoelastic medium influences the passage of polarized light through the material.

Abstract:The standard cube mapping technique implemented in graphics pipelines, while useful in many scenarios, has significant shortcomings for important application areas in interactive computer graphics, e.g., dynamic environment mapping, omnidirectional shadow maps, or planetary-scale terrain rendering. Many alternative mapping methods have been proposed over the years with the purpose of reducing area and/or angular distortions. In this paper, we give an overview of methods suitable for interactive applications and analyze their properties. Furthermore, we evaluate a set of additional transformation functions and identify a simple new method with favorable distortion properties.

Abstract:Abstract We consider the dynamics of light rays in triangle tilings where triangles are transparent and adjacent triangles have equal but opposite indices of refraction. We find that the behavior of a trajectory on a triangle tiling is described by an orientation‐reversing three‐interval exchange transformation on the circle, and that the behavior of all the trajectories on a given triangle tiling is described by a polygon exchange transformation. We observe that, for a particular choice of triangle tiling, certain trajectories appear to approach the Rauzy fractal, under rescaling.

Abstract:We develop the fundamentals of a new theory of convex geometry -- which we call "broken line convex geometry". This is a theory of convexity where the ambient space is the rational tropicalization of a cluster variety, as opposed to an ambient vector space. In this theory, line segments are replaced by broken line segments, and we adopt the notion of convexity in [CMN21]. We state and prove broken line convex geometry versions of many standard results from usual convex geometry.

Weighted Divergent Beam Ray Transform: Reconstruction, Unique continuation and Stability

Abstract:In this article, we establish that any symmetric $m$-tensor field can be recovered pointwise from partial data of the $k$-th weighted divergent ray transform for any $k \in \mathbb{Z}^{+} \cup\{0\}$. Using the unique continuation property of the fractional Laplacian, we further prove the unique continuation of the fractional divergent beam ray transform for both vector fields and symmetric 2-tensor fields. Additionally, we derive explicit reconstruction formulas and stability results for vector fields and symmetric 2-tensor fields in terms of fractional divergent beam ray transform data. Finally, we conclude by proving a unique continuation result for the divergent beam ray transform for functions.

Abstract:We study the mapping properties of the X-ray transform and its adjoint on spaces of conormal functions on Riemannian manifolds with strictly convex boundary. After desingularizing the double fibration, and expressing the X-ray transform and its adjoint using b-fibrations operations, we employ tools related to Melrose's Pushforward Theorem to describe the mapping properties of these operators on various classes of polyhomogeneous functions, with special focus to computing how leading order coefficients are transformed. The appendix explains that a naïve use of the Pushforward Theorem leads to a suboptimal result with non-sharp index sets. Our improved results are obtained by closely inspecting Mellin functions which arise in the process, showing that certain coefficients vanish. This recovers some sharp results known by other methods. A number of consequences for the mapping properties of the X-ray transform and its normal operator(s) follow.

Abstract:A recently developed new approach, called ``Empirical Wavelet Transform'', aims to build 1D adaptive wavelet frames accordingly to the analyzed signal. In this paper, we present several extensions of this approach to 2D signals (images). We revisit some well-known transforms (tensor wavelets, Littlewood-Paley wavelets, ridgelets and curvelets) and show that it is possible to build their empirical counterpart. We prove that such constructions lead to different adaptive frames which show some promising properties for image analysis and processing.

Transport in rough self-affine fractures

Abstract:Transport properties of three-dimensional self-affine rough fractures are studied by means of an effective-medium analysis and numerical simulations using the Lattice-Boltzmann method. The numerical results show that the effective-medium approximation predicts the right scaling behavior of the permeability and of the velocity fluctuations, in terms of the aperture of the fracture, the roughness exponent and the characteristic length of the fracture surfaces, in the limit of small separation between surfaces. The permeability of the fractures is also investigated as a function of the normal and lateral relative displacements between surfaces, and is shown that it can be bounded by the permeability of two-dimensional fractures. The development of channel-like structures in the velocity field is also numerically investigated for different relative displacements between surfaces. Finally, the dispersion of tracer particles in the velocity field of the fractures is investigated by analytic and numerical methods. The asymptotic dominant role of the geometric dispersion, due to velocity fluctuations and their spatial correlations, is shown in the limit of very small separation between fracture surfaces.

Abstract:Physics based solid fracture simulation techniques have great applications in the domains such as Virtual Reality, Military Affairs training, special effect manufacture in films & television, and game design, etc. However, current solid fracture simulation algorithms have the defects of either too slow or unrealistic. To overcome this shortcoming, in this paper we present a novel algorithm to real-time simulate the fracture process of solid with quite realism. To accelerate the fracture process, we hire random Voronoi Tessallation which can significantly decrease the number of crack meshes. To make the fracture process more realistic, we adopt a Physics based method called symmetric Galerkin BEM(Boundary Element Method) to stress analysis, and thus generate more detailed fracture results. We also devise a efficient crack propagation algorithm to simulate the fracture process. Experiments result show that our solid fracture algorithm can realistic simulate various solid fracture processes in real time.
