Abstract:The attainment of accurate numerical solutions of ill-conditioned linear algebraic problems involving totally positive matrices has been gathering considerable attention among researchers over the last years. In parallel, the interest of $q$-calculus has been steadily growing in the literature. In this work the $q$-analogue of the Abel polynomial basis is studied. The total positivity of the matrix of change of basis between monomial and $q$-Abel bases is characterized, providing its bidiagonal factorization. Moreover, well-known high relative accuracy results of Vandermonde matrices corresponding to increasing positive nodes are extended to the decreasing negative case. This further allows to solve with high relative accuracy several algebraic problems concerning collocation, Wronskian and Gramian matrices of $q$-Abel polynomials. Finally, a series of numerical tests support the presented theoretical results and illustrate the goodness of the method where standard approaches fail to deliver accurate solutions.
Numerical Analysis
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on two aspects: 1. **High - precision solutions to ill - conditioned linear algebra problems in numerical linear algebra**: - The paper focuses on how to achieve numerical solutions with high relative accuracy (HRA) for ill - conditioned linear algebra problems involving totally positive matrices in the floating - point arithmetic environment. Specifically, the authors study how to improve the precision of numerical calculations through bidiagonal factorization, especially when dealing with collocation matrices, Wronskian matrices, and Gramian matrices. 2. **Total positivity of the q - Abel polynomial basis and its applications**: - The authors study the total positivity of the q - Abel polynomial basis. By analyzing the properties of the basis transformation matrix between the q - Abel polynomial basis and the monomial basis, they give the bidiagonal factorization of this basis transformation matrix and prove that under specific conditions (such as the sign of the parameter \(\alpha\)), these basis transformation matrices are strictly totally positive (STP). In addition, the paper also explores how to use these properties to solve various algebraic problems related to the q - Abel polynomial basis, such as eigenvalue calculation, singular value calculation, matrix inversion, and the solution of linear systems. ### Specific problem analysis - **Problem background**: - Totally positive matrices have important applications in numerical linear algebra, especially in interpolation and approximation problems. However, when it comes to ill - conditioned problems, standard numerical methods often fail to provide high - precision results. Therefore, it is very important to study how to achieve high - precision numerical solutions in these cases. - **Research methods**: - The authors use the method of bidiagonal factorization to analyze the properties of the basis transformation matrix and use Neville elimination to verify the strict total positivity of the matrix. In addition, they also use the concept of q - calculus to study the properties of the q - Abel polynomial basis. - **Main contributions**: - Propose the bidiagonal factorization method of the q - Abel polynomial basis and prove that under specific conditions, these basis transformation matrices are strictly totally positive. - Through these properties, achieve high - precision numerical calculations when dealing with collocation matrices, Wronskian matrices, and Gramian matrices. - Provide a series of numerical experiments to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. ### Conclusion The paper provides new methods and tools for solving ill - conditioned linear algebra problems through in - depth research on the total positivity of the q - Abel polynomial basis and its bidiagonal decomposition. These methods not only improve the precision of numerical calculations but also show good performance in practical applications.
