Abstract:The Goormaghtigh conjecture states that the only two numbers which have two non-trivial representations as repunits are $31$ and $8191$. We call such a prime number a {\it Goormaghtigh prime}. We show that there are no other Goormaghtigh primes less than $10^{700}$.

Abstract:We pose 100 new conjectures on representations involving primes or related things, which might interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Below are five typical examples: (i) For any positive integer n, there exists $k\in \{0,\ldots ,n\}$ such that $n+k$ and $n+k^2$ are both prime. (ii) Each integer $n>1$ can be written as $x+y$ with $x,y\in \{1,2,3,\ldots \}$ such that $x+ny$ and $x^2+ny^2$ are both prime. (iii) For any rational number $r>0$, there are distinct primes $q_1,\ldots ,q_k$ with $r=\sum _{j=1}^k1/(q_j-1)$. (iv) Every $n=4,5,\ldots $ can be written as $p+q$, where p is a prime with $p-1$ and $p+1$ both practical, and q is either prime or practical. (v) Any positive rational number can be written as m/n, where m and n are positive integers with $p_m+p_n$ a square (or $\pi (m)\pi (n)$ a positive square), $p_k$ is the kth prime and $\pi (x)$ is the prime-counting function.
Empirical verification of a new generalisation of Goldbach's conjecture up to $10^{12}$ (or $10^{13}$) for all coefficients $\leq 40$

Abstract:A new generalisation of Goldbach's conjecture (GGC) - also generalising that of Lemoine - is tested, introduced by the first author. It states that for every pair of positive integers $m_1, m_2$, every sufficiently large integer $n$ satisfying certain simple criteria can be expressed as $n=m_1p+m_2q$ for some primes $p$ and $q$. GGC is checked up to $10^{12}d$ for all (up to $10^{13}d$ for some) pairs of coefficients $m_1, m_2$, where $d=\gcd{(m_1, m_2)}$ and $m_1/d, m_2/d \leq 40$. The largest counterexamples found that cannot be obtained in this form are presented. Their relatively small sizes support the plausibility of GGC. Lemoine's conjecture is verified up to a new record of $10^{13}$. Four naturally arising verifying algorithms are described and their running times compared for every $m_1\leq m_2\leq 40$ relatively prime. These seek to find either the $p$- or the $q$-minimal $(m_1, m_2)$-partitions of all numbers tested, by either descending or ascending search for the prime to be maximised or minimised, respectively, in the partitions. For all $m_1, m_2$ descending searches were faster than ascending ones. A heuristic explanation is provided. The relative speed of ascending [descending] searches for the $p$- and for the $q$-minimal partitions, respectively, varied by $m_1, m_2$. Using the average of $p^*_{m_1, m_2}(n)$ - the minimal $p$ in all $(m_1, m_2)$-partitions of $n$ - up to a sufficiently large threshold, two functions of $m_1, m_2$ are introduced, which may help predict these rankings. Our predictions correspond well with actual rankings. These could be further improved by developing approximations to $p^*_{m_1, m_2}(n)$. Numerical data are presented, including average and maximum values of $p^*_{m_1, m_2}(n)$ up to $10^9$. An extension of GGC is proposed, generalising the Twin prime conjecture and the assertion that there are infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

Abstract:In 1845, Bertrand conjectured that twice any prime strictly exceeds the next prime. Tchebichef proved Bertrand's postulate in 1850. In 1934, Ishikawa proved a stronger result: the sum of any two consecutive primes strictly exceeds the next prime, except for the only equality $2+3=5$. This observation is a special case of a more general result, perhaps not previously noticed: if $p_n$ denotes the $n$th prime, $n=1, 2, \ldots$, with $p_1=2, p_2=3, \ldots$, and if $c_1, \ldots, c_g$ are nonnegative integers (not necessarily distinct), and $d_1, \ldots, d_h$ are positive integers (not necessarily distinct), and $g>h\ge 1$, then there exists a positive integer $N$ such that $p_{n-c_1}+p_{n-c_2}+\cdots +p_{n-c_g}>p_{n+d_1}+\cdots +p_{n+d_h}$ for all $n\ge N$. We prove this result using only the prime number theorem. For any instance of this result, we sketch a way to find the least possible $N$. We give some numerical results and unanswered questions.

We construct a set of primes $\mathbb{P}$ defined by an expanding system of admissible congruences such that almost all primes are not in $\mathbb{P}$ and still, the ternary Goldbach conjecture holds true with primes restricted to $\mathbb{P}$.

Abstract:We state a general purpose algorithm for quickly finding primes in evenly divided sub-intervals. Legendre's conjecture claims that for every positive integer $n$, there exists a prime between $n^2$ and $(n+1)^2$. Oppermann's conjecture subsumes Legendre's conjecture by claiming there are primes between $n^2$ and $n(n+1)$ and also between $n(n+1)$ and $(n+1)^2$. Using Cramér's conjecture as the basis for a heuristic run-time analysis, we show that our algorithm can verify Oppermann's conjecture, and hence also Legendre's conjecture, for all $n\le N$ in time $O( N \log N \log \log N)$ and space $N^{O(1/\log \log N)}$. We implemented a parallel version of our algorithm and improved the empirical verification of Oppermann's conjecture from the previous $N = 2\cdot 10^{9}$ up to $N = 3.33\cdot 10^{13}$, so we were finding $27$ digit primes. The computation ran for about half a year on four Intel Xeon Phi $7210$ processors using a total of $256$ cores.

Abstract:Suppose that $n$ is $0$ or $4$ modulo $6$. We show that there are infinitely many primes of the form $p^2 + nq^2$ with both $p$ and $q$ prime, and obtain an asymptotic for their number. In particular, when $n = 4$ we verify the `Gaussian primes conjecture' of Friedlander and Iwaniec. We study the problem using the method of Type I/II sums in the number field $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. The main innovation is in the treatment of the Type II sums, where we make heavy use of two recent developments in the theory of Gowers norms in additive combinatorics: quantitative versions of so-called concatenation theorems, due to Kuca and to Kuca--Kravitz-Leng, and the quasipolynomial inverse theorem of Leng, Sah and the second author.

Abstract:Zhang has shown there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing two primes. It appears that the current techniques cannot prove that there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing three primes, even if strong conjectures such as the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture are assumed. We show that there are infinitely many intervals of length at most $10^8$ which contain two primes and a number with at most 31 prime factors.

Abstract:The ternary Goldbach conjecture, or three-primes problem, states that every odd number $n$ greater than $5$ can be written as the sum of three primes. The conjecture, posed in 1742, remained unsolved until now, in spite of great progress in the twentieth century. In 2013 -- following a line of research pioneered and developed by Hardy, Littlewood and Vinogradov, among others -- the author proved the conjecture. In this, as in many other additive problems, what is at issue is really the proper usage of the limited information we possess on the distribution of prime numbers. The problem serves as a test and whetting-stone for techniques in analysis and number theory -- and also as an incentive to think about the relations between existing techniques with greater clarity. We will go over the main ideas of the proof. The basic approach is based on the circle method, the large sieve and exponential sums. For the purposes of this overview, we will not need to work with explicit constants; however, we will discuss what makes certain strategies and procedures not just effective, but efficient, in the sense of leading to good constants. Still, our focus will be on qualitative improvements.

Abstract:We show that there exists some $\delta > 0$ such that, for any set of integers $B$ with $B\cap[1,Y]\gg Y^{1-\delta}$ for all $Y \gg 1$, there are infinitely many primes of the form $a^2+b^2$ with $b\in B$. We prove a quasi-explicit formula for the number of primes of the form $a^2+b^2 \leq X$ with $b \in B$ for any $|B|=X^{1/2-\delta}$ with $\delta < 1/10$ and $B \subseteq [\eta X^{1/2},(1-\eta)X^{1/2}] \cap \mathbb{Z}$, in terms of zeros of Hecke $L$-functions on $\mathbb{Q}(i)$. We obtain the expected asymptotic formula for the number of such primes provided that the set $B$ does not have a large subset which consists of multiples of a fixed large integer. In particular, we get an asymptotic formula if $B$ is a sparse subset of primes. For an arbitrary $B$ we obtain a lower bound for the number of primes with a weaker range for $\delta$, by bounding the contribution from potential exceptional characters.

Abstract:A friend who teaches middle-school math recently asked me whether it was a coincidence that every positive integer and its fifth power seem to have the same last (i.e., rightmost) decimal digit. I said that it was definitely not a coincidence and that it followed from a theorem in number theory called Euler's theorem, which I explained briefly. Right after this, however, I recalled that since the theorem applies only to numbers that are relatively prime to the modulus (which is 10 in this case, since dividing any positive integer by 10 and taking the remainder gives us that integer's last digit), the theorem applies only to numbers ending in 1, 3, 7, or 9, and cannot be applied to numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, or 8, since they are not relatively prime to 10. Nonetheless, we can easily check that in this case, his observation works for all these numbers as well: <span class="InlineEquation">$2^5=32$</span>

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to find all the prime numbers p for which whenever we add to p an odd square less than p we obtain a number which has at most two different prime factors. We solve completely the cases $p\equiv 1,3,5 \pmod 8$. The idea of the proof in these cases is to find the class number for the quadratic imaginary field $\mathbb{Q}(i\sqrt p)$. Since we know all these quadratic imaginary fields with class number 1, 2 or 4, we are able to solve these cases. The most interesting case is $p\equiv 7 \pmod 8$. We prove in this case that the Ono invariant of the field equals the class number. S. Louboutin succeeded to find all these fields, with one possible exception. Assuming a Restricted Riemann Hypothesis, the list of Louboutin is complete.

Abstract:We construct several new families of non-congruent numbers with arbitrarily many prime factors congruent to 3 modulo 8. Our results generalize the work of Reinholz, Spearman and Yang [14]. Our methods are based on Monsky's formula on the 2-Selmer rank of the congruent elliptic curve and the recent results by Tian, Yuan and Zhang on the congruent number problem.

Abstract:Recent work by Craig, van Ittersum, and Ono constructs explicit expressions in the partition functions of MacMahon that detect the prime numbers. Furthermore, they define generalizations, the MacMahonesque functions, and prove there are infinitely many such expressions in these functions. Here, we show how to modify and adapt their construction to detect cubes of primes as well as primes in arithmetic progressions.
