Abstract:The paper addresses a controller design approach for nonlinear systems based on a staged-transformation technique. A new nonlinear state transformation is proposed to transform a complex single-input nonlinear system into a simple intermediate nonlinear model, a nonlinear state feedback is then introduced to transform the intermediate nonlinear model into a linear controllable canonical form. The optimal nonlinear controller to the primitive nonlinear system is derived via a staged-design method. Furthermore, an optimal tracking control law for nonlinear systems is developed. The simulation result of an inverted pendulum example shows that this approach is quite effective, and the nonlinear controller is robust to parameter perturbations.

Abstract:A new framework to design parameter estimators for nonlinearly parameterized systems is proposed in this paper. The key step is the construction of a monotone function, which explicitly depends on some of the estimator tuning parameters. Monotonicity-or the related property of convexity-have already been explored by several authors with monotonicity (or convexity) being a priori assumptions that are, usually, valid only on some region of state space. In our approach monotonicity is enforced by the designer, effectively becoming a synthesis tool. In order to dispose of degrees of freedom to render the function monotone we depart from standard (gradient or least-squares) estimators and adopt instead the recently introduced immersion and invariance approach for adaptation.

Abstract:Nonlinear process identification for control is studied. In identification test, the process is only tested (excited) along its operating-trajectory that includes various working points and transition periods. In model identification, a linear parameter varying (LPV) model is used. First linear models are identified using data sets at various working-points exclusive transition data; then the LPV model is identified by interpolating the linear models using total data. Sufficient conditions for a unique solution in parameter estimation will be given. Simulation study will be used to verify the effectiveness of the method. The identified model is suitable for model predictive control (MPC).

Abstract:The identification of dynamic models with nonlinear gains is studied. The nonlinear gain is modelled as a function of so-called working-point variable (WPY). The working-point variable is introduced to represent the changes of process operation range. Parameter estimation is solved for the models. A relaxation iteration scheme is used to estimate the initial high order model and then a model reduction is used to obtain the reduced model. The convergence and consistency of the method are studied. Simulation study will he used to illustrate the estimation method.

Abstract:A method of nonlinear model predictive control based on an identified LPV model is proposed. In process identification, a linear parameter varying (LPV) model approach is used. First, typical working-points are selected and linear models are identified using data sets at various working-points; then the LPV model is identified by interpolating the linear models using total data that include transition test data. Further, nonlinear model predictive control based on the LPV model is proposed. The control action is computed via a multistep linearization method of nonlinear optimization problem. The method uses low cost tests and can reach higher control performance than linear MPC. Simulation studies are used to verify the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:To deal with the identification of nonlinear systems with slowly and irregularly sampled output, a linear parameter varying (LPV) model is used and it consists of weighted local models, which is also called multi-model structure. In this work, the output error (OE) method is utilized to identify the local models and the global LPV model is represented by the combination of the local models weighted by cubic spline function and asymmetric Gaussian function. Gauss-Newton method and stochastic gradient method are respectively applied to estimate the parameters of the local OE models and weighting functions. Meanwhile, the problem of initialization and stability of the numerical search algorithm are also considered and handled in this paper. To identify a more accurate LPV model, a multi-iterative method is developed. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated by an industry case.

Abstract:This paper presents a method of closed-loop identification for multivariable systems without external excitation. The method is specially designed for model predictive control (MPC) systems. Without using external excitation (test signals), the method ensures the informativity of the closed-loop data and, at the same time, improve the control performance during the test period. The purpose of the study is to reduce the cost of identification test. The basic idea is to switch the input weighting matrix in the MPC controller which leads to the informativity of the data-set. A preliminary test is carried out in order to find a new input weighting matrix which improve the control performance; then a switching scheme is developed based on the two weighting matrixes. Traditional simulation based model validation no longer works in closed-loop identification without excitation, and model error bounds on the frequency responses can be used instead. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by a simulation study.

Abstract:Nonlinear process identification is studied. In model identification, a linear parameter varying (LPV) model is used and it consists of weighted local linear models. In this work, predetermined weighting functions are used and the LPV model identification becomes a linear identification problem with multiple weighted input data sets. So simplicity is its strength. The developed method is especially suitable for batch processes for which only transition tests are feasible and no working point tests are permitted. It is also suitable for continuous nonlinear process identification. Identifiability and stability of the LPV model are discussed. Simulation studies will be used to verify the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:The stabilisation problem of non-linear systems with multi-uncontrollable modes on the imaginary axes is studied. The relation between the centre manifold and the feedback law is given. By choosing the first coordinate function of the centre manifold, a state feedback law to stabilise the dynamics of the centre manifold is acquired. It can stabilise the full order system. This method is applied to stabilise non-linear systems with double Hopf bifurcation. The simulation shows the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is to propose an alternative procedure to carry out one of the key steps of immersion and invariance stabilising controller design. Namely, the one that ensures attractivity of the manifold whose internal dynamics contains a copy of the desired system behaviour. Towards this end we invoke contraction theory principles and ensure the attractivity of the manifold rendering it horizontally contractive. The main advantage of adopting this alternative approach is to make more systematic the last step of the design with more explicit degrees of freedom to accomplish the task. The classical case of systems in feedback form is used to illustrate the proposed controller design.

Abstract:In view of the difficulty of modeling for complex nonlinear system, a novel one step iterative identification algorithm for the linear part of the system is proposed in this paper, based on Taylor series expansion. The effect of sample on the precision of the model was analyzed by utilizing rigorous mathematical theory, and neuro-fuzzy model was used to identify the Taylor remainder and noise. To verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, it was applied to a classical benchmark batch process. The algorithm proposed here has a good performance and provides a new way for the modeling of complex nonlinear system.

Abstract:The identification of nonlinear system was the main topics in the current international identification fields. In this paper, an identification approach of a kind of nonlinear system is put forward. First, the idea of the method employed a system model composed with classical models so as to transform the system structure identification problem into a combinational problem. Second, a bacterial chemotaxis optimization (BCO) approach is adopted to implement the identification on the system structure and parameters. Finally, to illustrate the rationality and effectiveness of the presented method, simulation examples are included.

Abstract:In this paper, nonlinear system is substituted with T-S fuzzy model. Since the conclusion part is linear model, the Takagi-Sugeo fuzzy model can be treated as a linear time-varying system. We accomplish the model structure identification by using clustering algorithm on-line. Fuzzy basis functions are used to approach the timevarying coefficients and RLS is used to identify the parameter of conclusion part, so accomplishing the identification invariable coefficients on-line. At last, generalized predictive control is designed for the original nonlinear system. The effectiveness of the presented method is demonstrated by the simulation results.

Abstract:A numerical solution method is proposed to verify quadratic Lyapunov function candidate for polynomial nonlinear systems.In the method,the coefficients of a polynomial are decomposed to a matrix with free variables,and positivity validation is checked by solving derived matrix inequalities.For local stability analysis,multi-Lyapunov-functions are considered to approximate the domain of attraction.Each Lyapunov function is optimized with maximum radius at every specified direction.Based on the work of stability analysis,a local stabilizing control scheme with guaranteed convergence rate is addressed to expend the domain of attraction.

Abstract:In this paper a generally applicable approach for forming a continuous explicit piecewise-linear model by separatedly fitting local observations is proposed. This is achieved by connecting local models with suitable hyperplanes. Based on this approach two practical algorithms for system identification are designed, which can produce a continuous piecewise-linear model capable of fitting observations to any accuracy predefined. It is shown by numerical simulation that the models obtained can not only fit observations well, but also possess good forecasting performance.

Abstract:Advanced model-based control strategies like Model Predictive Control can offer superior control of key process variables for multiple-input multiple-output systems. The quality of the system model is critical to controller performance and should adequately describe the process dynamics across its operating range while remaining amenable to fast optimization. Mechanistic models might be difficult to construct or might evaluate too slowly for fast-sampling purposes, while System Identification methods that yield linear models might only offer effective control within a limited range. This work thus articulates an integrated System Identification procedure for deriving black-box nonlinear continuous-time multiple-input multiple-output system models for Nonlinear Model Predictive Control. In this piece, seven candidate models were trained on data sets generated from two different methods and integrated into a Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller for a highly nonlinear Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor system. This procedure successfully identified system models that enabled effective control in both servo and regulator problems across wider operating ranges, given that the data set is sufficiently uniform across the operating range. These results were subsequently built upon in a follow-up work. This demonstration of how such system models could be identified for Nonlinear Model Predictive Control without prior knowledge of system dynamics opens further possibilities for direct data-driven methodologies for model-based control which, in the face of process uncertainties or modeling limitations, allow rapid and stable control over wider operating ranges.
Identification of Analytic Nonlinear Dynamical Systems with Non-asymptotic Guarantees

Abstract:This paper focuses on the system identification of an important class of nonlinear systems: linearly parameterized nonlinear systems, which enjoys wide applications in robotics and other mechanical systems. We consider two system identification methods: least-squares estimation (LSE), which is a point estimation method; and set-membership estimation (SME), which estimates an uncertainty set that contains the true parameters. We provide non-asymptotic convergence rates for LSE and SME under i.i.d. control inputs and control policies with i.i.d. random perturbations, both of which are considered as non-active-exploration inputs. Compared with the counter-example based on piecewise-affine systems in the literature, the success of non-active exploration in our setting relies on a key assumption on the system dynamics: we require the system functions to be real-analytic. Our results, together with the piecewise-affine counter-example, reveal the importance of differentiability in nonlinear system identification through non-active exploration. Lastly, we numerically compare our theoretical bounds with the empirical performance of LSE and SME on a pendulum example and a quadrotor example.

Abstract:If the linearization of a nonlinear system is carried out simply by using the Taylor series,the re sult may be incorrect.It was pointed out that the linearization must be carried out simultaneously during the derivation of the system equations.An electromagnetic levitation system was used as an example.It was shown that during the establishment of the Lagrange equations the relevant partial derivatives must be taken as constant values at the equilibrium point.A Simulink simulation method for nonlinear systems was also proposed.And the nonlinear simulation under small deviation was then used to verify the linearization process by comparison with the simulation results of the linearized system.It shows that the method is clear in physical meanings,simple,and is helpful for establishment of a correct system model.

Abstract:This paper considers the stabilization problem of nonlinear systems with center manifold (center systems). A new method based on (system) immersion and (manifold) invariance (I&I) is introduced to stabilize the center systems. One of the key steps is to define a target dynamics whose order should be strictly smaller than that of the system to be controlled. For the center systems, we prove that the order of the target dynamics can be equal to that of the corresponding reduced dynamics on their center manifolds. Constructing solution is given for the target dynamics of the quadratic center system with a transcritical or a Hopf control bifurcation. Illustrating examples with simulations are respectively presented to validate the proposed stabilization scheme.

Abstract:Membership function identification is the basis for solving the fuzzy control problems. In order to complete the fuzzification process and reflect the dynamic quality of the nonlinear systems accurately, this paper constructs a kernel function-based nonlinear system by introducing the multi-model control strategy, and it has a good performance in fitting nonlinear systems. Then we focus on the parameter estimation problem of the nonlinear systems based on the kernel functions. To overcome the difficulty due to the highly nonlinear relations between the parameters and the model output, we transform the original optimization problem into a quadratic and a nonlinear optimization problems by decomposing the complex identification model into two sub-models. Based on the hierarchical identification principle and the multi-innovation theory, two recursive identification algorithms are proposed for the nonlinear systems. Considering the difficulty to determine the step sizes, we derive the optimal step sizes by the one-dimensional search method. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms are tested by a numerical example. The simulation results show that the proposed parameter identification methods can identify the nonlinear systems effectively.
