Abstract:The electron spin polarization on half-metallic double-perovskites is usually conditioned to the ordered rock-salt arrangement of the transition-metal ions along the lattice. In this work, we investigate a polycrystalline sample of the Ca1.5La0.5MnRuO6 compound by employing x-ray powder diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn-L2,3 and Ru-M2,3 edges, magnetometry, electrical transport and first principles calculations in order to show that this is a fully disordered material exhibiting near room temperature ferrimagnetism and half-metallic conductivity, with significant intergrain tunneling magnetoresistance. These unprecedented results are compared to those of archetypical ordered double-perovskites, and discussed in terms of the Mn and Ru valences and their orbital hybridization.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Aims to Solve The paper aims to address the issue of achieving near-room-temperature ferromagnetism and half-metallicity (HM) in double-perovskite (DP) materials. Specifically, the researchers aim to develop a completely disordered material that still exhibits near-room-temperature ferromagnetism and half-metallicity. ### Background and Challenges 1. **Problems with Ordered Double-Perovskite Materials**: - Traditional high-temperature double-perovskite materials, when synthesized through conventional methods, usually exhibit some anti-site disorder (ASD), where the positions of transition metal ions in the lattice are exchanged. - This disorder disrupts long-range magnetic order and suppresses 100% spin polarization, thereby affecting the spin polarization of charge carriers. - Therefore, producing completely ordered double-perovskite materials requires expensive and time-consuming methods. 2. **Known Exceptions**: - The A2MnRuO6 system can maintain long-range magnetic order even in the presence of severe anti-site disorder because the Mn-O-Ru interaction leads to ferromagnetism (FIM), and the Mn-O-Mn coupling induced by ASD can be ferromagnetic, depending on the oxidation state of Mn. - However, experimental observations indicate that this material tends to form a Mn4+/Ru4+ configuration, lacking a clear mixed-valence state, which is not conducive to achieving half-metallicity. 3. **Innovation of Ca1.5La0.5MnRuO6**: - By partially substituting Ca2+ with La3+, electron doping can be introduced, achieving the desired mixed-valence state among the transition metal ions. - The similar ionic radii of La3+ and Ca2+ can maintain the octahedral rotation of the orthorhombic Pnma structure, preventing C-type antiferromagnetic order. - Unlike Sr2MnRuO6, La3+ doping does not lead to the stabilization of a tetragonal structure, thereby avoiding Jahn-Teller distortion and non-metallic conductivity. ### Objectives 1. **Achieving Near-Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism and Half-Metallicity**: - By developing the Ca1.5La0.5MnRuO6 (CLMRO) compound, the researchers aim to achieve near-room-temperature ferromagnetism and half-metallicity in a completely disordered material. - This goal will be verified through various experimental techniques (such as X-ray powder diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism, magnetic measurements, and electrical transport measurements) and first-principles calculations. 2. **Understanding the Mechanism**: - Investigate the orbital hybridization mechanism between Mn and Ru ions to explain why CLMRO can maintain ferromagnetism and half-metallicity in a disordered state. - Compare the performance of CLMRO with typical ordered double-perovskite materials to analyze its unique properties. ### Conclusion Through the above research, the paper demonstrates that Ca1.5La0.5MnRuO6 can exhibit near-room-temperature ferromagnetism and half-metallicity in a completely disordered state, providing new ideas and methods for developing novel functional materials.
