Abstract:In this work, we show that the edge dynamics of the Laughlin state in the weakly nonlinear regime is governed by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Our starting point is the Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau theory in the lower half-plane, where the effective edge dynamics are encoded in anomaly-compatible boundary conditions. The saddle point bulk dynamics and the corresponding boundary conditions of this action can be reformulated as two-dimensional compressible fluid dynamic equations, subject to a quantum Hall constraint that links the superfluid vorticity to its density fluctuations. The boundary conditions in this hydrodynamic framework consist of no-penetration and no-stress conditions. We then apply the method of multiple scales to this hydrodynamic system and derive the KdV equation for the edge dynamics in the weakly nonlinear regime. By employing the Hamiltonian framework for the KdV equation, we show that we can recover the chiral Luttinger liquid theory in the linearized regime and provide a pathway for canonically quantizing the edge dynamics in the weakly non-linear limit.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to derive the Korteweg - de Vries (KdV) equation from the Chern - Simons - Ginzburg - Landau (CSGL) theory through the multiscale method in the weak nonlinear dynamics of the edge region of the Laughlin state. Specifically, the objectives of the paper are: 1. **Starting from the CSGL theory**: Based on the CSGL theory, the paper describes the edge dynamics of the Laughlin state in a two - dimensional electron gas system under a strong magnetic field. The CSGL theory is a theoretical framework for describing the coupling between charged boson condensates and statistical Chern - Simons gauge fields. 2. **Deriving the KdV equation**: By introducing the multiscale method, the author conducts a weak nonlinear analysis of the hydrodynamic equations in the CSGL theory and finally derives the KdV equation that describes the edge dynamics of the Laughlin state. The KdV equation is a nonlinear partial differential equation, which is often used to describe the propagation of shallow water waves, but in this paper it is applied to the edge dynamics of the quantum Hall effect. 3. **Verifying the linearized theory**: Through the Hamiltonian structure of the KdV equation, the paper shows how to recover the chiral Luttinger liquid theory in the linearized limit and provides a method for canonically quantizing the edge dynamics in the weak nonlinear limit. 4. **Interpreting experimental phenomena**: The paper also discusses the potential experimental observation methods of these nonlinear behaviors, especially how to experimentally detect these nonlinear effects, such as the dissipation scale and shock wave phenomena at the quantum Hall edge. ### Specific problems and solutions - **Problem 1: How to describe the weak nonlinear dynamics of the Laughlin state edge?** - **Solution**: Through the multiscale method, convert the hydrodynamic equations in the CSGL theory into the KdV equation, thereby describing the weak nonlinear behavior of the edge density fluctuations. - **Problem 2: How to verify the chiral Luttinger liquid theory?** - **Solution**: Utilize the Hamiltonian structure of the KdV equation to prove that the chiral Luttinger liquid theory can be recovered in the weak nonlinear limit and provide a path for canonical quantization. - **Problem 3: How to interpret the nonlinear effects observed in experiments?** - **Solution**: Through theoretical analysis, predict the possible nonlinear behaviors at the quantum Hall edge and propose possible experimental observation methods, such as detecting these effects through tunneling experiments and noise measurements. ### Main conclusions The main conclusion of the paper is that in the edge region of the Laughlin state, the weak nonlinear dynamics can be described by the KdV equation. This result not only verifies the chiral Luttinger liquid theory but also provides a theoretical basis for further research on the nonlinear behaviors of the quantum Hall system. In addition, the paper also provides guidance for experimentally observing these nonlinear effects, which is helpful for in - depth understanding of the physical mechanism of the quantum Hall effect.
