Abstract:We obtain Gabor frame characterisations of modulation spaces defined via a class of translation-modulation invariant Banach spaces of distributions that was recently introduced in $[10]$. We show that these spaces admit an atomic decomposition through Gabor expansions and that they are characterised by summability properties of their Gabor coefficients. Furthermore, we construct a large space of admissible windows. This generalises several fundamental results for the classical modulation spaces $ M^{p,q}_{w}$. Due to the absence of solidity assumptions on the Banach spaces defining these modulation spaces, the methods used for the spaces $M^{p,q}_{w}$ (or, more generally, in coorbit space theory) fail in our setting and we develop here a new approach based on the twisted convolution.

Abstract:We provide the foundations of a Hilbert space theory for the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) where the flat tori \begin{equation*} \mathbb{T}_{N}^2=\mathbb{R}^2/(\mathbb{Z}\times N\mathbb{Z})=[0,1]\times \lbrack 0,N] \end{equation*} act as phase spaces. We work on an $N$-dimensional subspace $S_{N}$ of distributions periodic in time and frequency in the dual $S_0'(\mathbb{R})$ of the Feichtinger algebra $S_0(\mathbb{R})$ and equip it with an inner product. To construct the Hilbert space $S_{N}$ we apply a suitable double periodization operator to $S_0(\mathbb{R})$. On $S_{N}$, the STFT is applied as the usual STFT defined on $S_0'(\mathbb{R})$. This STFT is a continuous extension of the finite discrete Gabor transform from the lattice onto the entire flat torus. As such, sampling theorems on flat tori lead to Gabor frames in finite dimensions. For Gaussian windows, one is lead to spaces of analytic functions and the construction allows to prove a necessary and sufficient Nyquist rate type result, which is the analogue, for Gabor frames in finite dimensions, of a well known result of Lyubarskii and Seip-Wallst{é}n for Gabor frames with Gaussian windows and which, for $N$ odd, produces an explicit \emph{full spark Gabor frame}. The compactness of the phase space, the finite dimension of the signal spaces and our sampling theorem offer practical advantages in some applications. We illustrate this by discussing a problem of current research interest: recovering signals from the zeros of their noisy spectrograms.

Abstract:Analogs of classical results on accumulated spectrograms, the sum of spectrograms of eigenfunctions of localization operators, are established for Gabor multipliers on tight frames. We show that the lattice $\ell^1$ distance between the accumulated spectrogram and the indicator function of the Gabor multiplier mask is bounded by the length of the perimeter of the mask and that this bound is sharp in general. The methods developed for the proofs are also used to show that the Weyl-Heisenberg ensemble restricted to a lattice is hyperuniform.

Abstract:Starting from the study of pseudodifferential operators with completely periodic symbols, we obtain results of continuity and invertibility of a class of Gabor operators on time-frequency invariant Banach spaces. As an applications we find sufficient conditions for the existence of Gabor frames on the space of square integrable functions, associated to a general lattice.

Abstract:Given a frame in a finite dimensional Hilbert space we construct additive perturbations which decrease the condition number of the frame. By iterating this perturbation, we introduce an algorithm that produces a tight frame in a finite number of steps. Additionally, we give sharp bounds on additive perturbations which preserve frames and we study the effect of appending and erasing vectors to a given tight frame. We also discuss under which conditions our finite-dimensional results are extendable to infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:We study Gabor frames in the case when the window function is of hyperbolic secant type, i.e., $g(x) = (e^{ax}+e^{-bx})^{-1}$, ${\rm Re}\,a, {\rm Re}\,b>0$. A criterion for half-irregular sampling is obtained: for a separated $\Lambda\subset\mathbb{R}$ the Gabor system $\mathcal{G}(g, \Lambda \times \alpha\Z)$ is a frame in $L^2(\R)$ if and only if $D^-(\Lambda) >\alpha$ where $D^-(\Lambda)$ is the usual (Beurling) lower density of $\Lambda$. This extends a result by Gröchenig, Romero, and Stöckler which applies to the case of a standard hyperbolic secant. Also, a full description of complete interpolating sequences for the shift-invariant space generated by $g$ is given.

On the non-frame property of Gabor systems with Hermite generators and the frame set conjecture

Abstract:The frame set conjecture for Hermite functions formulated in [Gröchenig, J. Fourier Anal. Appl., 20(4):865-895, 2014] states that the Gabor frame set for these generators is the largest possible, that is, the time-frequency shifts of the Hermite functions associated with sampling rates $\alpha$ and modulation rates $\beta$ that avoid all known obstructions lead to Gabor frames for $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$. By results in [Seip and Wallstén, J. Reine Angew. Math., 429:107-113, 1992] and [Lemvig, Monatsh. Math., 182(4):899-912, 2017], it is known that the conjecture is true for the Gaussian, the $0$th order Hermite functions, and false for Hermite functions of order $2,3,6,7,10,11,\dots$, respectively. In this paper we disprove the remaining cases except for the $1$st order Hermite function.

Abstract:We study sharp frame bounds of Gabor systems over rectangular lattices for different windows and integer oversampling rate. In some cases we obtain optimality results for the square lattice, while in other cases the lattices optimizing the frame bounds and the condition number are rectangular lattices which are different for the respective quantities. Also, in some cases optimal lattices do not exist at all and a degenerated system is optimal.

Abstract:We build on our recent results on the Lipschitz dependence of the extreme spectral values of one-parameter families of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in a weighted Sjöstrand class. We prove that larger symbol classes lead to Hölder continuity with respect to the parameter. This result is then used to investigate the behavior of frame bounds of families of Gabor systems $\mathcal{G}(g,\alpha\Lambda)$ with respect to the parameter $\alpha>0$, where $\Lambda$ is a set of non-uniform, relatively separated time-frequency shifts, and $g\in M^1_s(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $0\leq s\leq 2$. In particular, we show that the frame bounds depend continuously on $\alpha$ if $g\in M^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$, and are Hölder continuous if $g\in M^1_s(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $0<s\leq 2$, with the Hölder exponent explicitly given.

Structure of nonstationary Gabor frames and their dual systems

Abstract:We investigate the structural properties of dual systems for nonstationary Gabor frames. In particular, we prove that some inverse nonstationary Gabor frame operators admit a Walnut-like representation, i.e. the operator acting on a function can be described by weighted translates of that function, even when the original frame operator is not diagonal. In this case, which only occurs when compactly supported window functions are used, the canonical dual frame partially inherits the structure of the original frame, with differences that we describe in detail. Moreover, we determine a sufficient condition for a pair of nonstationary Gabor frames to form dual frames. The equivalence of this condition to the duality of the involved systems is shown under some weak restrictions. It is then applied in a simple setup, to prove the existence of dual pairs of nonstationary Gabor systems with non-diagonal frame operator. A discussion of the results, restricted to the classical case of regular Gabor systems, precedes the statement of the general results. Here, we also explore a connection to recent work of Christensen, Kim and Kim on Gabor frames with compactly supported window function.

Abstract:This paper consists of two parts. In the first half, we solve the question raised by Heil as to whether the atom of a Gabor frame must be in $M^p(\mathbb{R})$ for some $1<p<2$. Specifically, for each $0<\alpha \beta \leq 1$ and $1<q\leq 2$ we explicitly construct Gabor frames $\mathcal{G}(g,\alpha,\beta)$ with atoms in $M^q(\mathbb{R})$ but not in $M^{p}(\mathbb{R})$ for any $1\leq p<q$. To construct such Gabor frames, we use box functions as the window functions and show that $$f = \sum_{k,n\in \mathbb{Z}} \langle f,M_{\beta n}T_{\alpha k} \mathcal{F}(\chi_{[0,\alpha]})\rangle M_{\beta n}T_{\alpha k} ( \mathcal{F}(\chi_{[0,\alpha]}))$$ holds for $f\in M^{p,q}(\mathbb{R})$ with unconditional convergence of the series for any $0<\alpha\beta \leq 1$, $1<p<\infty$ and $1\leq q<\infty$. In the second half of this paper, we study two questions related to unconditional convergence of Gabor expansions in modulation spaces. Under the assumption that the window functions are chosen from $M^p(\mathbb{R})$ for some $1\leq p\leq 2,$ we will prove several equivalent statements that the equation $f = \sum_{k,n\in \mathbb{Z}} \langle f, M_{\beta n}T_{\alpha k} \gamma \rangle M_{\beta n}T_{\alpha k} g$ can be extended from $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ to $M^q(\mathbb{R})$ for all $f\in M^q(\mathbb{R})$ and all $p\leq q\leq p'$ with unconditional convergence of the series. Finally, we characterize all Gabor systems $\{M_{\beta n}T_{\alpha k}g\}_{n,k\in \mathbb{Z}}$ in $M^{p,q}(\mathbb{R})$ for any $1\leq p,q<\infty$ for which $f = \sum \langle f, \gamma_{k,n} \rangle M_{\beta n}T_{\alpha k} g$ with unconditional convergence of the series for all $f$ in $M^{p,q}(\mathbb{R})$ and all alternative duals $\{\gamma_{k,n}\}_{k,n\in \mathbb{Z}}$ of $\{M_{\beta n}T_{\alpha k} g\}_{n,k\in \mathbb{Z}}$.

Abstract:We introduce new frames, called metaplectic Gabor frames, as natural generalizations of Gabor frames in the framework of metaplectic Wigner distributions, cf. [7,8,5,17,27,28]. Namely, we develop the theory of metaplectic atoms in a full-general setting and prove an inversion formula for metaplectic Wigner distributions on R d . Its discretization provides metaplectic Gabor frames. Next, we deepen the understanding of the so-called shift-invertible metaplectic Wigner distributions, showing that they can be represented, up to chirps, as rescaled short-time Fourier transforms. As an application, we derive a new characterization of modulation and Wiener amalgam spaces. Thus, these metaplectic distributions (and related frames) provide meaningful definitions of local frequencies and can be used to measure effectively the local frequency content of signals.

Abstract:We study Gabor frames with Hermite window functions. Gröchenig and Lyubarskii provided a sufficient density condition for their frame sets, which leads to what we call the ``safety region". For rectangular lattices and Hermite windows of order 4 and higher, we enlarge this safety region by providing new points on the boundary of this region. For this purpose, we employ the Janssen representation of the frame operator to compare its distance to the identity in the operator norm. The calculations lead to estimates on series involving Laguerre polynomials with Gaussian weight functions.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of constructing sparse time-frequency representations with flexible frequency resolution, studying the theory of nonstationary Gabor frames in the framework of decomposition spaces. Given a painless nonstationary Gabor frame, we construct a compatible decomposition space and prove that the nonstationary Gabor frame forms a Banach frame for the decomposition space. Furthermore, we show that the decomposition space norm can be completely characterized by a sparseness condition on the frame coefficients and we prove an upper bound on the approximation error occurring when thresholding the frame coefficients for signals belonging to the decomposition space.

Abstract:We introduce an equivalence relation on the set of lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ such that equivalent lattices support identical structures of Gabor systems, up to unitary equivalence, a notion we define. These equivalence classes are parameterized by symplectic forms on $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ and they consist of lattices related by symplectic transformations. This implies that $2d^2 - d$ parameters suffice to describe the possible structures of Gabor systems over lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, as opposed to the $4d^2$ degrees of freedom in the choice of lattice. We also prove that (modulo a minor complication related to complex conjugation) symplectic transformations are the only linear transformations of the time-frequency plane which implement equivalences of this kind, thereby characterizing symplectic transformations as the structure-preserving transformations of the time-frequency plane in the context of Gabor analysis. In addition, we investigate the equivalence classes that have separable lattices as representatives and find that the parameter space in this case is $d^2$-dimensional. We provide an explicit example showing that non-separable lattices with irrational lattice points can behave exactly like separable and rational ones. This approach also allows us to formulate and prove a higher-dimensional variant of the Lyubarskii-Seip-Wallstén Theorem for Gaussian Gabor frames. This gives us, for a large class of lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ (including all symplectic ones), necessary and sufficient conditions for $d$-parameter families of Gaussians to generate Gabor frames.

In the definition of fusion frames, we replace the orthogonal projections on $\frak{M} _k$ by $\Theta_k$ and find a slight generalization of fusion frames. In the case where, $\Theta_k$ is self-adjoint and $\Theta_k(\frak{M} _k)= \frak{M} _k$ for all $k \in \mathbb{Z}$, we show that if a $g-$fusion frame $\{(\frak{M} _k, \Theta_k)\}_{k \in \mathbb{Z}}$ is represented via a linear operator $T$ on $\hbox{span} \{\frak{M} _k\}_{ k \in \mathbb{Z}}$, then $T$ is bounded; moreover, if $\{(\frak{M} _k, \Theta_k)\}_{k \in \mathbb{Z}}$ is a tight $g-$fusion frame, then $T$ is not invertible. We also study the perturbation and the stability of these fusion frames. Finally, we give some examples to show the validity of the results.

Tight Frames Generated By A Graph Short-Time Fourier Transform

Abstract:A graph short-time Fourier transform is defined using the eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian and a graph heat kernel as a window parametrized by a non-negative time parameter $t$. We show that the corresponding Gabor-like system forms a frame for $\mathbb{C}^d$ and give a description of the spectrum of the corresponding frame operator in terms of the graph heat kernel and the spectrum of the underlying graph Laplacian. For two classes of algebraic graphs, we prove the frame is tight and independent of the window parameter $t$.

Special emphasis is placed on the case where the sequences $g_l$ are real-valued. The questions addressed in this work include the characterization of quaternionic Gabor systems that form frames, the characterization of those that are orthonormal bases, and the admissibility of such systems. We also explore necessary and/or sufficient conditions for Gabor frames. The issue of duality is also discussed. Furthermore, we study the stability of these systems.

Abstract:We consider sparseness properties of adaptive time-frequency representations obtained using nonstationary Gabor frames (NSGFs). NSGFs generalize classical Gabor frames by allowing for adaptivity in either time or frequency. It is known that the concept of painless nonorthogonal expansions generalizes to the nonstationary case, providing perfect reconstruction and an FFT based implementation for compactly supported window functions sampled at a certain density. It is also known that for some signal classes, NSGFs with flexible time resolution tend to provide sparser expansions than can be obtained with classical Gabor frames. In this article we show, for the continuous case, that sparseness of a nonstationary Gabor expansion is equivalent to smoothness in an associated decomposition space. In this way we characterize signals with sparse expansions relative to NSGFs with flexible time resolution. Based on this characterization we prove an upper bound on the approximation error occurring when thresholding the coefficients of the corresponding frame expansions. We complement the theoretical results with numerical experiments, estimating the rate of approximation obtained from thresholding the coefficients of both stationary and nonstationary Gabor expansions.
