Abstract:It is well known that closed exact Lagrangians in cotangent bundles of closed manifolds have vanishing Maslov class and are homotopy equivalent to the zero section. In this paper we greatly simplify the proof of vanishing Maslov class and generalize the proof to a slightly large family of Weinstein domains.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish an L-2-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hrmander's L-2 estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact Kahler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Girbau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem, and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of strong local Torelli and T-class for polarized manifolds, and prove that strong local Torelli implies global Torelli theorem on the Torelli spaces for polarized manifolds in the T-class. We discuss many new examples of projective manifolds for which such global Torelli theorem holds. As applications we prove that, in these cases, a canonical completion of the Torelli space is a bounded pseudoconvex domain in complex Euclidean space, and show that generic Torelli implies global Torelli on moduli space with certain level structure.

Abstract:Every Maslov-zero Lagrangian torus in a K3 surface has non-trivial homology class. This note aims to extend this result to Lagrangian tori with Maslov indices congruent to zero modulo 4. Conversely, we show that every homologically non-trivial Lagrangian torus is necessarily Maslov-zero.

Abstract:We consider exact Lagrangian submanifolds in cotangent bundles. Under certain additional restrictions (triviality of the fundamental group of the cotangent bundle, and of the Maslov class and second Stiefel–Whitney class of the Lagrangian submanifold) we prove such submanifolds are Floer-cohomologically indistinguishable from the zero-section. This implies strong restrictions on their topology. An essentially equivalent result was recently proved independently by Nadler [16], using a different approach.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed
Gauss--Bonnet for CSM classes of very affine manifolds, and tropical isotopies

Abstract:The CSM class of a very affine manifold $U$ is represented by the rank drop locus of a general tuple of torus invariant 1-forms on it. This equality holds in the homology of any toric compactification $X\supset U$. It was proved for schön $U$ by Huh, and later for all $U$ in the homology of $X=CP^n$ by Maxim--Rodriguez--Wang--Wu, using Ginsburg's interpretation of CSM classes as Lagrangian cycles. We deduce this identity in full generality from properties of affine characteristic classes, give an explicit sufficient condition of general position for the 1-forms, and use it to extend the identity to non-torus invariant 1-forms. Along the way, we characterize very affine varieties of ML degree 0, and give a useful criterion for a family of varieties to have a constant tropical fan (``tropical isotopy theorem''). Our main idea is a technique to study very affine varieties without compactifying them. As a result we do not have to deal with singularities occuring at the boundary of the compactification, which would require less constructive methods (such as resolution of singularities). This is what enables us to give constructive genericity conditions in this Gauss--Bonnet theorem.

Maslov class rigidity for Lagrangian submanifolds via Hofer's geometry

Abstract:In this work, we establish new rigidity results for the Maslov class of Lagrangian submanifolds in large classes of closed and convex symplectic manifolds. Our main result establishes upper bounds for the minimal Maslov number of displaceable Lagrangian submanifolds which are product manifolds whose factors each admit a metric of negative sectional curvature. Such Lagrangian submanifolds exist in every symplectic manifold of dimension greater than six or equal to four. The proof utilizes the relations between closed geodesics on the Lagrangian, the periodic orbits of geometric Hamiltonian flows supported near the Lagrangian, and the length minimizing properties of these flows with respect to the negative Hofer length functional.

Abstract:Let X be a toric variety. We establish vanishing (and non-vanishing) results for the sheaves , where is a strong log resolution of singularities with reduced exceptional divisor E . These extend the local vanishing theorem for toric varieties in Mustaţă et al. (J. Inst. Math. Jussieu 19(3):801-819, 2020). Our consideration of these sheaves is motivated by the notion of k -rational singularities introduced by Friedman and Laza (Higher Du Bois and higher rational singularities, 2001). In particular, our results lead to criteria for toric varieties to have k -rational singularities, as defined in Shen et al. (On k-Du Bois and k-rational singularities, 2023).

Abstract:Given a bounded constructible complex of sheaves on a complex Abelian variety, we prove an equality relating the cohomology jump loci of and its singular support. As an application, we identify two subsets of the set of holomorphic 1-forms with zeros on a complex smooth projective irregular variety X ; one from Green-Lazarsfeld's cohomology jump loci and one from the Kashiwara's estimates for singular supports. This result is related to Kotschick's conjecture about the equivalence between the existence of nowhere vanishing global holomorphic 1-forms and the existence of a fibre bundle structure over the circle. Our results give a conjecturally equivalent formulation using singular support, which is equivalent to a criterion involving cohomology jump loci proposed by Schreieder. As another application, we reprove a recent result proved by Schreieder and Yang; namely if X has simple Albanese variety and admits a fibre bundle structure over the circle, then the Albanese morphism cohomologically behaves like a smooth morphism with respect to integer coefficients. In a related direction, we address the question whether the set of 1-forms that vanish somewhere is a finite union of linear subspaces of . We show that this is indeed the case for forms admitting zero locus of codimension 1.

Abstract:Let S be a projective simply connected complex surface and L be a line bundle on S. We study the moduli space of stable compactly supported 2-dimensional sheaves on the total spaces of L. The moduli space admits a C∗action induced by scaling the fibers of L. We identify certain components of the fixed locus of the moduli space with the moduli space of torsion free sheaves and the nested Hilbert schemes on S. We define the localized (reduced) DonaldsonThomas invariants of L by virtual localization in the case that L twisted by the anti-canonical bundle of S admits a nonzero global section. When pg(S) > 0, in combination with Mochizuki’s formulas, we are able to express these invariants in terms of the invariants from the nested Hilbert schemes defined by the authors in [GSY17a], the Seiberg-Witten invariants of S, and the integrals over the products of Hilbert schemes of points on S. When L is the canonical bundle of S, the Vafa-Witten invariants defined recently by Tanaka-Thomas, can be extracted from these localized DT invariants. VW invariants are expected to have modular properties as predicted by S-duality.

Abstract:This paper presents a gentle introduction to cohomology vanishing theorems, largely based on the paper work of Hongshan Li. It offers an insightful exploration of unitary local systems on complex manifolds, particularly focusing on their characteristics near normal crossing divisors. The Main Vanishing Theorem, demonstrating the vanishing of specific cohomology groups associated with unitary local systems, stands as a central result in this work. In our exposition, we delve into the interplay between local system theory, Hodge theory, and the geometry of complex manifolds. The canonical extensions of unitary local systems are examined in detail, providing a deeper understanding of their algebraic and geometric properties. The foundational aspects of these systems are thoroughly discussed, culminating in an in-depth analysis of their spectral sequences and the behavior of associated de Rham complexes. A pivotal aspect of the paper is the exploration of the spectral sequence associated with the Hodge filtration on de Rham complexes. Here, we establish its degeneration at the E1 stage and its implications for cohomology groups. This work also encompasses a thorough examination of the properties of Higgs bundles, particularly in the context of parabolic structures and semistability. The amalgamation of these diverse concepts and techniques contributes to a broader understanding of the complex interdependencies in the realm of unitary local systems and their cohomological properties.

Abstract:We prove that, for closed exact embedded Lagrangian submanifolds of cotangent bundles, the homomorphism of homotopy groups induced by the stable Lagrangian Gauss map vanishes. In particular, we prove that this map is null-homotopic for all spheres. The key tool that we introduce in order to prove this is the notion of twisted generating function and we show that every closed exact Lagrangian can be described using such an object, by extending a doubling argument developed in the setting of sheaf theory. Floer theory and sheaf theory constrain the type of twisted generating functions that can appear to a class which is closely related to Waldhausen's tube space, and our main result follows by a theorem of Bökstedt which computes the rational homotopy type of the tube space.

Abstract:We classify, up to a local isometry, all non-Kahler almost Kahler 4-manifolds for which the fundamental 2-form is an eigenform of the Weyl tensor, and whose Ricci tensor is invariant with respect to the almost complex structure. Equivalently, such almost Kahler 4-manifolds satisfy the third curvature condition of A. Gray. We use our local classification to show that, in the compact case, the third curvature condition of Gray is equivalent to the integrability of the corresponding almost complex structure.
Torsion Vanishing for Some Shimura Varieties

Abstract:We generalize the torsion vanishing results of Caraiani-Scholze and Koshikawa. Our results apply to the cohomology of general Shimura varieties $(\mathbf{G},X)$ of PEL type $A$ or $C$, localized at a suitable maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ in the spherical Hecke algebra at primes $p$ such that $\mathbf{G}_{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}$ is a group for which we know the Fargues-Scholze local Langlands correspondence is the semi-simplification of a suitably nice local Langlands correspondence. This is accomplished by combining Koshikawa's technique, the theory of geometric Eisenstein series over the Fargues-Fontaine curve, the work of Santos describing the structure of the fibers of the minimally and toroidally compactified Hodge-Tate period morphism for general PEL type Shimura varieties of type $A$ or $C$, and ideas developed by Zhang on comparing Hecke correspondences on the moduli stack of $G$-bundles with the cohomology of Shimura varieties. In the process, we also establish a description of the generic part of the cohomology that bears resemblance to the work of Xiao-Zhu. Moreover, we also construct a filtration on the compactly supported cohomology that differs from Manotovan's filtration in the case that the Shimura variety is non-compact, allowing us to circumvent some of the circumlocutions taken by Cariani-Scholze. Our method showcases a very general strategy for proving such torsion vanishing results, and should bear even more fruit once the inputs are generalized. Motivated by this, we formulate an even more general torsion vanishing conjecture.

Abstract:Let $-\im\Lie_\T$ (essentially Lie derivative with respect to $\T$, a smooth nowhere zero real vector field) and $P$ be commuting differential operators, respectively of orders 1 and $m\geq 1$, the latter formally normal, both acting on sections of a vector bundle over a closed manifold. It is shown that if $P+(-i\Lie_\T)^m$ is elliptic then the restriction of $-\im\Lie_\T$ to $\Dom\subset \ker P\subset L^2$ yields a selfadjoint operator $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom:\Dom\subset\ker P\to \ker P$ with compact resolvent ($\Dom$ is specified carefully). It is also shown that, in the presence of an additional hypothesis on microlocal hypoellipticity of $P$, $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom$ is semi-bounded. These results are applied to CR manifolds on which $\T$ acts as an infinitesimal CR transformation which are then shown to yield versions of Kodaira's vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We prove the triviality of the first L2 cohomology class of based path spaces of Riemannian manifolds furnished with Brownian motion measure, and the consequent vanishing of L2 harmonic one-forms. We give explicit formulae for closed and co-closed one-forms expressed as differentials of functions and co-differentials of L2 two-forms, respectively; these are considered as extended Clark-Ocone formulae. A feature of the proof is the use of the temporal structure of path spaces to relate a rough exterior derivative operator on one-forms to the exterior differentiation operator used to construct the de Rham complex and the self-adjoint Laplacian on L2 one-forms. This Laplacian is shown to have a spectral gap.

Vanishing cycles of symplectic foliations

Abstract:Recent years have shown that the usual generalizations of taut foliations to higher dimensions, based only on topological concepts, do not yield a theory comparable in richness to the $3$-dimensional one. The aim of this article is to prove that strong symplectic foliations are, however, a natural candidate for such a generalization that does lead to some interesting rigidity results, such as potentially topological obstructions on the underlying ambient manifold. We introduce a high-dimensional generalization of $3$-dimensional vanishing cycles for symplectic foliations, which we call Lagrangian vanishing cycles, and prove that they prevent a symplectic foliation from being strong, just as vanishing cycles prevent tautness in dimension $3$ due to a classical result by Novikov from 1964. We then describe, in every codimension, examples of symplectically foliated manifolds which admit Lagrangian vanishing cycles, but for which more classical arguments do not obstruct the foliation from being strong. In codimension $1$, this is achieved by a rather explicit modification of the symplectic foliation, which allows us to open up closed leaves having non-trivial holonomy on both sides, and is thus of independent interest. Since there is no comprehensive source on holomorphic curves with boundary in symplectic foliations, we also give a detailed introduction to much of the analytic theory, hoping that it might serve as a reference for future work in this direction.
