Abstract:From the telecommunication companies' perspective, the preference for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) for sixth-generation (6G) is to enhance existing infrastructure with sensing capabilities while minimizing network alterations and optimizing available resources. This prompts the investigation of ISAC leveraging the existing infrastructure of fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) signals as defined by the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP). Additionally, improving spectral efficiency is crucial in scenarios with high demand for both communication and sensing applications to maintain the required quality of service (QoS). To address these challenges, we propose the superposition of the physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) for communication and the positioning reference signal (PRS) for sensing with proper power allocation. Furthermore, we propose a novel algorithm to reduce the interference for data decoding caused by PRS. Moreover, we introduce the joint exploitation of PRS and demodulation reference signal (DMRS) to prevent range ambiguity in the form of ghost targets. Through simulation analysis, we demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating PDSCH and PRS symbols within a unified resource grid. Our results show that the introduced approaches not only eliminate range ambiguity when sensing targets from gNBs but also enhance spectral efficiency by reducing interference between PRS and PDSCH. Simulation results show throughput enhancement and up to 57% improvement in bit error rate (BER). This paves the way for supporting sensing applications in the forthcoming network generation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to solve the following two main problems: 1. **Improve spectral efficiency**: In the sixth - generation (6G) communication system, the demand for Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology is increasing day by day. In order not to significantly modify the existing network architecture while enhancing the sensing ability of the infrastructure and optimizing resource utilization, the author proposes a method of using the Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) for communication and the Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) for sensing. Through reasonable power allocation, communication and sensing can be carried out simultaneously in the same OFDM resource grid, thereby improving spectral efficiency. 2. **Eliminate range ambiguity and ghost targets**: When using PRS for distance estimation, due to its periodic structure, range ambiguity may be introduced, resulting in the appearance of ghost targets. This makes it difficult to distinguish between real targets and false targets. To solve this problem, the author proposes two algorithms to process PRS symbols under different comb sizes and jointly utilize the Demodulation Reference Signal (DMRS) to eliminate ghost targets while maintaining the maximum detection range. ### Main methods and techniques - **Superposition of PDSCH and PRS**: By superposing PDSCH and PRS symbols in the same OFDM resource grid, make full use of time and frequency resources to achieve efficient data transmission and high - resolution sensing. - **Interference cancellation algorithm**: In order to reduce the impact of PRS on PDSCH data decoding, the author develops a DMRS - based channel estimation method. By reconstructing the received PRS signal and subtracting it from the actual received signal, the interference is reduced. - **Algorithms for eliminating range ambiguity**: - For the case where the comb size is 2 or 4, by applying the distance estimation algorithm to PRS and DMRS respectively and performing the Hadamard product on the results, ghost targets can be effectively eliminated. - For the case where the comb size is 6 or 12, another method is adopted. By normalizing the extracted PRS and DMRS symbols and performing IFFT on their sum, the true distance of the target is finally determined. ### Simulation results The simulation results carried out by the MATLAB 5G Toolbox show that the proposed algorithm not only eliminates range ambiguity but also significantly improves the throughput and reduces the Bit Error Rate (BER) by up to 57%. These results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of this method. ### Conclusion The scheme proposed in this paper for the first time proves the feasibility of superposing PRS and PDSCH symbols in the OFDM resource grid under the constraints of 3GPP standards. Future research will further explore power allocation under different Signal - to - Noise Ratio (SNR) conditions and its impact on BER and throughput, as well as the trade - off between detection accuracy and BER/throughput under different sub - carrier spacings.
