Abstract:The axion or axion-like particle motivated from a natural solution of strong CP problem or string theory is a promising dark matter candidate. We study the new observational effects of ultralight axion-like particles by the space-borne gravitational wave detector and the radio telescope. Taking the neutron star-black hole binary as an example, we demonstrate that the gravitational waveform could be obviously modified by the slow depletion of the axion cloud around the black hole formed through the superradiance process. We compare these new effects on the binary with the well-studied effects from dynamical friction with dark matter and dipole radiation in model-independent ways. Finally, we discuss the constraints from LIGO/Virgo and study the detectability of the ultralight axion particles at LISA and TianQin.

Implication of nano-Hertz stochastic gravitational wave background on ultralight axion particles and fuzzy dark matter

Abstract:Recently, the Hellings Downs correlation has been observed by different pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations, such as NANOGrav, European PTA, Parkes PTA, and Chinese PTA. These PTA measurements of the most precise pulsars within the Milky Way show the first evidence for the stochastic gravitational wave background of our Universe. We study the ultralight axion interpretation of the new discovery by investigating the gravitational wave from axion transitions between different energy levels of the gravitational atoms, which are composed of cosmic populated Kerr black holes and their surrounding axion clouds formed from the superradiant process. We demonstrate that this new observation naturally admits an ultralight axion interpretation around $2\times10^{-21}$~eV, which is consistent with the typical fuzzy dark matter.

Searching for ultra-light dark matter through frequency modulation of gravitational waves

Abstract:Ultra-light bosons, naturally appearing in well-motivated extensions to the Standard Model, can constitute all the dark matter. Models with particle mass close to the smallest phenomenologically allowed exhibit coherent field configurations at (sub)galactic scales, oscillating at a frequency corresponding to the fundamental mass of the dark matter particle. The gravitational field of these structures inherits the dark matter field's coherent oscillations, leaving an imprint on gravitational (and electromagnetic) waves sourced close to (or in) such overdensities. This happens via a heterodyning frequency modulation, which can later be decoded in a gravitational-wave detector. An analogous effect occurs in models with universal (conformal) couplings of ultra-light bosons with ordinary matter, generated by the direct interaction with the oscillating field. In this work, we explore this phenomenon in detail and assess the capability of near-future interferometers to probe ultra-light dark matter and its potential conformal couplings to matter. Using astrophysical population models, together with results from cosmological simulations, we find that the observation of gravitational waves from spinning neutron stars at the Galactic Centre with the Einstein Telescope/Cosmic Explorer would be particularly effective in constraining ultra-light dark matter.

Gravitational Interaction of Ultralight Dark Matter with Interferometers

Abstract:Ultralight dark matter exhibits an order-one density fluctuation over the spatial scale of its wavelength. These fluctuations gravitationally interact with gravitational wave interferometers, leading to distinctive signals in detectors. We investigate the ultralight dark matter-induced effects in the gravitational wave interferometers. We perform a systematic computation of the power spectrum of ultralight dark matter in interferometers. We show that the ultralight dark matter-induced effect is most relevant for the interferometers with long baseline and that it is only a sub-leading effect compared to the estimated noise level in the case of Laser Interferometer Space Antenna or future interferometers with an arm-length comparable to a few astronomical units. Gravitational wave interferometers can then place upper limits on the ultralight dark matter density in the solar system. We find that, under certain assumptions, future interferometers with AU-scale arm-length might probe the dark matter density a few hundred times the local dark matter density, which is measured over a much larger spatial scale.

Abstract:Ultralight axions and dark photons are well-motivated dark matter candidates. Inside the plasma, once the mass of ultralight dark matter candidates equals the plasma frequency, they can resonantly convert into electromagnetic waves, due to the coupling between the ultralight dark matter particles and the standard model photons. The converted electromagnetic waves are monochromatic. In this article, we review the development of using radio detectors to search for ultralight dark matter conversions in the solar corona and solar wind plasma.

Oscillations of Ultralight Dark Photon into Gravitational Waves

Abstract:The discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) opens a new window for exploring the physics of the early universe. Identifying the source of GWs and their spectra today turn out to be the important tasks so as to assist the experimental detection of stochastic GWs. In this paper, we investigate the oscillations of the ultralight dark photon (ULDP) into GWs in the dark halo. Assuming dark matter is composed of the ULDP and there are primordial dark magnetic fields (PDMFs) arising from the axion inflation and/or the dark phase transition, then the ULDP can oscillate into the GW when it passes through an environment of PDMFs. We derive the local energy density of GWs in the galaxy cluster induced by the instaneous oscillation of ULDP in the PDMFs. These stochastic local GWs exhibit a pulse-like spectrum, with frequency depending on the mass of the ULDP, and can be detected in Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) or future space-based interferometers. We also find that the low-frequency GW signal observed by the NANOGrav collaboration and other PTA experiments can be explained by the oscillation of the ULDP in the PDMFs in the early universe.

Abstract:In this article we put forward a novel phenomenological paradigm in which particle physics beyond the Standard Model may be tested by radio astronomy if these are related to a first order phase transition in the early Universe. For this type of Dark Matter models, the first order phase transition takes place at keV scales, and hence, induces the production of a stochastic gravitational waves background that can be detected from Pulsar timing measurements. We demonstrate this hypothetical feasibility by studying a class of Majoron Dark Matter models, which are related to a first order phase transition of the U(1)L or U(1)B−L symmetry and are consequently dubbed as violent Majorons. These phenomena are expected to be examined by the ongoing and forthcoming radio experiments, including FAST, SKA and IPTA.

Abstract:The evidence of gravitational wave was first indirectly confirmed by the orbital period loss of Hulse-Taylor binary system which agrees well with the Einstein's general relativistic prediction. The perihelion precession of planets, gravitational light bending and Shapiro time delay are other tests of Einstein's general theory of relativity. However there are small uncertainties in the measurements of those observations from the general relativistic prediction. To account those uncertainties, we propose radiation of ultralight axions and vector gauge boson particles in the context of $U(1)^\prime$ extended beyond standard model scenario. We obtain constraints on ultralight axion parameters (axion mass and decay constant) from the observational uncertainties of orbital period loss of compact binary systems, gravitational light bending, Shapiro time delay and birefringence phenomena. We also obtain the bounds on ultralight $U(1)_{L_\mu-L_\tau}$ gauge bosons from the orbital period loss of compact binary systems. The uncertainties in the perihelion precession of planets also put bounds on the $U(1)_{L_e-L_{\mu,\tau}}$ light gauge bosons. These light particles can be promising candidates of fuzzy dark matter which can be probed from the above precision measurements.

Abstract:Ultra-Light Dark Matter (ULDM) halos constituted by Ultra-Light Axions (ULAs) generate gravitational potentials that oscillate in time. In this paper I show these potentials interact with gravitational waves, resonantly amplifying them. For all ULA masses considered, the resonance in the solar region is currently negligible, while in a denser dark matter environment, which may arise in different scenarios, it might become significant. The frequency of the amplified gravitational wave is equal to the ULA mass in the case of first resonance band, which represents the most efficient scenario.

Abstract:Ultralight bosons are predicted in many extensions to the Standard Model and are popular dark matter candidates. The black hole superradiance mechanism allows for these particles to be probed using only their gravitational interaction. In this scenario, an ultralight boson cloud may form spontaneously around a spinning black hole and extract a non-negligible fraction of the black hole's mass. These oscillating clouds produce quasi-monochromatic, long-duration gravitational waves that may be detectable by ground-based or space-based gravitational wave detectors. We discuss the capability of a new long-duration signal tracking method, based on a hidden Markov model, to detect gravitational wave signals generated by ultralight vector boson clouds, including cases where the signal frequency evolution timescale is much shorter than that of a typical continuous wave signal. We quantify the detection horizon distances for vector boson clouds with current- and next-generation ground-based detectors. We demonstrate that vector clouds hosted by black holes with mass $\gtrsim 60 M_{\odot}$ and spin $\gtrsim 0.6$ are within the reach of current-generation detectors up to a luminosity distance of $\sim 1$ Gpc. This search method enables one to target vector boson clouds around remnant black holes from compact binary mergers detected by gravitational-wave detectors. We discuss the impact of the sky localization of the merger events and demonstrate that a typical remnant black hole reasonably well-localized by the current generation detector network is accessible in a follow-up search.

Shedding Light on Dark Sectors with Gravitational Waves

Abstract:The nature of dark matter remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in elementary particle physics. It might well be that the dark matter particle belongs to a dark sector completely secluded or extremely weakly coupled to the visible sector. We demonstrate that gravitational waves arising from first order phase transitions in the early Universe can be used to look for signatures of such dark sector models connected to neutron physics. This introduces a new connection between gravitational wave physics and nuclear physics experiments. Focusing on two particular extensions of the Standard Model with dark U(1) and SU(2) gauge groups constructed to address the neutron lifetime puzzle, we show how those signatures can be searched for in future gravitational wave and astrometry experiments.

Detecting Ultralight Dark Matter Gravitationally with Laser Interferometers in Space

Abstract:Ultralight dark matter (ULDM) is one of the leading well-motivated dark matter candidates, predicted in many theories beyond the standard model of particle physics and cosmology. There have been increasing interests in searching for ULDM in physical and astronomical experiments, mostly assuming there are additional interactions other than gravity between ULDM and normal matter. Here we demonstrate that even if ULDM has only gravitational interaction, it shall induce gravitational perturbations in solar system that may be large enough to cause detectable signals in future gravitational-wave (GW) laser interferometers in space. We investigate the sensitivities of Michelson time-delay interferometer to ULDM of various spins, and show vector ULDM with mass $m\lesssim 10^{-18}~$eV can be probed by space-based GW detectors aiming at $\mu$Hz frequencies. Our findings exhibit that GW detectors may directly probe ULDM in some mass ranges that otherwise are challenging to examine.

Faint Radio Signals from Very High-Frequency Gravitational Waves in the Strong Astrophysical Magnetic Field

Abstract:Gravitational waves (GWs) may convert into photons in a magnetic field (MF) through the Gertsenshtein-Zeldovich (GZ) effect. The properties of the MF significantly influence this conversion probability. Although interstellar and interplanetary magnetic fields are vast, their low intensities result in limited conversion probabilities. Here, we confirm that strong MFs in neutron stars significantly increase this conversion probability. We use single-dish telescopes FAST, TMRT, QTT, and GBT, as well as the radio interferometers SKA1-MID and SKA2-MID, to estimate the detection potential of very high-frequency (VHF) GWs. We infer two types of signals in the $10^{6}-10^{11}\mathrm{~Hz}$ radio waveband: transient and persistent signals. We propose three criteria for distinguishing signals from other astrophysical signals while identifying different GW sources. We derive the expected intrinsic spectral line shapes for gravitons by considering their mass and spin in quantum field theory (QFT). These are smooth, continuous lines that don't have any absorption or emission features. FAST has the highest sensitivity in single-dish telescopes for detecting VHF GWs, it provides a bound on the characteristic strain at $h_c<10^{-23}$ near $h_c=10^{-24}$ within $\left[1\mathrm{~GHz}, 3\mathrm{~GHz}\right]$ with 6 hours of observation time. This exceeds the threshold for detecting VHF GWs produced by primordial black holes (PBHs) with over $5\sigma$ confidence and approaches the Big Bang nucleosynthesis bound. Moreover, SKA2-MID has greater detection potential. Detection of such GWs would enhance our understanding of cosmological models, refine the PBH parameter spaces, and serve as a test for QFT.

Abstract:Light feebly interacting dark matter is widely predicted in a plethora of new physics models. However, due to very feeble couplings with the standard-model particles, its relic density produced via the relativistic thermal freeze-out process easily exceeds the observed value. The entropy dilution in an early matter-dominated era provides an attractive mechanism for solving such an overabundance problem. In this work, we note that this dark matter dilution mechanism will lead to two distinctive kinks in the primordial GW spectrum, whose frequencies strongly correlate with the DM mass. Abstract:We establish a generic, fully-relativistic formalism to study gravitational-wave emission by extreme-mass-ratio systems in spherically-symmetric, non-vacuum black-hole spacetimes. The potential applications to astrophysical setups range from black holes accreting baryonic matter to those within axionic clouds and dark matter environments, allowing to assess the impact of the galactic potential, of accretion, gravitational drag and halo feedback on the generation and propagation of gravitational-waves. We apply our methods to a black hole within a halo of matter. We find fluid modes imparted to the gravitational-wave signal (a clear evidence of the black hole fundamental mode instability) and the tantalizing possibility to infer galactic properties from gravitational-wave measurements by sensitive, low-frequency detectors.

Continuous Gravitational Waves: A New Window to Look for Heavy Non-annihilating Dark Matter

Abstract:Sun-like stars can transmute into comparable mass black holes by steadily accumulating heavy non-annihilating dark matter particles over the course of their lives. If such stars form in binary systems, they could give rise to quasi-monochromatic, persistent gravitational waves, commonly known as continuous gravitational waves, as they inspiral toward one another. We demonstrate that next-generation space-based detectors, e.g., Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Big Bang Observer (BBO), can provide novel constraints on dark matter parameters (dark matter mass and its interaction cross-section with the nucleons) by probing gravitational waves from transmuted Sun-like stars that are in close binaries. Our projected constraints depend on several astrophysical uncertainties, nevertheless, are competitive with the existing constraints obtained from cosmological measurements as well as terrestrial direct searches, demonstrating a notable science-case for these space-based gravitational wave detectors as probes of particle dark matter.

Abstract:Ultra-high frequency gravitational waves in the MHz to THz regime promise a unique possibility to probe the very early universe, particle physics at very high energies and exotic astrophysical objects - but achieving the sensitivity required for detection is an immense challenge. This is a brief summary of recent progress in electromagnetic high-frequency gravitational wave searches, which are based on classical electromagnetism in a space-time perturbed by gravitational waves. A particular focus is given to synergies with axion searches and atomic precision measurements. This article was prepared as proceedings for Moriond EW 2023.

Abstract:We propose a novel method to study the ultra-light scalars, where compact rotating objects undergo the phenomenon of superradiance to create gravitational waves and neutrino flux signals. The neutrino flux results from the 'right' coupling between the ultra-light scalars and the neutrinos. We study the intertwining of gravitational waves and neutrino flux signals produced from a single source and elaborate if and when the signals can be detected in existing and upcoming experiments in a direct manner. We also discuss an indirect way to test it by means of cosmic neutrino background which can be detected by upcoming PTOLEMY experiment.
