Abstract:The proliferation of 5G technology presents an unprecedented challenge in managing the energy consumption of densely deployed network infrastructures, particularly Base Stations (BSs), which account for the majority of power usage in mobile networks. The O-RAN architecture, with its emphasis on open and intelligent design, offers a promising framework to address the Energy Efficiency (EE) demands of modern telecommunication systems. This paper introduces two xApps designed for the O-RAN architecture to optimize power savings without compromising the Quality of Service (QoS). Utilizing a commercial RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) simulator, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed xApps through extensive simulations that reflect real-world operational conditions. Our results show a significant reduction in power consumption, achieving up to 50% power savings with a minimal number of User Equipments (UEs), by intelligently managing the operational state of Radio Cards (RCs), particularly through switching between active and sleep modes based on network resource block usage conditions.

Abstract:Open RAN (O-RAN) defines an emerging cellular radio access network (RAN) architecture for future 6G wireless networks, emphasizing openness and intelligence which are considered the foundations of future 6G wireless networks. While the inherent complexity and flexibility of the RAN give rise to many new research problems, progress in developing solutions is hampered due to the lack of end-to-end, fully developed platforms that can help in pursuing use cases in realistic environments. This has motivated the formation of open-source frameworks available to the wireless community. However, the rapid evolution of dedicated platforms and solutions utilizing various software-based technologies often leaves questions regarding the interoperability and interactions between the components in the framework. This article shows how to build a software-defined radio testbed featuring an open-source 5G system that can interact with the near-real-time (near-RT) RAN intelligent controller (RIC) of the O-RAN architecture through standard interfaces. We focus on the O-RAN E2 interface interactions and outline the procedure to enable a RAN system with E2 capabilities. We demonstrate the working of two xApps on the testbed with detailed E2 message exchange procedures and their role in controlling next-generation RANs.

Abstract:RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) are programmable platforms that enable data-driven closed-loop control in the O-RAN architecture. They collect telemetry and data from the RAN, process it in custom applications, and enforce control or new configurations on the RAN. Such custom applications in the Near-Real-Time (RT) RIC are called xApps, and enable a variety of use cases related to radio resource management. Despite numerous open-source and commercial projects focused on the Near-RT RIC, developing and testing xApps that are interoperable across multiple RAN implementations is a time-consuming and technically challenging process. This is primarily caused by the complexity of the protocol of the E2 interface, which enables communication between the RIC and the RAN while providing a high degree of flexibility, with multiple Service Models (SMs) providing plug-and-play functionalities such as data reporting and RAN control. In this paper, we propose xDevSM, an open-source flexible framework for O-RAN service models, aimed at simplifying xApp development for the O-RAN Software Community (OSC) Near-RT RIC. xDevSM reduces the complexity of the xApp development process, allowing developers to focus on the control logic of their xApps and moving the logic of the E2 service models behind simple Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). We demonstrate the effectiveness of this framework by deploying and testing xApps across various RAN software platforms, including OpenAirInterface and srsRAN. This framework significantly facilitates the development and validation of solutions and algorithms on O-RAN networks, including the testing of data-driven solutions across multiple RAN implementations.

Abstract:This demo paper presents a dApp-based real-time spectrum sharing scenario where a 5th generation (5G) base station implementing the NR stack adapts its transmission and reception strategies based on the incumbent priority users in the Citizen Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) band. The dApp is responsible for obtaining relevant measurements from the Next Generation Node Base (gNB), running the spectrum sensing inference, and configuring the gNB with a control action upon detecting the primary incumbent user transmissions. This approach is built on dApps, which extend the O-RAN framework to the real-time and user plane domains. Thus, it avoids the need of dedicated Spectrum Access Systems (SASs) in the CBRS band. The demonstration setup is based on the open-source 5G OpenAirInterface (OAI) framework, where we have implemented a dApp interfaced with a gNB and communicating with a Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) User Equipment (UE) in an over-the-air wireless environment. When an incumbent user has active transmission, the dApp will detect and inform the primary user presence to the gNB. The dApps will also enforce a control policy that adapts the scheduling and transmission policy of the Radio Access Network (RAN). This demo provides valuable insights into the potential of using dApp-based spectrum sensing with O-RAN architecture in next generation cellular networks.

Abstract:The Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) Alliance proposes an open architecture that disaggregates the RAN and supports executing custom control logic in near-real time from third-party applications, the xApps. Despite O-RAN's efforts, the creation of xApps remains a complex and time-consuming endeavor, aggravated by the sometimes fragmented, outdated, or deprecated documentation from the O-RAN Software Community (OSC). These challenges hinder academia and industry from developing and validating solutions and algorithms on O-RAN networks. This tutorial addresses this gap by providing the first comprehensive guide for developing xApps to manage the O-RAN ecosystem from theory to practice. We provide a thorough theoretical foundation of the O-RAN architecture and detail the functionality offered by Near Real-Time RAN Intelligent Controller (Near-RT RIC) components. We examine the xApp design and configuration. We explore the xApp lifecycle and demonstrate how to deploy and manage xApps on a Near-RT RIC. We address the xApps' interfaces and capabilities, accompanied by practical examples. We provide comprehensive details on how xApps can control the RAN. We discuss debugging strategies and good practices to aid the xApp developers in testing their xApps. Finally, we review the current landscape and open challenges for creating xApps.

Abstract:Open RAN (Radio Access Network) is revolutionizing the telecom space by introducing a framework based on the concepts of virtualization and openness. O-RAN fosters virtualized and disaggregated RAN components connected via open interfaces based on specifications by the O-RAN Alliance. The network is optimized using RAN intelligent controllers (RICs), which can take data-driven, closed-loop actions in a RAN built in a multi-vendor, interoperable environment. The goal of this paper is to provide insights and guidance about the paradigm shift brought by O-RAN in order to create open, softwarized, intelligent and optimized networks. We focus on the intelligence aspects by providing an in-depth view of the near-RT and non-RT RICs specified by the O-RAN Alliance, including the architecture and interfaces. A novel aspect of this paper is that we provide guidelines in terms of the artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) approaches and frameworks that are useful in the O-RAN context, and consider the applications (xApps and rApps) that can be created to programmatically and autonomously control and optimize the network through the RICs for V2X, Industry 5.0, and other very demanding service types. Additionally, we provide the E2E network slice orchestration architecture, and demonstrate the suitability of O-RAN for the requirements of the service types to be achieved. Finally, we discuss research challenges and opportunities and overview existing experimental research platforms that are used to innovate and drive advances in the O-RAN effort.

xApp-Level Conflict Mitigation in O-RAN, a Mobility Driven Energy Saving Case

Abstract:This paper investigates the emerging challenges of conflict detection and mitigation in Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN). Conflicts between xApps can arise that affect network performance and stability due to the disaggregated nature of O-RAN. This work provides a detailed theoretical framework of Extended Application (xApp)-level conflicts, i.e., direct, indirect, and implicit conflicts. Leveraging conflict graphs, we further highlight how conflicts impact Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and explore strategies for conflict detection using Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Quality of Service (QoS) thresholds. We evaluate the effectiveness of several mitigation strategies in a simulated environment with Mobility Robustness Optimization (MRO) and Energy Saving (ES) xApps and present experimental results showing comparisons among these strategies. The findings of this research provide significant insights for enhancing O-RAN deployments with flexible and efficient conflict management.

OREO: O-RAN intElligence Orchestration of xApp-based network services

Abstract:The Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture aims to support a plethora of network services, such as beam management and network slicing, through the use of third-party applications called xApps. To efficiently provide network services at the radio interface, it is thus essential that the deployment of the xApps is carefully orchestrated. In this paper, we introduce OREO, an O-RAN xApp orchestrator, designed to maximize the offered services. OREO's key idea is that services can share xApps whenever they correspond to semantically equivalent functions, and the xApp output is of sufficient quality to fulfill the service requirements. By leveraging a multi-layer graph model that captures all the system components, from services to xApps, OREO implements an algorithmic solution that selects the best service configuration, maximizes the number of shared xApps, and efficiently and dynamically allocates resources to them. Numerical results as well as experimental tests performed using our proof-of-concept implementation, demonstrate that OREO closely matches the optimum, obtained by solving an NP-hard problem. Further, it outperforms the state of the art, deploying up to 35% more services with an average of 30% fewer xApps and a similar reduction in the resource consumption.

Abstract:rApps and xApps need to be controlled and orchestrated well in the open radio access network (O-RAN) so that they can deliver a guaranteed network performance in a complex multi-vendor environment. This paper proposes a novel intent-driven intelligent control and orchestration scheme based on hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL). The proposed scheme can orchestrate multiple rApps or xApps according to the operator's intent of optimizing certain key performance indicators (KPIs), such as throughput, energy efficiency, and latency. Specifically, we propose a bi-level architecture with a meta-controller and a controller. The meta-controller provides the target performance in terms of KPIs, while the controller performs xApp orchestration at the lower level. Our simulation results show that the proposed HRL-based intent-driven xApp orchestration mechanism achieves 7.5% and 21.4% increase in average system throughput with respect to two baselines, i.e., a single xApp baseline and a non-machine learning-based algorithm, respectively. Similarly, 17.3% and 37.9% increase in energy efficiency are observed in comparison to the same baselines.

Abstract:The highly heterogeneous ecosystem of Next Generation (NextG) wireless communication systems calls for novel networking paradigms where functionalities and operations can be dynamically and optimally reconfigured in real time to adapt to changing traffic conditions and satisfy stringent and diverse Quality of Service (QoS) demands. Open Radio Access Network (RAN) technologies, and specifically those being standardized by the O-RAN Alliance, make it possible to integrate network intelligence into the once monolithic RAN via intelligent applications, namely, xApps and rApps. These applications enable flexible control of the network resources and functionalities, network management, and orchestration through data-driven control loops. Despite recent work demonstrating the effectiveness of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) in controlling O-RAN systems, how to design these solutions in a way that does not create conflicts and unfair resource allocation policies is still an open challenge. In this paper, we perform a comparative analysis where we dissect the impact of different DRL-based xApp designs on network performance. Specifically, we benchmark 12 different xApps that embed DRL agents trained using different reward functions, with different action spaces and with the ability to hierarchically control different network parameters. We prototype and evaluate these xApps on Colosseum, the world's largest O-RAN-compliant wireless network emulator with hardware-in-the-loop. We share the lessons learned and discuss our experimental results, which demonstrate how certain design choices deliver the highest performance while others might result in a competitive behavior between different classes of traffic with similar objectives.

Abstract:Open radio access network (O-RAN), driven by O-RAN Alliance is based on the disaggregation of the traditional RAN systems into radio unit (RU), distributed unit (DU) and central unit (CU) components. It provides a unique opportunity to reduce the cost of wireless network deployment by using open-source software, serving as a foundation for O-RAN compliant functions, and by utilizing low-cost, generic white-box hardware for radio components. Relying on the two core pillars of openness and intelligence , there has been a coordinated global effort from operators and equipment providers to enhance the RAN architecture and improve its performance through virtualized network elements and open interfaces that incorporate intelligence in RAN. With the increased complexity of 5G networks and the demand to fulfill requirements, intelligence is becoming a key factor for automated deployment, operation, and optimization of open wireless networks. The first thrust of this paper surveys the AI/ML architecture in O-RAN specifications, key discussion points and future standardization directions, respectively. In the second part, we introduce a proof-of-concept use case on AI-driven network optimization within the near real-time RAN intelligent controller (near-RT RIC) and non-real time RIC (non-RT RIC). In particular, we investigate the user admission control problem, led by a deep learning-based algorithm, implemented as an xApp for network performance enhancement. Extensive system-level simulations are performed with NS-3 LTE to assess the proposed admission control algorithm. Accordingly, the proposed dynamic algorithm shows a significant admission control performance improvement and flexibility, compared to existing admission control static techniques, while satisfying the stringent quality of service targets of admitted devices. Finally, the paper offers insightful conclusions and findings on the AI-based modeling, model inference performance, key performance challenges and future research directions, respectively.

Abstract:Network virtualization, software-defined infrastructure, and orchestration are pivotal elements in contemporary networks, yielding new vectors for optimization and novel capabilities. In line with these principles, O-RAN presents an avenue to bypass vendor lock-in, circumvent vertical configurations, enable network programmability, and facilitate integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) support. Moreover, modern container orchestration frameworks (e.g., Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift) simplify the way cellular base stations, as well as the newly introduced RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs), are deployed, managed, and orchestrated. While this enables cost reduction via infrastructure sharing, it also makes it more challenging to meet O-RAN control latency requirements, especially during peak resource utilization. To address this problem, we propose ScalO-RAN, a control framework rooted in optimization and designed as an O-RAN rApp that allocates and scales AI-based O-RAN applications (xApps, rApps, dApps) to: (i) abide by application-specific latency requirements, and (ii) monetize the shared infrastructure while reducing energy consumption. We prototype ScalO-RAN on an OpenShift cluster with base stations, RIC, and a set of AI-based xApps deployed as micro-services. We evaluate ScalO-RAN both numerically and experimentally. Our results show that ScalO-RAN can optimally allocate and distribute O-RAN applications within available computing nodes to accommodate even stringent latency requirements. More importantly, we show that scaling O-RAN applications is primarily a time-constrained problem rather than a resource-constrained one, where scaling policies must account for stringent inference time of AI applications, and not only how many resources they consume.

Abstract:Renewable energy harvesting (EH) technology is expected to be pervasively utilized in the next generation (5G) mobile networks to support sustainable network developments and operations. However, the renewable energy supply is inherently random and intermittent, which could lead to energy outage, energy overflow, quality of service (QoS) degradation, etc. Accordingly, how to enhance renewable energy sustainability is a critical issue for green networking. To this end, an energy-sustainable traffic steering framework is proposed in this article, where the traffic load is dynamically adjusted to match with energy distributions in both spatial and temporal domains by means of inter- and intra-tier steering, caching and pushing. Case studies are carried out, which demonstrate the proposed framework can reduce on-grid energy demand while satisfying QoS requirements. Research topics and challenges of energy-sustainable traffic steering are also discussed.

Challenges arise in two areas: the complexities of xApp development, particularly for advanced use cases like beam management, and issues in low-level software implementation within open platforms. Abstract:Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) has introduced an emerging RAN architecture that enables openness, intelligence, and automated control. The RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) provides the platform to design and deploy RAN controllers. xApps are the applications which will take this responsibility by leveraging machine learning (ML) algorithms and acting in near-real time. Despite the opportunities provided by this new architecture, the progress of practical artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions for network control and automation has been slow. This is mostly because of the lack of an endto-end solution for designing, deploying, and testing AI-based xApps fully executable in real O-RAN network. In this paper we introduce an end-to-end O-RAN design and evaluation procedure and provide a detailed discussion of developing a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based xApp by using two different RL approaches and considering the latest released O-RAN architecture and interfaces.

Energy Consumption Optimization in Radio Access Networks (ECO-RAN)

Abstract:In recent years, mobile network operators are showing interest in reducing energy consumption. Toward this goal, in cooperation with the Danish company 2Operate we have developed a stochastic simulation environment for mobile networks. Our simulator interacts with historical data from 2Operate and allow us to turn on and off network cells, replay traffic loads, etc. We have developed an optimization tool which is based on stochastic and distributed controllers computed by \uppaal. We have conducted experiments in our simulation tool. Experiments show that there is a potential to save up to 10\% of energy. We observe that for larger networks, there exists a larger potential for saving energy. Our simulator and \uppaal controllers, have been constructed in accordance to the 2Operate data and infrastructure. However, a main difference is that current equipment do not support updating schedulers on hourly bases. Nevertheless, new equipment e.g. new Huawei equipment do support changing schedulers on hourly basis. Therefore, integrating our solution in the production server of 2Operate is possible. However, rigorous testing in the production system is required.

Abstract:Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN) are expected to revolutionize the telecommunications industry with benefits like cost reduction, vendor diversity, and improved network performance through AI optimization. Supporting the O-RAN ALLIANCE's mission to achieve more intelligent, open, virtualized and fully interoperable mobile networks, O-RAN Open Testing and Integration Centers (OTICs) play a key role in accelerating the adoption of O-RAN specifications based on rigorous testing and validation. One theme in the recent O-RAN Global PlugFest Spring 2024 focused on demonstrating consistent and repeatable Open Fronthaul testing in multiple labs. To respond to this topic, in this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the testing methodologies and results for O-RAN Distributed Unit (O-DU) in O-RAN across two OTICs. We identify key differences in testing setups, share challenges encountered, and propose best practices for achieving repeatable and consistent testing results. Our findings highlight the impact of different deployment technologies and testing environments on performance and conformance testing outcomes, providing valuable insights for future O-RAN implementations.

Abstract:Recently, the concept of open radio access network (O-RAN) has been proposed, which aims to adopt intelligence and openness in the next generation radio access networks (RAN). It provides standardized interfaces and the ability to host network applications from third-party vendors by x-applications (xAPPs), which enables higher flexibility for network management. However, this may lead to conflicts in network function implementations, especially when these functions are implemented by different vendors. In this paper, we aim to mitigate the conflicts between xAPPs for near-real-time (near-RT) radio intelligent controller (RIC) of O-RAN. In particular, we propose a team learning algorithm to enhance the performance of the network by increasing cooperation between xAPPs. We compare the team learning approach with independent deep Q-learning where network functions individually optimize resources. Our simulations show that team learning has better network performance under various user mobility and traffic loads. With 6 Mbps traffic load and 20 m/s user movement speed, team learning achieves 8% higher throughput and 64.8% lower PDR.

Abstract:Open Radio Access Network (RAN) is an important architecture design shift for 5G and next generation telecommunications networks. With open RAN, mobile network operators would be able to mix and match multi-vendor RAN solutions as long as the solutions comply with open standards. O-RAN Alliance is the global leader in standardizing the open RAN architecture, where RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) is positioned centrally as the brain of a RAN to manage and optimize the RAN operations. Open-source projects play a key role in accelerating the adoption of open RAN architecture, especially the use of RIC. However, the fast pace of development and the lack of documentation in open-source projects create steep learning curve for beginners. In this paper, we first provide an overview of widely used open-source RIC projects and discuss their pros and cons. We then share our first-hand experience to use RIC in our campus 5G network that consists of commercial-grade RAN solutions. In particular, we developed a suite of three RAN control applications (i.e., energy efficiency, interference management, and predictive maintenance) on an open-source RIC, and we deploy and evaluate them on a commercial-grade 5G network in a university campus. For these RIC applications, we design and evaluate different ML models based on real-world data collected from our 5G network, which we publish together with this paper. Our experimental results show that AI-based RIC applications can achieve more than 90% of accuracy in inferring the situation of the RAN for each given task. Our energy-saving RIC application can reduce 65% of energy consumption of the RAN over a simulated period of one year. Our project also validates the feasibility to interfacing an open-source RIC with existing commercial-grade 5G solutions.

Abstract:O-RAN is radically shifting how cellular networks are designed, deployed and optimized through network programmability, disaggregation, and virtualization. Specifically, RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) can orchestrate and optimize the Radio Access Network (RAN) operations, allowing fine-grained control over the network. RICs provide new approaches and solutions for classical use cases such as on-demand traffic steering, anomaly detection, and Quality of Service (QoS) management, with an optimization that can target single User Equipments (UEs), slices, cells, or entire base stations. While this comes with the potential to enable intelligent, programmable RANs, there are still significant challenges to be faced, primarily related to data collection at scale, development and testing of custom control logic for the RICs, and availability of Open RAN simulation and experimental tools for the research and development communities. To address this, we introduce ns-O-RAN, a software integration between a real-world near-real-time RIC and an ns-3 simulated RAN which provides a platform for researchers and telco operators to build, test and integrate xApps. ns-O-RAN extends a popular Open RAN experimental framework (OpenRAN Gym) with simulation capabilities that enable the generation of realistic datasets without the need for experimental infrastructure. We implement it as a new open-source ns-3 module that uses the E2 interface to connect different simulated 5G base stations with the RIC, enabling the exchange of E2 messages and RAN KPMs to be consumed by standard xApps. Furthermore, we test ns-O-RAN with the OSC and OpenRAN Gym RICs, simplifying the onboarding from a test environment to production with real telecom hardware controlled without major reconfigurations required. ns-O-RAN is open source and publicly available, together with quick-start tutorials and documentation.
