Abstract:We consider a multilayered metamaterial composed of anisotropic layers with in-plane anisotropy axes periodically rotated with respect to each other. Due to the breaking of inversion symmetry, the structure develops an effective chirality. We derive the effective chirality tensor of the metamaterial describing both normal and oblique incidence scenarios. We also identify the arrangement of the layers maximizing chiral response for the fixed lattice period, wavelength and anisotropy of the layers.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about how to maximize the chiral response by specifically arranging layers of anisotropic materials. Specifically, the paper focuses on metamaterials composed of multi - layer materials with in - plane anisotropic axes, and these anisotropic axes are periodically rotated relative to each other. Due to the breaking of symmetry, such a structure develops effective chirality. The author derives the effective chiral tensor that describes the chiral response of such metamaterials in the case of normal incidence and oblique incidence, and explores how to arrange these layers to maximize the chiral response under the conditions of fixed lattice period, wavelength and anisotropy. ### Main research contents 1. **Derivation of chiral tensor**: - The author considers a multi - layer metamaterial composed of anisotropic layers, and the in - plane anisotropic axes of these layers are periodically rotated. - Through symmetry analysis, the effective chiral tensor is derived, which describes the chiral response in the cases of normal incidence and oblique incidence. 2. **Maximization of chiral response**: - Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, it is determined how to arrange these layers to maximize the chiral response under the conditions of fixed lattice period, wavelength and anisotropy. - The results show that continuously rotating the anisotropic axes (i.e., helical symmetry) can maximize the chiral response. 3. **Experimental verification**: - The accuracy of the effective medium model is verified by using the rigorous transfer matrix method. - The theoretical predictions are further verified by calculating the refractive index and polarization mode at different incident angles. ### Key formulas - **Chiral tensor**: \[ \hat{\kappa}=\text{diag}(\kappa_{11}, \kappa_{11}, \kappa_{33}) \] where \(\kappa_{11}\) and \(\kappa_{33}\) represent the chiral responses in the cases of normal incidence and oblique incidence respectively. - **Effective chirality**: \[ \kappa_{\text{eff}} = -\frac{4\Delta \epsilon^2 q^3}{b^3}\sum_{n = 1}^{\infty}\frac{\text{Im}(C_n S_n^*)}{n^3} \] where \(\Delta \epsilon\) is the dielectric constant difference of the anisotropic layers, \(q\) is the wave vector, \(b\) is the reciprocal lattice vector, and \(C_n\) and \(S_n\) are coefficients related to the rotation mode of the anisotropic axes. - **Effective dielectric constant**: \[ \epsilon_{\text{eff}}=\bar{\epsilon}+\frac{2q^2\Delta \epsilon^2}{b^2}\sum_{n = 1}^{\infty}\frac{|C_n|^2+|S_n|^2}{n^2} \] where \(\bar{\epsilon}\) is the average dielectric constant. ### Conclusion Through theoretical analysis and experimental verification, the paper successfully derives the effective chiral tensor that describes the chiral response of multi - layer anisotropic metamaterials, and determines how to arrange these layers to maximize the chiral response under the conditions of fixed lattice period, wavelength and anisotropy. The research results are of great significance for the design and application of chiral metamaterials.
