Abstract:We investigate the integer solutions of Diophantine equations related to Lehmer's totient conjecture. We give an algorithm that computes all nontrivial positive spoof Lehmer factorizations with a fixed number of bases $r$, and enumerate all nontrivial positive spoof Lehmer factorizations with 6 or fewer factors.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:We prove near-optimal upper bounds for the odd moments of the distribution of coprime residues in short intervals, confirming a conjecture of Montgomery and Vaughan. As an application we prove near-optimal upper bounds for the average of the refined singular series in the Hardy-Littlewood conjectures concerning the number of prime $k$-tuples for $k$ odd. The main new ingredient is a near-optimal upper bound for the number of solutions to $\sum_{1\leq i\leq k}\frac{a_i}{q_i}\in \mathbb{Z}$ when $k$ is odd, with $(a_i,q_i)=1$ and restrictions on the size of the numerators and denominators, that is of independent interest.

Abstract:F. Luca proved for any fixed rational number $\alpha>0$ that the Diophantine equations of the form $\alpha\,m!=f(n!)$, where $f$ is either the Euler function or the divisor sum function or the function counting the number of divisors, have only finitely many integer solutions $(m,n)$. In this paper we generalize the mentioned result and show that Diophantine equations of the form $\alpha\,m_1!\cdots m_r!=f(n!)$ have finitely many integer solutions, too. In addition, we do so by including the case $f$ is the sum of $k$\textsuperscript{th} powers of divisors function. Moreover, we observe that the same holds by replacing some of the factorials with certain examples of Bhargava factorials.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose two improved theorems for addressing generalized bivariate integer equations using the lattice-based method. We examine the application of these theorems to the problem of factoring general RSA (Rivest–Shamir–Adleman) moduli of the form where and are prime numbers. These moduli, which are commonly used in the RSA cryptosystem and its variants, have previously been subjected to attacks primarily through the solution of univariate modular equations. In contrast, we investigate the possibility of factoring using leaked most significant bits (MSBs) or least significant bits (LSBs) of the prime numbers by solving generalized bivariate integer equations. We determine the minimum amount of known bits required for implementing the proposed factoring attacks and establish a unifying attack strategy. Furthermore, our results are verified through numerical computer experiments.

Divisors in Residue Classes Revisited

Abstract:In 1984, H. W. Lenstra described an algorithm finding divisors of $N$ congruent to $r \mod S$. When $S^3 > N$, this algorithm runs in polynomial time and hence factors $N$ in time $N^{1/3+o(1)}$. Lenstra's algorithm relies on a sign change in a constructed sequence and so cannot be adapted directly to larger euclidean number rings. We present a new method that generalizes to a larger class of euclidean rings and the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. The algorithm is implemented and timed confirming its polynomial run time.

Integer Polynomial Factorization by Recombination of Real Factors: Re-evaluating an Old Technique in Modern Era

Abstract:Polynomial factorization over $ZZ$ is of great historical and practical importance. Currently, the standard technique is to factor the polynomial over finite fields first and then to lift to integers. Factorization over finite fields can be done in polynomial time using Berlekamp or Cantor-Zassenhaus algorithms. Lifting from the finite field to $ZZ$ requires a combinatorial algorithm. The van Hoeij algorithm casts the combinatorial problem as a knapsack-equivalent problem, which is then solved using lattice-reduction (the LLL algorithm) in polynomial time, which is implemented in many computer algebra systems (CAS). In this paper, we revisit the old idea of starting with factorization over $RR$ instead of a finite field, followed by recombination of the resulting linear and quadratic factors. We transform the problem into an integer subset sum problem, which is then solved using the Horowizt-Sinha algorithm. This algorithm can factor a random integer polynomial of degree $d$ in a time complexity of $O(2^(d slash 4))$. While the resulting algorithm is exponential, consistent with the integer subset sum problem being in NP, it has a few advantages. First, it is simple and easy to implement. Second, it is almost embarrassingly parallelizable. We demonstrate this by implementing the algorithm in a Graphic Processing Unit (GPU). The resulting code can factor a degree 100 polynomial is a few tenths of a second, comparable to some standard CAS. This shows that it is possible to use current hardware, especially massively parallel systems like GPU, to the benefit of symbolic algebra.

Abstract: Let $D$ be a negative integer congruent to $0$ or $1\bmod{4}$ and $\mathcal{O}=\mathcal{O}_D$ be the corresponding order of $ K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$. The Hilbert class polynomial $H_D(x)$ is the minimal polynomial of the $j$-invariant $ j_D=j(\mathbb{C}/\mathcal{O})$ of $\mathcal{O}$ over $K$. Let $n_D=(\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{Q}( j_D)}:\mathbb{Z}[ j_D])$ denote the index of $\mathbb{Z}[ j_D]$ in the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}(j_D)$. Suppose $p$ is any prime. We completely determine the factorization of $H_D(x)$ in $\mathbb{F}_p[x]$ if either $p\nmid n_D$ or $p\nmid D$ is inert in $K$ and the $p$-adic valuation $v_p(n_D)\leq 3$. As an application, we analyze the key space of Oriented Supersingular Isogeny Diffie-Hellman (OSIDH) protocol proposed by Col\`o and Kohel in 2019 which is the roots set of the Hilbert class polynomial in $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$.

Abstract:We combine transcendental methods and the modular approaches to the conjecture to show that the largest prime factor of is at least of size where is the -th iterate of the logarithm. This gives a substantial improvement on the best available estimates, which are essentially of size going back to work of Chowla in 1934. Using the same ideas, we also obtain significant progress on subexpoential bounds for the conjecture, which in a case gives the first improvement on a result by Stewart and Yu dating back over two decades. Central to our approach is the connection between Shimura curves and the conjecture developed by the author.

Abstract:The conjecture of Lehmer is proved to be true. The proof mainly relies upon: (i) the properties of the Parry Upper functions $f_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ associated with the dynamical zeta functions $\zeta_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ of the Rényi--Parry arithmetical dynamical systems, for $\alpha$ an algebraic integer $\alpha$ of house "$house(\alpha)$" greater than 1, (ii) the discovery of lenticuli of poles of $\zeta_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ which uniformly equidistribute at the limit on a limit "lenticular" arc of the unit circle, when $house(\alpha)$ tends to $1^+$, giving rise to a continuous lenticular minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(house(\alpha))$ of the Mahler measure ${\rm M}(\alpha)$, (iii) the Poincaré asymptotic expansions of these poles and of this minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(house(\alpha))$ as a function of the dynamical degree. With the same arguments the conjecture of Schinzel-Zassenhaus is proved to be true. An inequality improving those of Dobrowolski and Voutier ones is obtained. The set of Salem numbers is shown to be bounded from below by the Perron number $\theta_{31}^{-1} = 1.08545\ldots$, dominant root of the trinomial $-1 - z^{30} + z^{31}$. Whether Lehmer's number is the smallest Salem number remains open. A lower bound for the Weil height of nonzero totally real algebraic numbers, $\neq \pm 1$, is obtained (Bogomolov property). For sequences of algebraic integers of Mahler measure smaller than the smallest Pisot number, whose houses have a dynamical degree tending to infinity, the Galois orbit measures of conjugates are proved to converge towards the Haar measure on $|z|=1$ (limit equidistribution).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the equations involving Euler's totient function $\phi$ and Lucas type sequences. In particular, we prove that the equation $\phi (x^m-y^m)=x^n-y^n$ has no solutions in positive integers $x, y, m, n$ except for the trivial solutions $(x, y, m , n)=(a+1, a, 1, 1)$, where $a$ is a positive integer, and the equation $\phi ((x^m-y^m)/(x-y))=(x^n-y^n)/(x-y)$ has no solutions in positive integers $x, y, m, n$ except for the trivial solutions $(x, y, m , n)=(a, b, 1, 1)$, where $a, b$ are integers with $a>b\ge 1$.

Abstract:We pose 100 new conjectures on representations involving primes or related things, which might interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Below are five typical examples: (i) For any positive integer n, there exists $k\in \{0,\ldots ,n\}$ such that $n+k$ and $n+k^2$ are both prime. (ii) Each integer $n>1$ can be written as $x+y$ with $x,y\in \{1,2,3,\ldots \}$ such that $x+ny$ and $x^2+ny^2$ are both prime. (iii) For any rational number $r>0$, there are distinct primes $q_1,\ldots ,q_k$ with $r=\sum _{j=1}^k1/(q_j-1)$. (iv) Every $n=4,5,\ldots $ can be written as $p+q$, where p is a prime with $p-1$ and $p+1$ both practical, and q is either prime or practical. (v) Any positive rational number can be written as m/n, where m and n are positive integers with $p_m+p_n$ a square (or $\pi (m)\pi (n)$ a positive square), $p_k$ is the kth prime and $\pi (x)$ is the prime-counting function.

Abstract:We construct several new families of non-congruent numbers with arbitrarily many prime factors congruent to 3 modulo 8. Our results generalize the work of Reinholz, Spearman and Yang [14]. Our methods are based on Monsky's formula on the 2-Selmer rank of the congruent elliptic curve and the recent results by Tian, Yuan and Zhang on the congruent number problem.
A Combinatorial Approach to Frobenius Numbers of Some Special Sequences (Complete Version)

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the greatest integer not belonging to the set $\big\{ \sum_{i=1}^na_ix_i\ |x_i\in \mathbb{N}\big\}$. The general Frobenius problem includes the determination of $g(A)$ and the related Sylvester number $n(A)$ and Sylvester sum $s(A)$. We present a new approach to the Frobenius problem. Basically, we transform the problem into an easier optimization problem. If the new problem can be solved explicitly, then we will be able to obtain a formula of $g(A)$. We illustrate the idea by giving concise proof of some existing formulas and finding some interesting new formulas of $g(A), n(A), s(A)$. Moreover, we find that MacMahon's partition analysis applies to give a new way of calculating $n(A), s(A)$ by using a rational function representation of a polynomial determined by $A$.

Abstract:In this article we show that the Czech mathematician Vaclav Simerka discovered the factorization of (10^17-1)/9 using a method based on the class group of binary quadratic forms more than 120 years before Shanks and Schnorr developed similar algorithms. Simerka also gave the first examples of what later became known as Carmichael numbers.

Integers expressible as the sum of two rational cubes

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

Abstract:This article demonstrates that every sufficiently large odd integer can be expressed as the sum of one square of a prime, six cubes of primes, and 23 powers of two. This finding represents an improvement on the previous results of Sinnadurai in 1965 and Hooley in 1981.

Abstract:We study the Frobenius problem: given relatively prime positive integers a_1,...,a_d, find the largest value of t (the Frobenius number g(a_1,...,a_d)) such that m_1 a_1 + ... m_d a_d = t has no solution in nonnegative integers m_1,...,m_d. We introduce a method to compute upper bounds for g(a_1,a_2,a_3), which seem to grow considerably slower than previously known bounds. Our computations are based on a formula for the restricted partition function, which involves Dedekind-Rademacher sums, and the reciprocity law for these sums.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the following result: Let a and bbe large integers, satisfying that (a,b)＝1. If Diophantine equation ax+by=z has solutions: |x0|＝O(log2ab),|y0|=O(log2ab),|z0|＝O(log2ab), then there is a polynomial-time algorithm that factors a large integern = ab, which runs in O(log26n)time. Based on the proposed algorithm, we can factor easily n＝1600000000000000229500000000000003170601. In fact, we have n=20000000000000002559 x 80000000000000001239, where 20000000000000002559 and 80000000000000001239 are all safe primes. Our result also shows that some safe primes are not safe.

For every positive integer a which is coprime with q we denote by a_c the unique integer satisfying 1≤a_c≤q and aa_c≡c( mod q) . Put L(q)={a∈Z^+: (a,q)=1, n 0.1mm| a+a_c}. The elements of L ( q ) are called D.H. Lehmer numbers.
