Abstract:Let $(-A,B,C)$ be a continuous time linear system with state space a separable complex Hilbert space $H$, where $-A$ generates a strongly continuous contraction semigroup $(e^{-tA})_{t\geq 0}$ on $H$, and $\phi (t)=Ce^{-tA}B$ is the impulse response function. Associated to such a system is a Hankel integral operator $\Gamma_\phi$ acting on $L^2((0, \infty ); C)$ and a Schr{ö}dinger operator whose potential is found via a Fredholm determinant by the Faddeev-Dyson formula. Fredholm determinants of products of Hankel operators also play an important role in the Tracy and Widom's theory of matrix models and asymptotic eigenvalue distributions of random matrices. This paper provide formulas for the Fredholm determinants which arise thus, and determines consequent properties of the associated differential operators. We prove a spectral theorem for self-adjoint linear systems that have scalar input and output: the entries of Kodaira's characteristic matrix are given explicitly with formulas involving the infinitesimal Darboux addition for $(-A,B,C)$. Under suitable conditions on $(-A,B,C)$ we give an explicit version of Burchnall-Chaundy's theorem, showing that the algebra generated by an associated family of differential operators is isomorphic to an algebra of functions on a particular hyperelliptic curve.
Spectral Theory
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the spectral theory of continuous - time linear systems \((-A, B, C)\) and its relationship with the Fredholm determinant. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to construct the Hankel integral operator \(\Gamma_\phi\) and the Schrödinger operator through the impulse response function \(\phi(t) = Ce^{-tA}B\) of the linear system, and study the Fredholm determinants of these operators. ### Main problems 1. **Calculation of the Fredholm determinant**: - The paper provides a method to calculate the Fredholm determinant related to the linear system. In particular, through the impulse response function \(\phi(t)\), a tau function \(\tau(x)=\det(I + \Gamma_{\phi(x)})\) can be defined, where \(\phi(x)(t)=\phi(t + 2x)\). 2. **Potential recovery of the Schrödinger equation**: - Faddeev and Dyson proposed a method by which the potential \(u(x)\) in the Schrödinger equation can be recovered from a given scattering function \(\phi\). The specific formula is \(u(x)=-2\frac{d^{2}}{dx^{2}}\log\tau(x)\). 3. **Algebraic structure of the linear system**: - The paper introduces a differential ring \(E\), which is generally non - commutative and non - self - adjoint, but provides a method for calculating the Fredholm determinant of the Hankel integral operator. In addition, the algebraic properties of these operators and the integrability of related equations are also discussed. 4. **Spectral theory of the Howland operator**: - The paper examines a special class of linear systems \((-A, B, C)\) that originate from the Howland operator. The spectral theory of these systems is closely related to the spectral theories of the Hankel integral operator and the Schrödinger operator. 5. **Darboux transformation**: - Through the Darboux transformation, the paper studies the changes in the spectral curve and potential of the linear system. Specifically, through Darboux multiplication, a new potential \(u\mapsto u - 2\frac{d^{2}}{dx^{2}}\log\psi_\zeta(x)\) can be obtained, where \(\psi_\zeta\) is a positive solution of the Schrödinger equation. ### Key formulas - **tau function**: \[ \tau(x)=\det(I + \Gamma_{\phi(x)}) \] - **Potential recovery formula**: \[ u(x)=-2\frac{d^{2}}{dx^{2}}\log\tau(x) \] - **Lyapunov equation**: \[ \frac{dR_x}{dx}=-AR_x - R_xA,\quad\left(\frac{dR_x}{dx}\right)_{x = 0}=-BC \] ### Conclusion By analyzing in detail the impulse response function of the linear system and the related Hankel integral operator, the paper provides a method for calculating the Fredholm determinant and explores the applications of these operators in the random matrix theory and the spectral theory of the Schrödinger operator. In addition, the paper also studies the changes in the spectral curve and potential of the linear system through the Darboux transformation, providing a new perspective for understanding the algebraic structure of these systems.
