Abstract:A theory of Poincaré series is developed for Lobachevsky space of arbitrary dimension. For a general non-uniform lattice a Selberg-Kloosterman zeta function is introduced. It has meromorphic continuation to the plane with poles at the corresponding automorphic spectrum. When the lattice is a unit group of a rational quadratic form, the Selberg-Kloosterman zeta function is computed explicitly in terms of exponential sums. In this way a non-trivial Ramanujan-like bound analogous to “Selberg’s 3/16 bound” is proved in general.

Abstract:We provide here a counter-example to the second inequality of Corollary (19.10) in the Clay Institute Monograph by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://J.Morgan" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://G.Tian" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> entitled "Ricci Flow and the Poincare Conjecture". We had announced the existence of this counter-example in our paper "Five Gaps in Mathematics", Advanced Non-linear Studies, vol 15, No. 2, (2015). We make the details available here. <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://J.Morgan" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://G.Tian" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> have recently (arXiv/math/DG:<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1512.00699" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1512.00699">1512.00699</a>, (2015)) published a correction to their arguments in the monograph. Abstract:We exhibit closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $10$ and $17$ such that the multiplicity of the first nonzero eigenvalue of their Laplacian is larger than the maximum conjectured by Yves Colin de Verdière in 1986. In order to determine these multiplicities, we apply the twisted Selberg trace formula to the representations induced by the isometry groups of these surfaces on corresponding triangle groups.

Abstract:It is well known that the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture is true for arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay varieties, projective curves, smooth surfaces, smooth threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^5$, and toric varieties of codimension two. After J. McCullough and I. Peeva constructed counterexamples in 2018, it has been an interesting question to find the categories such that the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture holds. So far, surface counterexamples have not been found while counterexamples of any dimension greater or equal to 3 are known. In this paper, we construct counterexamples to the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture for projective surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$ and investigate projective invariants, cohomological properties, and geometric properties. The counterexamples are constructed via binomial rational maps between projective spaces.

Abstract:This article explains how to construct immersed Lagrangian submanifolds in C^2 that are asymptotic at large distance from the origin to a given braid in the 3-sphere. The self-intersections of the Lagrangians are related to the crossings of the braid. These Lagrangians are then used to construct immersed Lagrangians in the vector bundle O(-1) oplus O(-1) over the Riemann sphere which are asymptotic at large distance from the zero section to braids.

Slow-growing counterexamples to the strong Eremenko Conjecture

Abstract:Let $f\colon\mathbb{C} \to\mathbb{C}$ be a transcendental entire function. In 1989, Eremenko asked the following question concerning the set $I(f)$ of points that tend to infinity under iteration: can every point of $I(f)$ be joined to $\infty$ by a curve in $I(f)$? This is known as the strong Eremenko conjecture and was disproved in 2011 by Rottenfußer, Rückert, Rempe and Schleicher. The function has relatively small infinite order: it can be chosen such that $\log \log \,\lvert f(z)\rvert = (\log \lvert z\rvert)^{1+o(1)}$ as $f(z)\to \infty$. Moreover, $f$ belongs to the \emph{Eremenko--Lyubich class $\mathcal{B}$}. Rottenfußer et al also show that the strong Eremenko conjecture does hold for any $f\in\mathcal{B}$ of finite order. We consider how slow a counterexample $f\in\mathcal{B}$ can grow. Suppose that $\Theta\colon [t_0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)$ satisfies $\Theta(t) \to 0$ and \[ (\log t)^{-\beta \Theta(\log t)}/\Theta(t) \to 0 \quad\text{ as $t\to \infty$} \] for some $0<\beta<1$, along with a certain regularity assumption. Then there exists a counterexample $f\in\mathcal{B}$ as above such that \[ \log \log \vert f(z)\vert = O ( (\log \vert z \vert)^{1 + \Theta( \log \vert z \vert )}) \] as $\vert f(z)\vert \to\infty$. The hypotheses are satisfied, in particular, for $\Theta(t) = 1/(\log \log t)^{\alpha}$, for any $\alpha>0$.

Abstract:We found a counterexample to the conjecture of Karvatskyi and Pratsiovytyi concerning the topological type of the achievement set of an intermediate series (Proceedings of the International Geometry Center, 2023. <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.15673/pigc.v16i3.2519" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>). This conjecture is based on an analogy with the squeeze theorem from calculus. We also proposed an improved version of the conjecture, which this counterexample does not refute.

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2011.06562" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.06562">arXiv:2011.06562</a>, the first author and Otto van Koert proved a generalized version of the classical Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem, for Liouville domains of any dimension. In this article, we prove a relative version for Lagrangians with Legendrian boundary. This gives interior chords of arbitrary large length, provided the twist condition introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2011.06562" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2011.06562">arXiv:2011.06562</a> is satisfied. The motivation comes from finding spatial consecutive collision orbits of arbitrary large length in the spatial circular restricted three-body problem, which are relevant for gravitational assist in the context of orbital mechanics. This is an application of a local version of wrapped Floer homology, which we introduce as the open string analogue of local Floer homology for closed strings.

Abstract:Suppose $f:S\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^1$ is a surface fibration of genus $g$ with $3$ singular fibers and two of the fibers are semistable. In 1998, K. V. Nguyen conjectured that such kind of fibration does not exist for $g\ge2$. But in 2013, C. Gong, X. Lu, and S.-L. Tan found a counterexample to Nguyen's conjecture for $g=2$. Note that such kind of fibration shows strong arithmetic properties, and as such the counterexamples are important, but rare in fact. In this paper, a new counterexample to Nguyen's conjecture for $g=2$ is constructed.

Abstract:In this note, a counter-example of the Poisson equation with f belonging to the Orlicz space LA(Ω) and A(t)=tσ(log(e+t))q(σ≥1,q>0) is constructed. Our example shows that the boundedness of the solution is not true under the critical condition q=n2−1 , which gives rise to the answer to the problem unsolved in [(Cianchi, 1999), Theorem 5] and [(Cruz-Uribe and Rodney, 2021), Example 1.10].

Abstract:The purpose of this note is twofold: firstly, it intends to bring to light an apparently unknown property of the product of the extreme zeros of Laguerre polynomials, which in a very particular case leads to a twenty-year-old conjecture for Hermite polynomials posed by Gazeau, Josse-Michaux, and Moncea while developing numerical methods in quantum mechanics; and secondly to progress towards the solution of this problem as an application of a parametric eigenvalue problem.
