Abstract:Business Process Management (BPM) is mostly centered around finding technical solutions. Nudging is an approach from psychology and behavioral economics to guide people's behavior. In this paper, we show how nudging can be integrated into the different phases of the BPM lifecycle. Further, we outline how nudging can be an alternative strategy for more sustainable business processes. We show how the integration of nudging offers significant opportunities for process mining and business process management in general to be more human-centric. We also discuss challenges that come with the adoption of nudging.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to solve the problem in business process management (BPM) that it relies too much on technical solutions while ignoring human behavior and environmental sustainability. Specifically, the author proposes to introduce the concept of "nudging" from psychology and behavioral economics into different life - cycle stages of BPM to guide employees and stakeholders to adopt more environmentally - friendly behaviors, thus achieving more sustainable business processes. #### Main problems: 1. **Limitations of technology - orientation**: Existing BPM research and technology mainly focus on how to optimize business processes through technical means, but ignore human behavioral factors. This leads to the fact that even with excellent technical solutions, they may be ineffective due to lack of implementation. 2. **Neglect of environmental impact**: Traditional BPM often ignores the environmental impact of business processes while pursuing efficiency and cost optimization. Especially in the context of climate change, this is particularly important. 3. **Cultural and behavioral change**: How to cultivate a green culture and the awareness of sustainable development within an organization, so that employees and stakeholders voluntarily adopt environmentally - friendly behaviors, is one of the challenges currently faced by BPM. #### Solutions: - **Introduce the "nudging" mechanism**: Design subtle behavior - guiding strategies (such as default options, social norms, framing effects, etc.) to guide people to make more environmentally - friendly choices without coercion. - **Integrate into the BPM life - cycle**: Incorporate nudging strategies into each stage of BPM (identification, discovery, analysis, redesign, implementation, monitoring) to ensure that sustainability can be considered from process design to execution. - **Promote green BPM**: Support green BPM (Green BPM) through nudging, that is, specifically consider environmental impacts in business processes, thereby improving the environmental performance of the organization. ### Overview of the paper structure: 1. **Introduction**: Introduce the goals of BPM and the challenges it faces, especially problems in terms of human behavior and environmental impacts. 2. **Background**: Explain what nudging is and its role in decision - making, and explore its potential contribution to green BPM. 3. **Combination of nudging and the BPM life - cycle**: Describe in detail how to apply nudging strategies at each stage of BPM. 4. **Discussion of impacts**: Discuss the opportunities and challenges of nudging in green BPM, including ethical considerations. 5. **Conclusion**: Summarize the full text and look forward to future research directions. Through these methods, the author hopes to further enhance the sustainability and environmental - friendliness of business processes on the basis of technical optimization while taking into account the complexity of human behavior.
