Abstract:We consider a large family of theories of equivalence relations, each with finitely many classes, and assuming the existence of an $\omega$-Erdos cardinal, we determine which of these theories are Borel complete. We develop machinery, including {\em forbidding nested sequences} which implies a tight upper bound on Borel complexity, and {\em admitting cross-cutting absolutely indiscernible sets} which in our context implies Borel completeness. In the Appendix we classify the reducts of theories of refining equivalence relations, possibly with infinite splitting.

Abstract:We find a strong separation between two natural families of simple rank one theories in Keisler's order: the theories $T_\mathfrak{m}$ reflecting graph sequences, which witness that Keisler's order has the maximum number of classes, and the theories $T_{n,k}$, which are the higher-order analogues of the triangle-free random graph. The proof involves building Boolean algebras and ultrafilters "by hand" to satisfy certain model theoretically meaningful chain conditions. This may be seen as advancing a line of work going back through Kunen's construction of good ultrafilters in ZFC using families of independent functions. We conclude with a theorem on flexible ultrafilters, and open questions.

Abstract:We introduce a general method for showing under weak forcing axioms that reduced products of countable models of a theory $T$ have as few automorphisms as possible. We show that such forcing axioms imply that reduced products of countably infinite or finite fields, linear orders, trees, or random graphs have only trivial automorphisms. We also show that Todorčević's Open Colouring Axiom, $\mathsf{OCA}_{\mathrm{T}}$, implies that all automorphisms of $\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N})/{\mathrm{Fin}}$ are trivial.

Abstract:We introduce a new type of equivalence between blocks of finite group algebras called a strong isotypy. A strong isotypy is equivalent to a $p$-permutation equivalence and restricts to an isotypy in the sense of Broué. To prove these results we first establish that the group $T_{\mathcal{O}}(B)$ of trivial source $B$-modules, where $B$ is a block of a finite group algebra, is isomorphic to groups of ``coherent character tuples.'' This provides a refinement of work by Boltje and Carman which characterizes the ring $T_{\mathcal{O}}(G)$ of trivial source $\mathcal{O}G$-modules, where $G$ is a finite group, in terms of coherent character tuples.

Abstract:A trivial automorphism of the Boolean algebra $\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin}$ is an automorphism induced by the action of some function $\mathbb N \rightarrow \mathbb N$. In models of forcing axioms all automorphisms are trivial, and therefore two trivial automorphisms are conjugate if and only if they have the same (modulo finite) cycle structure. We show that the Continuum Hypothesis implies that two trivial automorphisms are conjugate if and only if there are neither first-order obstructions nor index obstructions for their conjugacy. This is equivalent to given trivial automorphisms being conugate in some forcing extension of the universe. To each automorphism $\alpha$ of $\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin}$ we associate the first-order structure $\mathfrak{A}_\alpha=(\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin},\alpha)$ and compute the existential theories of these structures. These results are applied to resolve a question of Braga, Farah, and Vignati and prove that there are coarse metric spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that the isomorphism between their uniform Roe coronas is independent from $\mathsf{ZFC}$.

Borel Complexity and the Schröder-Bernstein Property

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant of Borel reducibility, namely the notion of thickness; this associates to every sentence $\Phi$ of $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1 \omega}$ and to every cardinal $\lambda$, the thickness $\tau(\Phi, \lambda)$ of $\Phi$ at $\lambda$. As applications, we show that all the Friedman-Stanley jumps of torsion abelian groups are non-Borel complete. We also show that under the existence of large cardinals, if $\Phi$ is a sentence of $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1 \omega}$ with the Schröder-Bernstein property (that is, whenever two countable models of $\Phi$ are biembeddable, then they are isomorphic), then $\Phi$ is not Borel complete.

Abstract:We show that the category of countable Borel equivalence relations (CBERs) is dually equivalent to the category of countable $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1\omega}$ theories which admit a one-sorted interpretation of a particular theory we call $\mathcal{T}_\mathsf{LN} \sqcup \mathcal{T}_\mathsf{sep}$ that witnesses embeddability into $2^\mathbb{N}$ and the Lusin--Novikov uniformization theorem. This allows problems about Borel combinatorial structures on CBERs to be translated into syntactic definability problems in $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1\omega}$, modulo the extra structure provided by $\mathcal{T}_\mathsf{LN} \sqcup \mathcal{T}_\mathsf{sep}$, thereby formalizing a folklore intuition in locally countable Borel combinatorics. We illustrate this with a catalogue of the precise interpretability relations between several standard classes of structures commonly used in Borel combinatorics, such as Feldman--Moore $\omega$-colorings and the Slaman--Steel marker lemma. We also generalize this correspondence to locally countable Borel groupoids and theories interpreting $\mathcal{T}_\mathsf{LN}$, which admit a characterization analogous to that of Hjorth--Kechris for essentially countable isomorphism relations.

Abstract:We investigate the descriptive complexity of the set of models of first-order theories. Using classical results of Knight and Solovay, we give a sharp condition for complete theories to have a $\boldsymbol\Pi_\omega^0$-complete set of models. We also give sharp conditions for theories to have a $\boldsymbol\Pi^0_n$-complete set of models. Finally, we determine the Turing degrees needed to witness the completeness.

Abstract:We prove that if (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are countable models of the theory \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} such that \mathrm{I}\Sigma_{1}(A) fails for some A \in \mathcal{X}\cap \mathcal{Y} , then (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are isomorphic. As a consequence, the analytic hierarchy collapses to \Delta^{1}_{1} provably in \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} , and \mathrm{WKL} is the strongest \Pi^{1}_{2} statement that is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} . Applying our results to the \Delta^{0}_{n} -definable sets in models of \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} that also satisfy an appropriate relativization of weak König’s lemma, we prove that for each n \ge 1 , the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is computably enumerable. In contrast, we prove that the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is \Pi_{2} -complete. This answers a question of Towsner. We also show that \mathrm{RCA}_{0} + \mathrm{RT}^{2}_{2} is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} if and only if it is conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} with respect to \forall \Pi^{0}_{5} sentences.

Abstract:This paper belongs to the research on the limit of the first incompleteness theorem. Effectively inseparable theories (EI) can be viewed as an effective version of essentially undecidable theories (EU), and EI is stronger than EU. We examine the question: are there minimal effectively inseparable theories with respect to interpretability. We propose tEI, the theory version of EI. We first prove that there are no minimal tEI theories with respect to interpretability (i.e., for any tEI theory $T$, we can effectively find a theory which is tEI and strictly weaker than $T$ with respect to interpretability). By a theorem due to Marian B. Pour-EI, we have tEI is equivalent with EI. Thus, there are no minimal EI theories with respect to interpretability. Also we prove that there are no minimal finitely axiomatizable EI theories with respect to interpretability.

Clones of Borel Boolean Functions

Abstract:We study the lattice of all Borel clones on $2 = \{0,1\}$: classes of Borel functions $f : 2^n \to 2$, $n \le \omega$, which are closed under composition and include all projections. This is a natural extension to countable arities of Post's 1941 classification of all clones of finitary Boolean functions. Every Borel clone restricts to a finitary clone, yielding a "projection" from the lattice of all Borel clones to Post's lattice. It is well-known that each finitary clone of affine mod 2 functions admits a unique extension to a Borel clone. We show that over each finitary clone containing either both $\wedge, \vee$, or the 2-out-of-3 median operation, there lie at least 2 but only finitely many Borel clones. Over the remaining clones in Post's lattice, we give only a partial classification of the Borel extensions, and present some evidence that the full structure may be quite complicated.

Abstract:Let $T$ be the theory of an o-minimal field, and $T_{\mathrm{convex}}$ the theory of its expansion by a predicate $\mathcal{O}$ for a non-trivial $T$-convex valuation ring. For $\lambda$ an uncountable cardinal, say that a unary type $p(x)$ over a model of $T_{\mathrm{convex}}$ is \emph{$\lambda$-bounded weakly immediate} if its cut is defined by an empty intersection of fewer than $\lambda$ many nested valuation balls. Call an elementary extension \emph{$\lambda$-bounded wim-constructible} if it is obtained as a transfinite composition of extensions each generated by one element whose type is $\lambda$-bounded weakly immediate. I show that $\lambda$-bounded wim-constructible extensions do not extend the residue-field sort and that any two wim-constructible extensions can be amalgamated in an extension which is again $\lambda$-bounded wim-constructible over both. A consequence is that given an uncountable cardinal $\lambda$, every model of $T_{\mathrm{convex}}$ has a unique-up-to-non-unique-isomorphism $\lambda$-spherically complete $\lambda$-bounded wim-constructible extension. We call this extension the $T$-$\lambda$-spherical completion. When $T$ is power bounded wim-constructible extensions are just the immediate extensions. I discuss the example of power bounded theories expanded by $\exp$.

Shelah's Main Gap and the generalized Borel-reducibility

Abstract:We answer one of the main questions in generalized descriptive set theory, the Friedman-Hyttinen-Kulikov conjecture on the Borel reducibility of the Main Gap. We show a correlation between Shelah's Main Gap and generalized Borel reducibility notions of complexity. For any $\kappa$ satisfying $\kappa=\lambda^+=2^\lambda$ and $2^{\mathfrak{c}}\leq\lambda=\lambda^{\omega_1}$, we show that if $T$ is a classifiable theory and $T'$ is a non-classifiable theory, then the isomorphism of models of $T'$ is strictly above the isomorphism of models of $T$ with respect to Borel-reducibility. We also show that the following can be forced: for any countable first-order theory in a countable vocabulary, $T$, the isomorphism of models of $T$ is either analytic co-analytic, or analytically-complete.

Abstract:Minimal BCOV theory is a classical field theory which describes a subclass of deformations of the category of perfect complexes on a Calabi-Yau variety. We compute minimal models for $L_\infty$-algebras describing minimal BCOV theory and its variants on flat space and find that they give certain $L_\infty$-extensions of the infinite-dimensional simple Lie superalgebra $\operatorname{SHO}(d|d)$. We apply this computation to compare an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ action on an odd two-dimensional central extension of $\operatorname{SHO}(3|3)$ first discovered by Kac to an action of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ on a variant of minimal BCOV theory previously found by the authors.

Abstract:We establish the equivalence between Levitt-Ranicki's theory and Brumfiel-Morgan, Madsen-Milgram, Morgan-Sullivan, Rourke-Sullivan, Sullivan's theories. This answers Brumfiel's question on the equivalence. These two theories are fundamental tools to study the existence and uniqueness of $TOP$ bundle reductions for spherical fibrations, which is equivalent to the existence and uniqueness of manifolds in a homotopy type.

Weak compactness cardinals for strong logics and subtlety properties of the class of ordinals

Abstract:Motivated by recent work of Boney, Dimopoulos, Gitman and Magidor, we characterize the existence of weak compactness cardinals for all abstract logics through combinatorial properties of the class of ordinals. This analysis is then used to show that, in contrast to the existence of strong compactness cardinals, the existence of weak compactness cardinals for abstract logics does not imply the existence of a strongly inaccessible cardinal. More precisely, it is proven that the existence of a proper class of subtle cardinals is consistent with the axioms of ZFC if and only if it is not possible to derive the existence of strongly inaccessible cardinals from the existence of weak compactness cardinals for all abstract logics. Complementing this result, it is shown that the existence of weak compactness cardinals for all abstract logics implies that unboundedly many ordinals are strongly inaccessible in the inner model HOD of all hereditarily ordinal definable sets.

Abstract:The class of Abelian p-groups are an example of some very interesting phenomena in computable structure theory. We will give an elementary first-order theory Tp whose models are each bi-interpretable with the disjoint union of an Abelian p-group and a pure set (and so that every Abelian p-group is bi-interpretable with a model of Tp) using computable infinitary formulas. This answers a question of Knight by giving an example of an elementary first-order theory of “Ulm type”: Any two models, low for ω1CK, and with the same computable infinitary theory, are isomorphic. It also gives a new example of an elementary first-order theory whose isomorphism problem is Σ11-complete but not Borel complete.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathcal{O}_K$ be its ring of integers. Let $\mathfrak{B}$ be a primitive collection of ideals in $\mathcal{O}_K$. We show that any $\mathfrak{B}$-free system is essentially minimal. Moreoever, the $\mathfrak{B}$-free system is minimal if and only if the characteristic function of $\mathfrak{B}$-free numbers is a Toeplitz sequence. Equivalently, there are no ideal $\mathfrak{d}$ and no infinite pairwise coprime collection of ideals $\mathcal{C}$ such that $\mathfrak{d}\mathcal{C}\subseteq\mathfrak{B}$. Moreover, we find a periodic structure in the Toeplitz case. Last but not least, we describe the restrictions on the cosets of ideals contained in unions of ideals.
