Abstract:We introduce a framework for Segre varieties for singular real-analytic subvarieties of a complex space and utilize it to study the intrinsic complexifications of these subvarieties. Many examples illustrate the subtle issues arising in the singular setting.

Abstract:We study an irreducible real-analytic germ of an $n$-dimensional variety in $n$ dimensional complex space. Assuming that the variety is Segre nondegenerate we define an averaging operator that generalizes the Moser--Webster involution. This operator can be thought of as being the CR structure of the singularity, and using this operator we study the set of functions that are restrictions of holomorphic functions. We give a condition on the flattening of the singularity, that is realizing the singularity as a codimention one subvariety of a nonsingular Levi-flat hypersurface.

Abstract:We study singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space. We define the rank of an algebraic Levi-flat hypersurface and study the connections between rank, degree, and the type and size of the singularity. In particular, we study degenerate singularities of algebraic Levi-flat hypersurfaces. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a meromorphic function. Among other examples, we construct a nonalgebraic semianalytic Levi-flat hypersurface with compact leaves that is a perturbation of an algebraic Levi-flat variety.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a Seshadri stratification on an embedded projective variety. Such a structure enables us to construct a Newton-Okounkov simplicial complex and a flat degeneration of the projective variety into a union of toric varieties. We show that the Seshadri stratification provides a geometric setup for a standard monomial theory. In this framework, Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths for Schubert varieties get a geometric interpretation as successive vanishing orders of regular functions.

Singular Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space induced by curves in the Grassmannian

Abstract:Let $H \subset {\mathbb P}^n$ be a real-analytic subvariety of codimension one induced by a real-analytic curve in the Grassmannian $G(n+1,n)$. Assuming $H$ has a global defining function, we prove $H$ is Levi-flat, the closure of its smooth points of top dimension is a union of complex hyperplanes, and its singular set is either of dimension $2n-2$ or dimension $2n-4$. If the singular set is of dimension $2n-4$, then we show the hypersurface is algebraic and the Levi-foliation extends to a singular holomorphic foliation of ${\mathbb P}^n$ with a meromorphic (rational of degree 1) first integral. In this case, $H$ is in some sense simply a complex cone over an algebraic curve in ${\mathbb P}^1$. Similarly if $H$ has a degenerate singularity, then $H$ is also algebraic. If the dimension of the singular set is $2n-2$ and is nondegenerate, we show by construction that the hypersurface need not be algebraic nor semialgebraic. We construct a Levi-flat real-analytic subvariety in ${\mathbb P}^2$ of real codimension 1 with compact leaves that is not contained in any proper real-algebraic subvariety of ${\mathbb P}^2$. Therefore a straightforward analogue of Chow's theorem for Levi-flat hypersurfaces does not hold.

Abstract:Let X⊂YX subset Y be closed (possibly singular) subschemes of a smooth projective toric variety TT. We show how to compute the Segre class s(X,Y){s}(X,Y) as a class in the Chow group of TT. Building on this, we give effective methods to compute intersection products in projective varieties, to determine algebraic multiplicity without working in local rings, and to test pairwise containment of subvarieties of TT. Our methods may be implemented without using Gröbner bases; in particular any algorithm to compute the number of solutions of a zero-dimensional polynomial system may be used.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of semi-legendrian real submanifold in a complex manifold of dimension 3 and prove that real submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^2$ can be uniquely lifted to $\mathbb{C}^3$. Then we deduce a complex duality between real submanifolds of $\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{C})$.

Abstract:We study the structure of complex points on real surfaces, embedded into complex Elliptic surfaces. We show, for example, that any compact surface has a totally real embedding into a blow-up of a K3 surface. We also exhibit smooth disc bundles over compact orientable surfaces that have a Stein structure as Stein domains inside Elliptic surfaces.

Abstract:Many key invariants in the representation theory of classical groups (symmetric groups $S_n$, matrix groups $GL_n$, $O_n$, $Sp_{2n}$) are polynomials in $n$ (e.g., dimensions of irreducible representations). This allowed Deligne to extend the representation theory of these groups to complex values of the rank $n$. Namely, Deligne defined generically semisimple families of tensor categories parametrized by $n\in \mathbb{C}$, which at positive integer $n$ specialize to the classical representation categories. Using Deligne's work, Etingof proposed a similar extrapolation for many non-semisimple representation categories built on representation categories of classical groups, e.g., degenerate affine Hecke algebras (dAHA). It is expected that for generic $n\in \mathbb{C}$ such extrapolations behave as they do for large integer $n$ ("stabilization"). The goal of our work is to provide a technique to prove such statements. Namely, we develop an algebro-geometric framework to study categories indexed by a parameter $n$, in which the set of values of $n$ for which the category has a given property is constructible. This implies that if a property holds for integer $n$, it then holds for generic complex $n$. We use this to give a new proof that Deligne's categories are generically semisimple. We also apply this method to Etingof's extrapolations of dAHA, and prove that when $n$ is transcendental, "finite-dimensional" simple objects are quotients of certain standard induced objects, extrapolating Zelevinsky's classification of simple dAHA-modules for $n\in \mathbb{N}$. Finally, we obtain similar results for the extrapolations of categories associated to wreath products of the symmetric group with associative algebras.

Abstract:The notion of an analytic-geometric category was introduced by v. d. Dries and Miller in [Lou van den Dries and Chris Miller, Geometric categories and o-minimal structures, Duke Math. J. 84 (1996), no. 2, 497–540.]. It is a category of subsets of real analytic manifolds which extends the category of subanalytic sets. This paper discusses connections between the subanalytic category, or more generally analytic-geometric categories, and complex analytic geometry. The questions are of the following nature: We start with a subset A of a complex analytic manifold M and assume that A is an object of an analytic-geometric category (by viewing M as a real analytic manifold of double dimension). We then formulate conditions under which A, its closure or its image under a holomorphic map is a complex analytic set. In the second part of the paper we consider the notion of a complex -manifold, which generalizes that of a compact complex manifold. We discuss uniformity in parameters, in this context, within families of complex manifolds and their high-order holomorphic tangent bundles. We then prove a result on uniform embeddings of analytic subsets of -manifolds into a projective space, which extends theorems of Campana ([F. Campana, Algébricité et compacité dans l'espace des cycles d'un espace analytique complexe, Math. Ann. 251 (1980), no. 1, 7–18.]) and Fujiki ([Akira Fujiki, On the Douady space of a compact complex space in the category 𝒞, Nagoya Math. J. 85 (1982), 189–211.]) on compact complex manifolds.

Abstract:<p>Motivated by the study of the secant variety of the Segre-Veronese variety we propose a general framework to analyze properties of the secant varieties of toric embeddings of affine spaces defined by simplicial complexes. We prove that every such secant is toric, which gives a way to use combinatorial tools to study singularities. We focus on the Segre-Veronese variety for which we completely classify their secants that give Gorenstein or <span class="math"><math>Q</math></span>-Gorenstein varieties. We conclude providing the explicit description of the singular locus.</p>

Singularities of secant varieties from a Hodge theoretic perspective

Abstract:We study the singularities of secant varieties of smooth projective varieties using methods from birational geometry when the embedding line bundle is sufficiently positive. More precisely, we study the Du Bois complex of secant varieties and its relationship with the sheaves of differential forms. Through this analysis, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for these varieties to have $p$-Du Bois singularities (in a sense that was proposed in [SVV23]). In addition, we show that the singularities of these varieties are never higher rational, by giving a classification of the cases when they are pre-1-rational. From these results, we deduce several consequences, including a Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing result for the reflexive differential forms of the secant varieties.

Abstract:A natural oriented (2k+2)-chain in CP^{2k+1} with boundary twice RP^{2k+1}, its complex shade, is constructed. Via intersection numbers with the shade, a new invariant, the shade number of k-dimensional subvarieties with normal vector fields along their real part, is introduced. For an even-dimensional real variety, the shade number and the Euler number of the complement of the normal vector field in the real normal bundle of its real part agree. For an odd- dimensional orientable real variety, a linear combination of the shade number and the wrapping number (self-linking number) of its real part is independent of the normal vector field and equals the encomplexed writhe as defined by Viro. Shade numbers of varieties without real points and encomplexed writhes of odd- dimensional real varieties are, in a sense, Vassiliev invariants of degree 1. Complex shades of odd-dimensional spheres are constructed. Shade numbers of real subvarieties in spheres have properties analogous to those of their projective counterparts.
Singularities of Generalized Richardson Varieties

Abstract:Richardson varieties play an important role in intersection theory and in the geometric interpretation of the Littlewood–Richardson Rule for flag varieties. We discuss three natural generalizations of Richardson varieties which we call projection varieties, intersection varieties, and rank varieties. In many ways, these varieties are more fundamental than Richardson varieties and are more easily amenable to inductive geometric constructions. In this article, we study the singularities of each type of generalization. Like Richardson varieties, projection varieties are normal with rational singularities. We also study in detail the singular loci of projection varieties in Type A Grassmannians. We use Kleiman's Transversality Theorem to determine the singular locus of any intersection variety in terms of the singular loci of Schubert varieties. This is a generalization of a criterion for any Richardson variety to be smooth in terms of the nonvanishing of certain cohomology classes which has been known by some experts in the field, but we don't believe has been published previously.

A notion of seminormalization for real algebraic varieties

Abstract:Abstract The seminormalization of an algebraic variety is the biggest variety linked to by a finite, birational, and bijective morphism. In this paper, we introduce a variant of the seminormalization, suited for real algebraic varieties, called the R‐seminormalization. This object has a universal property of the same kind as the one of the seminormalization but related to the real closed points of the variety. In a previous paper, the author studied the seminormalization of complex algebraic varieties using rational functions that extend continuously to the closed points for the Euclidean topology. We adapt some of those results here to the R‐seminormalization, and we provide several examples. We also show that the R‐seminormalization modifies the singularities of a real variety by normalizing the purely complex points and seminormalizing the real ones.

Semialgebraic groups and generalized affine buildings

Abstract:We develop the theory of algebraic groups over real closed fields and apply the results to construct a geometric object $\mathcal{B}$ and to prove that $\mathcal{B}$ is an affine $\Lambda$-building. We use a model theoretic transfer principle to prove generalizations of statements about semisimple Lie groups. In this direction we give proofs for the Iwasawa-decomposition $KAU$, the Cartan-decomposition $KAK$ and the Bruhat-decomposition $BWB$. For unipotent subgroups we prove the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula and use it to analyse root groups. We give a proof of the Jacobson-Morozov Lemma about subgroups whose Lie algebra is isomorphic to $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and we describe other rank 1 subgroups which are the semisimple parts of Levi-subgroups. We prove a semialgebraic version of Kostant's convexity. Over the reals, semisimple Lie groups are closely related to the symmetry groups of symmetric spaces of non-compact type. These symmetric spaces can be described semialgebraically, which allows us to consider their semialgebraic extension over any real closed field. Starting from these non-standard symmetric spaces we use a valuation (with image some non-discrete ordered abelian group $\Lambda$) on the fields to define a $\Lambda$-pseudometric. Identifying points of distance zero results in a $\Lambda$-metric space $\mathcal{B}$. Assuming that the root system of the associated Lie group is reduced, we prove that $\mathcal{B}$ is an affine $\Lambda$-building. The proof relies on a thorough analysis of stabilizers.

Also, varieties of $\mathfrak{g}$-structure like $\mathfrak{g}$-Grassmannian, $\mathfrak{g}$-determinantal varieties and finally the variety $\mathcal{DGLA}(E)$ of differential graded Lie algebra structures on $E$. We will compute the dimensions of these varieties and also some relevant properties. The motivation of this article is to give examples of moduli spaces relevant to deformation theory.
