Abstract:We show that the nuclear dimension of a (twisted) group C*-algebra of a virtually polycyclic group is finite. This prompts us to make a conjecture relating finite nuclear dimension of group C*-algebras and finite Hirsch length, which we then verify for a class of elementary amenable groups beyond the virtually polycyclic case. In particular, we give the first examples of finitely generated, non-residually finite groups with finite nuclear dimension. A parallel conjecture on finite decomposition rank is also formulated and an analogous result is obtained. Our method relies heavily on recent work of Hirshberg and the second named author on actions of virtually nilpotent groups on $C_0(X)$-algebras.

Abstract:We characterise subhomogeneity for twisted étale groupoid C*-algebras and obtain an upper bound on their nuclear dimension. As an application, we remove the principality assumption in recent results on upper bounds on the nuclear dimension of a twisted étale groupoid C*-algebra in terms of the dynamic asymptotic dimension of the groupoid and the covering dimension of its unit space. As a non-principal example, we show that the dynamic asymptotic dimension of any minimal (not necessarily free) action of the infinite dihedral group $D_\infty$ on an infinite compact Hausdorff space $X$ is always one. So if we further assume that $X$ is second-countable and has finite covering dimension, then $C(X)\rtimes_r D_\infty$ has finite nuclear dimension and is classifiable by its Elliott invariant.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a notion of transfinite nuclear dimension for $C^*$-algebras, which coincides with the nuclear dimension when taking values in natural numbers. We use it to characterise a stronger form of having nuclear dimension at most $\omega$ and moreover, we show that the transfinite nuclear dimension of a uniform Roe algebra is bounded by the transfinite asymptotic dimension of the underlying space. Hence we obtain that the uniform Roe algebra for spaces with asymptotic property C has the corona factorisation property.

Abstract:We introduce and study a notion of module nuclear dimension for a C * \mathrm{C}^{*} -algebra A which is a C * \mathrm{C}^{*} -module over another C * \mathrm{C}^{*} -algebra ūĚĒĄ {\mathfrak{A}} with compatible actions. We show that the module nuclear dimension of A is zero if A is ūĚĒĄ {\mathfrak{A}} -NF. The converse is shown to hold when ūĚĒĄ {\mathfrak{A}} is a C ‚ĀĘ ( X ) {C(X)} -algebra with simple fibers, with X compact and totally disconnected. We also introduce a notion of module decomposition rank, and show that when ūĚĒĄ {\mathfrak{A}} is unital and simple, if the module decomposition rank of A is finite then A is ūĚĒĄ {\mathfrak{A}} -QD. We study the set ūĚíĮ ūĚĒĄ ‚ĀĘ ( A ) {\mathcal{T}_{\mathfrak{A}}(A)} of ūĚĒĄ {\mathfrak{A}} -valued module traces on A and relate the Cuntz semigroup of A with lower semicontinuous affine functions on the set ūĚíĮ ūĚĒĄ ‚ĀĘ ( A ) {\mathcal{T}_{\mathfrak{A}}(A)} . Along the way, we also prove a module Choi‚ÄďEffros lifting theorem. We give estimates of the module nuclear dimension for a class of examples.

Abstract:We partially characterize nuclearity for the recently introduced class of hypergraph C*-algebras using a tailor-made hypergraph minor relation. The latter is generated by certain operations on hypergraphs which resemble the moves on directed graphs used by Eilers, Restorff, Ruiz and Sørensen to classify unital graph C*-algebras. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the fact that every graph C*-algebra associated to a finite graph is nuclear.

Abstract:We consider a twist E over an étale groupoid G. When G is principal, we prove that the nuclear dimension of the reduced twisted groupoid C ⁎ -algebra is bounded by a number depending on the dynamic asymptotic dimension of G and the topological covering dimension of its unit space. This generalizes an analogous theorem by Guentner, Willett, and Yu for the C ⁎ -algebra of G. Our proof uses a reduction to the unital case where G has compact unit space, via a construction of “groupoid unitizations” G ˜ and E ˜ of G and E such that E ˜ is a twist over G ˜ . The construction of G ˜ is for r-discrete (hence for étale) groupoids G which are not necessarily principal. When G is étale, the dynamic asymptotic dimension of G and G ˜ coincide. We show that the minimal unitizations of the full and reduced twisted groupoid C ⁎ -algebras of the twist over G are isomorphic to the twisted groupoid C ⁎ -algebras of the twist over G ˜ . We apply our result about the nuclear dimension of the twisted groupoid C ⁎ -algebra to obtain a similar bound on the nuclear dimension of the C ⁎ -algebra of an étale groupoid with closed orbits and abelian stability subgroups that vary continuously.

Abstract:We classify all essential extensions of the form $$0 \rightarrow \W \rightarrow \D \rightarrow A \rightarrow 0$$ where $\W$ is the unique separable simple C*-algebra with a unique tracial state, with finite nuclear dimension and with $K_i(\W)=\{0\}$ ($i=0,1$) which satisfies the Universal Coefficient theorem (UCT), and $A$ is a separable amenable $\W$-embeddable C*-algebra which satisfies the UCT. We actually prove more general results. We also classify a class of amenable \CA s which have only one proper closed ideal $\W.$

Abstract:We establish finite nuclear dimension for crossed product C*-algebras arising from various classes of possibly non-free topological actions, including arbitrary actions of finitely generated virtually nilpotent groups on finite dimensional spaces, certain amenable actions of hyperbolic groups, and certain allosteric actions of wreath products. We obtain these results by introducing a new notion of dimension for topological dynamical systems, called the long thin covering dimension, which involves a suitable version of Rokhlin-type towers with controlled overlaps for possibly non-free actions.

Abstract:We write arbitrary separable nuclear C*-algebras as limits of inductive systems of finite-dimensional C*-algebras with completely positive connecting maps. The characteristic feature of such CPC*-systems is that the maps become more and more orthogonality preserving. This condition makes it possible to equip the limit, a priori only an operator space, with a multiplication turning it into a C*-algebra. Our concept generalizes the NF systems of Blackadar and Kirchberg beyond the quasidiagonal case.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce and study the notion of Goldie dimension for C*-algebras. We prove that a C*-algebra A has Goldie dimension n if and only if the dimension of the center of its local multiplier algebra is n. In this case, A has finite-dimensional center and its primitive spectrum is extremally disconnected. If moreover, A is extending, we show that it decomposes into a direct sum of n prime C*-algebras. In particular, every stably finite, exact C*-algebra with Goldie dimension, that has the projection property and a strictly full element, admits a full projection and a non-zero densely defined lower semi-continuous trace. Finally we show that certain C*-algebras with Goldie dimension (not necessarily simple, separable or nuclear) are classifiable by the Elliott invariant.

Abstract:We introduce $C^*$-algebras associated to directed graphs of groups. In particular, we associate a combinatorial $C^*$-algebra to each row-finite directed graph of groups with no sources, and show that this $C^*$-algebra is Morita equivalent to the crossed product coming from the corresponding group action on the boundary of a directed tree. Finally, we show that these $C^*$-algebras (and their Morita equivalent crossed products) contain the class of stable UCT Kirchberg algebras.

Abstract:This study aims to introduce the notions of injectivity, local reflexivity, exactness, and nuclearity in the system ( ( Γ_2^c( · , ·),γ_2^c( ·)) ). We find that every dual operator space is injective in the system ( ( Γ_2^c( · , ·),γ_2^c( ·)) ) and nuclearity is equivalent to exactness in this system. As a corollary, we prove that Kirchberg’s conjecture on the equivalence of exactness and local reflexivity for C * -algebras is false in this system, i.e., there exists a C *-algebra A that is locally reflexive in this system but is not exact in this system.
On the dimension of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra and related algebras

Abstract:In 1999, Fomin-Kirillov introduced the quadratic algebras $\mathcal{E}_m$ in terms of generators and relations which are the universal quadratic cover of the algebra generated by divided difference operators $\partial_{ij}$ acting on the polynomial ring $\mathbf{k}[x_1,\ldots,x_m]$. These algebras are mostly important due to their relations to Schubert calculus and geometry and to the general framework of quantum groups and Nichols algebras. Fomin and Kirillov asked about the dimension of $\mathcal{E}_m$. In this paper, we prove that $\mathcal{E}_m$ is infinite dimensional for all $m\geq 6$ which was a well-known conjecture. The techniques we use rely on braided differential calculus as developed by Liu and Bazlov as well as on the notion of integrals for Hopf algebras as introduced by Sweedler.

Abstract:C*-algebras are rings, sometimes nonunital, obeying certain axioms that ensure a very well-behaved representation theory upon Hilbert space. Moreover, there are some well-known features of the representation theory leading to subtle questions about norms on tensor products of C*-algebras, and thus to the subclass of nuclear C*-algebras. The question whether all separable nuclear C*-algebras satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem (UCT) remains one of the most important open problems in the structure and classification theory of such algebras. One of the most promising ways to test the UCT conjecture depends on finding C*-algebras that behave as idempotents under the tensor product, and satisfy certain additional properties. Briefly put, it has been shown that if there exists a simple, separable, and nuclear C*-algebra that is an idempotent under the tensor product, satisfies a certain technical property, and is not one of the already known such elements $\left\{ O_\infty, O_2, \UHF , J, Z, \C, \compact \right\}$ then the UCT fails. Although we do not disprove the UCT in this publication, we do find new idempotents in the class of Villadsen algebras.

Abstract:We give a definition of hypergraph C*-algebras. These generalize the well-known graph C*-algebras as well as ultragraph C*-algebras. In contrast to those objects, hypergraph C*-algebras are not always nuclear. We provide a number of non-nuclear examples, we prove a Gauge-Invariant Uniqueness Theorem for a subclass of hypergraph C*-algebras and we study moves on hypergraphs which generalize the moves in the theory of graph C*-algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we exhibit two unital, separable, nuclear ${\rm C}^*$-algebras of stable rank one and real rank zero with the same ordered scaled total K-theory, but they are not isomorphic with each other, which forms a counterexample to Elliott Classification Conjecture for real rank zero setting. Thus, we introduce an additional normal condition and give a classification result in terms of total K-theory. For the general setting, with a new invariant -- total Cuntz semigroup \cite{AL}, we classify a large class of ${\rm C}^*$-algebras obtained from extensions. The total Cuntz semigroup, which distinguish the algebras of our counterexample, could possibly classify all the ${\rm C}^*$-algebras of stable rank one and real rank zero.

Abstract:We consider inductive systems of C*-algebras with completely positive contractive connecting maps. We define a condition, called C*-encoding, which is sufficient for the limit of the system to be completely order isomorphic to a C*-algebra and hence guarantees a unique C*-algebra associated to the limit. When the system consists of finite-dimensional C*-algebras, this condition is also necessary and thus characterizes when the limit is completely order isomorphic to a (nuclear) C*-algebra. C*-encoding systems generalize the NF systems of Blackadar and Kirchberg and the CPC*-systems of the author and Winter. Moreover, any system of completely positive approximations of a nuclear C*-algebra gives rise to a C*-encoding system. Consequently a separable C*-algebra is nuclear if and only if it is completely order isomorphic to the limit of a C*-encoding system. This gives an inductive limit description of all separable nuclear C*-algebras equivalent to the recent construction of the author and Winter but without the additional structure of order zero maps. Without these extra structural requirements, one can easily construct examples of our systems, which we demonstrate for all amenable group C*-algebras.
