Abstract:We present the first forward-rapidity measurements of elliptic anisotropy of open-heavy-flavor muons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are based on data samples of Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The measurements are performed in the pseudorapidity range $1.2<|\eta|<2$ and cover transverse momenta $1<p_T<4$~GeV/$c$. The elliptic flow of charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum is also measured in the same kinematic range. We observe significant elliptic flow for both charged hadrons and heavy-flavor muons. The results show clear mass ordering of elliptic flow of light- and heavy-flavor particles. The magnitude of the measured $v_2$ is comparable to that in the midrapidity region. This indicates that there is no strong longitudinal dependence in the quark-gluon-plasma evolution between midrapidity and the rapidity range of this measurement at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to measure the elliptic anisotropy of charged hadrons and open heavy - flavor muons in the forward rapidity region in relativistic heavy - ion collisions, especially in gold - gold (Au + Au) collisions. Specifically, the researchers hope to understand the evolution characteristics of the Quark - Gluon Plasma (QGP) in different longitudinal regions through these measurements, especially the differences between the forward rapidity region and the mid - rapidity region. In addition, by comparing the elliptic flow of light - flavor particles and heavy - flavor particles, the researchers hope to reveal the transport properties of heavy - flavor quarks in QGP and the specific mechanisms of their interaction with the QGP medium. ### Summary of the core problems in the paper: 1. **Measuring the elliptic flow in the forward rapidity region**: - For the first time, the researchers measured the elliptic flow of charged hadrons and open heavy - flavor muons in the forward rapidity region (1.2 < |η| < 2). - These measurements are based on the data collected in 2014 and 2016 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) with an energy of √sNN = 200 GeV and a total integrated luminosity of 14.5 nb^-1. 2. **Understanding the longitudinal evolution characteristics of QGP**: - By comparing the elliptic flow in the forward rapidity region and the mid - rapidity region, the researchers hope to verify whether there are significant differences in the evolution of QGP in different longitudinal regions. - If there are no significant differences, it will indicate that the evolution of QGP is uniform in these regions. 3. **Exploring the interaction between heavy - flavor quarks and the QGP medium**: - By measuring the elliptic flow of light - flavor particles and heavy - flavor particles, the researchers hope to understand the transport properties of heavy - flavor quarks in QGP. - Of particular interest is whether heavy - flavor quarks can reach equilibrium with QGP, as well as their diffusion and drag coefficients in QGP. ### Explanation of formulas: - **Definition of elliptic flow**: \[ v_2=\langle\cos[2(\phi - \Psi_2)]\rangle \] where \(\phi\) is the azimuthal angle of the particle and \(\Psi_2\) is the angle of the second - order symmetry plane. - **Event - plane resolution**: \[ R_n = \sqrt{\frac{\langle\cos[2(\Psi_a - \Psi_b)]\rangle\langle\cos[2(\Psi_a - \Psi_c)]\rangle}{\langle\cos[2(\Psi_b - \Psi_c)]\rangle}} \] - **Observed elliptic flow**: \[ v_{\text{obs}}^2=\frac{\pi}{4}\frac{N_{\text{in}} - N_{\text{out}}}{N_{\text{in}}+N_{\text{out}}} \] where \(N_{\text{in}}\) and \(N_{\text{out}}\) are the number of particles detected inside and outside the event plane, respectively. - **Statistical uncertainty**: \[ \sigma_{v_{\text{obs}}^2}=\frac{\pi}{2(N_{\text{in}}+N_{\text{out}})^2}\sqrt{(N_{\text{out}}\sigma_{\text{in}})^2+(N_{\text{in}}\sigma_{\text{out}})^2} \] Through these measurements and analyses, the researchers hope to gain a deeper understanding of the properties of QGP and its behavior in high - energy heavy - ion collisions.
