Abstract:We continue to establish uniform upper bounds and asymptotic expansions for the kernels of the index transforms which were recently developed for the Kontorovich-Lebedev operator. It involves the Mehler-Fock, Lebedev, index Whittaker and Olevskii transforms.

Abstract:Classical integral representation of the Mellin type kernel x−z=1Γ(z)∫0∞e−xttz−1dt,x>0,Re z>0, in terms of the Laplace integral gives an idea to construct a class of non-convolution (index) transforms with the kernel kz±(x)=∫0∞e−xt±1r(t)tz−1dt,x>0, where r(t)≠0,t∈R+ admits a power series expansion, which has an infinite radius of convergence and the integral converges absolutely in a half-plane of the complex plane z. Particular examples give the Kontorovich–Lebedev-like transformation and new transformations with hypergeometric functions as kernels. Mapping properties and inversion formulas are obtained. Finally we prove a new inversion theorem for the modified Kontorovich–Lebedev transform.

Abstract:We discuss properties of the index hypergeometric transform (it is named also the Jacobi transform or the Olevsky transform) interpolating analysis of Berezin kernels on rank 1 symmetric spaces. We discuss a unitary intertwining operator from $L^2$ on symmetric space to Berezin deformation of $L^2$. We also find images of some differential operators under the index transform.

On the product formula and convolution associated with the index Whittaker transform

Abstract:We deduce a product formula for the Whittaker $W$ function whose kernel does not depend on the second parameter. Making use of this formula, we define the positivity-preserving convolution operator associated with the index Whittaker transform, which is seen to be a direct generalization of the Kontorovich-Lebedev convolution. The mapping properties of this convolution operator are investigated; in particular, a Banach algebra property is established and then applied to yield an analogue of the Wiener-Lévy theorem for the index Whittaker transform. We show how our results can be used to prove the existence of a unique solution for a class of convolution-type integral equations.

Abstract:We study the most general class of eigenfunction expansions for abstract normal operators with pure point spectrum in a complex Hilbert space. We find sufficient conditions for such expansions to be unconditionally convergent in spaces with two norms and also estimate the degree of this convergence. Our result essentially generalizes and complements the known theorems of Krein and of Krasnosel'skiĭ and Pustyl'nik. We apply it to normal elliptic pseudodifferential operators on compact boundaryless -manifolds. We find generic conditions for eigenfunction expansions induced by such operators to converge unconditionally in the Sobolev spaces with or in the spaces (specifically, for the -th mean or uniform convergence on the manifold). These conditions are sufficient and necessary for the indicated convergence on Sobolev or Hörmander function classes and are given in terms of parameters characterizing these classes. We also find estimates for the degree of the convergence on such function classes. These results are new even for differential operators on the circle and for multiple Fourier series.

The Duistermaat index and eigenvalue interlacing for self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric operator

Abstract:Eigenvalue interlacing is a useful tool in linear algebra and spectral analysis. In its simplest form, the interlacing inequality states that a rank-one positive perturbation shifts each eigenvalue up, but not further than the next unperturbed eigenvalue. For different types of perturbations, this idea is known as Weyl interlacing, Cauchy interlacing, Dirichlet--Neumann bracketing and so on. We prove a sharp version of the interlacing inequalities for ``finite-dimensional perturbations in boundary conditions'', expressed as bounds on the spectral shift between two self-adjoint extensions of a fixed symmetric operator with finite and equal defect numbers. The bounds are given in terms of the Duistermaat index, a topological invariant describing the relative position of three Lagrangian planes in a symplectic space. Two of the Lagrangian planes describe the self-adjoint extensions being compared, while the third corresponds to the Friedrichs extension, which acts as a reference point. Along the way several auxiliary results are established, including one-sided continuity properties of the Duistermaat triple index, smoothness of the (abstract) Cauchy data space without unique continuation-type assumptions, and a formula for the Morse index of an extension of a non-negative symmetric operator.

Abstract:In this paper we study the concentration properties for the eigenvalues of kernel matrices, which are central objects in a wide range of kernel methods and, more recently, in network analysis. We present a set of concentration inequalities tailored for each individual eigenvalue of the kernel matrix with respect to its known asymptotic limit. The inequalities presented here are of relative type, meaning that they scale with the eigenvalue in consideration, which results in convergence rates that vary across the spectrum. The rates we obtain here are faster than the typical $Ø(\frac{1}{\sqrt n})$ and are often exponential, depending on regularity assumptions of Sobolev type. One key feature of our results is that they apply to non positive kernels, which is fundamental in the context of network analysis. We show how our results are well suited for the study of dot product kernels, which are related to random geometric graphs on the sphere, via the graphon formalism. We illustrate our results by applying them to a variety of dot product kernels on the sphere and to the one dimensional Gaussian kernel.

Abstract:This paper's main objective is to find new upper bounds for the norm of the sum of two Hilbert space operators and their Kronecker product. The obtained results extend some previously known results from the set of positive operators to arbitrary ones and refine several existing bounds. In particular, applications of the established bounds include refining celebrated numerical radius inequalities and the celebrated operator Cauchy–Schwarz norm inequality.

Abstract:By extending the classical quantitative approximation results for positive and linear operators in $L^{p}([0, 1]), 1\le p \le +\infty$ of Berens and DeVore in 1978 and of Swetits and Wood in 1983 to the more general case of sublinear, monotone and strongly translatable operators, in this paper we obtain quantitative estimates in terms of the second order and third order moduli of smoothness, in Korovkin type theorems. Applications to concrete examples are included and an open question concerning interpolation theory for sublinear, monotone and strongly translatable operators is raised.

Abstract:We prove a uniform vector-valued Wiener-Wintner Theorem for a class of operators that includes compositions of ergodic Koopman operators with contractive multiplication operators. Our results are new even in the case of complex-valued functions, as they also apply to some non-positive non-contractive operators, and they give new uniform pointwise theorems for ergodic, weakly mixing, and mildly mixing Koopman operators.

Abstract:It was conjectured by the first author and Peetre that the higher Laplace–Beltrami operators generate the whole ring of invariant operators on bounded symmetric domains. We give a proof of the conjecture for domains of rank ≤ 6 by using a graph manipulation of Kähler curvature tensor. We also compute higher order terms in the asymptotic expansions of the Bergman kernels and the Berezin transform on bounded symmetric domain.

Abstract:We study the eigenvalues $\lambda_1,\lambda_2,\lambda_3,\ldots$ (ordered by modulus) of the integral kernel $K(x,y) := \frac{1}{2} + \lfloor \frac{1}{x y}\rfloor - \frac{1}{x y}$ ($0<x,y\leq 1$). This kernel is of interest in connection with an identity of F. Mertens involving the Möbius function. We establish that $\sum_{m=1}^{\infty} |\lambda_m|^{-1} = \infty$, and prove that $|\lambda_m| > m\log^{-3/2} m$ for all but finitely many positive integers $m$. The first of these results is an application of the theory of Hankel operators; the proof of the second result utilises a family of degenerate kernels $k_3,k_4,k_5,\ldots$ that are step-function approximations to $K$. Through separate computational work on eigenvalues of $k_N$ ($N=2^{21}$) we obtain numerical bounds, both upper and lower, for specific eigenvalues of $K$. Further computational work, on eigenvalues of $k_N$ ($N\in\{ 2^{10},2^{11},\ldots ,2^{21}\}$), leads us to formulate a quite precise conjecture concerning where on the real line the eigenvalues $\lambda_1,\lambda_2,\ldots ,\lambda_{767}$ are located: we discuss how this conjecture could (if it is correct) be viewed as supportive of certain interesting general conjectures concerning the eigenvalues of $K$.
