Abstract:In this paper we determine a classification of the endomorphisms of the Artin group $A [D_n]$ of type $D_n$ for $n\ge 6$. In particular we determine its automorphism group and its outer automorphism group. We also determine a classification of the homomorphisms from $A[D_n]$ to the Artin group $A [A_{n-1}]$ of type $A_{n-1}$ and a classification of the homomorphisms from $A[A_{n-1}]$ to $A[D_n]$ for $n\ge 6$. We show that any endomorphism of the quotient $A [D_n] / Z (A [D_n])$ lifts to an endomorphism of $A [D_n]$ for $n \ge 4$. We deduce a classification of the endomorphisms of $A [D_n] / Z (A [D_n])$, we determine the automorphism and outer automorphism groups of $A [D_n] / Z (A [D_n])$, and we show that $A [D_n] / Z (A [D_n])$ is co-Hopfian, for $n \ge 6$. The results are algebraic in nature but the proofs are based on topological arguments (curves on surfaces and mapping class groups).

Abstract:We establish property $R_\infty$ for Artin groups of spherical type $D_n$, $n\ge6$, their central quotients, and also for large hyperbolic-type free-of-infinity Artin groups and some other classes of large-type Artin groups. The key ingredients are recent descriptions of the automorphism groups for these Artin groups and their action on suitable Gromov-hyperbolic spaces.

Abstract:We compute explicitly the automorphism and outer automorphism group of all large-type free-of-infinity Artin groups. Our strategy involves reconstructing the associated Deligne complexes in a purely algebraic manner, i.e. in a way that is independent from the choice of standard generators for the groups.

Abstract:In a recent article, Cumplido and Paris studied the question of commensurability between Artin groups of spherical type. Their analysis left six cases undecided, for the following pairs of Artin groups: $(F_4,D_4)$, $(H_4,D_4)$, $(F_4,H_4)$, $(E_6,D_6)$, $(E_7,D_7)$, and $(E_8,D_8)$. In this note we resolve the first two of these cases, namely, we show that the Artin groups of types $F_4$ and $H_4$ are not commensurable with that of type $D_4$. As a key step, we realize the abstract commensurator of the Artin group of type $D_4$ as the extended mapping class group of the torus with three punctures. We also find the automorphism group of the Artin group of type $D_4$ and obtain a description of torsion elements, their orders and conjugacy classes in all irreducible Artin groups of spherical type modulo their centers.

Acylindrical hyperbolicity for Artin groups with a visual splitting

Abstract:We establish a criterion that implies the acylindrical hyperbolicity of many Artin groups admitting a visual splitting. This gives a variety of new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic Artin groups, including many Artin groups of FC-type. Our approach relies on understanding when parabolic subgroups are weakly malnormal in a given Artin group. We formulate a conjecture for when this happens, and prove it for several classes of Artin groups, including all spherical-type, all two-dimensional, and all even FC-type Artin groups. In addition, we establish some connections between several conjectures about Artin groups, related to questions of acylindrical hyperbolicity, weak malnormality of parabolic subgroups, and intersections of parabolic subgroups.

Membership problems in braid groups and Artin groups

Abstract:We study several natural decision problems in braid groups and Artin groups. We classify the Artin groups with decidable submonoid membership problem in terms of the non-existence of certain forbidden induced subgraphs of the defining graph. Furthermore, we also classify the Artin groups for which the following problems are decidable: the rational subset membership problem, semigroup intersection problem, and the fixed-target submonoid membership problem. In the case of braid groups our results show that the submonoid membership problem, and each and every one of these problems, is decidable in the braid group $\mathbf{B}_n$ if and only if $n \leq 3$, which answers an open problem of Potapov (2013). Our results also generalize and extend results of Lohrey & Steinberg (2008) who classified right-angled Artin groups with decidable submonoid (and rational subset) membership problem.

Characterising large-type Artin groups

Abstract:We show that the class of large-type Artin groups is invariant under isomorphism, in stark contrast with the corresponding situation for Coxeter groups. We obtain this result by providing a purely algebraic characterisation of large-type Artin groups (i.e. independent of the presentation graph). As a corollary, we completely describe the Artin groups isomorphic to a given large-type Artin group, and characterise those large-type Artin groups that are rigid.

Abstract:In this article, we study homomorphisms between Artin groups that belong to two generic classes. For XL-type Artin groups over complete graphs, we describe all possible homomorphisms with sufficiently large image, and prove in particular that such groups are both hopfian and co-hopfian. For Artin groups with all labels at least $6$, we completely characterise in terms of the presentation graph when these groups have a finite outer automorphism group, as well as when they are co-hopfian. Moreover, when the presentation graph has no cut-vertex, we provide a generating set for their automorphism group.

Abstract:We generalize to (certain) Artin groups some results previously known for right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs). First, we generalize a result by Droms, B. Servatius, and H. Servatius, and prove that the derived subgroup of an Artin group is free if and only if the group is coherent. Second, coherent Artin groups over non complete graphs split as free amalgamated products along free abelian subgroups, and we extend to arbitrary Artin groups admitting such a splitting a recent result by Casals-Ruiz and the first author on finitely generated normal subgroups of RAAGs. Finally, we use splittings of even Artin groups of FC-type to generalize results of Minasyan and Osin on acylindrical hyperbolicity of their subgroups.

Rigidity and classification results for large-type Artin groups

Abstract:We compute the automorphism group of the intersection graph of many large-type Artin groups. This graph is an analogue of the curve graph of mapping class groups but in the context of Artin groups. As an application, we deduce a number of rigidity and classification results for these groups, including computation of outer automorphism groups, commensurability classification, quasi-isometric rigidity, measure equivalence rigidity, orbit equivalence rigidity, rigidity of lattice embedding, and rigidity of cross-product von Neumann algebra.

Right-angled Artin groups as normal subgroups of mapping class groups

Abstract:We construct the first examples of normal subgroups of mapping class groups that are isomorphic to non-free right-angled Artin groups. Our construction also gives normal, non-free right-angled Artin subgroups of other groups, such as braid groups and pure braid groups, as well as many subgroups of the mapping class group, such as the Torelli subgroup. Our work recovers and generalizes the seminal result of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin, which gives free, purely pseudo-Anosov normal subgroups of mapping class groups. We give two applications of our methods: (1) we produce an explicit proper normal subgroup of the mapping class group that is not contained in any level $m$ congruence subgroup, and (2) we produce an explicit example of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class with the property that all of its even powers have free normal closure and its odd powers normally generate the entire mapping class group. The technical theorem at the heart of our work is a new version of the windmill apparatus of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin, which is tailored to the setting of group actions on the projection complexes of Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara.

Abstract:An integral framed, closed pure n-braid B' in the 3-sphere describes a positive Artin presentation, if the braid B can be put on a disk with holes such that each relation describes a positive path and these paths are disjoint. In the present paper we classify the closed, pure n-braids B' in the 3-sphere, such that B represents a positive Artin presentation. Also we prove that if such B describes a positive Artin presentation then B' is strongly invertible. Such positive Artin presentation give us the fundamental group of closed, connected and orientable 3-manifolds M, and in fact, by giving an example, we show that there exist 3-manifolds whose fundamental group does not admit a positive Artin presentation.

Dynamics of endomorphisms of algebraic groups

Abstract:Let $\sigma$ denote an endomorphism of a smooth algebraic group $G$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field, and assume all iterates of $\sigma$ have finitely many fixed points. Steinberg gave a formula for the number of fixed points of $\sigma$ (and hence of all of its iterates $\sigma^n$) in the semisimple case, leading to a representation of its Artin-Mazur zeta function as a rational function. We generalise this to an arbitrary (smooth) algebraic group $G$, where the number of fixed points $\sigma_n$ of $\sigma^n$ can depend on $p$-adic properties of $n$. We axiomatise the structure of the sequence $(\sigma_n)$ via the concept of a `finite-adelically distorted' (FAD-)sequence. Such sequences also occur in topological dynamics, and our subsequent results about zeta functions and asymptotic counting of orbits apply equally well in that situation; for example, to $S$-integer dynamical systems, additive cellular automata and other compact abelian groups. We prove dichotomies for the associated Artin-Mazur zeta function, and study the analogue of the Prime Number Theorem for the function counting periodic orbits of length $\leq N$. For an algebraic group $G$ we express the error term via the $\ell$-adic cohomological zeta function of $G$.

Abstract:Abstract We consider ‐invariants of Artin groups that satisfy the ‐conjecture. These invariants determine the cohomological finiteness conditions of subgroups that contain the derived subgroup. We extend a known result for even Artin groups of FC‐type, giving a sufficient condition for a character to belong to . We also prove some partial converses. As applications, we prove that the ‐conjecture holds true when there is a prime that divides for any edge with even label , we generalize to Artin groups the homological version of the Bestvina–Brady theorem and we compute the ‐invariants of all irreducible spherical and affine Artin groups and triangle Artin groups, which provide a complete classification of the and properties of their derived subgroup.

Short hierarchically hyperbolic groups II: quotients and the Hopf property for Artin groups

Abstract:We prove that most Artin groups of large and hyperbolic type are Hopfian, meaning that every self-epimorphism is an isomorphism. The class covered by our result is generic, in the sense of Goldsborough-Vaskou. Moreover, assuming the residual finiteness of certain hyperbolic groups with an explicit presentation, we get that all large and hyperbolic type Artin groups are residually finite. We also show that most quotients of the five-holed sphere mapping class group are hierarchically hyperbolic, up to taking powers of the normal generators of the kernels. The main tool we use to prove both results is a Dehn-filling-like procedure for short hierarchically hyperbolic groups (these also include e.g. non-geometric 3-manifolds, and triangle- and square-free RAAGs).

Abstract:Let n≥3 . In this paper, we show that for any abelian subgroup G of Sn the crystallographic group Bn/[Pn,Pn] has Bieberbach subgroups ΓG with holonomy group G . Using this approach, we obtain an explicit description of the holonomy representation of the Bieberbach group ΓG . As an application, when the holonomy group is cyclic of odd order, we study the holonomy representation of ΓG and determine the existence of Anosov diffeomorphisms and Kähler geometry of the flat manifold XΓG with fundamental group the Bieberbach group ΓG≤Bn/[Pn,Pn] .

The Artin monoid Cayley graph

Abstract:In this paper we investigate properties of the Artin monoid Cayley graph. This is the Cayley graph of an Artin group $A_\Gamma$ with respect to the (infinite) generating set given by the associated Artin monoid $A^+_\Gamma$. In a previous paper, the first three authors introduced a monoid Deligne complex and showed that this complex is contractible for all Artin groups. In this paper, we show that the Artin monoid Cayley graph is quasi-isometric to a modification of the Deligne complex for $A_\Gamma$ obtained by coning off translates of the monoid Deligne complex. We then address the question of when the monoid Cayley graph has infinite diameter. We conjecture that this holds for all Artin groups of infinite type. We give a set of criteria that imply infinite diameter, and using existing solutions to the word problem for large-type Artin groups and 3-free Artin groups, we prove that the conjecture holds for any Artin group containing a 3-generator subgroup of one of these two types.
