Wave turbulence: A solvable problem applied to Navier-Stokes

Abstract:Wave turbulence and eddy turbulence are the two regimes that we may encounter in nature. The attention of fluid mechanics being mainly focused on incompressible hydrodynamics, it is usually the second regime that is treated in books, whereas waves are often present in geophysics and astrophysics. In these lecture notes, I present the theory of wave turbulence which is free from the closure problem encountered in eddy turbulence. Basically, the wave amplitude is introduced in a multiple time scale method as a small parameter to derive the so-called kinetic equations from which exact results can be obtained (power-law spectra, direction of the cascade, Kolmogorov's constant) and compared with the data. Two hydrodynamic applications are considered with capillary waves and inertial waves, the first leading to isotropic turbulence and the second to anisotropic turbulence.

Gravitational wave turbulence: a multiple time scale approach for quartic wave interactions

Abstract:Wave turbulence is by nature a multiple time scale problem for which there is a natural asymptotic closure. The main result of this analytical theory is the kinetic equation that describes the long-time statistical behaviour of such turbulence composed of a set of weakly nonlinear interacting waves. In the case of gravitational waves, it involves four-wave interactions and two invariants, energy and wave action. Although the kinetic equation of gravitational wave turbulence has been published with the Hadad-Zakharov metric, along with their physical properties, the detailed derivation has not been shown. Following the seminal work of Newell (1968) for gravity/surface waves, we present the multiple time scale method, rarely used to derive the kinetic equations, and clarify the underlying assumptions and methodology. This formalism is applied to a wave amplitude equation obtained using an Eulerian approach. It leads to a kinetic equation slightly different from the one originally published, with a wave equation obtained using a Hamiltonian approach; we verify, however, that the two formulations are fully compatible when the number of symmetries used is the same. We also show that the exact solutions (Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectra) exhibit the same power laws and cascade directions. Furthermore, the use of the multiple time scale method reveals that the system retains the memory of the initially condition up to a certain level (second order) of development in time.

Nonlinear two-dimensional water waves with arbitrary vorticity

Abstract:We consider the two-dimensional water-wave problem with a general non-zero vorticity field in a fluid volume with a flat bed and a free surface. The nonlinear equations of motion for the chosen surface and volume variables are expressed with the aid of the Dirichlet-Neumann operator and the Green function of the Laplace operator in the fluid domain. Moreover, we provide new explicit expressions for both objects. The field of a point vortex and its interaction with the free surface is studied as an example. In the small-amplitude long-wave Boussinesq and KdV regimes, we obtain appropriate systems of coupled equations for the dynamics of the point vortex and the time evolution of the free surface variables.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a precise definition of algebraic traveling wave solution for general n-th order partial differential equations. All examples of explicit traveling waves known by the authors fall in this category. Our main result proves that algebraic traveling waves exist if and only if an associated n- dimensional first order ordinary differential system has some invariant algebraic curve. As a paradigmatic application we prove that, for the celebrated Fisher- Kolmogorov equation, the only algebraic traveling waves solutions are the ones found in 1979 by Ablowitz and Zeppetella. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that this type of results have been obtained.

The system of the vortex-like structures: the viewpoint on a turbulence modelling

Abstract:In this study we suggest new approach to turbulence modeling. To develop this approach, we construct the set of the vortex-like dynamical systems evolving in the space $E_3$. These systems are constructed using the AKNS hierarchy so that they generalize thin closed vortex filament described in the local induction approximation. We construct and investigate the Hamiltonian dynamics of these systems in terms of the non - standard variables. We formulate the principles of quantization these systems focusing on the quantum description of the filaments with linearized dynamics. To describe the energy of vortex-like structures, we apply a new method based on the use of the central extended Galilei group. In a special case, we calculate the energy levels of a system of quantized vortices. The proposed approach makes it possible to describe both the interaction of such vortex - like filaments and the processes of their creation and annihilation in a natural way. As a result, we have constructed a quantum turbulent flow model that demonstrates the relationship between stochastic and integrable dynamics.

On the 3-Dimensional Water Waves System above a Flat Bottom

Abstract:As a starting point for studying the long-time behavior of the 3-dimensional water waves system in the flat bottom setting, we try to improve the understanding of the Dirichlet-Neumann operator in this set-up. As an application, we study the 3-dimensional gravity waves system and derive a new energy estimate of L-2-L-infinity type, which has good structure in the L-infinity-type space. This has been used in our Ph.D. thesis (2016) to prove the global regularity of the 3-dimensional gravity waves system for suitably small initial data.
A multiple time scale approach for anisotropic inertial wave turbulence

Abstract:Wave turbulence is the study of the long-time statistical behaviour of equations describing a set of weakly non-linear interacting waves. Such a theory, which has a natural asymptotic closure, allows us to probe the nature of turbulence more deeply than the exact Kolmogorov laws by rigorously proving the direction of the cascade and the existence of an inertial range, predicting stationary spectra for conserved quantities, or evaluating the Kolmogorov constant. An emblematic example is given by fast rotating fluids for which a wave turbulence theory has been derived by Galtier (2003). This work involves nontrivial analytical developments for a problem that is anisotropic by nature. We propose here a new path for the derivation of the kinetic equation by using the anisotropy at the beginning of the analysis. We show that the helicity basis is not necessary to obtain the wave amplitude equation for the canonical variables that involve a combination of poloidal and toroidal fields. The multiple time scale method adapted to this anisotropic problem is then used to derive the kinetic equation which is the same as the original work when anisotropy is eventually taken into account. This result proves the commutativity between asymptotic closure and anisotropy. In addition, the multiple time scale method informs us that the kinetic equation can be derived without imposing restrictions on the probability distribution of the wave amplitude such as quasi-Gaussianity, or on the phase such as random phase approximation which naturally occurs dynamically.

Stable Envelopes, Vortex Moduli Spaces, and Verma Modules

Abstract:We explicitly construct K-theoretic and elliptic stable envelopes for certain moduli spaces of vortices, and apply this to enumerative geometry of rational curves in these varieties. In particular, we identify the quantum difference equations in equivariant variables with quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, and give their monodromy in terms of geometric elliptic R-matrices. A novel geometric feature in these constructions is that the varieties under study are not holomorphic symplectic, yet nonetheless have representation-theoretic significance. In physics, they originate from 3d supersymmetric gauge theories with $\mathcal{N} = 2$ rather than $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetry. We discuss an application of the results to the ramified version of the quantum q-Langlands correspondence of Aganagic, Frenkel, and Okounkov.

Exponential asymptotics and the generation of free-surface flows by submerged line vortices

Abstract:There has been significant recent interest in the study of water waves coupled with non-zero vorticity. We derive analytical approximations for the exponentially-small free-surface waves generated in two-dimensions by one or several submerged point vortices when driven at low Froude numbers. The vortices are fixed in place, and a boundary-integral formulation in the arclength along the surface allows the study of nonlinear waves and strong point vortices. We demonstrate that for a single point vortex, techniques in exponential asymptotics prescribe the formation of waves in connection with the presence of Stokes lines originating from the vortex. When multiple point vortices are placed within the fluid, trapped waves may occur, which are confined to lie between the vortices. We also demonstrate that for the two-vortex problem, the phenomenon of trapped waves occurs for a countably infinite set of values of the Froude number. This work will form a basis for other asymptotic investigations of wave-structure interactions where vorticity plays a key role in the formation of surface waves.

Abstract:Recent results from real algebraic geometry and the theory of polynomial optimization are related in a new framework to the existence question of multivariate tight wavelet frames whose generators have at least one vanishing moment. Namely, several equivalent formulations of the so-called Unitary Extension Principle by Ron and Shen are interpreted in terms of hermitian sums of squares of certain nonnegative trigonometric polynomials and in terms of semi-definite programming. The latter together with the recent results in algebraic geometry and semi-definite programming allow us to answer affirmatively the long standing open question of the existence of such tight wavelet frames in dimension $d=2$; we also provide numerically efficient methods for checking their existence and actual construction in any dimension. We exhibit a class of counterexamples in dimension $d=3$ showing that, in general, the UEP property is not sufficient for the existence of tight wavelet frames. On the other hand we provide stronger sufficient conditions for the existence of tight wavelet frames in dimension $d > 3$ and illustrate our results by several examples.

Abstract:We start from the remark that in wave turbulence theory, exemplified by the cubic twodimensional Schr{ö}dinger equation (NLS) on the real plane, the regularity of the resonant manifold is linked with dispersive properties of the equation and thus with scattering phenomena. In contrast with classical analysis starting with a dynamics on a large periodic box, we propose to study NLS set on the real plane using the dispersive effects, by considering the time evolution operator in various time scales for deterministic and random initial data. By considering periodic functions embedded in the whole space by gaussian truncation, this allows explicit calculations and we identify two different regimes where the operators converges towards the kinetic operator but with different form of convergence.

Abstract:Patchworking theorems serve as a basic element of the correspondence between tropical and algebraic curves, which is a core of the tropical enumerative geometry. We present a new version of a patchworking theorem which relates plane tropical curves with complex and real algebraic curves having prescribed multiple points. It can be used to compute Welschinger invariants of non-toric Del Pezzo surfaces.

Abstract:We have found an infinite dimensional manifold of exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes loop equation for the Wilson loop in decaying Turbulence in arbitrary dimension $d >2$. This solution family is equivalent to a fractal curve in complex space $\mathbb C^d$ with random steps parametrized by $N$ Ising variables $\sigma_i=\pm 1$, in addition to a rational number $\frac{p}{q}$ and an integer winding number $r$, related by $\sum \sigma_i = q r$. This equivalence provides a dual theory describing a strong turbulent phase of the Navier-Stokes flow in $\mathbb R_d$ space as a random geometry in a different space, like ADS/CFT correspondence in gauge theory. From a mathematical point of view, this theory implements a stochastic solution of the unforced Navier-Stokes equations. For a theoretical physicist, this is a quantum statistical system with integer-valued parameters, satisfying some number theory constraints. Its long-range interaction leads to critical phenomena when its size $N \rightarrow \infty$ or its chemical potential $\mu \rightarrow 0$. The system with fixed $N$ has different asymptotics at odd and even $N\rightarrow \infty$, but the limit $\mu \rightarrow 0$ is well defined. The energy dissipation rate is analytically calculated as a function of $\mu$ using methods of number theory. It grows as $\nu/\mu^2$ in the continuum limit $\mu \rightarrow 0$, leading to anomalous dissipation at $\mu \propto \sqrt{\nu} \to 0$. The same method is used to compute all the local vorticity distribution, which has no continuum limit but is renormalizable in the sense that infinities can be absorbed into the redefinition of the parameters. The small perturbation of the fixed manifold satisfies the linear equation we solved in a general form. This perturbation decays as $t^{-\lambda}$, with a continuous spectrum of indexes $\lambda$ in the local limit $\mu \to 0$.

Abstract:Turbulence in a system of nonlinearly interacting waves is referred to as wave turbulence. It has been known since seminal work by Kolmogorov, that turbulent dynamics is controlled by a directional energy flux through the wavelength scales. We demonstrate that an energy cascade in wave turbulence can be bi-directional, that is, can simultaneously flow towards large and small wavelength scales from the pumping scales at which it is injected. This observation is in sharp contrast to existing experiments and wave turbulence theory where the energy flux only flows in one direction. We demonstrate that the bi-directional energy cascade changes the energy budget in the system and leads to formation of large-scale, large-amplitude waves similar to oceanic rogue waves. To study surface wave turbulence, we took advantage of capillary waves on a free, weakly charged surface of superfluid helium He-II at temperature 1.7K. Although He-II demonstrates non-classical thermomechanical effects and quantized vorticity, waves on its surface are identical to those on a classical Newtonian fluid with extremely low viscosity. The possibility of directly driving a charged surface by an oscillating electric field and the low viscosity of He-II have allowed us to isolate the surface dynamics and study nonlinear surface waves in a range of frequencies much wider than in experiments with classical fluids.

Irrotationality of Water Waves and Topography

Abstract:Most theoretical and numerical results regarding water waves rely on the irrotationality of the flow in order to simplify significantly the mathematical formulation. This assumption is rarely discussed in details. In this work we investigate the well-foundedness of this important hypothesis using numerical simulations of the free-surface Navier-Stokes equation, using a scheme introduced in Riquier and Dormy (2024). We show that, in the presence of an irregular bottom, a gravity wave of non-negligible height can effectively destabilise the bottom boundary layer, stripping off vortices into the main flow. As a vortex approaches the surface the solution of the Navier-Stokes flow in the limit of vanishing viscosity is shown to differ from the inviscid Euler solution.
