Abstract:Distinct behavior of decaying particles in true and false vacua of the theory can lead to enhanced generation of baryon asymmetry, a scenario we call \textit{phase separation baryogenesis}. We demonstrate that for leptogenesis this naturally allows for right handed neutrinos to generate resonantly-enhanced lepton asymmetry without fine-tuning of their masses as in typical theories. Our mechanism allows for a variety of neutrino mass hierarchies and hence possible novel connections with observations. We present a concrete realization in a minimal model with a scalar field undergoing a phase transition.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the problem of baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU). Specifically, the authors propose a new mechanism—phase separation baryogenesis, which utilizes the significant differences in the behavior of decaying particles in true vacuum and false vacuum states to enhance the generation of baryon asymmetry. Within the framework of the Standard Model (SM), it is difficult to explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe solely through its internal mechanisms. Therefore, researchers have proposed various new physical mechanisms beyond the Standard Model. This paper focuses on the framework of leptogenesis, particularly resonant leptogenesis. Traditional theories require the masses of right-handed neutrinos (RHN) to be very close to each other to produce a resonant effect, but this mass difference often requires fine-tuning. The mechanism proposed in this paper does not require such fine-tuning. By considering that in the false vacuum state, RHNs can naturally produce resonantly enhanced lepton asymmetry. When the Universe undergoes a first-order phase transition, RHNs are trapped within thermal balls formed in the false vacuum regions. These RHNs within the thermal balls have a constant temperature, and due to thermal corrections, resonant lepton asymmetry is generated. In the true vacuum state, RHNs can form a hierarchical mass spectrum, thereby relaxing the requirements for resonance conditions. Moreover, this mechanism allows for a wide range of neutrino mass hierarchies, which is consistent with current neutrino observations. Therefore, this phase separation baryogenesis mechanism not only solves the fine-tuning problem required for resonant leptogenesis but also potentially provides new possibilities for the parameter space of leptogenesis at low energy scales.
