Abstract:We establish a Galois-theoretic trichotomy governing Diophantine stability for genus $0$ curves. We use it to prove that the curve associated to the Hilbert symbol is Diophantine stable with probability $1$. Our asymptotic formula for the second order term exhibits strong bias towards instability.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field and $\ell\geq 5$ be a prime number. Mazur and Rubin introduced the notion of \emph{diophantine stability} for a variety $X_{/K}$ at a prime $\ell$. We show that there is a positive density set of elliptic curves $E_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ of rank $1$, such that $E_{/K}$ is diophantine stable at $\ell$. This result has implications to Hilbert's tenth problem for number rings.

Abstract:We carry out a survey on curves defined over finite fields that are Diophantine stable; that is, with the property that the set of points of the curve is not altered under a proper field extension. First, we derive some general results of such curves and then we analyze several families of curves that happen to be Diophantine stable.

Abstract:In previous works, the authors investigated the relationships between linear stability of a generated linear series $|V|$ on a curve $C$, and slope stabillity of the vector bundle $M_{V,L} := \ker (V \otimes \mathcal{O}_C \to L)$. In particular, the second named author and L. Stoppino conjecture that, for a complete linear system $|L|$, linear (semi)stability is equivalent to slope (semi)stability of $M_V$, and the first and third named authors proved that this conjecture holds for hyperelliptic and for generic curves. In this work we provide a counterexample to this conjecture on any smooth plane curve of degree $7$.

Abstract:We prove a homological stability theorem for families of discrete groups (e.g. mapping class groups, automorphism groups of free groups, braid groups) with coefficients in a sequence of irreducible algebraic representations of arithmetic groups. The novelty is that the stable range is independent of the choice of representation. Combined with earlier work of Bergström--Diaconu--Petersen--Westerland this proves the Conrey--Farmer--Keating--Rubinstein--Snaith predictions for all moments of the family of quadratic $L$-functions over function fields, for sufficiently large odd prime powers.

Discriminant-Stability in $p$-adic Lie Towers of Number Fields

Abstract:In this paper we consider a tower of number fields $\cdots \supseteq K(1) \supseteq K(0) \supseteq K$ arising naturally from a continuous $p$-adic representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/K)$, referred to as a $p$-adic Lie tower over $K$. A recent conjecture of Daqing Wan hypothesizes, for certain $p$-adic Lie towers of curves over $\mathbb{F}_p$, a stable (polynomial) growth formula for the genus. Here we prove the analogous result in characteristic zero, namely: the $p$-adic valuation of the discriminant of the extension $K(i)/K$ is given by a polynomial in $i,p^i$ for $i$ sufficiently large. This generalizes a previously known result on discriminant-growth in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers of local fields of characteristic zero.

Abstract:We study an infinite family of $j$-invariant zero elliptic curves $E_{D}:y^{2}=x^{3}+16D$ and their $\lambda$-isogenous curves $E_{D'}:y^{2}=x^{3}-27\cdot16D$, where $D$ and $D' = -3D$ are fundamental discriminants of a specific form, and $\lambda$ is an isogeny of degree $3$. A result of Honda guarantees that for our discriminants $D$, the quadratic number field $K_{D} = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ always has non-trivial 3-class group. We prove a series of results related to the set of rational points $E_{D'}(\mathbb{Q}) \setminus \lambda(E_{D}(\mathbb{Q}))$, and the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of irreducible integral binary cubic forms of discriminant $D$. By assuming finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group, we derive a parity result between the rank of $E_{D}$ and the rank of its $3$-Selmer group, and we establish lower and upper bounds for the rank of our elliptic curves. Finally, we give explicit classes of genus-$1$ curves that correspond to irreducible integral binary cubic forms of discriminant $D=48035713$, and we show that every curve in these classes should violate the Hasse Principle.

Abstract:We prove that the general linear groups of the integers, Gaussian integers, and Eisenstein integers satisfy homological stability of slope 1 when using $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$-coefficients and of slope $2/3$ when using $\mathbb{Z}$-coefficients.

Abstract:In this note, we give sufficient conditions for the (semi)stability of a hypersurface $H$ of $\mathbb{P}^N_k$ in terms of its degree $d$, the maximal multiplicity $\delta$ of its singularities, and the dimension $s$ of its singular locus. For instance, we show that $H$ is semistable when $d \geq \delta \min (N+1, s+3)$. The proof relies in particular on Benoist's lower bound for the dimension of the intersection of the singular locus $H_{\mathrm{sing}}$ of $H$ with some linear subspace of $\mathbb{P}^N_k$ associated to a one-parameter subgroup $\lambda$ of $\mathrm{SL}_{N+1, k}$, in terms of the numerical data in the Hilbert-Mumford criterion applied to $\lambda$ and to an equation $F_H$ of $H$.

Homological stability for general linear groups over Dedekind domains

Abstract:We prove a new kind of homological stability theorem for automorphism groups of finitely-generated projective modules over Dedekind domains, which takes into account all possible stabilisation maps between these, rather than only stabilisation by the free module of rank 1. We show the same kind of stability holds for Clausen and Jansen's reductive Borel--Serre spaces.

Abstract:DeMarco, Krieger, and Ye conjectured that there is a uniform bound B , depending only on the degree d , so that any pair of holomorphic maps with degree will either share all of their preperiodic points or have at most in common. Here we show that this uniform bound holds for a Zariski open and dense set in the space of all pairs, , for each degree . The proof involves a combination of arithmetic intersection theory and complex-dynamical results, especially as developed recently by Gauthier and Vigny, Yuan and Zhang, and Mavraki and Schmidt. In addition, we present alternate proofs of the main results of DeMarco, Krieger, and Ye [ Uniform Manin-Mumford for a family of genus 2 curves , Ann. of Math. (2) 191 (2020), 949–1001; Common preperiodic points for quadratic polynomials , J. Mod. Dyn. 18 (2022), 363–413] and of Poineau [ Dynamique analytique sur II : Écart uniforme entre Lattès et conjecture de Bogomolov-Fu-Tschinkel , Preprint (2022), arXiv:2207.01574 [math.NT]]. In fact, we prove a generalization of a conjecture of Bogomolov, Fu, and Tschinkel in a mixed setting of dynamical systems and elliptic curves.

Abstract:Let \mathbb{K} be an algebraically closed field, X a smooth projective variety over \mathbb{K} and f \colon X\rightarrow X a dominant regular morphism. Let N^{i}(X) be the group of algebraic cycles, of codimension i , modulo numerical equivalence. Let \chi (f) be the spectral radius of the pullback f^{*} \colon H^{*}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{l})\rightarrow H^{*}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{l}) on l -adic cohomology groups, and \lambda (f) the spectral radius of the pullback f^{*} \colon N^{*}(X)\rightarrow N^{*}(X) . We prove in this paper, by using consequences of Deligne's proof of Weil's Riemann hypothesis, that \chi (f)=\lambda (f) . This answers affirmatively a question posed by Esnault and Srinivas. Consequently, the algebraic entropy \log \chi (f) of an endomorphism is both a birational invariant and étale invariant. More general results are proven if either \mathbb{K}=\bar{\mathbb{F}}_{p} or the Standard Conjecture D holds (this applies specially to Abelian varieties). Among other results in the paper, we show that if some properties of dynamical degrees, known in the case \mathbb{K}=\mathbb{C} , hold in positive characteristics, then simple proofs of Weil's Riemann hypothesis follow. More generally, the analogy in positive characteristic of Serre's famous result on polarized endomorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds also follows.

Groebner techniques for low degree Hilbert stability

Abstract:We give a method for verifying, by a symbolic calculation, the stability or semistability with respect to a linearization of fixed, possibly small, degree $m$, of the Hilbert point of a scheme $X \in {\mathbb P}(V)$ having a suitably large automorphism group. We also implement our method and apply it to analyze the stability of bicanonical models of certain curves. Our examples are very special, but they arise naturally in the log minimal model program for $\bar{\mathcal M}_g$. In some examples, this connection provides a check of our computations; in others, the computations confirm predictions about conjectural stages of the program.

Abstract:Generalizing Fujita-Odaka invariant, we define a function δ ˜ on a set of generalized b-divisors over a smooth Fano variety. This allows us to provide a new characterization of uniform K-stability. A key role is played by a new Riemann-Zariski formalism for K-stability. For any generalized b-divisor D, we introduce a (uniform) D -log K-stability notion. We prove that the existence of a unique Kähler-Einstein metric with prescribed singularities implies this new K-stability notion when the prescribed singularities are given by the generalized b-divisor D. We connect the existence of a unique Kähler-Einstein metric with prescribed singularities to a uniform D -log Ding-stability notion which we introduce. We show that these conditions are satisfied exactly when δ ˜ ( D ) > 1 , extending to the D-log setting the δ-valuative criterion of Fujita-Odaka and Blum-Jonsson. Finally we prove the strong openness of the uniform D-log Ding stability as a consequence of the strong continuity of δ ˜ .

Abstract:Suppose that F:(Rn×Rd,0)→(Rp×Rd,0) is a smoothly stable, Rd-level preserving germ which unfolds f:(Rn,0)→(Rp,0); then f is smoothly stable if and only if we can find a pair of smooth retractions r:(Rn+d,0)→(Rn,0) and s:(Rp+d,0)→(Rp,0) such that f∘r=s∘F. Unfortunately, we do not know whether f will be topologically stable if we can find a pair of continuous retractions r and s.The class of extremely tame (E-tame) retractions, introduced by du Plessis and Wall, are defined by their nice geometric properties, which are sufficient to ensure that f is topologically stable.In this article, we present the E-tame retractions and their relation with topological stability, survey recent results by the author concerning their construction, and illustrate the use of our techniques by constructing E-tame retractions for certain germs belonging to the E- and Z-series of singularities.

Abstract:On a normal projective variety the locus of $\mu$-stable bundles that remain $\mu$-stable on all Galois covers prime to the characteristic is open in the moduli space of Gieseker semi-stable sheaves. On a smooth projective curve of genus at least 2 this locus is big in the moduli space of stable bundles, i.e., its complement has codimension at least 2.

Abstract:Let $\alpha : X \to Y$ be a general degree $r$ primitive map of nonsingular, irreducible, projective curves over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero or larger than $r$. Abstract:We prove that the space of complex irreducible polynomials of degree $d$ in $n$ variables satisfies two forms of homological stability: first, its cohomology stabilizes as $d$ increases, and second, its compactly supported cohomology stabilizes as $n$ increases. Our topological results are inspired by counting results over finite fields due to Carlitz and Hyde.

Abstract:By introducing the notion of distributive constant for a family of closed subschemes, we establish a general form of the second main theorem for algebraic nondegenerate meromorphic mappings from a generalized $p$-Parabolic manifold into a projective variety with arbitrary families of closed subschemes. As its consequence, we give a second main theorem for such meromorphic mappings intersecting arbitrary hypersurfaces with an explicitly truncation level for the counting functions.

Abstract:For all infinite rings $R$ that are finitely generated over $\mathbb{Z}$, we show that Hilbert's tenth problem has a negative answer. This is accomplished by constructing elliptic curves $E$ without rank growth in certain quadratic extensions $L/K$. To achieve such a result unconditionally, our key innovation is to use elliptic curves $E$ with full rational $2$-torsion which allows us to combine techniques from additive combinatorics with $2$-descent.
