Abstract:This paper presents a curriculum, "AI Literacy for All," to promote an interdisciplinary understanding of AI, its socio-technical implications, and its practical applications for all levels of education. With the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), there is a need for AI literacy that goes beyond the traditional AI education curriculum. AI literacy has been conceptualized in various ways, including public literacy, competency building for designers, conceptual understanding of AI concepts, and domain-specific upskilling. Most of these conceptualizations were established before the public release of Generative AI (Gen-AI) tools like ChatGPT. AI education has focused on the principles and applications of AI through a technical lens that emphasizes the mastery of AI principles, the mathematical foundations underlying these technologies, and the programming and mathematical skills necessary to implement AI solutions. In AI Literacy for All, we emphasize a balanced curriculum that includes technical and non-technical learning outcomes to enable a conceptual understanding and critical evaluation of AI technologies in an interdisciplinary socio-technical context. The paper presents four pillars of AI literacy: understanding the scope and technical dimensions of AI, learning how to interact with Gen-AI in an informed and responsible way, the socio-technical issues of ethical and responsible AI, and the social and future implications of AI. While it is important to include all learning outcomes for AI education in a Computer Science major, the learning outcomes can be adjusted for other learning contexts, including, non-CS majors, high school summer camps, the adult workforce, and the public. This paper advocates for a shift in AI literacy education to offer a more interdisciplinary socio-technical approach as a pathway to broaden participation in AI.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is that current artificial intelligence (AI) education mainly focuses on the technical level and lacks attention to the socio - technical level, resulting in educational content that is not comprehensive enough to meet the needs of learners from different backgrounds and age groups. With the rapid development of AI technology and its wide application in daily life, it has become particularly important to improve the public's AI literacy. However, most of the existing AI education frameworks were established before the emergence of generative AI (Gen - AI) tools such as ChatGPT. The popularization of these tools has made it easier for non - professionals to access and use AI, which has exposed an important gap in the existing education model. To this end, the paper proposes an interdisciplinary socio - technical AI literacy course - "AI Literacy for All", aiming to provide an educational plan with balanced technical and non - technical learning outcomes, enabling learners to understand and critically evaluate AI technology in an interdisciplinary socio - technical context. This course constructs AI literacy through four pillars: 1. **Understanding the scope and technical dimensions of AI**: Covers basic concepts of AI, machine learning, knowledge representation methods, etc., helping learners establish a basic understanding of AI technology. 2. **Learning how to interact with generative AI in an informed and responsible manner**: Teaches learners how to effectively use AI tools such as large - language models, while emphasizing the importance of academic and professional integrity, authorship, and ownership. 3. **Critically examining ethical and socially responsible AI issues in the learning / working environment**: Explores ethical issues in the use of AI, such as algorithmic fairness, data security, etc., and deepens understanding through case studies. 4. **Social and future impacts of AI**: Discusses the impact of AI on public perception, future work, policy - making, etc., as well as the role of AI in promoting sustainable development and community building. The paper also proposes an adjustable AI literacy course framework, which is applicable to different educational stages from K - 12 education to higher education, adult retraining, and public education, ensuring that the learning objectives and teaching methods at each stage can meet the needs of specific groups. In this way, the paper aims to promote the development of AI education in a more comprehensive and inclusive direction to meet the rapidly changing technological environment and social needs.
