Abstract:Kulkarni and Kiyavash recently introduced a new method to establish upper bounds on the size of deletion-correcting codes. This method is based upon tools from hypergraph theory. The deletion channel is represented by a hypergraph whose edges are the deletion balls (or spheres), so that a deletion-correcting code becomes a matching in this hypergraph. Consequently, a bound on the size of such a code can be obtained from bounds on the matching number of a hypergraph. Classical results in hypergraph theory are then invoked to compute an upper bound on the matching number as a solution to a linear-programming problem. The method by Kulkarni and Kiyavash can be applied not only for the deletion channel but also for other error channels. This paper studies this method in its most general setup. First, it is shown that if the error channel is regular and symmetric then this upper bound coincides with the sphere packing bound and thus is called the generalized sphere packing bound. Even though this bound is explicitly given by a linear programming problem, finding its exact value may still be a challenging task. In order to simplify the complexity of the problem, we present a technique based upon graph automorphisms that in many cases reduces the number of variables and constraints in the problem. We then apply this method on specific examples of error channels. We start with the $Z$ channel and show how to exactly find the generalized sphere packing bound for this setup. Next studied is the non-binary limited magnitude channel both for symmetric and asymmetric errors, where we focus on the single-error case. We follow up on the deletion and grain-error channels and show how to improve upon the existing upper bounds for single deletion/error. Finally, we apply this method for projective spaces and find its generalized sphere packing bound for the single-error case.

Abstract:A binary code with covering radius $R$ is a subset $C$ of the hypercube $Q_n=\{0,1\}^n$ such that every $x\in Q_n$ is within Hamming distance $R$ of some codeword $c\in C$, where $R$ is as small as possible. For a fixed coordinate $i\in[n]$, define $C(b,i)$, for $b=0,1$, to be the set of codewords with a $b$ in the $i$th position. Then $C$ is normal if there exists an $i\in[n]$ such that for any $v\in Q_n$, the sum of the Hamming distances from $v$ to $C(0,i)$ and $C(1,i)$ is at most $2R+1$. We newly define what it means for an asymmetric covering code to be normal, and consider the worst case asymptotic densities $\nu^*(R)$ and $\nu^*_+(R)$ of constant radius $R$ symmetric and asymmetric normal covering codes, respectively. Using a probabilistic deletion method, and analysis adapted from previous work by Krivelevich, Sudakov, and Vu, we show that both are bounded above by $e(R\log R + \log R + \log\log R+4)$, giving evidence that minimum size constant radius covering codes could still be normal.

Abstract:BCH codes have been developed for more than sixty years and are widely used in communication systems and data storage. By the BCH bound, the minimum distance of a BCH code is greater than or equal to its designed distance. Generally, it is very hard to determine the true minimum distances of BCH codes. In 2015, Ding et al (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 61(5): 2351-2356) have proposed the conjecture: Let denote the binary narrow-sense primitive BCH code with designed distance , then the minimum distance of is the Bose distance , for odd . In this paper, to determine the minimum distance of ( is odd), we present an algorithm of finding an idempotent as a minimum-weight codeword, which verifies the correctness of conjecture for odd . Then, by using the trace representations of an idempotent and Mattson-Solomon polynomial, we give the proof of conjecture when by Weil sum, and when by MS polynomial.

On Nearly Perfect Covering Codes

Abstract:Nearly perfect packing codes are those codes that meet the Johnson upper bound on the size of error-correcting codes. This bound is an improvement to the sphere-packing bound. A related bound for covering codes is known as the van Wee bound. Codes that meet this bound will be called nearly perfect covering codes. In this paper, such codes with covering radius one will be considered. It will be proved that these codes can be partitioned into three families depending on the smallest distance between neighboring codewords. Some of the codes contained in these families will be completely characterized. Other properties of these codes will be considered too. Construction for codes for each such family will be presented, the weight distribution and the distance distribution of codes from these families are characterized. Finally, extended nearly perfect covering code will be considered and unexpected equivalence classes of codes of the three types will be defined based on the extended codes.

A Generalized Covering Algorithm for Chained Codes

Abstract:The covering radius is a fundamental property of linear codes that characterizes the trade-off between storage and access in linear data-query protocols. The generalized covering radius was recently defined by Elimelech and Schwartz for applications in joint-recovery of linear data-queries. In this work we extend a known bound on the ordinary covering radius to the generalized one for all codes satisfying the chain condition -- a known condition which is satisfied by most known families of codes. Given a generator matrix of a special form, we also provide an algorithm which finds codewords which cover the input vectors within the distance specified by the bound. For the case of Reed-Muller codes we provide efficient construction of such generator matrices, therefore providing a faster alternative to a previous generalized covering algorithm for Reed-Muller codes.

Abstract:BCH codes are an important class of cyclic codes which have applications in satellite communications, DVDs, disk drives, and two-dimensional bar codes. Although BCH codes have been widely studied, their parameters are known for only a few special classes. Recently, Ding et al. made some new progress in BCH codes. However, we still have very limited knowledge on the dimension of BCH codes, not to mention the weight distribution of BCH codes. In this paper, we generalize the results on BCH codes from several previous papers. The dimension of narrow-sense BCH codes of length $\frac{q^m-1}{\lambda}$ with designed distance $2\leq \delta \leq \frac{q^{\lceil(m+1)/2 \rceil}-1}\lambda+1$ is settled, where $\lambda$ is any factor of $q-1$. The weight distributions of two classes of narrow-sense BCH codes of length $\frac{q^m-1}2$ with designed distance $\delta=\frac{(q-1)q^{m-1}-q^{\lfloor(m-1)/2\rfloor}-1}2$ and $\delta=\frac{(q-1)q^{m-1}-q^{\lfloor(m+1)/2\rfloor}-1}2$ are determined. The weight distribution of a class of BCH codes of length $\frac{q^m-1}{q-1}$ is determined. In particular, a subclass of this class of BCH codes is optimal with respect to the Griesmer bound. Some optimal linear codes obtained from this class of BCH codes are characterized.

Abstract:Due to wide applications of BCH codes, the determination of their minimum distance is of great interest. However, this is a very challenging problem for which few theoretical results have been reported in the last four decades. Even for the narrow-sense primitive BCH codes, which form the most well-studied subclass of BCH codes, there are very few theoretical results on the minimum distance. In this paper, we present new results on the minimum distance of narrow-sense primitive BCH codes with special Bose distance. We prove that for a prime power $q$, the $q$-ary narrow-sense primitive BCH code with length $q^m-1$ and Bose distance $q^m-q^{m-1}-q^i-1$, where $\frac{m-2}{2} \le i \le m-\lfloor \frac{m}{3} \rfloor-1$, has minimum distance $q^m-q^{m-1}-q^i-1$. This is achieved by employing the beautiful theory of sets of quadratic forms, symmetric bilinear forms and alternating bilinear forms over finite fields, which can be best described using the framework of association schemes.

Abstract:Let q be a prime power and m a positive integer. Suppose that a≥2 is a factor of qm−1 such that m is the multiplicative order of q modulo n:=qm−1a . Firstly, for m odd and m even, we present some necessary and sufficient conditions on dual-containing non-primitive BCH codes of length n with the maximum designed distances over Fq , respectively. The results show that the maximum designed distances of dual-containing BCH codes in this paper are larger than those in [2, Theorem 3] . Secondly, we explicitly determine the dimensions of some dual-containing non-primitive BCH codes of length n , and finally, we construct some new quantum codes with relatively large minimum distances.

Apparent Distance and a Notion of BCH Multivariate Codes

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying two main problems: 1) computing the apparent distance of an Abelian code and 2) giving a notion of Bose, Ray-Chaudhuri, Hocquenghem (BCH) multivariate code. To do this, we first strengthen the notion of an apparent distance by introducing the notion of a strong apparent distance; then, we present an algorithm to compute the strong apparent distance of an Abelian code, based on some manipulations of hypermatrices associated with its generating idempotent. Our method uses less computations than those given by Camion and Sabin; furthermore, in the bivariate case, the order of computation complexity is reduced from exponential to linear. Then, we use our techniques to develop a notion of a BCH code in the multivariate case, and we extend most of the classical results on cyclic BCH codes. Finally, we apply our method to the design of Abelian codes with maximum dimension with respect to a fixed apparent distance and a fixed length.

Abstract:In this correspondence, we study binary asymmetric error-correcting codes. A general construction for binary asymmetric error-correcting codes is. presented. We show that some previously known lower bounds for binary asymmetric error-correcting codes can be obtained from this general construction. Furthermore, some new lower bounds for binary asymmetric error-correcting codes are obtained from this general construction. These new lower bounds improve the existing ones.
On Covering Codes and Upper Bounds for the Dimension of Simple Games

Abstract:Consider a situation with $n$ agents or players where some of the players form a coalition with a certain collective objective. Simple games are used to model systems that can decide whether coalitions are successful (winning) or not (losing). A simple game can be viewed as a monotone boolean function. The dimension of a simple game is the smallest positive integer $d$ such that the simple game can be expressed as the intersection of $d$ threshold functions where each threshold function uses a threshold and $n$ weights. Taylor and Zwicker have shown that $d$ is bounded from above by the number of maximal losing coalitions. We present two new upper bounds both containing the Taylor/Zwicker-bound as a special case. The Taylor/Zwicker-bound imply an upper bound of ${n \choose n/2}$. We improve this upper bound significantly by showing constructively that $d$ is bounded from above by the cardinality of any binary covering code with length $n$ and covering radius $1$. This result supplements a recent result where Olsen et al. showed how to construct simple games with dimension $|C|$ for any binary constant weight SECDED code $C$ with length $n$. Our result represents a major step in the attempt to close the dimensionality gap for simple games.

Cyclic and BCH Codes whose Minimum Distance Equals their Maximum BCH bound

Abstract:In this paper we study the family of cyclic codes such that its minimum distance reaches the maximum of its BCH bounds. We also show a way to construct cyclic codes with that property by means of computations of some divisors of a polynomial of the form X^n-1. We apply our results to the study of those BCH codes C, with designed distance delta, that have minimum distance d(C)= delta. Finally, we present some examples of new binary BCH codes satisfying that condition. To do this, we make use of two related tools: the discrete Fourier transform and the notion of apparent distance of a code, originally defined for multivariate abelian codes.

Abstract:For locally repairable codes (LRCs), Cadambe and Nlazumdar derived the first field-dependent parameter hound, known as the C-M hound. However, the C-M hound depends on ( an undetermined parameter k(opt)((q)) (n, d). In this paper, a sphere packing approach is developed fir upper hounding the parameter k for [n, k, 61 linear LRCs with locality r. When restricted to the binary field, three upper bounds (i.e., Bound A, Bound B, and Bound C) are derived in an explicit form. More specifically, Bound A holds under the hypothesis that the local repair groups are disjoint and of equal size. Comparing with previous bounds obtained under the same hypothesis, Bound A either covers them as special cases or has an advantage due to its explicit form. Then, the hypothesis is removed in Bound B and Bound C. As the price for explicit thrm, Bound B specially holds for d >= 5 and Bound C for r = 2. Through specific comparisons, we show that Bound B and Bound C both tend to outperform the C-M hound, as n goes large. Moreover, a family of hinary linear LRCs with d >= 6 attaining Bound B are constructed and later extended to a wider range of parameters by a shortening technique. Lastly, most of the bounds and constructions are extended to q-ary LRCs.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider group rings and skew group rings and use them to construct binary quantum error-correcting codes(QECCs, for short). We study three classes of groups: direct product of two cyclic groups, dihedral group, direct product of cyclic group and dihedral group. And several special groups. Using these groups we can get construction matrix of the linear codes over . Then by computer search, we get 12 new binary QECCs with parameters [[40,16,7]], [[42,14,8]], [[48,20,8]], [[50,24,7]], [[54,34,6]], [[55,21,9]], [[60,38,6]], [[60,32,7]], [[70,42,7]], [[72,50,6]], [[75,47,7]], [[75,39,8]]. They both break the best-known lower bound on minimum distance in the Grassl's code tables.

Efficient Algorithms for Constructing Minimum-Weight Codewords in Some Extended Binary BCH Codes

Abstract:We present $O(m^3)$ algorithms for specifying the support of minimum-weight words of extended binary BCH codes of length $n=2^m$ and designed distance $d(m,s,i):=2^{m-1-s}-2^{m-1-i-s}$ for some values of $m,i,s$, where $m$ may grow to infinity. The support is specified as the sum of two sets: a set of $2^{2i-1}-2^{i-1}$ elements, and a subspace of dimension $m-2i-s$, specified by a basis. In some detail, for designed distance $6\cdot 2^j$, we have a deterministic algorithm for even $m\geq 4$, and a probabilistic algorithm with success probability $1-O(2^{-m})$ for odd $m>4$. For designed distance $28\cdot 2^j$, we have a probabilistic algorithm with success probability $\geq 1/3-O(2^{-m/2})$ for even $m\geq 6$. Finally, for designed distance $120\cdot 2^j$, we have a deterministic algorithm for $m\geq 8$ divisible by $4$. We also present a construction via Gold functions when $2i|m$. Our construction builds on results of Kasami and Lin (IEEE T-IT, 1972), who proved that for extended binary BCH codes of designed distance $d(m,s,i)$, the minimum distance equals the designed distance. Their proof makes use of a non-constructive result of Berlekamp (Inform. Contrl., 1970), and a constructive ``down-conversion theorem'' that converts some words in BCH codes to lower-weight words in BCH codes of lower designed distance. Our main contribution is in replacing the non-constructive argument of Berlekamp by a low-complexity algorithm. In one aspect, we extends the results of Grigorescu and Kaufman (IEEE T-IT, 2012), who presented explicit minimum-weight words for designed distance $6$ (and hence also for designed distance $6\cdot 2^j$, by a well-known ``up-conversion theorem''), as we cover more cases of the minimum distance. However, the minimum-weight words we construct are not affine generators for designed distance $>6$.

Abstract:In this paper, parameterized Gallager's first bounding technique (GFBT) is presented by introducing nested Gallager regions, to derive upper bounds on the ML decoding error probability of general codes over AWGN channels. The three well-known bounds, namely, the sphere bound (SB) of Herzberg and Poltyrev, the tangential bound (TB) of Berlekamp, and the tangential-sphere bound (TSB) of Poltyrev, are generalized to general codes without the properties of geometrical uniformity and equal energy. When applied to the binary linear codes, the three generalized bounds are reduced to the conventional ones. The new derivation also reveals that the SB of Herzberg and Poltyrev is equivalent to the SB of Kasami et al., which was rarely cited in the literatures.

Abstract:Motivated by applications to DNA-storage, flash memory, and magnetic recording, we study perfect burst-correcting codes for the limited-magnitude error channel. These codes are lattices that tile the integer grid with the appropriate error ball. We construct two classes of such perfect codes correcting a single burst of length $2$ for $(1,0)$-limited-magnitude errors, both for cyclic and non-cyclic bursts. We also present a generic construction that requires a primitive element in a finite field with specific properties. We then show that in various parameter regimes such primitive elements exist, and hence, infinitely many perfect burst-correcting codes exist.
