Abstract:Wave energy converters (WECs) represent an innovative technology for power generation from renewable sources (marine energy). Although there has been a great deal of research into such devices in recent decades, the power output of a single device has remained low. Therefore, installation in parks is required for economic reasons. The optimal design problem for parks of WECs is challenging since it requires the simultaneous optimization of positions and control parameters. While the literature on this problem usually considers metaheuristic algorithms, we present a novel numerical framework based on a gradient-flow formulation. This framework is capable of solving the optimal design problem for WEC parks. In particular, we use a low-order adaptive Runge-Kutta scheme to integrate the gradient-flow equation and introduce an inexact solution procedure. Here, the tolerances of the linear solver used for projection on the constraint nullspace and of the time-advancing scheme are automatically adapted to avoid over-solving so that the method requires minimal tuning. We then provide the specific details of its application to the considered WEC problem: the goal is to maximize the average power produced by a park, subject to hydrodynamic and dynamic governing equations and to the constraints of available sea area, minimum distance between devices, and limited oscillation amplitude around the undisturbed free surface elevation. A suitable choice of the discrete models allows us to compute analytically the Jacobian of the state problem's residual. Numerical tests with realistic parameters show that the proposed algorithm is efficient, and results of physical interest are obtained.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper This paper aims to address the design optimization problem of Wave Energy Converters (WECs) arrays. Specifically: 1. **Background and Motivation**: - Wave Energy Converters are an innovative technology for generating electricity from ocean energy. - Despite extensive research on such devices in recent years, the power output of individual devices remains low. - Therefore, for economic feasibility, multiple devices need to be installed in arrays. 2. **Main Challenges**: - The design optimization problem of WECs arrays is challenging because it requires simultaneous optimization of device positions and control parameters. - Currently, metaheuristic algorithms are commonly used in the literature to solve this problem. 3. **Proposed Method**: - This paper introduces a new numerical framework based on the gradient flow method. - This framework can solve the optimal design problem of WECs arrays. - Specifically, a low-order adaptive Runge-Kutta scheme is used to integrate the gradient flow equations, and an approximate solution process is introduced. - In this process, the tolerances of the linear solver for projection onto the constraint null space and the time-stepping scheme are automatically adjusted to avoid over-solving, thus minimizing the need for parameter tuning. 4. **Specific Application**: - The goal is to maximize the average power output of the park while satisfying the hydrodynamic and dynamic control equations, as well as constraints on the available sea area, minimum distance between devices, and free surface disturbance amplitude. - By appropriately choosing the discrete model, the Jacobian matrix of the state problem residual can be computed analytically. - Numerical tests show that the proposed algorithm is efficient and yields physically meaningful results. ### Summary The main objective of this paper is to optimize the design of WECs arrays through a new numerical framework based on the gradient flow method to achieve higher energy capture efficiency. This method is more efficient and accurate compared to traditional metaheuristic algorithms.
