Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:We study the connection between multimatroids and moduli spaces of rational curves with cyclic action. Multimatroids are generalizations of matroids and delta-matroids introduced by Bouchet, which naturally arise in topological graph theory. The vantage point of moduli of curves provides a tropical framework for studying multimatroids, generalizing the previous connection between type-A permutohedral varieties (Losev--Manin moduli spaces) and matroids, and the connection between type-B permutohedral varieties (Batyrev--Blume moduli spaces) and delta-matroids. Specifically, we equate a combinatorial nef cone of the moduli space with the space of $\mathbb{R}$-multimatroids, a slight generalization of multimatroids, and we introduce the independence polytopal complex of a multimatroid, whose volume is identified with an intersection number on the moduli space. As an application, for the generating set of the Chow ring of the moduli space consisting of all psi-classes and their pullbacks along certain forgetful maps, we give a combinatorial formula for their intersection numbers by relating to the volumes of independence polytopal complexes of multimatroids.

We characterize when the tropical compactification of the moduli space agrees with the theory of geometric tropicalization. The characterization statement occurs only when the graph is complete multipartite.

Abstract:The intersection numbers of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,m}$ are well-studied and are known to have rich combinatorial structure. We introduce a natural class of these intersection numbers $\omega_{G,g,m}$ indexed by finite simple graphs $G=(V,E)$. In genus zero, these numbers are closely related to several previously-studied quantities, including maximum likelihood degrees in algebraic statistics, counts of regions of certain hyperplane arrangements, and Kapranov degrees. We give two proofs of a simple closed formula $\omega_{G,g,m}=(-1)^{\left\lvert V \right\rvert}\chi_G(-(2g-2+m)),$ where $\chi_G$ is the chromatic polynomial of $G$ -- one proof via intersection theory on moduli spaces of stable curves, and the other using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We discuss several related questions and speculations, including new candidates for the chromatic polynomial of a directed graph.

Abstract:The space $ \ft_n = \C^n/\C $ of $n$ points on the line modulo translation has a natural compactification $ \overline \ft_n $ as a matroid Schubert variety. In this space, pairwise distances between points can be infinite; it is natural to imagine points at infinite distance from each other as living on different projective lines. We call such a configuration of points a ``flower curve'', since we picture the projective lines joined into a flower. Within $ \ft_n $, we have the space $ F_n = \C^n \setminus \Delta / \C $ of $ n$ distinct points. We introduce a natural compatification $ \overline F_n $ along with a map $ \overline F_n \rightarrow \overline \ft_n $, whose fibres are products of genus 0 Deligne-Mumford spaces. We show that both $\overline \ft_n$ and $\overline F_n$, are special fibers of $1$-parameter families whose generic fibers are, respectively, Losev-Manin and Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces of stable genus $0$ curves with $n+2$ marked points.

Abstract:We study the virtual geometry of the moduli spaces of curves and sheaves on K3 surfaces in primitive classes. Equivalences relating the reduced Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces to characteristic numbers of stable pairs moduli spaces are proven. As a consequence, we prove the Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture evaluating $\lambda_g$ integrals (in all genera) in terms of explicit modular forms. Indeed, all K3 invariants in primitive classes are shown to be governed by modular forms. The method of proof is by degeneration to elliptically fibered rational surfaces. New formulas relating reduced virtual classes on K3 surfaces to standard virtual classes after degeneration are needed for both maps and sheaves. We also prove a Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for toric 3-folds. Our approach uses a result of Kiem and Li to produce reduced classes. In Appendix A, we answer a number of questions about the relationship between the Kiem-Li approach, traditional virtual cycles, and symmetric obstruction theories. The interplay between the boundary geometry of the moduli spaces of curves, K3 surfaces, and modular forms is explored in Appendix B by A. Pixton.

Scanning the moduli of smooth hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study the locus of smooth hypersurfaces inside the Hilbert scheme of a smooth projective complex variety. In the spirit of scanning, we construct a map to a continuous section space of a projective bundle, and show that it induces an isomorphism in integral homology in a range of degrees growing with the ampleness of the hypersurfaces. When the ambient variety is a curve, this recovers a result of McDuff about configuration spaces. We compute the rational cohomology of the section space and exhibit a phenomenon of homological stability for hypersurfaces with first Chern class going to infinity. For simply connected varieties, the rational cohomology is shown to agree with the stable cohomology of a moduli space of hypersurfaces, with a peculiar tangential structure, as studied by Galatius and Randal-Williams.

Abstract:For a complex elliptic curve $E$ and a point $p$ of order $n$ on it, the images of the points $p_k=kp$ under the Weierstrass embedding of $E$ into $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$ are collinear if and only if the sum of indices is divisible by $n$. Thus, it provides a realization of a certain matroid. We study this matroid in detail and prove that its realization space is isomorphic (over $\mathbb{C}$) to the modular curve $X_1(n)$, provided $n\geq 10$, which also provides an integral model of $X_1(n)$. In the process, we find a connection to the classical Ceva and Böröczky examples of special point and line configurations. We also discuss the situation for smaller values of $n$.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of rational graphically stable tropical curves and a refinement given by radial alignment. Given a complete multipartite graph $\Gamma$, the moduli space of radially aligned $\Gamma$-stable tropical curves can be given the structure of a balanced fan. This fan structure coincides with the Bergman fan of the cycle matroid of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:Determining the limiting behaviour of the Jacobian as the underlying curve degenerates has been the subject of much interest. For nodal singularities, there are beautiful constructions of Caporaso as well as Pandharipande of compactified universal Jacobians over the moduli space of stable curves. Alexeev later obtained a canonical such compactification by extending the Torelli map out of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$. In contrast, Alexeev and Brunyate proved that the Torelli map does not extend over the cuspidal locus in Schubert's alternative compactification of pseudostable curves.

Holomorphic Curves in Moduli Spaces Are Quasi-Isometrically Immersed

Abstract:A holomorphic curve in moduli spaces is the image of a non-constant holomorphic map from a hyperbolic surface $B$ of type $(g,n)$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_h$ of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $h$. We show that, when all peripheral monodromies are of infinite order, the holomorphic map is a quasi-isometric immersion with parameters depending only on $g$, $n$, $h$ and the systole of $B$. When peripheral monodromies also satisfy an additional condition, we find a lift quasi-isometrically embedding a fundamental polygon of the hyperbolic surface $B$ into the Teichmüller space. We further improve the Parshin-Arakelov finiteness theorem, by proving that there are only finitely many monodromy homomorphisms induced by holomorphic curves of type $(g,n)$ in $\mathcal{M}_h$ where systole is bounded away from $0$, up to equivalence.

Cycle Matroids of Graphings: From Convergence to Duality

Abstract:A recent line of research has concentrated on exploring the links between analytic and combinatorial theories of submodularity, uncovering several key connections between them. In this context, Lovász initiated the study of matroids from an analytic point of view and introduced the cycle matroid of a graphing. Motivated by the limit theory of graphs, the authors introduced a form of right-convergence, called quotient-convergence, for a sequence of submodular setfunctions, leading to a notion of convergence for matroids through their rank functions. In this paper, we study the connection between local-global convergence of graphs and quotient-convergence of their cycle matroids. We characterize the exposed points of associated convex sets, forming an analytic counterpart of matroid independence- and base-polytopes. Finally, we consider dual planar graphings and show that the cycle matroid of one is the cocycle matroid of its dual if and only if the underlying graphings are hyperfinite.

Moduli Space Tilings and Lie-Theoretic Color Factors

Abstract:A detailed understanding of the moduli spaces $X(k,n)$ of $n$ points in projective $k-1$ space is essential to the investigation of generalized biadjoint scalar amplitudes, as discovered by Cachazo, Early, Guevara and Mizera (CEGM) in 2019. But in math, conventional wisdom says that it is completely hopeless due to the arbitrarily high complexity of realization spaces of oriented matroids. In this paper, we nonetheless find a path forward. We present a Lie-theoretic realization of color factors for color-dressed generalized biadjoint scalar amplitudes, formulated in terms of certain tilings of the real moduli space $X(k,n)$ and collections of logarithmic differential forms, resolving an important open question from recent work by Cachazo, Early and Zhang. The main idea is to replace the realization space decomposition of $X(k,n)$ with a large class of overlapping tilings whose topologies are individually relatively simple. So we obtain a collection of color-dressed amplitudes, each of which satisfies $U(1)$ decoupling separately. The essential complexity appears when they are all superposed.

Moduli of hybrid curves I: Variations of canonical measures

Abstract:The present paper is the first in a series devoted to the study of asymptotic geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. We introduce the moduli space of hybrid curves as a new compactification of the moduli space of curves, refining the one obtained by Deligne and Mumford. This is the moduli space for multiscale geometric objects which mix complex and higher rank tropical and non-Archimedean geometries, reflecting both discrete and continuous features. We define canonical measures on hybrid curves which combine and generalize Arakelov-Bergman measures on Riemann surfaces and Zhang measures on metric graphs. We then show that the universal family of canonically measured hybrid curves over this moduli space varies continuously. This provides a precise link between the non-Archimedean Zhang measure and variations of Arakelov-Bergman measures in families of Riemann surfaces, answering a question which has been open since the pioneering work of Zhang on admissible pairing in the nineties.

Abstract:We determine the topology of the moduli space of periodic tilings of the plane by parallelograms. To each such tiling, we associate combinatorial data via the zone curves of the tiling. We show that all tilings with the same combinatorial data form an open subset in a suitable Euclidean space that is homotopy equivalent to a circle. Moreover, for any choice of combinatorial data, we construct a canonical tiling with these data.

On constant mean curvature 1-immersions of surfaces into hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:Motivated by the work of Bryant on constant mean curvature (CMC) $1$-immersions of surfaces into the hyperbolic space H^3 and after the results of Tarantello (2023), we pursue a possible parametrization for the moduli space of (CMC) 1-immersions of a surface S (closed, orientable and of genus >1) into hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Those immersions enter as "critical" object in our analysis. In fact, they can be attained only as limits of the (CMC) c-immersions (as c tends to 1), obtained in Huang-Lucia-Tarantello (2022), for |c|<1. However, such passage to the limit can be prevented by possible blow-up phenomena, so that the pullback metrics of the (CMC) c-immersions may yield (at the limit) to a singular metric with conical singularities at finitely many points (the blow-up points). In case of genus g=2, blow up can occur only at a single point, and in Tarantello (2023) it was shown how it could be prevented and the passage to the limit ensured in terms of the Kodaira map. In this note we sharpen this result and for genus g=2, we obtaina condition (we believe sharp) which involves only the Kodaira map on the six Weierstrass points. In addition we tackle the case of higher genus, where multiple blow-up points occur. In this case, we need to identify a suitable replacement of the Kodaira map, now defined on the space of non-zero effective divisors. More importantly, we need to improve in a substantial way the asymptotic analysis of Tarantello (2023) limited to the case of "blow-up" with minimal mass. In this direction we give a contribution which best applies to the case of genus g=3, but also provides a relevant step and a convincing indication on what should happen in the general case.

Abstract:Moduli of vector bundles on stacky curves behave similarly to moduli of vector bundles on curves, except there are additional numerical invariants giving many different notions of stability. We apply the existence criterion for good moduli spaces of stacks to show that the moduli stack of semistable vector bundles on a stacky curve has a proper good moduli space. We moduli-theoretically prove that a natural determinantal line bundle on this moduli space is ample, thus proving this moduli space is projective. Our methods give effective bounds for when a power of this line bundle is basepoint-free. As a special case, we obtain new and effective constructions of moduli spaces of parabolic bundles.
