Assuming $\mathsf{V=L}$, this is close to optimal; on the other hand, assuming large cardinals the same (and more) holds for every projective functional.

Abstract:Krueger showed that PFA implies that for all regular $\Theta \ge \aleph_2$, there are stationarily many $[H(\Theta)]^{\aleph_1}$ that are internally club but not internally approachable. From countably many Mahlo cardinals, we force a model in which, for all positive $n<\omega$ and $\Theta \ge \aleph_{n+1}$, there is a stationary subset of $[H(\Theta)]^{\aleph_n}$ consisting of sets that are internally club but not internally approachable. The theorem is obtained using a new variant of Mitchell forcing. This answers questions of Krueger.

Abstract:We prove the consistency, assuming an ineffable cardinal, of the statement that CH holds and any two normal countably closed ω 2 -Aronszajn trees are club isomorphic. This work generalizes to higher cardinals the property of Abraham–Shelah [1] that any two normal ω 1 -Aronszajn trees are club isomorphic, which follows from PFA. The statement that any two normal countably closed ω 2 -Aronszajn trees are club isomorphic implies that there are no ω 2 -Suslin trees, so our proof also expands on the method of Laver–Shelah [5] for obtaining the ω 2 -Suslin hypothesis.

Abstract:For a relational structure ${\mathbb X}$ we investigate the partial order $\langle {\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}) ,\subset \rangle$, where ${\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}):=\{ f[X]: f\in \mathop{\rm Emb}\nolimits ({\mathbb X})\}$. Here we consider uncountable ordinals. Since $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is isomorphic to the direct product $\prod _{i=1}^n (\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta _i}))^{s_i}$, where $\alpha = \omega ^{\delta _n}s_n+\dots +\omega ^{\delta _1}s_1+ m$ is the Cantor normal form for $\alpha $, the analysis is reduced to the investigation of the posets of the form ${\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta })$. It turns out that, in ZFC, either the poset $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is $\sigma$-closed and completely embeds $P(\omega )/\mathop{\rm Fin}$ and, hence, preserves $\omega _1$ and forces $|{\mathfrak c}|=|{\mathfrak h}|$, or, otherwise, completely embeds the algebra $P(\lambda )/[\lambda ]^{<\lambda }$, for some regular $\omega <\lambda \leq \mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta )$, and collapses $\omega _2$ to $\omega $. Abstract:We show that the Proper Forcing Axiom for forcing notions of size $\aleph_1$ is consistent with the continuum being arbitrarily large. In fact, assuming $GCH$ holds and $\kappa\geq\omega_2$ is a regular cardinal, we prove that there is a proper and $\aleph_2$-c.c.\ forcing $\mathbb{P}$ giving rise to a model of this forcing axiom together with $2^{\aleph_0}=\kappa$ and which, in addition, satisfies all statements of the form $\mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)\models \forall x\exists y\varphi(x, y)$, where $\varphi(x, y)$ is a restricted formula with the property that for every $a\in \mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)$ and every inner model $M$ of $CH$ with $a\in M$ there is, in $M$, a suitably nice proper poset adding some $b$ such that $\varphi(a, b)$. In particular, $\mathbb{P}$ forces Moore's Measuring principle, Baumgartner's Axiom for $\aleph_1$-dense sets of reals, Todorčević's Open Colouring Axiom for sets of size $\aleph_1$, and Todorěvić's P-ideal Dichotomy for $\aleph_1$-generated ideals on $\omega_1$, among other statements. In particular, all these statements are simultaneously compatible with a large continuum.

Abstract:Following \cite{bagaria2019large}, given cardinals $\kappa<\lambda$, we say $\kappa$ is a club $\lambda$-Berkeley cardinal if for every transitive set $N$ of size $<\lambda$ such that $\kappa\subseteq N$, there is a club $C\subseteq \kappa$ with the property that for every $\eta\in C$ there is an elementary embedding $j: N\rightarrow N$ with crit$(j)=\eta$. We say $\kappa$ is $\nu$-club $\lambda$-Berkeley if $C\subseteq \kappa$ as above is a $\nu$-club. We say $\kappa$ is $\lambda$-Berkeley if $C$ is unbounded in $\kappa$. We show that under AD$^+$, (1) every regular Suslin cardinal is $\omega$-club $\Theta$-Berkeley (see \rthm{main theorem}), (2) $\omega_1$ is club $\Theta$-Berkeley (see \rthm{main theorem lr} and \rthm{main theorem}), and (3) the ${\tilde\delta}^1_{2n}$'s are $\Theta$-Berkeley -- in particular, $\omega_2$ is $\Theta$-Berkeley (see \rrem{omega2}).

Abstract:Suppose that <math>T⁎</math> is an <math>ω1</math>-Aronszajn tree with no stationary antichain. We introduce a forcing axiom PFA(<math>T⁎</math>) for proper forcings which preserve these properties of <math>T⁎</math>. We prove that PFA(<math>T⁎</math>) implies many of the strong consequences of PFA, such as the failure of very weak club guessing, that all of the cardinal characteristics of the continuum are greater than <math>ω1</math>, and the P-ideal dichotomy. On the other hand, PFA(<math>T⁎</math>) implies some of the consequences of diamond principles, such as the existence of Knaster forcings which are not stationarily Knaster.

Abstract:We study Medvedev reducibility in the context of set theory — specifically, forcing and large cardinal hypotheses. Answering a question of Hamkins and Li [HL∞] , we show that the Medvedev degrees of countable ordinals are far from linearly ordered in multiple ways, our main result here being that there is a club of ordinals which is an antichain with respect to Medvedev reducibility. We then generalize these results to arbitrary "reasonably-definable" reducibilities, under appropriate set-theoretic hypotheses.We then turn from ordinals to general structures. We show that some of the results above yield characterizations of counterexamples to Vaught's conjecture; another applies to all situations, assigning an ordinal to any reasonable class of structures and "measure" on that class. We end by discussing some directions for future research.

Abstract:We develop a toolbox for forcing over arbitrary models of set theory without the axiom of choice. In particular, we introduce a variant of the countable chain condition and prove an iteration theorem that applies to many classical forcings such as Cohen forcing and random algebras. Our approach sidesteps the problem that forcing with the countable chain condition can collapse $\omega_1$ by a recent result of Karagila and Schweber. Using this, we show that adding many Cohen reals and random reals leads to different theories. This result is due to Woodin. Thus one can always change the theory of the universe by forcing, just like the continuum hypothesis and its negation can be obtained by forcing over arbitrary models with choice. We further study principles stipulating that the first-order theory of the universe remains the same in all generic extension by a fixed class of forcings. Extending a result of Woodin, we show that even for very restricted classes such as the class of all finite support products of Cohen forcing or the class of all random algebras, this principle implies that all infinite cardinals have countable cofinality.

Abstract:Club guessing principles were introduced by Shelah as a weakening of Jensen's diamond. Most spectacularly, they were used to prove Shelah's ZFC bound on the power of the first singular cardinal. These principles have found many other applications: in cardinal arithmetic and PCF theory; in the construction of combinatorial objects on uncountable cardinals such as Jonsson algebras, strong colourings, Souslin trees, and pathological graphs; to the non-existence of universals in model theory; to the non-existence of forcing axioms at higher uncountable cardinals; and many more. In this paper, the first part of a series, we survey various forms of club-guessing that have appeared in the literature, and then systematically study the various ways in which a club-guessing sequences can be improved, especially in the way the frequency of guessing is calibrated. We include an expository section intended for those unfamiliar with club-guessing and which can be read independently of the rest of the article.

Abstract:Continuing \cite{GitJir22}, we develop a version of Extender-based Magidor-Radin forcing where there are no extenders on the top ordinal. As an application, we provide another approach to obtain a failure of SCH on a club subset of an inaccessible cardinal, and a model where the cardinal arithmetic behaviors are different on stationary classes, whose union is the club, is provided. The cardinals and the cofinalities outside the clubs are not affected by the forcings.

Abstract:This is the first in a series of several articles. Our general purpose is to investigate Carlson's <_1-relation in the whole class of ordinals and later link it with ordinals of proof-theoretic interests. In this introductory article, after giving the basic definitions, we study the (canonical) isomorphisms {g(0,a,b)|a,b are additive principal numbers} and the <^0-relation and see how it is that <_1 induces, through all of these notions, thinner k-club classes of ordinals. In coming articles it will be shown the complete generalization of these ideas to the thinnest k-club classes induced by <_1.

On lax protomodularity of Ord-enriched categories

Abstract:Our main focus concerns a possible lax version of the algebraic property of protomodularity for Ord-enriched categories. Our motivating example is the category OrdAb of preordered abelian groups; indeed, while abelian groups form a protomodular category, OrdAb does not. Having in mind the role of comma objects in the enriched context, we consider some of the characteristic properties of protomodularity with respect to comma objects instead of pullbacks. We show that the equivalence between protomodularity and certain properties on pullbacks also holds when replacing conveniently pullbacks by comma objects in any finitely complete category enriched in Ord, and propose to call lax protomodular such Ord-enriched categories. We conclude by studying this sort of lax protomodularity for OrdAb, equipped with a suitable Ord-enrichment, and show that OrdAb fulfills the equivalent lax protomodular properties with respect to the weaker notion of precomma object; we call such categories lax preprotomodular.

Abstract:In this paper we give an ordinal analysis of the theory of second order arithmetic. We do this by working with proof trees -- that is, "deductions" which may not be well-founded. Working in a suitable theory, we are able to represent functions on proof trees as yet further proof trees satisfying a suitable analog of well-foundedness. Iterating this process allows us to represent higher order functions as well: since functions on proof trees are just proof trees themselves, these functions can easily be extended to act on proof trees which are themselves understood as functions. The corresponding system of ordinals parallels this, using higher order collapsing function.
