Abstract:Determining the structure of the Kauffman bracket skein module of all $3$-manifolds over the ring of Laurent polynomials $\mathbb Z[A^{\pm 1}]$ is a big open problem in skein theory. Very little is known about the skein module of non-prime manifolds over this ring. In this paper, we compute the Kauffman bracket skein module of the $3$-manifold $(S^1 \times S^2) \ \# \ (S^1 \times S^2)$ over the ring $\mathbb Z[A^{\pm 1}]$. We do this by analysing the submodule of handle sliding relations, for which we provide a suitable basis. Along the way we also compute the Kauffman bracket skein module of $(S^1 \times S^2) \ \# \ (S^1 \times D^2)$. Furthermore, we show that the skein module of $(S^1 \times S^2) \ \# \ (S^1 \times S^2)$ does not split into the sum of free and torsion submodules.

Skein modules and character varieties of Seifert manifolds

Abstract:We show that the Kauffman bracket skein module of a closed Seifert fibered 3-manifold $M$ is finitely generated over $\mathbb Z[A^{\pm 1}]$ if and only if $M$ is irreducible and non-Haken. We analyze in detail the character varieties $X(M)$ of such manifolds and show that under mild conditions they are reduced. We compute the Kauffman bracket skein modules for these $3$-manifolds (over $\mathbb Q(A)$) and show that their dimensions coincide with $|X(M)|.$

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Kauffman bracket skein module of closed oriented three-manifolds at a non-multiple-of-four roots of unity. Our main result establishes that the localization of this module at a maximal ideal, which corresponds to an irreducible representation of the fundamental group of the manifold, forms a one-dimensional free module over the localized unreduced coordinate ring of the character variety. We apply this by proving that the dimension of the skein module of a homology sphere with finite character variety, when the order of the root of unity is not divisible by $4$, is greater than or equal to the dimension of the unreduced coordinate ring of the character variety. This leads to a computation of the dimension of the skein module with coefficients in rational functions for homology spheres with tame universal skein module.

On torsion in the Kauffman bracket skein module of $3$-manifolds

Abstract:We study Kirby problems 1.92(E)-(G), which, roughly speaking, ask for which compact oriented $3$-manifold $M$ the Kauffman bracket skein module $\mathcal{S}(M)$ has torsion as a $\mathbb{Z}[A^{\pm 1}]$-module. We give new criteria for the presence of torsion in terms of how large the $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-character variety of $M$ is. This gives many counterexamples to question 1.92(G)-(i) in Kirby's list. For manifolds with incompressible tori, we give new effective criteria for the presence of torsion, revisiting the work of Przytycki and Veve. We also show that $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R P}^3# L(p,1))$ has torsion when $p$ is even. Finally, we show that for $M$ an oriented Seifert manifold, closed or with boundary, $\mathcal{S}(M)$ has torsion if and only if $M$ admits a $2$-sided non-boundary parallel essential surface.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and a fixed invertible element $q^{\frac{1}{2}}$, and suppose $q+q^{-1}$ is invertible in $R$. For each planar surface $\Sigma_{0,n+1}$, we present its Kauffman bracket skein algebra over $R$ by explicit generators and relations. The presentation is independent of $R$, and can be considered as a quantization of the trace algebra of $n$ generic $2\times 2$ unimodular matrices.

A survey on skein modules via braids

Abstract:In this paper we present recent results on the computation of skein modules of 3-manifolds using braids and appropriate knot algebras. Skein modules generalize knot polynomials in $S^3$ to knot polynomials in arbitrary 3-manifolds and they have become extremely essential algebraic tools in the study of 3-manifolds. In this paper we present the braid approach to the HOMFLYPT and the Kauffman bracket skein modules of the Solid Torus ST and the lens spaces $L(p,1)$ and $S^1\times S^2$.

Abstract:We develop a theory of stated SL(n)-skein modules, $S_n(M,N),$ of 3-manifolds $M$ marked with intervals $N$ in their boundaries. They consist of linear combinations of $n$-webs with ends in $N$, considered up to skein relations inspired by the relations of the Reshetikhin-Turaev theory. We prove that cutting $M$ along a disk resulting in a $3$-manifold $M'$ yields a homomorphism $S_n(M)\to S_n(M')$. That result allows to analyze the skein modules of $3$-manifolds through the skein modules of their pieces. The theory of stated skein modules is particularly rich for thickened surfaces $M=\Sigma \times (-1,1),$ in whose case, $S_n(M)$ is an algebra, denoted by $S_n(\Sigma).$ We prove that the skein algebra of the ideal bigon is $O_q(SL(n))$ and that it provides simple geometric interpretations of the product, coproduct, counit, the antipode, and the cobraided structure on $O_q(SL(n)).$ Additionally, we show that a splitting of a thickened bigon near a marking defines a $O_q(SL(n))$-comodule structure on $S_n(M),$ or dually, an $U_q(sl_n)$-module structure. Furthermore, we show that the skein algebra of surfaces $\Sigma_1, \Sigma_2$ glued along two sides of a triangle is isomorphic with the braided tensor product $S_n(\Sigma_1)\underline{\otimes} S_n(\Sigma_2)$ of Majid. These results allow for a geometric interpretation of further concepts in the theory of quantum groups, for example, of the braided products and of Majid's transmutation operation. We prove that the factorization homology of surfaces with coefficients in $Rep\, U_q(sl_n)$ is equivalent to the category of left modules over $S_n(\Sigma)$. We also discuss the relation with the quantum moduli spaces of Alekseev-Schomerus. Finally, we show that for surfaces $\Sigma$ with boundary, $S_n(\Sigma)$ is a free module with a basis induced from the Kashiwara-Lusztig canonical bases.

Torsion in Kauffman bracket skein module of a $4$-strand Montesinos knot exterior

Abstract:For an oriented $3$-manifold $M$, let $\mathcal{S}(M)$ denote its Kauffman bracket skein module over $\mathbb{Z}[q^{\pm\frac{1}{2}}]$. It is shown that $\mathcal{S}(M)$ admits infinitely many torsion elements when $M$ is the exterior of the Montesinos knot $K(a_1/b_1,a_2/b_2,a_3/b_4,a_4/b_4)\subset S^3$ with each $b_i\ge 3$. This provides a negative answer to Problem 1.92 (G)-(i) in the Kirby's list, which asks whether $\mathcal{S}(M)$ is free when $M$ is irreducible and has no incompressible non-boundary parallel torus.

Abstract:We develop a theory of stated SL(n )‐skein modules, Sn(M,N) , of 3‐manifolds M marked with intervals N in their boundaries. These skein modules, generalizing stated SL(2)‐modules of the first author, stated SL(3)‐modules of Higgins', and SU(n)‐skein modules of the second author, consist of linear combinations of framed, oriented graphs, called n ‐webs, with ends in N , considered up to skein relations of the Uq(sln) ‐Reshetikhin–Turaev functor on tangles, involving coupons representing the anti‐symmetrizer and its dual. We prove the Splitting Theorem asserting that cutting of a marked 3‐manifold M along a disk resulting in a 3‐manifold M′ yields a homomorphism Sn(M)→Sn(M′) for all n . That result allows to analyze the skein modules of 3‐manifolds through the skein modules of their pieces. The theory of stated skein modules is particularly rich for thickened surfaces M=Σ×(−1,1) , in whose case, Sn(M) is an algebra, denoted by Sn(Σ) . One of the main results of this paper asserts that the skein algebra of the ideal bigon is isomorphic with Oq(SL(n)) and it provides simple geometric interpretations of the product, coproduct, counit, the antipode, and the cobraided structure on Oq(SL(n)) . Abstract:The sliced skein algebra of a closed surface of genus $g$ with $m$ punctures, $\mathfrak{S}=\Sigma_{g,m}$, is the quotient of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra $\mathcal{S}_\xi(\mathfrak{S})$ corresponding to fixing the scalar values of its peripheral curves. We show that the sliced skein algebra of a finite type surface is a domain if the ground ring is a domain. When the quantum parameter $\xi$ is a root of unity we calculate the center of the sliced skein algebra and its PI-degree. Among applications we show that any smooth point of a sliced character variety is a fully Azumaya point of the skein algebra $\mathcal{S}_\xi(\mathfrak{S})$. For any $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$--representation $\rho$ of the fundamental group of an oriented connected 3-manifold $M$ and a root of unity $\xi$ with odd $ord(\xi^2)$, we introduce the $\rho$-reduced skein module $\mathcal{S}_{\xi,\rho}(M)$. We show that $\mathcal{S}_{\xi,\rho}(M)$ has dimension 1 when $M$ is closed and $\rho$ is irreducible. We also show that if $\rho$ is irreducible the $\rho$-reduced skein module of a handlebody, as a module over the skein algebra of its boundary, is simple and has the dimension equal to the PI-degree of the skein algebra of its boundary.

Abstract:Suppose $R$ is a commutative ring with identity and a fixed invertible element $q^{\frac{1}{2}}$ such that $q+q^{-1}$ is invertible. For an oriented surface $\Sigma$, let $\mathcal{S}(\Sigma;R)$ denote the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of $\Sigma$ over $R$. It is shown that to each embedded graph $G\subset\Sigma$ satisfying that $\Sigma\setminus G$ is homeomorphic to a disk and some other mild conditions, one can associate a generating set for $\mathcal{S}(\Sigma;R)$, and the ideal of defining relations is generated by relations of degree at most $6$ supported by certain small subsurfaces.

Abstract:We determine the dimension of the Kauffman bracket skein module at generic $q$ for mapping tori of the 2-torus, generalising the well-known computation of Carrega and Gilmer. In the process, we give a decomposition of the twisted Hochschild homology of the $G$-skein algebra for $G = \mathrm{SL}_N$ or $\mathrm{GL}_N$, which is a direct summand of the whole skein module, and from which the dimensions follow easily in the cases $G = \mathrm{SL}_2$ and $G = \mathrm{GL}_1$.

Abstract:We classify simply connected compact Sasaki manifolds of dimension 2n+1 with positive transverse bisectional curvature. In particular, the Kähler cone corresponding to such manifolds must be bi-holomorphic to Cn+1\{0}. As an application we recover the theorem of Mori and Siu–Yau on the Frankel conjecture and extend it to certain orbifold version. The main idea is to deform such Sasaki manifolds to the standard round sphere in two steps, both fixing the complex structure on the Kähler cone. First, we deform the metric along the Sasaki–Ricci flow and obtain a limit Sasaki–Ricci soliton with positive transverse bisectional curvature. Then by varying the Reeb vector field which essentially decreases the volume functional, we deform the Sasaki–Ricci soliton to a Sasaki–Einstein metric with positive transverse bisectional curvature, i.e. a round sphere. The second deformation is only possible when one treats simultaneously regular and irregular Sasaki manifolds, even if the manifold one starts with is regular (quasi-regular), i.e. Kähler manifolds (orbifolds).

Abstract:In previous work of the second- and third-named authors with Linhui Shen, cluster theory was used to construct wavefunctions for branes in threespace and conjecturally relate them to open Gromov-Witten invariants. This was done by defining a quantum Lagrangian subvariety of a quantum cluster variety, and mutating a simple solution to the defining equations in a distinguished seed. In this paper, we extend the construction to incorporate the skein-theoretic approach to open Gromov-Witten theory of Ekholm-Shende. In particular, we define a skein-theoretic version of cluster theory, including the groupoid of seeds and mutations and a skein-theoretic version of the quantum dilogarithm. We prove a pentagon relation in the skein of the closed torus in this context, and give strong evidence that its analogue holds for arbitrary surfaces. We propose face relations satisfied by the skein-theoretic wavefunction, prove their invariance under mutations, and show their solution is unique. We define a skein version of framings in the story, and use the novel cluster structure to compute wavefunctions in several examples. The skein approach incorporates moduli spaces of sheaves of higher microlocal rank and their quantizations.

Abstract:We interpret Manolescu-Neithalath's cabled Khovanov homology formula for computing Morrison-Walker-Wedrich's $\mathrm{KhR}_2$ skein lasagna module as a homotopy colimit (mapping telescope) in a completion of the category of complexes over Bar-Natan's cobordism category. Using categorified projectors, we compute the $\mathrm{KhR}_2$ skein lasagna modules of (manifold, boundary link) pairs $(S^2 \times B^2, \tilde \beta)$, where $\tilde \beta$ is a geometrically essential boundary link, identifying a relationship between the lasagna module and the Rozansky projector appearing in the Rozansky-Willis invariant for nullhomologous links in $S^2 \times S^1$. As an application, we show that the $\mathrm{KhR}_2$ skein lasagna module of $S^2 \times S^2$ is trivial, confirming a conjecture of Manolescu.

Abstract:Motivated by the Quantum Modularity Conjecture and its arithmetic aspects related to the Habiro ring of a number field, we define a map from the Kauffman bracket skein module of an integer homology 3-sphere to the Habiro ring, and use Witten's conjecture (now a theorem) to show that the image is an effectively computable module of finite rank that can be used to phrase the quantum modularity conjecture.

Abstract:Using skein theory very much in the spirit of the Reshetikhin--Turaev constructions, we define a $(3+1)$-TQFT associated with possibly non-semisimple finite unimodular ribbon tensor categories. State spaces are given by admissible skein modules, and we prescribe the TQFT on handle attachments. We give some explicit algebraic conditions on the category to define this TQFT, namely to be "chromatic non-degenerate". As a by-product, we obtain an invariant of 4-manifolds equipped with a ribbon graph in their boundary, and in the "twist non-degenerate" case, an invariant of 3-manifolds. Our construction generalizes the Crane--Yetter--Kauffman TQFTs in the semi-simple case, and the Lyubashenko (hence also Hennings and WRT) invariants of 3-manifolds. The whole construction is very elementary, and we can easily characterize invertibility of the TQFTs, study their behavior under connected sum and provide some examples.
