Abstract:On September 14,2015,the first detection of gravitational Waves at the advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors,in the United States,marked the beginning of "gravitational-wave astronomy",that opens a new window looking into the violent sides of our Universe.It is very promising that at other wavelengths detections of gravitational waves with various space-based and ground-based observatories will show up in the near future of this century.These observatories include space-based laser interferometer antennas,pulsar timing arrays,cosmic microwave background satellites,etc.The field of gravitational waves will reveal a lot of new information on the unknown aspects of our Universe,including,(i) the cosmic inflation in the early Universe,(ii) the formation and evolution of supermassive black holes,and supermassive black hole binaries that are related to the history of galaxy mergers,(iii) the stellar evolution of binary systems,especially the stellar mass black hole binaries,(iv) the inspiral and subsequent merger of binary neutron stars,and the equation of state of superdense nuclear matters,(v) various fundamental aspects of gravitational theories,and so on.To guarantee the success of gravitational-wave observations,many aspects of gravitational-wave detectors have to be addressed,especially the principles of design,the understanding of various noises and possible ways to eliminate and/or suppress these noises.In the paper,we briefly review the physics of the general relativity and gravitational waves.Different classes of gravitational-wave detectors operating or to be operated at complementary wavelength bands from nano-Hz to kilo-Hz are presented,while their various noises and practical methods to overcome them are also discussed.The two Chinese projects,Taiji and TianQin,which are both proposed as space-based laser interferometer antennas,are reviewed.Their brief histories,project rationales,scientific aims,pros and cons in the upcoming gravitational-wave era,are discussed.We also review the expected fruitful science to our understandings of astrophysics and cosmology with the gravitational-wave astronomy,with more gravitational-wave detections.Gravitational waves bring in information that is complementary to what can be obtained with electromagnetic observations.For example,gravitational-wave observations of binary neutron stars are supposed to reveal the mechanism of the progenitor of short gamma-ray burst.The possible joint observations of gravitational waves and electromagnetic counterparts will lead to a new era of multi-messenger astronomy.Finally,the first direct detection event,GW150914,and the merger of binary black holes behind the scene,are discussed in context.The event's implications for astrophysics,black hole physics,alternative gravity theories are briefly presented.
