Abstract:This paper considers two-dimensional steady solitary waves with constant vorticity propagating under the influence of gravity over an impermeable flat bed. Unlike in previous works on solitary waves, we allow for both internal stagnation points and overhanging wave profiles. Using analytic global bifurcation theory, we construct continuous curves of large-amplitude solutions. Along these curves, either the wave amplitude approaches the maximum possible value, the dimensionless wave speed becomes unbounded, or a singularity develops in a conformal map describing the fluid domain. This is stronger than what one would expect from a straightforward generalization of existing results for periodic waves. We also show that an arbitrary solitary wave of elevation with constant vorticity must be supercritical. The existence proof relies on a novel reformulation of the problem as an elliptic system for two scalar functions in a fixed domain, one describing the conformal map of the fluid region and the other the flow beneath the wave.

Abstract:We consider two-dimensional steady periodic gravity waves on water of finite depth with a prescribed but arbitrary vorticity distribution. The water surface is allowed to be overhanging and no assumptions regarding the absence of stagnation points and critical layers are made. Using conformal mappings and a new reformulation of Bernoulli's equation, we uncover an equivalent formulation as "identity plus compact," which is amenable to Rabinowitz's global bifurcation theorem. This allows us to construct a global connected set of solutions, bifurcating from laminar flows with a flat surface. Moreover, a nodal analysis is carried out for these solutions under a certain spectral assumption involving the vorticity function. Lastly, downstream waves are investigated in more detail.

Abstract:We construct small amplitude gravity-capillary water waves with small nonzero vorticity, in three spatial dimensions, bifurcating from uniform flows. The waves are symmetric, and periodic in both horizontal coordinates. The proof is inspired by Lortz' construction of magnetohydrostatic equilibria in reflection-symmetric toroidal domains. It relies on a global representation of the vorticity as the cross product of two gradients, and on prescribing a functional relationship between the Bernoulli function and the orbital period of the water particles. The presence of the free surface introduces significant new challenges. In particular, the resulting free boundary problem is not elliptic, and the involved maps incur a loss of regularity under Fréchet differentiation. Nevertheless, we show that a version of the Crandall-Rabinowitz local bifurcation method applies, by carefully tracking the loss of regularity.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the steady water wave problem for waves that possess a merely $L_r-$integrable vorticity, with $r\in(1,\infty)$ being arbitrary. We first establish the equivalence of the three formulations--the velocity formulation, the stream function formulation, and the height function formulation-- in the setting of strong solutions, regardless of the value of $r$. Based upon this result and using a suitable notion of weak solution for the height function formulation, we then establish, by means of local bifurcation theory, the existence of small amplitude capillary and capillary-gravity water waves with a $L_r-$integrable vorticity.

Abstract:We consider the two-dimensional problem for steady water waves with vorticity on water of finite depth. While neglecting the effects of surface tension we construct connected families of large amplitude periodic waves approaching a limiting wave, which is either a solitary wave, the highest solitary wave, the highest Stokes wave or a Stokes wave with a breaking profile. In particular, when the vorticity is nonnegative we prove the existence of highest Stokes waves with an included angle of 120 . In contrast to previous studies, we fix the Bernoulli constant and consider the wavelength as a bifurcation parameter, which guarantees that the limiting wave has a finite depth. In fact, this is the first rigorous proof of the existence of extreme Stokes waves with vorticity on water of finite depth. Aside from the existence of highest waves, we provide a new result about the regularity of Stokes waves of arbitrary amplitude (including extreme waves). Furthermore, we prove several new facts about steady waves, such as a lower bound for the wavelength of Stokes waves, while also eliminating a possibility of the wave breaking for waves with non-negative vorticity.

Abstract:We consider the global bifurcation problem for spatially periodic traveling waves for two-dimensional gravity-capillary vortex sheets. The two fluids have arbitrary constant, non-negative densities (not both zero), the gravity parameter can be positive, negative, or zero, and the surface tension parameter is positive. Thus, included in the parameter set are the cases of pure capillary water waves and gravity-capillary water waves. Our choice of coordinates allows for the possibility that the fluid interface is not a graph over the horizontal. We use a technical reformulation which converts the traveling wave equations into a system of the form "identity plus compact." Rabinowitz' global bifurcation theorem is applied and the final conclusion is the existence of either a closed loop of solutions, or an unbounded set of nontrivial traveling wave solutions which contains waves which may move arbitrarily fast, become arbitrarily long, form singularities in the vorticity or curvature, or whose interfaces self-intersect.

On the vorticity threshold for steady water waves

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of two-dimensional water waves characterized by a significant adverse constant vorticity over flows without stagnation points. Surprisingly, we discover qualitative distinctions between this scenario and those featuring favorable vorticity. Our findings reveal that in the presence of large adverse vorticity, neither Stokes waves nor solitary waves can approach extreme waves exhibiting surface stagnation points. Conversely, we demonstrate that global bifurcation curves always lead to unidirectional Stokes and solitary waves with precisely one stagnation point located at the bottom right beneath the crest. In contrast, it is known that any favorable or even small adverse vorticity eliminates the possibility of bottom stagnation, leading to extreme waves exhibiting surface singularities. Additionally, we establish several novel facts, including new bounds for both amplitude and the Froude number.

Abstract:We consider the stability of periodic gravity free-surface water waves traveling downstream at a constant speed over a shear flow of finite depth. In case the free surface is flat, a sharp criterion of linear instability is established for a general class of shear flows with inflection points and the maximal unstable wave number is found. Comparison to the rigid-wall setting testifies that free surface has a destabilizing effect. For a class of unstable shear flows, the bifurcation of nontrivial periodic traveling waves of small-amplitude is demonstrated at any wave number. We show the linear instability of small nontrivial waves bifurcated at an unstable wave number of the background shear flow. The proof uses a new formulation of the linearized water-wave problem and a perturbation argument. An example of the background shear flow of unstable small-amplitude periodic traveling waves is constructed for an arbitrary vorticity strength and for an arbitrary depth, illustrating that vorticity has a subtle influence on the stability of water waves.

Abstract:We establish the existence of small-amplitude uni- and bimodal steady periodic gravity waves with an affine vorticity distribution, using a bifurcation argument that differs slightly from earlier theory. The solutions describe waves with critical layers and an arbitrary number of crests and troughs in each minimal period. An important part of the analysis is a fairly complete description of the local geometry of the so-called kernel equation, and of the small-amplitude solutions. Finally, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the bifurcating solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we first construct two-dimensional periodic interface waves with point vortex and capillary effect and then obtain the global structure of the set of solutions. This is done using the local and global bifurcation argument. Especially, we establish a global continuation theorem by using the degree for $C^1$ Fredholm mappings. As far as we know, the global result is new and general, which is promising to deal with other new phenomena in water waves.

Abstract:In this work we prove the equivalence between three different weak formulations of the steady periodic water wave problem where the vorticity is discontinuous. In particular, we prove that generalised versions of the standard Euler and stream function formulation of the governing equations are equivalent to a weak version of the recently introduced modified-height formulation. The weak solutions of these formulations are considered in Hölder spaces.

Abstract:We construct global curves of rotational traveling wave solutions to the $2D$ water wave equations on a compact domain. The real analytic interface is subject to surface tension, while gravitational effects are ignored. In contrast to the rotational surface waves, the fluid flow follows the incompressible, irrotational Euler equations. This model can provide a description for tiny water droplets in breaking waves and white caps. The primary tool we use is global bifurcation theory, via a conformal formulation of the problem. The obtained fluid domains have $m$-fold discrete rotational symmetry, as well as a reflection symmetry.

Abstract:We consider solitary water waves on the vorticity flow in a two-dimensional channel of finite depth. The main object of study is a branch of solitary waves starting from a laminar flow and then approaching an extreme wave. In \cite{Koz1b} it was proved that there always exists a bifurcation point on such branches and the first bifurcation occurs at a simple eigenvalue. Here we describe the structure of global bifurcating branches starting from this bifurcation point.

Abstract:We give a quite simple approach how to prove the absence of loops in bifurcation branches of water waves in rotational case with arbitrary vorticity distribution. The supporting flow may contain stagnation points and critical layers and water surface is allowed to be overhanging. Monotonicity properties of the free surface are presented. Especially simple criterium of absence of loops is given for bifurcation branches when the bifurcation parameter is the water wave period. We show that there are no loops if you start from a water wave with a positive/negative vertical component of velocity on the positive half period.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider two-dimensional periodic capillary-gravity waves traveling under the influence of a vertical electric field. The full system is a nonlinear, two-layered, free boundary problem. The interface dynamics are derived by coupling Euler equations for the velocity field of the fluid with voltage potential equations governing the electric field. We first introduce the naive flattening technique to transform the free boundary problem into a fixed boundary problem. We then prove the existence of small-amplitude electrohydrodynamic waves with constant vorticity using local bifurcation theory. Moreover, we show that these electrohydrodynamic waves are formally stable in the linearized sense. Furthermore, we obtain a secondary bifurcation curve that emerges from the primary branch, consisting of ripple solutions on the interface. As far as we know, such solutions in electrohydrodynamics are established for the first time. It is worth noting that the electric field plays a key role in controlling the shapes and types of waves on the interface.

Abstract:We consider Stokes water waves on the vorticity flow in a two-dimensional channel of finite depth. In the paper "V.Kozlov, On first subharmonic bifurcations in a branch of Stokes waves, JDE, 2024," it was proved existence of subharmonic bifurcations on a branch of Stokes waves. Such bifurcations occur near the first bifurcation in the set of Stokes waves. Moreover it is shown in that paper that the bifurcating solutions build a connected continuum containing large amplitude waves. This fact was proved under a certain assumption concerning the second eigenvalue of the Frechet derivative. In this paper we investigate this assumption and present explicit conditions when it is satisfied.

For this system we prove existence of three-dimensional steady gravity-capillary waves with nonzero vorticity. We obtain nonzero vorticity by prescribing the relative velocity fields to be Beltrami fields, for which the vorticity and velocity are parallel. The main result is a multiparameter bifurcation result for small amplitude waves given in two variants: a first theorem guaranteeing existence under some general parameter assumptions, and a second specific but less exhaustive theorem, for which the assumptions may be explicitly verified, yielding the existence of both in-phase and off-phase motions in the different layers. The proof relies on an implicit function theorem corresponding to multiparameter bifurcation. This theorem is presented in an appendix as an abstract result that can be applied directly to other problems.

Steady gravity-capillary periodic waves on the surface of a thin viscous liquid film supported by an air stream on an inclined wall are investigated. Based on lubrication approximation and thin air-foil theory, this problem is reduced to an integro-differential equation. The small-amplitude analysis is carried out to obtain two analytical solutions up to the second order. Numerical computation shows there exist two distinct primary bifurcation branches starting from infinitesimal waves, which approach solitary wave configuration in the long-wave limit when the values of physical parameters are above certain thresholds. New families of solutions manifest themselves either as secondary bifurcation occurring on primary branches or as isolated solution branches. The limiting configurations of the primary solution branches with the increase of two parameters are studied in two different cases, where one and two limiting configurations are obtained, respectively. For the latter case, the approximation of the configurations is given.

Abstract:In this paper, we study two-dimensional traveling waves in finite-depth water that are acted upon solely by gravity. We prove that, for any supercritical Froude number (non-dimensionalized wave speed), there exists a continuous one-parameter family $\mathcal{C}$ of solitary waves in equilibrium with a submerged point vortex. This family bifurcates from an irrotational uniform flow, and, at least for large Froude numbers, extends up to the development of a surface singularity. These are the first rigorously constructed gravity wave-borne point vortices without surface tension, and notably our formulation allows the free surface to be overhanging. We also provide a numerical bifurcation study of traveling periodic gravity waves with submerged point vortices, which strongly suggests that some of these waves indeed overturn. Finally, we prove that at generic solutions on $\mathcal{C}$ $\unicode{x2013}$ including those that are large amplitude or even overhanging $\unicode{x2013}$ the point vortex can be desingularized to obtain solitary waves with a submerged hollow vortex. Physically, these can be thought of as traveling waves carrying spinning bubbles of air.
