Abstract:We present an $L$-like construction that produces the minimal model of $\mathsf{AD}_\mathbb{R}+$"$\Theta$ is regular". In fact, our construction can produce any model of $\mathsf{AD}^++\mathsf{AD}_\mathbb{R}+V=L(\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}))$ in which there is no hod mouse with a measurable limit of Woodins.

Chang models over derived models with supercompact measures

Abstract:Based on earlier work of the third author, we construct a Chang-type model with supercompact measures extending a derived model of a given hod mouse with a regular cardinal $\delta$ that is both a limit of Woodin cardinals and a limit of ${<}\delta$-strong cardinals. The existence of such a hod mouse is consistent relative to a Woodin cardinal that is a limit of Woodin cardinals. We argue that our Chang-type model satisfies $\mathsf{AD}^+ + \mathsf{AD}_{\mathbb{R}} + \Theta$ is regular + $\omega_1$ is ${<}\delta_{\infty}$-supercompact for some regular cardinal $\delta_{\infty}>\Theta$. This complements Woodin's generalized Chang model, which satisfies $\mathsf{AD}^+ + \mathsf{AD}_{\mathbb{R}}+\omega_1$ is supercompact, assuming a proper class of Woodin cardinals that are limits of Woodin cardinals.

Abstract:We introduce a new inner model $C(aa)$ arising from stationary logic. We show that assuming a proper class of Woodin cardinals, or alternatively $MM^{++}$, the regular uncountable cardinals of $V$ are measurable in the inner model $C(aa)$, the theory of $C(aa)$ is (set) forcing absolute, and $C(aa)$ satisfies CH. We introduce an auxiliary concept that we call club determinacy, which simplifies the construction of $C(aa)$ greatly but may have also independent interest. Based on club determinacy, we introduce the concept of aa-mouse which we use to prove CH and other properties of the inner model $C(aa)$.

Abstract:Assume ZF + AD + V=L(R). Let $[\alpha,\beta]$ be a $\Sigma_1$ gap with $J_\alpha(R)$ admissible. We analyze $J_\beta(R)$ as a natural form of ``derived model'' of a premouse $P$, where $P$ is found in a generic extension of $V$. In particular, we will have $\mathcal{P}(R)\cap J_\beta(R)=\mathcal{P}(R)\cap D$, and if $J_\beta(R)\models$``$\Theta$ exists'', then $J_\beta(R)$ and $D$ in fact have the same universe. This analysis will be employed in further work, yet to appear, toward a resolution of a conjecture of Rudominer and Steel on the nature of $(L(R))^M$, for $\omega$-small mice $M$. We also establish some preliminary work toward this conjecture in the present paper.

Abstract:Assume ZF + AD + $V=L(\mathbb{R})$. We prove some "mouse set" theorems, for definability over $J_\alpha(\mathbb{R})$ where $[\alpha,\alpha]$ is a projective-like gap (of $L(\mathbb{R})$) and $\alpha$ is either a successor ordinal or has countable cofinality, but $\alpha\neq\beta+1$ where $\beta$ ends a strong gap. For such ordinals $\alpha$ and integers $n\geq 1$, we show that there is a mouse $M$ with $\mathbb{R}\cap M=\mathrm{OD}_{\alpha n}$. The proof involves an analysis of ladder mice and their generalizations to $J_\alpha(\mathbb{R})$. This analysis is related to earlier work of Rudominer, Woodin and Steel on ladder mice. However, it also yields a new proof of the mouse set theorem even at the least point where ladder mice arise -- one which avoids the stationary tower. The analysis also yields a corresponding "anti-correctness" result on a cone, generalizing facts familiar in the projective hierarchy; for example, that $(\Pi^1_3)^V\upharpoonright M_1$ truth is $(\Sigma^1_3)^{M_1}$-definable and $(\Sigma^1_3)^{M_1}$ truth is $(\Pi^1_3)^V\upharpoonright M_1$-definable. We also define and study versions of ladder mice on a cone at the end of weak gap, and at the successor of the end of a strong gap, and an anti-correctness result on a cone there.

Abstract:Let $R$ be the class of regular cardinals which are not hyperinaccessible. We show that $L[R]$, and similar inner models in the $\alpha$-inaccessible hierarchy, can be generated by iterating a small "machete" mouse up through all the ordinals, and then taking a generic extension by a hyperclass Magidor iteration of Prikry forcings. We then show that such simple mice are themselves elements of $L[\mathsf{Reg}]$.

Abstract:We study the complexity of automatic structures via well-established concepts from both logic and model theory, including ordinal heights (of well-founded relations), Scott ranks of structures, and Cantor-Bendixson ranks (of trees). We prove the following results: 1) The ordinal height of any automatic well- founded partial order is bounded by \omega^\omega ; 2) The ordinal heights of automatic well-founded relations are unbounded below the first non-computable ordinal; 3) For any computable ordinal there is an automatic structure of Scott rank at least that ordinal. Moreover, there are automatic structures of Scott rank the first non-computable ordinal and its successor; 4) For any computable ordinal, there is an automatic successor tree of Cantor-Bendixson rank that ordinal.

Abstract:We study some connections between definability in generalized descriptive set theory and large cardinals, particularly measurable cardinals and limits thereof, working in ZFC. We show that if $\kappa$ is a limit of measurable cardinals then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ wellorder of a subset of $P(\kappa)$ of length $\geq\kappa^+$; this answers a question of Lücke and Müller. However, in $M_1$, the minimal proper class mouse with a Woodin cardinal, for every uncountable cardinal $\kappa$ which is not a limit of measurables, there is a $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\{\kappa\})$ good wellorder of $H_{\kappa^+}$. If $\kappa$ is a limit of measurables then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ mad family $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$, and if also $\mathrm{cof}(\kappa)>\omega$ then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ almost disjoint family $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$. However, relative to the consistency of large cardinals, $\Pi_1(\{\kappa\})$ mad families and maximal independent families $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ can exist, when $\kappa$ is a limit of measurables, and even more. We also examine some of the features of $L[U]$, and answer another question of Lücke and Müller, showing that if $\kappa$ is a weakly compact cardinal such that every $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\{\kappa\})$ subset of $P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$ has a subset which is the range of a perfect function, then there is an inner model satisfying "there is a weakly compact limit of measurable cardinals".

Abstract:Assume the existence of sufficent large cardinals. Let $M_{\mathrm{sw}n}$ be the minimal iterable proper class $L[E]$ model satisfying "there are $\delta_0<\kappa_0<\ldots<\delta_{n-1}<\kappa_{n-1}$ such that the $\delta_i$ are Woodin cardinals and the $\kappa_i$ are strong cardinals". Let $M=M_{\mathrm{sw}2}$. We identify an inner model $\mathscr{V}_2^M$ of $M$, which is a proper class model satisfying "there are 2 Woodin cardinals", and is iterable both in $V$ and in $M$, and closed under its own iteration strategy. The construction also yields significant information about the extent to which $M$ knows its own iteration strategy. We characterize the universe of $\mathscr{V}_2^M$ as the mantle and the least ground of $M$, and as $\mathrm{HOD}^{M[G]}$ for $G\subseteq\mathrm{Coll}(\omega,\lambda)$ being $M$-generic with $\lambda$ sufficiently large. These results correspond to facts already known for $M_{\mathrm{sw}1}$, and the proofs are an elaboration of those, but there are substantial new issues and new methods used to handle them.

Abstract:Quasiminimal structures play an important role in non-elementary categoricity. In this paper we explore possibilities of constructing quasiminimal models of a given first-order theory. We present several constructions with increasing control of the properties of the outcome using increasingly stronger assumptions on the theory. We also establish an upper bound on the Hanf number of the existence of arbitrarily large quasiminimal models.

Abstract:Kadeishvili's minimal model theorem establishes the existence of an $A_\infty$-structure, unique up to isomorphism, on the cohomology of a dg associative algebra, which captures its homotopy type. In this note we prove the existence of minimal models that are unique up to isotopy, a stronger result obviously known to T. Kadeishvili and certainly to others, yet seemingly overlooked by mankind. We will explore how this stronger result can help in the study of Massey products. First, we show that the attempts to extract a local information from the ternary operation $\mu_3$ of our minimal model leads directly to the rediscovery of the triple Massey product. The motto is: "The triple Massey product is an invariant manifestation of $\mu_3$." We then prove that, under reasonable assumptions, the higher Massey product $\langle x_1,\ldots,x_n\rangle$ equals the set of all values $\mu_n(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$, where $\mu_n$ runs over the $n$-ary products of our minimal models. We believe that this note will help to elucidate the still somewhat enigmatic relationship between minimal models and Massey products.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the log minimal model program in dimension $d-1$ implies the existence of log minimal models for effective lc pairs (eg of nonnegative Kodaira dimension) in dimension $d$. In fact, we prove that the same conclusion follows from a weaker assumption, namely, the log minimal model program with scaling in dimension $d-1$. This enables us to prove that effective lc pairs in dimension five have log minimal models. We also give new proofs of the existence of log minimal models for effective lc pairs in dimension four and the Shokurov reduction theorem. Other applications appear in a paper of Birkar-Paun.

Abstract:I develop in depth the machinery of $(\mathcal L, n)$-models originally introduced by Shelah and, independently in a slightly different form by Kripke. This machinery allows fairly routine constructions of true but unprovable sentences in $\mathsf{PA}$. I give two applications: 1. Shelah's alternative proof of the Paris-Harrington theorem, and 2. The independence over $\mathsf{PA}$ of a new $\Pi^0_1$ Ramsey theoretic statement about colorings of finite sequences of structures.

Models for short sequences of measures in the cofinality-$ω$ constructible model

Abstract:We investigate the relation between $C^{*}$, the model of sets constructible using first order logic augmented with the "cofinality-$\omega$" quantifier, and "short" sequences of measures - sequences of measures of order $1$, which are shorter than their minimum. We show that certain core models for short sequences of measures are contained in $C^{*}$; we compute $C^{*}$ in a model of the form $L\left[\mathcal{U}\right]$ where $\mathcal{U}$ is a short sequence of measures, and in models of the form $L\left[\mathcal{U}\right]\left[G\right]$ where $G$ is generic for adding Prikry sequences to some of the measurables of $\mathcal{U}$; and prove that if there is an inner model with a short sequence of measures of order type $\chi$, then there is such an inner model in $C^{*}$.

Abstract:We use forcing over admissible sets to show that, for every ordinal $\alpha$ in a club $C\subset\omega_1$, there are copies of $\alpha$ such that the isomorphism between them is not computable in the join of the complete $\Pi^1_1$ set relative to each copy separately. Assuming $\mathsf{V=L}$, this is close to optimal; on the other hand, assuming large cardinals the same (and more) holds for every projective functional.

Abstract:We develop a toolbox for forcing over arbitrary models of set theory without the axiom of choice. In particular, we introduce a variant of the countable chain condition and prove an iteration theorem that applies to many classical forcings such as Cohen forcing and random algebras. Our approach sidesteps the problem that forcing with the countable chain condition can collapse $\omega_1$ by a recent result of Karagila and Schweber. Using this, we show that adding many Cohen reals and random reals leads to different theories. This result is due to Woodin. Thus one can always change the theory of the universe by forcing, just like the continuum hypothesis and its negation can be obtained by forcing over arbitrary models with choice. We further study principles stipulating that the first-order theory of the universe remains the same in all generic extension by a fixed class of forcings. Extending a result of Woodin, we show that even for very restricted classes such as the class of all finite support products of Cohen forcing or the class of all random algebras, this principle implies that all infinite cardinals have countable cofinality.

Abstract:We prove level-by-level upper and lower bounds on the strength of determinacy for finite differences of sets in the hyperarithmetical hierarchy in terms of subsystems of finite-and transfinite-order arithmetic, extending the Montalbán-Shore theorem to each of the levels of the Borel hierarchy beyond the one they treated.
